Welcome to All #4thchat friends tonight! Please share your name, position & where you're from! Nancy from Mass. Digital Learning Coach - asking the questions tonight as @plnaugle can not make it. @JennRegruth acting as wingman as always.
This is a timely topic! It's important all the time, but lately I've been reading several pieces about empathy & positive culture in the classroom and I'm looking to do better because I know better. #4thchat
I think it's something that we work on sometimes without even knowing or realizing. Feel free to share any resources you think will help spark the conversation! #4thchat
Hi Desiree!!!! I'm really happy to see you - this topic can certainly apply to the Math Classroom - don't you think? Need to be building positive climate there too! #4thchat
A1: Everything! If there is a negative climate in the classroom with no respect, why would students want to learn from you or even behave. If students feel the positivity they are more apt to behave and follow you especially if they feel respected! #4thchat
Here's a new resource I've been following - https://t.co/xPP1lXEotJ If you know @AngelaStockman then you'll know this is a solid resource for creating compassionate classrooms. #4thchat
A1 The climate of a school or a classroom has everything to do with learning! If it doesn't directly impact Ss, then it has a huge influence on Ts and how they approach their day, their Ss and the typical challenges of schools. #4thchat
Certainly the admins set the tone - and hopefully, it's positive. If not, then we need to find ways to turn that culture around - not sure I have answers. #4thchat
Absolutely! Building a strong math culture where ss feel comfortable taking risks is vital! Starts with the Ts leading by example and being vulnerable enough to not be perfect #4thchat
I really think it is ALL about respect and trust. This applies not only to the students but for the adults in the building as well. But kids can tell when you're being for real...no fooling them. #4thchat@MrsHugginsClass

A2 Intense, loud, collab, persevering, confusing (@ times). The last one is where I come into play. I know when I'm having a bad day, I need 2 be aware of that & then leave it outside the classroom door. My Ss need me & I'm bigger than that. (Snippet of self-talk.) #4thchat
Not “just” an education student! You are the present and the future and you have unbelievable Power! Embrace it, be the change, and fight to create the culture you can thrive in for years to come. #4thchat
Love in the"Setting the Tone" post - "Tone is more than what we say!" That is just so true. Kids can really read between the lines when it comes to this - adults too! #4thchat

Kids won't take risks if they don't feel safe in the classroom, if they don't feel respected. Ts def need to show that they don't know it all and are willing to do what we ask of our students - TAKE RISKS! #4thchat
A3 I have complete control. And, yes, some days are harder than others. Then, I need 2 step away for a while & look 4 positive ways to engage with everyone. My Ss deserve no less. Once I do this in my classroom, it will naturally spill over to the rest of the school. #4thchat
Hey Jerry!!! Thank you so much for adding your School Culture Page! #4thchat . Important to start early in the year & build community. Can make or break the year!
A4 Twitter chat like #4thchat always get me in a better mood. More positive. Clears my head. Helps me start all over again the next day. And, I read when I'm feeling disjointed. It really helps put everything into perspective.
Love that you added "included". We do work hard to include all students - it's when the students in the class include their classmates that let's us know we've done a good job! #4thchat
Here's a resource by our very own @JennRegruth She was a featured guest speaker on Classroom2.0 Live She makes a lot of good points: Setting a Climate for Learning: Jennifer Regruth https://t.co/oDuprY7npP (Links at the bottom of the page.)

A3: It definitely starts with the teacher! Kids an tell from the moment they walk in in the morning what the day might be like! There's a lot of pressure to be positive but what's the alternative! We owe it to the kids & to ourselves. #bepositive#4thchat
A5 My classroom has flexible seating/spaces. It gets noisy, but when I stop 2 look around I see Ss engaged in work that's meaningful 2 them. We have bigger spaces & quieter spaces though Ss often ask 2 go 2 the Learning Commons or the halls where it is quieter. That's OK.#4thchat
A4: I try to bring a positive presence to the building. I greet everyone with a smile & a hello. Try to make connections with the people I work with. Have been giving out "kudos slips" & the smiles on those who receive them is the best! #4thchat
A5: I've tried calm and plain Ss & parents compliment it. New room now w/loud walls. Finding balance between Ss centric & holding attention of those who have challenges. I often hear "I am paying attention" but they're on wrong page. This is the 1/2 I want to revamp #4thchat
A4: I always feel a positive climate online. However, it might be because I surround myself with an amazing pln that had many of the same belief structures as I do ;) #4thchat
A4: Teachera need a positive climate too! Online is always positive - People have have a choice about what they share and who they collaborate with. #4thchat
A1: the climate of my classroom and school affects learning greatly. I realize that i have to make the climate be positive especially right now during testing. #4thchat
Same - I love the #4thchat because it rejuvenates me & gets me excited about trying new things. This transfers to the classroom. Ppl here are great about helping out (even if we are online)

A6: I believe my students feel safe, but I am still having them feel more comfortable with taking risks. Even though I model growth mindset and risk taking, many of them still struggle. #4thchat
A6 I'd like to say my Ss feel safe and take risks in their learning and strive to be leaders in the school. I want 2 do better in terms of how we do this so that it's clear to Ss & 2 me that this is truly OUR classroom. Still working on letting go of control! #4thchat
A6: I usually plaster fun motivational posters everywhere and I decorate for holidays, etc. I plan to incorporate more flexible seating options next year. #4thchat
I seriously have rockstar students that are quoting text evidence to prove answers independently now! I guess they might be ready for 5th grade! #cbcsd#cbproud@cblearns#proudteacher#4thchat
I think it takes time...may not happen this year..but if Ts in each grade level continue to model & build a culture where kids feel safe then it will come. Sometimes, I think if Ss are shy - it's hard to take the risk. #4thchat
A6: It takes time to build trust so the beginning of the year is a great time to instill this trust and positivefeedback among students and peers. #4thchat
A6: The emotional climate is very important to me. I want students supporting, helping, leading each other. They know they are in control of their learning, I am there to give them the tools. #4thchat
We would spend a LOT of time at the beginning of year building that class culture. I really feel if you create that 'family' then, it works for the class for the rest of the year. #4thchat

a6: as a 3rd year T im still trying to refine my climate year to year. I think im going to look into finding a good resource to really start off the year great and build that great culture throughout the whole year. #4thchat
Working hard to treat my colleagues with respect in the hopes that they will trust me when I help them. #4thchat It's new for all of us..I want the to see I appreciate their efforts.
Have you heard this quote: They don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care. And then they can care for each other and learn together. #4thchat
Yes! Kids like to know the rules and expectations. If we put plans in place that are positive & respectful - it should yield positive results. #4thchat
A8: Being positive and willing to listen are so important in a successful climate. In person, even a smile makes a difference! Online, choose posts you can ask questions about or positively comment on. #4thchat
A8 I think it's about staying positive or looking for the positive even when it feels like everything is negative all around you. That's why just literally stepping away from school sometimes really helps clear your head. #4thchat
a8: suggesting books they can read or other people that they can follow on twitter to help build their climate. letting them bounce ideas off you and giving constructive feedback #4thchat

i am finishing up kids deserve it.. that has really helped me change the way i think about my climate in my classroom. Leader in me is also a good one. #4thchat
It's true about the smile! Hard not to smile back. Love the commenting online - I try not to just like something but add a comment (not always, but working on it!). Shows why you value what's been shared/stated. #4thchat
A8: We try to have fun days during the year like Soup Day; Ugly Sweater Day; Guess that Baby Contest; Share Your Prom Picture day....anything to build rapport and positive talk. #4thchat
A8: being positive is a great start. When you walk into a negative conversation trying to change the climate. Reaching out to all teachers off your hallway. Even a good morning and a smile is all takes. #4thchat
A9 Ask Ss more ?s. Don't assume anything. Give specific compliments about Ss work & efforts. Showcase more Ss work to the class. For example, I have about 8 pieces of writing from a quick write we did today in our notebooks that need 2 be shared w/the rest of the class. #4thchat
Now that I reread the question, I'm not sure if my answer was addressing what you were asking. Nevertheless, that's where my thinking is at the moment! #4thchat
A10 Keeping the communication open and transparent. Communicating often, especially positive communication about their ind child. Inviting them into the classroom to observe learning. #4thchat
A10: This is the one i continue to struggle with. I dont know what it is about parents but some of them are so easy to talk to and i can bring them in to the class environment and then others im just perplexed. I think i need to focus on the #justbenice 4 parents nxt yr #4thchat
Virtual applause to @ncarroll24 for leading the charge tonight. Proud to be her wingman. Missing @plnaugle who will be back next week. Go forth and be amazing! #4thchat
Thank you everyone for participating tonight! It's the best night of the week thanks to all of you! Missing our @plnaugle Thank you @JennRegruth for building our #4thchat positive climate!
