- Welcome, Adam! Our first question is coming up!
Thanks for chiming in to tonight's chat, Mollie!
Hi Jennifer ! you're a great choice for unfillable shoes! . PS: I'm Homa in Philly
In science we look at life span vs health care expenditures in different countries.
- thanks, Homa. Hope all is well with you!
Hi . Joe, math & STEAM coach from Palo Alto, CA, joining in.
- Interesting! What did the students think about their results?
A1: I teach 2nd grade. Our curriculum reaches into being stewards of the earth and how having a healthy planet=healthy people.
Q1 Global Refugee crisis, middle east conflict, gender issues in education, world education issues, world poverty
A1. In HS I think all the big issues are essential. From overcovered news like Daesh to undercovered extreme poverty declines.
- Hey Joe! Glad you are on tonight representing STEAM!
Sharon, Kindergarten teacher in Vermont. Exploring identity and greeting in different languages. https://t.co/w4YrMcno5Q
Hi ! Rylan in CA. I'm a curric designer at Stanford and I love current events. :) Joining for just a bit tonight.
Sorry I'm late--Jennifer D. Klein connecting from Denver tonight.
Welcome, Sharon! So glad you are starting this dialogue so early!
A1: has courses about global health and education access
We're looking forward to hearing about how teachers would like to bridge current events in the classroom.
Love how this science unit turns into an builder. https://t.co/0irZzybPJO
In science we look at life span vs health care expenditures in different countries.
Hello! Dan, Instructional Coach from CT!
- Welcome Jennifer! Glad you are on this week - should be a great conversation.
Welcome, Dan! Glad you are joining!
We're looking forward to hearing about how teachers would like to approach current events in the classroom!
My intern came up with the idea. We have an opportunity to learn from other Ss in our class.
- Hey Rylan! Glad you are able to be with us tonight!
A1: International terror attacks, Instability in Syria, & students are fascinated by Vladimir Putin
A1: Not a classroom teacher, but we do a lot around cultural/heritage understanding and empathy
Q2. Are there current issues that you’d like to cover but are currently unable to? Why?
my students are researching their own world issues (refugee crisis & gender inequality) as part of 20project
Hey Mr. Turbitt! How do those conversations work - are the kids ready to go? Do you spend considerable time in prep?
A1: I support teachers across the country & beyond w/ & , & it's more authentic to tie curriculum to real events
A1: As a grade 1 teacher, trying to promote/support global communication with my students...Twitter and Skype.
, how have you approached teaching the topic of the refugee crisis with your students?
- how do they select the issues? Any criteria set by you?
A2: I taught real-time Israeli-Palestinian conflict for years--hard & stressful bc of preconceived ideas, politics & religion
USA big health care spenders, but don't have the longest lifespan
for cultural awareness, communication skills or both? How do you frame their connections?
A1: Exploring using article Fractured Lands and lesson plans from to teach about the Middle East.
Love it. Healthy earth = healthy people.
World poverty is definitely a topic I'm passionate about.
so excited about this. Hi Neesha!
Both...just beginning...many slow steps are needed.
is such a fantastic tool for learning about the world. It lights the spark.
- how did the students react to that? Was there a take action element?
Is it like your 20% time - project of your choice to work on?
- good to know - always looking for resources to share w/educators on current topics!
the take action element was to research where all the money goes in USA - Cubans live just as long
You need to be a teacher comfortable to take risks & know your boundaries. I walk a very fine line.
Q3. What advice do you have for covering controversial international issues? What approaches/pedagogy work well?
- LOVE that your kids get to discover this independently and noodle over implications for their future!
I teach 5th gr, so it's tricky. Making it a priority to use diverse pic books/read alouds.
A2: The key to teaching controversial current events is support fr admin & parents that it matters--dangerous if not supported
A2: Not sure I understand Q2...Sorry! I want what is best for my Ss when it comes to exploring 'appropriate' global issues.
Great topic. Found it amazing to compare current Israeli history textbook to Palestinian text. Perspective!
- we had an assignment sent home today on a hot topic that required us to do together! Perfect timing for !
A3: Landmark Project example - Russian project teachers are peaceful communicators, caring about their students and success
I wrote curriculum around doing something similar w/current events, comparing news coverage of one event.
A2: I hear from teachers that they are staying away from discussing the US election.
Teachers need external support to integrate global issues - their plate if full. I bet they appreciate you
It's so important that it's part of how school works, not something "fringe" that's based on one T's views.
A3. - are you hearing from teachers about the U.S. election? - any discussions in Australia?
A2. Few CE should be off limits by gr6. We Ts are pro summarizers with good editing judgement. Voids will be filled elsewhere.
A3: More: Russian people are not well represented by the media
the in UK produced a very good doc on teaching controversial topics. think it is behind a paywall though. will look
Some of you might be able to use these resources and curriculum on teaching about the Middle East: https://t.co/mpVaTpDspy
- would love a link if you discover open access!
Q3 teaching Ss of all ages to think critically is vital to global issues. I use imagery a lot. https://t.co/94h6tVJlMw
Q3: safe space for students to share their thinking, Ts ask questions and listen, encourage evidence to support thinking
A3: Make it as relevant a learning experience as possible (i.e., they can make connections), given developmental levels of Ss.
- so powerful and engages an entirely different part of the brain to process!
Q4. Should teachers disclose their position on a controversial issue to their students?
A2: An Armenian teacher at a recent global conf said she heard one of our candidates was a madman
Q3 I currently have 147 global ed lessons I designed using global prompts to engage Ss thinking https://t.co/BQ093P8PJi
Q3 I currently have 147 global ed lessons I designed using global prompts to engage Ss thinking https://t.co/w7vBjWuSS9
A3: I put kids in pairs, give them news stories from Fox, MSNBC, & BBC on the same news story. Discussion quickly ensues
A3: seek out many different perspectives to share with students
Powerful image--I did lots on visual literacy and had Ss writing poetry about and in response to global images
Q4 Ss need background knowledge first to have their own opinion but I am open with my class as they are with me.
The election's a hot topic! One approach may be to consider the values shaping candidates' platforms: https://t.co/fhRhPNWOkt
- love the picture of the train! Want to dive deeper but have to moderate
personally i prefer not to in order to foster a classroom envir where students dont feel ostracized by teacher
Thank you! Will pass it along!
Q3 are all key global websites to engage Ss with the world. I use them almost daily.
A3. Teachers should seek resources for CE & controversial topics. No time to write relatively unbiased content on our own.
A4: Issues can be framed in terms of student logical choices without promoting a position
The students probably appreciate your sharing multiple perspectives. What topics have you covered recently?
Ask about connections students have with communities in other places. Illustrates that none of us live in isolation.
In elections past, my take has been to show both sides and teach students how to compare sources. This year...
I'm not currently teaching, developing curriculum, but very interested in right now
Be prepared for strong feelings and let students express their emotions in an appropriate way. Allow time for 'debriefing'
I also think student choice is key in determining CE to use in class
Q4: Respect for different perspectives is essential...no S should ever feel that her/his opinion is not valued...T can model.
Q5. What digital/ tools do you use in your classroom to teach current events, history, and geography?
Agreed! it is always a bummer when the conversation is just getting going and the bell rings!
We live in a comfort oriented society; Ss and Ts need to learn to lean into discomfort or we never get to what matters.
Many Ss ARE having convos on social media re controversial topics. How can Ts tap into this energy w/o squelching it?
Q5 Blogs allow the conversation to continue outside of class when students are truly engaged
Great input. How might a teacher model that all voices matter in the classroom?
i am a HUGE fan of using within my classroom!
One of many reasons I love and admire ... https://t.co/EpRyIPwcrq

A5: I need some suggestions here, please...for grade 1...any thoughts?
Do you assign blog posts for students to read as hw? Any blogs you recommend for hs student reading levels?
this looks fantastic, can't wait to spend some time exploring!
Ts doing global projects have real conversations to use as evidence for Ss voices are more alike than different
Q5: Thinking of using Virtual Reality films. Anyone have favorites? Looking at Out of Eden - https://t.co/f6964L96JJ
Show that trusting relationships with all Ss are important...invest time & energy..listen to/journey with them.
I also love for place-based learning, even if photos aren't real time. Still makes events and places REAL for Ss.
Happy for anyone to check out my classroom website https://t.co/wfDBOCaIby lots of global ed check out all the categories

Does having a school full of English Language Learners / Hispanic students count?
What would you recommend for that?
Q6. What professional development have you found to be useful re: teaching about international issues?
Global issues? I've used photos of immigration, images from Peru and South America.
Thanks for sharing the refugee camp resource. They also have a twitter account: .
We are such fans of this!
would be a good one to answer the 1st grade question
My kids have even tackled the issues of Aust. Army soldiers suffering PTSD made big melbourne papers https://t.co/4SpcSgcfvS

A4: Not sure that there's 1 A to this Q. I think it depends on the topic,situation & audience.That said, I stay neutral a lot.
A5. videos are incredible.
A? I've looked at how natural resources/geography affect development in my 4th grade class.
Fun to do w/both ancient and modern civilizations!
Facing the Future resources have worked really well for my college students -many global issues/activities
If you check out https://t.co/lqBeSJF9g8 know my class is very low socio economic kids, Aust. Poverty kids. All can learn!!!
Yes! I looked at ancient -> 1800s Peru. My Ss rocked it. Deeper discussions than HS / College.
You need to stay neutral. Gives Ss freedom to have their own voice. . Difficult.

Q: Where can we read about WHY we should teach current events. (Not just what & how)
I just want to know how VR affects our Ss neurologically/emotionally
Many kids do not know about the world, so I bring the world to them. I use the curriculum but I teach it my way.
Yes. Make their brains hurt! :)
Please share a success story about facilitating constructive student debate and deliberation.
See Homa Tavangar's books &
Structured Academic Controversy - Zoos are a good thing. 2nd gr decided together that limited preserves are
so important last few years I've spoken at world edu conference in Argentina, Brazil, Qatar, India, China - Morocco next year.
A5: I love ~ Current events that can be adjusted to meet Ss reading level!
Fav strat: using devices to collect dozens of sourced FACTS in groups. Collaborative selection of best ones. Informed debate.
Though limited by gadgets, literacy and connectivity, online animations & videos add stimulus and insight
3rd gr discussed world leaders and evaluated their leadership traits
An extremely informative and engaging chat! Sincere thanks!
Wonderful! They must have so much to share!
how to you teach critical review of those sources
Presenting at Global Conf. in Argentina, Brazil, Qatar about my classroom changed my teaching & worked with Ts in India,China
