Hi Nikki! Glad you are back for another great
Thanks for joining again this week. I loved your input last week!
Hi ! Chelsea Carvalho,7th grade inclusion in Mass!
Q1: If colleagues wrote an IEP for you to hang in classroom, what hilarious, but scary-accurate, goal would they write for you?
So excited to hear some more about goal setting in tonight's
I usually watch if I'm awake but I can't tonight, so I figured I'd stop by for a bit - miss you guys!
Thank you I am kinda a glutton for punishment ;^P
Hello Chelsea! Glad you could join us for !
and thank you as well . glad to be back.
A1: When given a class of students and no prompts, Jodi will stop encouraging her students to plan her wedding to Prince Harry.
A1: I would need a goal to help contain my energy, excitement, singing & dancing, witty jokes, & # of times I get stopped in hallway
A!; I would get a BIP. A behavior improvement plan. I alway tell staff I am the only teacher on campus with a BIP.
will participate in school social events with maximum prompting in 1 out of 5 opportunities
A1: Lately I'm sure it would be "...will be able to leave school within a reasonable amount of time..." It's February madness! ;)
I'm shocked to hear this! ;)
A1: Something about my love of talking about my cat.
A1: Something about my love of talking about my cat.
A1:I have recently learned more about the disservice that over prompting may have on our special education students
A1: I think my would sound like "teach one lesson without hurting herself and to stop being so clumsy!"
Ha! Most adults would benefit from a BIP and social stories! :)
Oh, I could probably use a goal for not tripping on or forgetting things.....
starting off with the lolz https://t.co/JD3GB7Idbv
Q1: If colleagues wrote an IEP for you to hang in classroom, what hilarious, but scary-accurate, goal would they write for you?
Q2: Goal-setting: do you write goals & step-by-step plans for self or just "yep, that's a weakness" and stab at it when you can?
Sadly, I can could see it being a real, actionable thing.
A1: By the end of the IEP year, Nikki will decrease the number of cups of coffee she drinks before 7am from 5 to 1 š
A2: I used to be a step-by-step planner, but I've turned into a "Yep, I should fix that" stabber due to lack of time/energy.
I'm sure it would be getting through the lesson without bringing in a side story ()
NOW that is a very ambitious goal! My progress report would say "showing growth" :)
A1 Will be able to make it through one hour without saying OMG or making weird dancing movements
A2: I would love to plan, but don't have the time. I tackle my weaknesses as I go based on the progress I see in the classroom
A2: I learn from social cues, my husband helps scaffold events so I don't overload w excitement, social interactions & workouts
A2. I start with the state standards (the entry points to the standards) and match to skills
A2: I am always seeking 2 improve so I guess stabbing @ it like a serial killer. Always trying 2 better students, staff & myself.
A2: What makes you think these are weaknesses? It's just part of me being me baby! š
Q3: What does goal setting mean to your students? A nice idea or something they apply to real life? Are their IEPs legal or life?
A2 I'm normally a plan type with post-it's everywhere on steps/things to do. Sometimes I'm a stab at it though
A2: I just see opportunities for growth. How can I get better? How can I push myself? and my team?
Progress is progress. Even if it's serial-killish progress. :)
A2: definitely have goals for myself - they're written out and hanging everywhere. They keep me motivated & on track
A3: Good goals are best if they improve an area of life and if students have a choice in what goals/accomplishments are its better
Hi ! Rachel Sped Tchr from NE Indiana, jumping in late.
A3: I conference w Ss after each qtr to discuss progress & develop personal goals for nxt term, it makes it real 4 them
Glad to see you for another ! Ready for the snow this week?
Q4: How do you think we could better use goal setting with students? How do we make them compliant, yet meaningful to them?
I write the legally required stuff, but include functional goals. I look @ the whole student & not just cover our legal bases.
A3: goal setting w Ss is nice, but they need to have ownership and buy in. This can be modeled, but they need to want it
That's my motto...move past compliance and into services. People over paperwork.
A3. In HS life skills class transition IEP's are life. They are driven by student needs related to ind. living. Very functional
A3: I try to create meaningful goals with students, families and the team and scaffold benchmarks to work towards overall goal
A4: Ss need to help determine their goals based on what they want/need to improve. Then they own their goals & progress.
A3 My school sets goals all the time sped or not. My sped kids know what their goals are because it's apart of their life
A3: I'm always trying to think big picture with 21st century skills, life skills, and student driven goals
A4: When students are brought into the process and have a voice, they buy in and work towards the goals.
A4.1st steps: Making the goal explicit, and asking Ss how they think they are doing. Providing feedback on progress I see.
A4: Ss & I discuss their strengths/weaknesses and they attend IEP meetings when possible, helps establish accountability
Q3: While all goals should be focused on "life" versus legality, I find this especially important when transition is added in
A3: While all goals should be focused on "life" versus legality, I find this especially important when transition is added in
A3: goals should be on what they need, and shared with them. They need to have ownership in order to be successful.
A4: Rates, frequencies, and percentages are not always meaningful. What else do you use out there for outcome goals?
I work very hard with getting our students to be self-advocating. And I see them growing for it.
I work very hard with getting our students to be self-advocating. And I see them growing for it.
completely agree! If they are involved in the process, it gives them ownership and motivation
As severe sped T, I'm a little confused about what you all are referring to about "legality/life" destinction?
I agree. Ownership is a huge part of it. Doing things WITH kids and not TO kids!
Q5: What professional area do you know you SHOULD make goal, but don't write down to avoid own accountability? Write the goal now.
A4: Teach goal setting. Help Ss to own their data, focus on reflection. I love the idea of student collected data notebooks.
A4: I strive to have my students help develop the "plan of attack," especially for academic goals, so they feel that connection
A4 Discuss with them what they want to work on, where they want to improve. They buy in if it's applicable to them.
A5: . Study for and Take the GRE so that I can apply to a Doctoral Program!
A5: Apply for a grad program in behavior therapy and specialize in autism and social skills development - it's where my <3 is!
A5: I need to take my ATP exam that I've been putting off forever due to cost. Just need to do it.
No, on campus. Indiana University. Gasp! GRE makes me want to hide under a blanket! :)
Great chat tonight folks. I've gotta go. Hope to be able to stop in again soon!
seems to me that we have similar goals! We better get on them!
A5: I am always there to help others and I love it. However, sometimes I get involved with many things at once & have to juggle em
A5: I need a goal to take my cape off & stop saving the day. I need to let others fail. But I can't let them or the kids get hurt
Do you have any great GRE study tips? I am all ears!
Oh..you have a cape? So does . I want one now....
The GRE has kept me from applying too. Been a while since I was in school so i worry about it
A5: I have professional goals all over the place, I need to maybe focus limit my focus. Too many irons in the fire.
Again, I'm shocked to read this. ;)
I've purchased numerous books, study guides, and practice exams! It's all motivation now - just do it!
A5 Lesson planning. I will take time to plan more meaningful small group lessons for my students in order to maximize progress
me too! Funny thing is the books just sit there giving me the stink eye! :)
I wondered who would mention my cape first... :)
Sometimes I get so deep in OFFERING PD that I forget to seek some for myself!
The rest of the time I play fireman. so i have a hat, coat and a hose as well.
Can goals b set 4 Ss in app? Need a day to explore app-surface act w/ sped Ss-
hahaha! I might need to borrow your cape soon! However, I'm going to be-dazzle it and make it sparkly
I'm literally in the exact same boat! Trying to find time to study for GRE is hard... https://t.co/E2kJo2WzWX
A5: Apply for a grad program in behavior therapy and specialize in autism and social skills development - it's where my <3 is!
Um, it's already hot pink and silver!
Q6: Looking at others' "Should Do" goals, do you see any that are your strengths? Give advice to make easier for them to achieve.
the program I am looking at doesn't require GRE - however, I still think I should take it for my phD
Can we just get a cloak of invisibilty so we can hide ?
They will ALWAYS find you. Always.
A6: For the goals - I just ask that they That would suffice. And it they struggle - Chunk them.
A5: spend more time researching effective behavior interventions and plans...Ross Greene has been my bff lately š
not throw out the goal, but small steps.....
Maybe we need to form a big study group! :)
Q7: What is your professional goal for yourself in 10 years? Admin, additional endorsement? Do you have a plan? Have you started?
I like that better. Gang sounds more fun.
No gangs. Gangs are bad news, kids.
A6: tackle the most important 1st, and don't forget to take time for yourself! It's important 4 your success
A7: Professional Goal #1 - World Domination #2 Administration
A7: My 10-year goal is to finish grad school and be working as an assistive tech specialist for a school corporation.
A7: My goal is to continue to make a difference & inspire as many as I can w whatever plan is in store for me 10 years down road
love this! High fives girl!
Basically the same thing. :)
I was think'n Big Deloris in Hope Floats. She had a gang. It was called Big Deloris.
: 10 Year goal besides owning a unicorn & world domination? Empowering Ss with disabilities to change the world!
: 10 Year goal besides owning a unicorn & world domination? Empowering Ss with disabilities to change the world!
Can I ride your unicorn? I have a unicorn-riding helmet that matches my cape.
A7: I plan - Masters in ABA Therapy, CAGS in ADM, and develop my own program for ASD inclusion w. academics and social skills
Having a dance off between our class and is definitely a long term epic goal.
A7: Also, empower my students to see their potential and become active members in society! They need to believe they can do it!
High Five, lady! It will happen. And when it does... wants to be there!
Hey Twitterverse, why should educators, especially be on Twitter? How do you use it?
A7: Administration...I would also like to find a position that allows for me to research/analyze post secondary longitudinal data
A7: I really just want to marry Prince Harry and live happily ever after. I'll take a unicorn as a consolation prize to my prince.
A7 I would ideally like to be working with PPCD using my ABA skills to work with an autism population
Awesome. Have you ever checked out what we are doing over at Goodwill?
Q8: What are your students' 10-year goals? How do students know when they have achieved the goal? How do they know their plan?
Easy. Encouragement. Professional relationships. Gain information. Get Help. Secret handshake.
If not, you should. Goodwill does AWESOME things in education! Best teaching job I ever had!! :)
For happening right now! Best on the Twitterverse.
A8: Overthrowing me for world domination. Become happy people who are successful at what they choose.
A8: Honestly, our goals are focused on today. Small steps will eventually lead to big gains!
Q9: Write a goal for your school's teachers that you really wish you could work on together this year (don't be cheesy-be honest).
A7 Personal: Chasing a toddler...own a home, and a bowling league...maybe?
A Bowling league...now you are talking! :)
our teachers coteach. Twitter is a great way to dig into content areas as well as ideas for teaming https://t.co/4Fa0lGbB01
Hey Twitterverse, why should educators, especially be on Twitter? How do you use it?
We could have a bowling league. I need a lot of bowling accommodations.
A8 We're focusing on the nearer foreseeable future. They write and track their progress with their Big Goal in mind
I have a couple friends that work for different Excel Centers in Indy! They love it also š
Can we get shirts?
Anyone have an idea for a team name?
A9: My wish is that all teachers care for &respect students like their own children.Remember they are children & you matter to em
That would seem appropriate in light of the twitter convo tonight
A9: that we all have a positive mindset regarding our digital transformation and embrace the changes/opportunities it brings
I've told people I have a "crooked arm" when it comes to bowling
I just like to make others feel good about their bowling skills.
Q10: What is your biggest take-away from tonight? Something you want to try? Something you learned?
A9: To realize that students w BD would if they could, and to work together to determine what is best for all Ss
A10: I learned that I'm not the only caped teacher, other people are getting unicorns, & we're forming a bowling league.
Ahhhh..another Ross Green Fan.
A.9 Work collaboratively, as equals, in determining what is best for each S and how to best assess each Sās accomps
A9: During the IEP year, I will complete my task when prompted by the 4th time......
Time to wrap up tonight! Thanks for the great (& off-topic) dialogue. Continue to use the hashtag as you finish your chats! :)
WHAT??? He skypes in live-time?? I'm so jealous!!!
A10: That we all struggle with our own personal goals because we put the needs of Ss before our own
Well me, you, and should form a fan club!
We will storify this chat and post later tonight so you can catch any missed tweets & check out all the posted links & resources.
A10 Other ppl have the GRE blues and we're joining a bowling league!

Enjoyed another awesome tonight! Now it's back to writing goals š
