Hi! Usually this chat is too late for me but it's break. Good to be back. I am Gwena from Indiana, and I teach High School Spanish. Spending most of my break relaxing, reading, learning, watching movies, and getting together with friends. #ditchbook
#ditchbook chat I really took to @k_shelton talk about student voice. It is so easy for me to forget that I am not the show. Having sts negotiate grade and daily checkins spot on.
Q1: Reflections, ideas and experiences ...
"If our students can create something digitally, it sticks better than if we are just asking them to fill in the blanks." -- @tonyvincent#DitchBook#DitchSummit
Hey, #ditchbook friends! I'm a literacy coach and international literacy consultant based in Tokyo. My winter break plans include lots of self-care: family time, PJ days, reading, and @hallmarkchannel movies with my husband! https://t.co/gmNg1qtP3O
Hey #ditchbook! I've been sorely missing this PLN! Louie from Philly touching base before our last day before the last day!! (Twas the Night Before...) 5th grade teacher and excited to learn from you all!
A1: I enjoyed this quote from @tonyvincent. It got me thinking a little bit more and realized that the more I can allow my students to create, the more ownership they take of the assignment, the more mastery of a standard, etc. etc. Such a great thought! #DitchBook
A1: I loved seeing what my students created in Google Drawings in a lesson on the Industrial Revolution, how they took an old way of doing things to the new way, such as a horse and buggy to a Tesla! #ditchbook
Q1: Reflections, ideas and experiences ...
"If our students can create something digitally, it sticks better than if we are just asking them to fill in the blanks." -- @tonyvincent#DitchBook#DitchSummit
A1) I think the key word is create, even if it's not digitally. When we listen to kids, over and over they let us know that they don't like to sit still for an entire day and they can't stand worksheets. #ditchbook
A1) My initial reaction to this is that if we ask our students to create anything in any way, they will learn more than if asking them to fill in the blanks. #ditchbook
Q1: Reflections, ideas and experiences ...
"If our students can create something digitally, it sticks better than if we are just asking them to fill in the blanks." -- @tonyvincent#DitchBook#DitchSummit
A1. I was inspired by @EdTechNerd coding episode. When we finished our Jackie Robinson read aloud had kids list problems Jackie had, create solutions to them. Create an obstacle course for Jackie (Dash) to go through. Tomorrow they are coding Dash through course. #DitchBook
Q1: Reflections, ideas and experiences ...
"If our students can create something digitally, it sticks better than if we are just asking them to fill in the blanks." -- @tonyvincent#DitchBook#DitchSummit
A1: The critical and creative thinking that resides in the creation process is like no other. When students create digitally, they are making decisions, failing, reflecting, starting again, etc. That process is real! Filling in the blanks is for school only. #ditchbook
A1: I've found that when we make something that demonstrates our learning -- especially that we're proud of -- it kicks learning up to a whole new level! #DitchBook
My kids go to school in one district, today was their last day, I have one more day like you, but my after school program does not meet tomorrow, so I am done at 2:30 here in not as sunny Northern Nevada #ditchbook
That's a great question. I have also heard that writing things down improves our memory. I don't think that this quote negates that, more that simply filling in the blanks isn't helping learning stick. #DitchBook
A1. I love digital creation, because it is relatively longer lasting than a paper-based product! I love the potential of digital portfolios with digital creation. Of course, you can also share paper-based creation digitally too! Many reasons that it sticks! #ditchbook
It is a thing, but what are they reading for? Teaching ELA my kids learned how to create 3D models and VR by going through the technical manuals. We even wrote an informative essay on the process. Read and writing are important, but how we teach it is the magic. #ditchbook
A1: I really liked this thought from @tonyvincent. In my classroom, I try to create opportunities for my students to create in order to share their voice and make their thinking visible. I want to see what they can do with the language and take ownership of it. #DitchBook
A1 creation over regurgitation every time! In order to be effective, we need to select essential learning outcomes so teachers don’t feel the pressure to rush through to cover everything. #ditchbook
Hi Karen from the Gold Coast 🇦🇺 I’m a Grade 4 teacher, coach & mentor & also host the ##TLAPdownunder chat. My plans for summer break inc relaxing, reading, swimming, catching up with friends & spending time with family. #DitchBook
Oh, this break, I’ll be traveling to Florida with my family for Christmas and New Years! Going to Magic Kingdom for New Year’s Eve!! Soooo excited!! #DitchBook
A1: Agreed - but I'd take it a step further and say that the creation has to be visually engaging, personally meaningful, and have an authentic purpose as well. If all we're asking them to do is type up an essay, then it's not much different from filling in the blanks.#ditchbook
A1 the act of creating (digitally or physically) gets students thinking and trying new things and testing ideas so much more than writing down right there answers #ditchbook
A1: Sticky Learning! What are we doing in our learning spaces to make sure that our kids leave with more than they came in with? I can promise you, that worksheets and homework isn’t doing it. (Respectfully) #Ditchbook#DitchContest
Q1: Reflections, ideas and experiences ...
"If our students can create something digitally, it sticks better than if we are just asking them to fill in the blanks." -- @tonyvincent#DitchBook#DitchSummit
A1: when students create they are able to put themselves into the product. Had a student who was thrilled when she learned how to add her bitmoji to @AdobeSpark#DitchBook
Q1: Reflections, ideas and experiences ...
"If our students can create something digitally, it sticks better than if we are just asking them to fill in the blanks." -- @tonyvincent#DitchBook#DitchSummit
A1. The key word is not digital... Its create... Filling in the blanks is rote. Creating is deep and complex and requires a handle on data, facts, and skills. #ditchbook
Q1: From experience, I know that having students create something it sticks when they come back yr after yr of graduating and talked about the activity, tasks, or assignment. #DitchBook
Q2: Reflections, ideas, experiences based on this quote:
"If we aren't aware of the need for diversity and the opportunities for access to diverse narratives, then we can't be responsive and therefore we can't be relevant." -- @k_shelton#DitchBook
Especially when kids can take it home or show it off at home. This builds a little bridge to the homelife and allows kids to share their talents. #ditchbook
A1: It doesn't matter so much if it's digital or not; it's about the opportunity to CREATE—to get curious, inquire, reflect, take thoughtful risks, innovate. https://t.co/ulyJbBl8gN#ditchbook
Greetings, #DitchBook#DitchSummit crew! My plans for winter break make me tired! Besides the fun holiday fun with fam, I have a lot of work to do (and cleaning...ugh). Websites to update, blogs to write, book chapter to write, grades to update, and gamification & PD to plan.
A2: As a social studies teacher by trade, this one really resonates. Our history is not just one perspective, there are multiple perspectives that all deserve recognition for their contributions #ditchbook
Q2: Reflections, ideas, experiences based on this quote:
"If we aren't aware of the need for diversity and the opportunities for access to diverse narratives, then we can't be responsive and therefore we can't be relevant." -- @k_shelton#DitchBook
A1 It is important for Ss to create and communicate. Plan to ensure technology is supporting learning and not simply a "mindless worksheet."
There were many ideas and resources shared! I also enjoyed reading other participants reflections and ideas. #ditchbook
A1 I think that giving students an option to create, especially if they have the option to choose the tool that they create with then we are helping to create learning experiences not just assignments they turn in. LOVE show what you know BINGO
https://t.co/AV7JD4p4km#Ditchbook
A1: I think encouraging Ss to create something to show what they know in a variety of ways consolidates understanding. We do this by offering student choice of how they demonstrate their understanding. As a 1:1 iPad school, there are a variety of ways they can do this. #DitchBook
A1: My intro tweet didn't...so hey! Learning that allows Ss to interact with your content, in whatever form that takes during that moment, will definitely make the learning sticky! It's amazing what Ss can learn when they simply act out the high points. #DitchBook#DitchSummit
A2 #Ditchbook This may be at the root of our struggles in education, when we work with so many, it can hard to see each individual's story and needs...
Q2: Reflections, ideas, experiences based on this quote:
"If we aren't aware of the need for diversity and the opportunities for access to diverse narratives, then we can't be responsive and therefore we can't be relevant." -- @k_shelton#DitchBook
A2: Allowing students to be introduced to a variety of diversity whether in texts or assignments can ensure students become more engaged in the learning. It's all about building a positive, welcoming, relevant culture in the classroom with the curriculum! #ditchbook
A2: Another awesome #DitchSummit moment from @k_shelton . As Ts we need to be aware of our Ss and each of their needs. We need to recognize and celebrate all voices in the classroom and find ways to make sure all voices are heard. Don’t teach like you were taught. #DitchBook
A1: Omg!! Sketchnotes have made a HUGE difference for me! Right now we use paper & pencil, but it started from a digital place. Digital is next... if I could find one a site/app for their chrome books. #DitchBook
Q1: Reflections, ideas and experiences ...
"If our students can create something digitally, it sticks better than if we are just asking them to fill in the blanks." -- @tonyvincent#DitchBook#DitchSummit
A2: We need to make sure that every school in this country has a certified librarian who ensures that the books tell all stories. Not just diverse in terms of race, class, & gender. Diverse in books that detail the tough experiences that our students live each day. #DitchBook
A2 as a history teacher with a set of standards I find I am constantly trying to go beyond them to include different voices and perspective. Probably need to do more but getting out of a dominant narratove lets Ss question their own and hopefully grow...
#ditchbook
A2. I feel very strongly about need for a diverse library in classrooms. Having books like @lxgino George is a prime example of what should be in an elementary library. Books of all types of people. And have courageous conversations with kids. U will not regret it. #DitchBook
Q2: Reflections, ideas, experiences based on this quote:
"If we aren't aware of the need for diversity and the opportunities for access to diverse narratives, then we can't be responsive and therefore we can't be relevant." -- @k_shelton#DitchBook
A2. I've become so much more cognizant of this reality since moving to and teaching in Philadelphia. My students need more texts in which they can relate to the stories. I am always open to wisdom and resources in this department! #ditchbook
A2: This hits the nail on the head: so many Ts don't realize that there is a need for CRT. Many think they're meeting diverse needs through differentiation, while never addressing the underlying reasons why we continuously fail certain pops of students. #ditchbook
A2) When we are truly inclusive, we allow all voices to be heard. Children are our bridges into the community and neighborhoods. If we are not responsive to their needs then we are not relevant to their community. This only happens through purposeful outreach #ditchbook
Yessir! I can walk to the convention center from my house! It's a mile walk, but still! I'm a Philly local now! Can't wait to meet you again. Hopefully we can touch base for more than a moment next year! :) #ditchbook
Q3: Reflections, ideas, experiences based on this quote:
"The words that you say are not as important as the sincerity with which you say them." -- @kimbearden#DitchBook#DitchSummit
Q2: Reflections, ideas, experiences based on this quote:
"If we aren't aware of the need for diversity and the opportunities for access to diverse narratives, then we can't be responsive and therefore we can't be relevant." -- @k_shelton#DitchBook
A2) As educators we need to understand our own lenses and biases to learn about other views so we can understand how differences (ex: cultural) can affect how Ss learns or views education. Impt to understand own b4 responding to others'. #ditchbook
Q2: Reflections, ideas, experiences based on this quote:
"If we aren't aware of the need for diversity and the opportunities for access to diverse narratives, then we can't be responsive and therefore we can't be relevant." -- @k_shelton#DitchBook
A2: This one resonates with me as an English teacher, not only in the content of what we read, but who is creating the texts we read. So many voices that are left out in the traditional literary canon. #DitchBook
Thanks again as always for the great chat that I have to duck out of early! Have a great holiday, however you celebrate and whatever you do or do not believe, and, shameless plug, check out my latest blog post, Sharing is Caring! available at https://t.co/TUD6dPmFRi#ditchbook
A3: Obviously, in class, the words we ACTUALLY do say are important. WE must be factual and relevant.
I think the heart of this quote is that we express a LOT by how we communicate. And that's powerful. #DitchBook#DitchSummit
A2: We have to see each Ss as a unique and incredible human being. Recognizing their diversity is important, but then we must do more. We have a responsibility to cultivate environments where they can truly grow and THRIVE—where they have voice, choice, & ownership. #ditchbook
A2 I love this quote. How can we be relevant if we don't take the opportunity to hear from every student? And hearing from each student means that we REALLY listen to them & get to know their story. I loved the Google from idea Ken shared for just checking in each day #ditchbook
A3. though i believe in this I actually think it is more important to model reactions for Ss. They need to see how to handle tough situations and get solutions. Words can take you so far. #DitchBook
Q3: Reflections, ideas, experiences based on this quote:
"The words that you say are not as important as the sincerity with which you say them." -- @kimbearden#DitchBook#DitchSummit
A2: let’s not just look at our academic differences when designing institution got to look at learners stories & value them. Especially this time of year when considering socioeconomic & cultural differences #DitchBook
A2: Being relevant means being aware of what it means to be relevant, and that includes diversity. Otherwise, our responsiveness is incomplete. #ditchbook
A2: It is so important to give our students multiple windows into the world. To give them a view of a view they know. Our classroom ceiling should not be their ceiling for learning. #Ditchbook#DitchSummit
Q2: Reflections, ideas, experiences based on this quote:
"If we aren't aware of the need for diversity and the opportunities for access to diverse narratives, then we can't be responsive and therefore we can't be relevant." -- @k_shelton#DitchBook
A3: This quote speaks to the difference between being visible and being present. We can talk to staff and we can have a conversation with staff. Big difference. #DitchBook
I've read about a practice called Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR). Great branch of research that has kids use themselves and community as a resource. #ditchbook
In reply to
@mr_middle_2, @jmattmiller, @k_shelton
This is all about students having "epiphanies of other" + using their literacies to empathetically connect with others who aren't like them. Much of my pedagogy centers on helping students create ways to use + express radical empathy every single day. #DitchBook
A3: I think this quote is a direct correlation to what someone else has said....someone who said we need to be REAL in our teaching and teach with heart! @TaraMartinEDU -This is what we should all strive to do for our students! #DitchBook
A3: I spent many years thinking delivering information/content was what I got paid to do... relationship-smationship! The last few years I've flipped that. How I say things = or > than what I'm saying... much better teacher /person #DitchBook
A3: this was my day today. A S was having a meltdown and I told her that if she wasn’t ready to listen right then, that would be okay. I’d be there for her when she was. #DitchBook
Q3: Reflections, ideas, experiences based on this quote:
"The words that you say are not as important as the sincerity with which you say them." -- @kimbearden#DitchBook#DitchSummit
A3: Especially in stressful times of the year, Ts need to be mindful about how they talk to Ss. We can make a Ss day better or worse. Be intentional with our words! #DitchBook
Wooo - so much to unpack here. We must continuously ask why marginalized communities are consistently overrepresented in Special Ed/lower classes and underrepresented in advanced classes. #ditchbook
In reply to
@EddiesClass, @jmattmiller, @k_shelton
A3 Very powerful - What strikes me here is that we focus so much on the what (what we say), but need to focus more on the how (how we say it) and even more importantly the why... (why we say it in the first place...) #Ditchbook
Q3: Reflections, ideas, experiences based on this quote:
"The words that you say are not as important as the sincerity with which you say them." -- @kimbearden#DitchBook#DitchSummit
A3: Be real and genuine with your students, colleagues, or parents. If you treat them with respect and show you are there for them, they are going to be one your side. Showing you care means the world to others 💗 #DitchBook@kimbearden
A2: We need to know our student’s stories in order to respond and make learning relevant to them. We need to listen to learn & amplify their voices so they feel heard. But we also need to broaden their view of the world and make them aware of the stories of others. #DitchBook
Ask and listen. And listen to understand not to respond. Above all, never assume. If we model this behavior and walk the talk, our students’ perspectivea will shift and we will ready them for an ever changing global marketplace #Ditchbook
A2: Our Ss come with open minds and they need to continue to learn, celebrate & appreciate all voices and realize the world is a huge wonderful diverse place. #ditchbook
A3: In the words of my good buddy, @mrdearybury! #Love1stTeach2nd It all starts with the heart. Nothing else matters until they know they can trust you and that you can trust them. #DitchBook#DitchSummit
Q3: Reflections, ideas, experiences based on this quote:
"The words that you say are not as important as the sincerity with which you say them." -- @kimbearden#DitchBook#DitchSummit
A3 Tone, facial expressions, body language and most of all actions before and after your words all play a role in how your message is perceived. We need to understand that this is just as important to remember as we talk to our students. #ditchbook
A2: Even though my class is not diverse, that doesn't relieve me of the responsibility to offer diverse literature and readings. That was a big reflection for me. Those convos need to still happen. I loved that #DitchSummit session with @k_shelton . #DitchBook
1. Honor the literacies that students already have.
2. Add to those literacies with texts relevant to student interests outside the classroom.
3. Help students develop tools to navigate these texts.
4. Make space for them to talk to you + their peers about reading. #DitchBook
A3 Mixed Feelings. Word Matter and can indicate respect. That said we are all learning and words change meaning so the intent is also important.
#Ditchbook
A2 diversity is so important in all areas. we need it in school libraries, classroom collections, required texts, posters, students should see themselves in the stories they read & we need to be brave in our discussions #DitchBook#hafuboti
A3 I’ve been in so many situations where I don’t have the right words, but showing Ss that I am there when they are ready to talk has been the difference for so many. #ditchbook
A3: Truth! Unless the words are negative words.... It's interesting that negative words, even if told as a "joke" and not intended to be harmful, seem to have a much greater impact than insincere positive words. #ditchbook
A3: We can talk a lot of talk, but it's meaningless if we aren't walking the walk. Everything we do must come back to what's best for kids. They are our North Star. 💖🌟💖 https://t.co/u4aSQQEJz5#ditchbook
I'm towards the end of my dissertation. My take is that ALL children have the leadership abilities to make a difference. Part of my work is having middle schoolers in my intervention lead PD, teach at the university, and tutor each other. #ditchbook

"Real learning takes place when students are mentally and emotionally engaged." -- @Savvy_Educator#DitchBook#DitchSummit
A3) All I have to say is that this is so true. Be careful what you say and how you say it. Take a moment to think if needed. The interaction will be better off b/c of it. #DitchBook
Q3: Reflections, ideas, experiences based on this quote:
"The words that you say are not as important as the sincerity with which you say them." -- @kimbearden#DitchBook#DitchSummit
Hello, @jmattmiller! I’m Marcella, 2nd grade teacher from Lee’s Summit, Missouri. I’m looking forward to relaxing and not having every part of my day planned minute to minute. I’m a lady of leisure for the next 2 weeks! #DitchBook
We really need to make sure we have books that speak to all kids. And ensure our teachers can lead courageous conversations. If a topic is too dangerous to read about, what does it tell a student going though it? #DitchBook@Kpteach5
A3: Teens are best at this. What they say isn't as important as how they say them. We can tell people we're "sorry" for example, but we also know when it isn't heartfelt or meant. Sincerity is king. #DitchBook#DitchSummit
A social experiment with a series of statements which are responded to with take one step forward iff...take two steps back if... etc. It shows the systemic racism that exists. #DitchBook
Sometimes it's even more important in that case. It may be the only opportunity to get a different view point. I missed that one, so I'm excited to go back and watch it. #ditchsummit#ditchbook
This is a frequent part of my @Skyline_WC tutors' social-emotional learning training: a student may not remember even bit of feedback you provided, but they'll always remember how they left. That relationship--that emotional connection--makes everything else possible. #DitchBook
In reply to
@jmattmiller, @kimbearden, @Skyline_WC
A3: This comes down to relationships - if we have deep, meaningful relationships with our students then we are always aware of what we are saying & how we say it. We need to be honest & sincere, & acknowledge & apologise when we’re not. #DitchBook
A4: Soooo true. I had a student fall asleep during my math test on Wednesday. Same kid who falls asleep randomly during math. His sleep is eayyy more important than my math lesson. When he’s ready, I’ll be there for him with the material. #DitchBook
Q4: Reflections, ideas, experiences based on this quote:
"Real learning takes place when students are mentally and emotionally engaged." -- @Savvy_Educator#DitchBook#DitchSummit
A3: Authenticity and sincerity are crucial for success in our profession: Students can tell when we're not all in, and if we're not all in, why would they be? #ditchbook
Q3: Reflections, ideas, experiences based on this quote:
"The words that you say are not as important as the sincerity with which you say them." -- @kimbearden#DitchBook#DitchSummit
A4. YES! Learning theory 101 says Ss need to be ready to learn. If their minds are not there they lose chunks of the learning so the experience needs to hook them and keep them #DitchBook
Q4: Reflections, ideas, experiences based on this quote:
"Real learning takes place when students are mentally and emotionally engaged." -- @Savvy_Educator#DitchBook#DitchSummit
A4: The best assignments are ones that inspire students to be emotionally connected to them. It is the brilliance behind Genius Hour. Lucky to have @JamiePandolf on our team who just lifted this work in her 3rd grade classroom. #DitchBook
A4: Emotional engagement is important. Help students find something they really connect with when it comes to your content. It'll pay dividends! #DitchBook
A3. Words matter but our actions matter the most. Our consistency and our genuine desire to see our students succeed is what makes our words count.#DitchBook#DitchSummit#edchat
A4: When the Ss care more than I expected, then I know they are hooked. Student, "I spent 10 hours working on my blog this semester."...It's a completion grade. #DitchBook
Awesome! We should talk -- one of the strengths of my class is that I've built a community of coaches. By the end of the semester, they're all teaching each other. It's empowering for them! #ditchbook

A4 just like anything: work, church, exercise..,we slam show up and get nothing out of it bc we go through the motions. Only when we are invested, do we grow. #ditchbook
A3 So important to think about how . we convey our message, not just the words, but what our gestures, tone, even the smallest interactions matter, be all in #ditchbook
A3 I know too many people who expect students to speak respectfully, but are not practicing respect when they speak. Think about your tone, select the right words and improve your culture #ditchbook

A4. Currently have Ss planning a colonial adventure either using my maps or tour builder. They are loving it and learning and talking and into Colonial America. Much better than memorizing facts and dates. #ditchbook
Q4: Reflections, ideas, experiences based on this quote:
"Real learning takes place when students are mentally and emotionally engaged." -- @Savvy_Educator#DitchBook#DitchSummit
A4. Ain't this the truth?! This has been a hard reality since starting to teach in the inner city. If the students are not invested, there is no point. How can we make learning relevant for all students?? #ditchbook
A4: Again relevance - if students are invested in what they are learning, then it is more meaningful. We need to foster deep understanding, rather than scratch the surface, in order for learning to last. #DitchBook
A4: Completely agree with @Savvy_Educator. Ss need to be ready to learn. As Ts we need to engage and empowering Ss. We need to create lessons that are relevant for our students. #DitchBook
A4: Bringing in things Ss are excited about, that they love, and letting it bring your content to life is a great way to engage them, make the content come to life, and #MakeItReal#DitchSummit#DitchBook
A4 giving students choices, being in the lead more where they are invested because of choice, they connect with what they are learning, more authentic and meaningful leads to more engagement #ditchbook
Have you read the book “Refugee?” If you’re an educator and you haven’t, you must. I didn’t write the review, but it echos my sentiments. I couldn’t have said it better myself. #read4fun#edchat
