Hi, I’m Bonnie, a fourth grade teacher. I’ll be popping in and out, my kids aren’t in bed yet! 🤪 I loved Anne of Green Gables, but read everything I could get my hands on. #mdeschat
A1. The summer slide slows down progress at the beginning of the year, children can catch up, but it takes a while. It’s the same for most children, but too many summers without books adds up #mdeschat
A1. In our setting, Spanish fluency is impacted in reading and oral language. Some students just need a jump start and they are back again on track others need summer support #mdeschat
A1 Def doesn’t affect everyone the same. I’m fortunate to be home with my kids. We spend the summer at playgrounds and hiking and the library. Diff experience from a summer of Fortnite. #mdeschat
A1: Students need experiences that extend and enrich critical thinking and non-cognitive skills and the summer provides opportunities to build skills. #mdeschat
Q2. We should be talking about all of the ways we learn outside of school- trips, camps, visiting relatives, shopping, playing, reading to others, going to the library, fun books #mdeschat
A2. Summer rdg kick off, incentives, opportunities to come to school & check out books wkly are ways my school plans to hold off Summer Slide #mdeschat
I've been talking to my students about how I'm going to be doing a lot of reading this summer and have been encouraging them to do the same. We are developing a reading list as a class. Possible summer book club. #mdeschat
I like to hook them. Start a chapter book as a read aloud but leave them hanging and hope they pick it up over the summer. Worked well with Wonder last year. #mdeschat
A2: Tonight as we welcomed our incoming 9th graders, they were encouraged to think about responding to social injustices as a summer activity. #mdeschat
A2. We’re throwing a kickoff to our summer reading and STEM academies tomorrow to pump it up for the kids. We’re making home visits to speak to parents next week. #mdeschat
Choose one or pick your own for helping parents beat the slide:
Library weekly
Be a reading role model
Read to your child daily
Find a good website
#mdeschat
A3. Best advice for parents? Be a reading role model, the children are watching, what do they see? If they see a reader, they’ll want to be one #mdeschat
The Scholastic #SummerReading Challenge is open! Read more about how educators, public librarians and community partner organizations can help kids keep reading all summer long: https://t.co/7g0PYVev0r
A4. Select “to” “with” and “by” books, books you’ll read to them, books to read with them, and books they can read independently by themselves #mdeschat
A4. It helps if schools can send home books regularly throughout the year as a guide, but if not a brochure w/ tips works. Also encourage interest. Ps can always read aloud harder books #mdeschat
