Hello Gang! #NYEDChat Curt Slater Proud Principal of the @Jrwildcatsroar in MN! We had a great day of learning with our 1st ED Camp #FLASPD so many things that we can learn from each other. Take the time to create the environment for it to happen.
A1 We create student-centric schools by strategic planning, collaboration, and an air of #positivity. All stakeholders unite at the table as #differencemakers in children's lives. #NYEDChat
Teachers are key to creating a student-centered school. IN student-centered schools - students' needs, goals, and aspirations form the basis of the day-to-day work of school leaders, teachers, and staff members #NYEDChat
A1: one of the first steps in creating a student centered school is to ensure it’s also a teacher centered school in regards to teachers professional learning. Teacher will recreate what they have experienced. #nyedchat
A1: Student-centered schools create student agency through inquiry-based instructional models and by including student voice in big decisions #NYEDChat
A 1 First, schools need ongoing PD on student-centered learning. Visit classrooms and watch videos of student-centered learning. Principal needs to be on board & learning with teachers! Organize teacher partnerships so pairs help each other thru change process. #NYEDChat
A1 We create student-centric schools by strategic planning, collaboration, and an air of #positivity. All stakeholders unite at the table as #differencemakers in children's lives. #NYEDChat
A1 Ss drive instructional decisions & guide their own learning in REAL student-centered schools. A culture of authentic inquiry and #wonder persists, even when the powers that be are overbearing. #nyedchat
A1: I would also argue that the vision for the school, but first be student-centered. The Northstar to what the school is about and it should always be about ensuring ALL student succeed. Notice I didn't say test scores, though they are important! Student Success! #NYEDChat
A1: You create student-centeredschools by involv my students in all aspects. Listen to them, let them make decisions and guide direction. Students must be heard regardless of age. #NYEDChat
A1 It starts when they get on the bus or walk into the school! The students are the customer and we should treat them the way we would want our child to be treated. #NYEDChat#pbismn
A1: I think the first and most important thing we have to do is ask the kids what's important to them! Let them have a seat at the table in order to provide a more meaningful learning experience for them! #nyedchat

A1: I think the first and most important thing we have to do is ask the kids what's important to them! Let them have a seat at the table in order to provide a more meaningful learning experience for them! #nyedchat
A1) give them (students) a voice at the table. Student climate surveys and student leadership committees. Give students the power to take ownership of their school.
#NYEDChat
A1: Don't be afraid to push the boundaries, BEND Constructs, until the school is student-centered! Commitment and Determination to become Student-Centered says a lot about School leaders, teachers, and staff members! #NYEdChat
A1: My first response is choice, then allowing students to take ownership in building the community with rules and instead of buying posters have the kids make them. It means more! #NYEDChat
A1 Students are not willing to learn from people that they don’t trust. You have to build a school culture so that students are willing to take risks. #NYEDChat
A1: Sropping in for just a little. A student centered school has to give both small (lesson activities) and large(Ss designed advisory lessons and daily news programs) opportunities for Ss choices. #NYEDChat
I think in our effort to give students great voice in what we do, we MUST ensure follow-through in our actions. Far too often we ask their opinion and then fail to follow through on what they've expressed to us. #nyedchat
A1: Stopping in for just a little. A student centered school gives both small opportunities like activity choices, and large(S designed advisory lessons and daily news programs) opportunities for S choices. #NYEDChat
In addition to trust, I believe students want to be heard and listened to. I can’t even count the number of times situations sre resolved simply through listening. We have 2 ears and one mouth for a reason. #NYEDChat
I think in our effort to give students great voice in what we do, we MUST ensure follow-through in our actions. Far too often we ask their opinion and then fail to follow through on what they've expressed to us. #nyedchat
So true! Same as good parenting, right? Why would any child trust you or want to get on board with your plans if you don't do what you say you'll do? #NYEDChat
As adults we not only have to model but follow through in our actions. Thanks for your response, Ben. Thanks for dropping in John. Long time since we last chatted. #NYEDChat
A2 In my current role as consultant, I facilitate PD on rethinking literacy to bring student-centered learning to all classrooms. Change has to happen in small steps with a core group of people dedicated to impacting teaching & learning. #NYEDChat
A2: as a principal I’ve developed a better understanding about change and how it can impact individuals. Sprinkle seeds, water the seeds and get out of the way. Just don’t forget to tend to the garden. #NYEDChat
A2: Not in one school, but serve many in Ts efforts to positively transform culture & increase Ss engagement through #GeniusHour and #GrowthMindset. I strive to follow up w/ those in my workshops & create partnerships instead of 1 & done PDs #nyedchat
A2. I hope summer schedule for #BookCampPD will change the way many educators think about developing their own professional learning. No sense in waiting for someone else to plan it for them! #NYEDchathttps://t.co/AAAObdC9nT
A2: In my role as a special education teacher and an advocate for progressive educational practices, I feel like I have to be the voice for my students in this movement! This idea of practical outcomes to learning is vital for my students in particular! #nyedchat
A2 Have conversationsvwith teachers. Share articles. Visit classes in their district and other districts. Encourage risking trying change and gathering students’ feedback to figure out next moves. #NYEDChat
A2 Finding the Super Powers that my staff have and let them LEAD! Today I watched @ms_held_teacher lead and ED Camp #FLASPD for 70 teachers and it was amazing! #NYEDChat#leadlap
A1: At the community college level, we need SO badly to keep the needs & career plans of our Ss in mind. That’s common in K-12, but not in all higher ed. I advocate for my Ss as often as I can! #NYEDChat
A2) year 1 admin. I took a lot of the landscape in. #1 goal build relationships. What was good, what was not so great, what was working, & what could we do to move the needle? its a process that takes time. Build a strong foundation to support future endeavors.
#NYEDChat
A2: listen to both Ts and Ss to hear their ideas. Today I asked PLCs to design their dream classrooms to see how I can support them and move their classrooms in a direction that would help them become more Ss centered. #NYEDChat
So many Ss feel that NO ONE listens to them. We can be that shoulder to lean on, that ear to listen when they have something they feel is important to say. The same is true for admin & Ts. #NYEDChat
Student voice is transformative if we will only take the time to listen! We need to empower students to be change leaders in our school and they are fully capable of creating sustainable change! #NYEdChat#bendingED
Even the strongest need feedback and support. To often they are the ones that are left to figure it out on their own. I’m guilty of this. Not intentional, but need to be more mindful. #NYEDChat
A2: perfect question! My school is currently moving from a 2-6 building to a K -2 building and I’d love the opportunity to bring the change of a community garden through STEAM. Adding a community of different cultures through language. #NYEDChat
We try to prescribe a remedy without ever asking students their symptoms. When we show students we value their input and feedback, magic happens every time! #BendingED#NyEDChat
So many Ss feel that NO ONE listens to them. We can be that shoulder to lean on, that ear to listen when they have something they feel is important to say. The same is true for admin & Ts. #NYEDChat
A2: Be an active, enthusiastic participant in meetings, committees, in the school, district, and committee. Volunteer whenever possible. Invite others into your learning community. And, share, share, share all that you learn with colleagues... #NYEDChat
A2: Continue to grow and learn as an Instructional Coach. Bring quality PD to teachers. Help construct a bridge between students, teachers, parents, community! #NYEDChat
If everyone took the time to listen to those students who are asking for us to do so we would build a foundation of trust and solid relationships. #NYEDChat
And we can't expect them to be able to ascend to these roles as change leaders if we never give them the opportunity to put those things into practice!
A2: It is crucial for school leaders to value and support the work that teachers are currently doing. This support creates the type of culture that gives teachers the energy and the confidence that they need to embrace change in the building. #NYEDChat
A2: Be an active, enthusiastic participant in meetings, committees, in the school, district, and committee. Volunteer whenever possible. Invite others into your learning community. And, share, share, share all that you learn with colleagues... #NYEDChat

A2: Be an active, enthusiastic participant in meetings, committees, in the school, district, and committee. Volunteer whenever possible. Invite others into your learning community. And, share, share, share all that you learn with colleagues... #NYEDChat
A3: Invite parents, families, community members, staff, faculty, business owners, and STUDENTS into the conversation. Don't forget the support staff...they make the building run! The more voices & perspectives, the more balanced the vision & far reaching the outcomes #nyedchat
A3 Schools can engage all stakeholders to identify changes needed for transformation via a strategic planning initiative. Conversations must be collegial & collaborative leading to ideas to move forward. #NYEDChat
A3: Step one - engage them - seek diverse perspectives and value all opinions and perceptions! Take the time to invite stakeholders into the school and listen to what they are describing and asking for! When you can say yes, Say Yes! #BendingED#NYEdChat
A3. Begins with greater communication between all community members that works toward trust so listening occurs. Over time, longer range goals can begin to form about common changes. #NYEDchat
A3 Indeed, Brian. Engagement is so important. How can we have listening ears if we cannot get them into the school. Promote the successes and watch the stakeholders want to join in. #NYEDChat
A3: Be an informed citizen! Schools can no longer be ivory towers who turn a blind eye to what's relevant in the world around us. Our instruction needs to match the demands and waves of our society! #nyedchat
A3 I would like to use #FLIPGRID around the question and send it out to our students, parents and community members! We can’t grow if we don’t get timely and precise feedback in the journey. Don’t forget to celebrate the journey! #NYEDChat
A3: Be an informed citizen! Schools can no longer be ivory towers who turn a blind eye to what's relevant in the world around us. Our instruction needs to match the demands and waves of our society! #nyedchat
A3 communicate, communicate thru podcasts, videos by students and teachers on school website. Invite parents into the conversation for feedback and to educate them. #NYEDChat
A3 I sat on a community forum in one of my districts and that union of business leaders from outside the school w those within was a powerful combination. #NYEDChat
A3: The No.1 Obstacle to Stakeholder Engagement is US! We are too sporadic in our pursuits and when we do get them into our schools we fail to show that we value their input, feedback, etc. We need to engage regularly and follow-up with responses to their feedback! #NYEDChat
A3 Indeed, Brian. Engagement is so important. How can we have listening ears if we cannot get them into the school. Promote the successes and watch the stakeholders want to join in. #NYEDChat
We listed all community weekly and monthly events. Placed them on huge calendars, laid them out across tables in cafeteria. All staff signed up to attend them, rotating. Amazing community involvement where they are! #NYEDchat
A3: Acknowledge, we cannot go it alone. We can move a mountain, one rock at a time, but we can accomplish the task more efficiently as a dedicated group. Be truthful about our own strengths and actively tap into the strengths of others. #NYEDChat
A3: ask. If u don't ask you d ok not know. Make it a social event to get the best turnout such as a food truck night or pass out popsicles. It might cost a little upfront but being able to bring new voices to the table will do wonders for willingness to help the school
#NYEDChat
Leading PD on myths of education (learning styles, the learning pyramid, etc.) and learning strategies (retrieval practice, spaced practice, etc.) that work in the classroom. #nyedchat
A3 we went to our elem thru high school student Cabinet and asked them to help us craft recruiting strategies and to identify what they want in their teachers - and we used their words #NYEDChat JOIN #ACPS - Part 2 - By Our Students https://t.co/ieLkim6zuO
A3: ask. If u don't ask you dont know. Make it a social event to get the best turnout such as a food truck night or pass out popsicles. It might cost a little upfront but being able to bring new voices to the table will do wonders for willingness to help the school
#NYEDChat
A4 This is what I do, friends! If we teach #happinesshabits and #growthmindset, improving the lives of the people we serve, the changes will not only help schools, but PEOPLE. The changes will last. #nyedchat
A4 It is essential for schools to communicate transformation efforts to all. Showcasing the positives of the initiative via social media are ways to inform all. Newsletters work well too. #NYEDChat
A2 In my current role as a Professional Learning Specialist, I am intentional about cultivating #JoyfulPD that allows educators to design #joyful learning experiences w/empathy & equity in mind. #NYEDChat
A4: School leaders, teachers, and staff members need to be clear in their communication and understanding. School's can't succeed, they can't succeed professionally, if students don't succeed! Celebrate this connection, don't run away from it! #NYEdChat#BendingED
A4: PD, PD, PD. You can't transform the performance of a school without transforming the PD of its leaders/teachers. It's not programs.....it's people. #nyedchat
A4: The focus must be on improving quality of life and increasing positive outcomes that change lives. Less focus on initiatives and more on #growthmindset#NYEDChat
A3: we have to be willing to ask the important questions and be brave enough to be open to the feedback. I say that, but asking the question isn’t enough. How can you ensure you get a response? Meet them where they are at! #NYEDChat
You are so right, Carol. Teachers cannot do something only because it has been done for X years. We want to transform schools so that all our Ss can succeed #nyedchat
A4 It is essential for schools to communicate transformation efforts to all. Showcasing the positives of the initiative via social media are ways to inform all. Newsletters work well too. #NYEDChat
A4: I think communication with stakeholders should be our second greatest priority (right behind the students themselves). Mass media hasn't done a great job of telling our stories; so we need to be more intentional about narrating the story ourselves! #nyedchat
So true! It is what I strive to do every time I give a keynote or facilitate a workshop. We've all sat through meaningless, irrelevant PD. Enough is enough! #NYEDChat
A4: PD, PD, PD. You can't transform the performance of a school without transforming the PD of its leaders/teachers. It's not programs.....it's people. #nyedchat
A4. When I was principal of a SIG school we had a large amount of money to transform and over 30% of those funds went to professional learning. A strong foundation is required. #NYEDchat
A4: it’s all about telling your campus story and building a brand/identity for your campus that’s shared with all. Check out #SiglerNation and our story. https://t.co/27vdI6ZhjD#NYEDChat
And it is so easy to be torn away from that focus on Ss with all the other demands on schools to show progress and demonstrate "success" in quantifiable ways. Ss are the reason we do what we do! #NYEDChat
A4: it’s all about telling your campus story and building a brand/identity for your campus that’s shared with all. Check out #SiglerNation and our story. https://t.co/27vdI6ZhjD#NYEDChat
@matthew_arend Branding what schools do best is the key to building relationships outside the building. communities want their schools to succeed so let's make that happen. Be a #DifferenMaker#NYEDChat
Loved @aaron_hogan 's idea for sharing out about positive things happening at a school so I created this graphic to share the idea far and wide!! #NYEDchat
A4: communication is key and creating opportunities that support Ts & Ss to grow as learners For example, social media, digital newsletters, podcasts, blogs, Vlogs #nyedchat
Talking about Branding @trishrubin is the best and a great colleague and friend. #nyedchat Schools too often fail to have a brand that speaks of student-centeredness!
@matthew_arend Branding what schools do best is the key to building relationships outside the building. communities want their schools to succeed so let's make that happen. Be a #DifferenMaker#NYEDChat
I like following what your children and teachers are doing Matt, especially when they are in the wondering phase. A big YES to linking with @Wonderopolis#NYEDChat
In reply to
@matthew_arend, @Jesse_Bacon, @SiglerStars, @Wonderopolis
A4 Such a good question -stories are at the heart of building collective efforts and commitments of the full community / isn’t it our stories that inspire us to feel we are part of something greater than ourselves alone? #NYEdChat
A4: Our amazing school system had a few avenues: a white paper, forums for people to come and be a part of the vision, community "Open Houses" and a web page #NYEDChat There is joy in transparency, voice and agency
A4 @LRobbTeacher brought up podcasts and videos and you are reiterating that Michele and adding vlogs. Does your school encourage these methods of communication? #NYEDChat
A 4 Schools can make websites the focus of information for all stakeholders. All voices should be heard: students, teachers, admins. Celebrate changes during daily news announcements. At team and faculty meetings have teachers share successes. Spread the good news! #NYEDChat
A5 Students are key stakeholders in the transformation process. Their voice counts. In strategic planning, #stuvoice can bring awareness to what needs to be accomplished toward self-efficacy. #NYEDChat
Loved @aaron_hogan 's idea for sharing out about positive things happening at a school so I created this graphic to share the idea far and wide!! #NYEDchat
A5 Student voice should be validated at every decision that creates change for a school, K - Adult. We only have jobs because of the students...we should never forget that when we are attempting to transform education! #nyedchat
A4: # WEareLakota has done this with our new super Matt Miller😎He has brought community through his presence in the community at the events and on here! Trying something new making everyone feel included! #NYEDChat
A5: A partnership approach is key. Student voice should be genuinely sought out by all stakeholders before transformation can occur. If Ss don’t buy in, what the heck are we even doing? #NYEDChat
Communication is so important. Everyone in our school can watch our Morning Announcements filmed and produced by our 8th graders. This year we are pushing it out to families, thanks to @Yimbo5, to keep them informed.
https://t.co/CVDn6bVHXy#nyedchat
A5: I think the better question is where do they NOT fit? There should never a thought cross our minds that doesn't circle back to the impact on student achievement! #nyedchat
A5: great ? And I’m not sure I have an answer but this year our district had students teach teachers about Twitter and run Edchats! Flipping the classroom #NYEDChat
Carol - when we look at the ed world through a lenses of how might we make this a better experience for learners, it leads us to a lifting their voice, agency, influence as key to that #NYEDChat
A5: great ? And I’m not sure I have an answer but this year our district had students teach teachers about Twitter and run Edchats! Flipping the classroom #NYEDChat
A5 students are the center of the transformation. It’s all about their diverse needs. We must always keep in mind that we teach the children and not programs or paced curriculum. #NYEdChat
I can build partnerships w/ Ts and Ss that will last into years to come through my workshops. Together, we can transform teaching & learning. I cannot do what I do without them! #nyedchat#Reflaction
Reflaction: During the next few months, I can continue to blog about ways to effectively impact teaching & learning; join Twitter chats; bring relevant topics to #NYEDChat for all to discuss.
A5: student buy-in is vital. They are a reason we have a job in the first place. As previously stated, given a place at the table to take ownership in their school.
#NYEDChat
During the last month we were busy as busy bees planning for the next year to be sure all voices were included and everyone jumped into the excitement. Identified strengths and became involved based on those. #NYEDchat
Reflection: we had our introduction meeting today to High Reliability Schools w/ @MarzanoResearch. Y’all better know #SiglerNation is ready for the journey to become a #HRS!! #NYEDChat
In the chaos of summative assessment season, I can ask and listen to what the students goals are for their future without demanding that it be met through the constraints of a test. Just listen and find ways to encourage! #nyedchat
Reflaction: Continue to follow @FCSSuper@Jesse_Bacon@SFPrincipal As daily transformative strategies are released each day as we continue to Bend Constructs of an American Icon. Join the #BendingED movement. Follow us on Twitter #nyedchat
