Q1: How can Teachers encourage students to do their best, while not add stress to students lives? #mschat
  • blocht574 - Moderator Apr 27 @ 8:08 PM EDT
opps Not adding stress to lives! #mschat
  • blocht574 - Moderator Apr 27 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A1: Try to make sure students are prepared and aware that test is just a snap shot of one day. (and we all have bad pic days!) #mschat
  • Teachr4 Apr 27 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A1 It all starts with relationships. Ss will want to do well for teachers they respect. #mschat
  • breanneg2011 Apr 27 @ 8:09 PM EDT
A1 Ts can celebrate the little things. Give the Ss motivation to want to. They'll give you their best when they know you care! #mschat
  • SusZanti5 Apr 27 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1: Listen well-always remain positive-be proactive and encouraging-step back and let Ss discover learning #mschat
  • BayleeKnippling Apr 27 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1: I think the biggest thing that can help is making learning fun and sneaking in the content so they don't think they're learning. #mschat
  • blocht574 - Moderator Apr 27 @ 8:10 PM EDT
YES agreed but sometimes that adds stress and makes some students upset when they don't do as well as they expected. #mschat
    In reply to @Teachr4
  • mmoran16edu Apr 27 @ 8:10 PM EDT
A1: Make small improvements on content in order to promote small amounts of learning to avoid stress #mschat
  • blocht574 - Moderator Apr 27 @ 8:11 PM EDT
Agreed Learning has to be FUN but are the standardized high stakes tests? not really #mschat
    In reply to @BayleeKnippling
  • BradLatzke Apr 27 @ 8:11 PM EDT
    Please re-post Q1. #mschat
  • BrysonBridget Apr 27 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1: overall mssge from school is key. One more day to show what u know vs chants, pep rallies and bribes - not a fan of all that! #mschat
  • Teachr4 Apr 27 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1 If we teach students to be critical readers & writers through the year, testing season is less stressful for all. #mschat
  • Teachr4 Apr 27 @ 8:12 PM EDT
    Absolutely! #mschat
    In reply to @breanneg2011
  • JoveStickel Apr 27 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A1 Begins with creating a culture & atmosphere of testing being a way to gain data about what S know & don't know not about results #mschat
  • Beyond_the_Desk Apr 27 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A1: If we do the best we can to make those kinds of questions/thinking part of day-to-day, they'll feel confident & ready #mschat
  • mrskochheiser Apr 27 @ 8:12 PM EDT

  • blocht574 - Moderator Apr 27 @ 8:13 PM EDT
Thanks for joining in Kristin #mschat
    In reply to @mrskochheiser
  • BayleeKnippling Apr 27 @ 8:13 PM EDT
I completely agree! I think sneaking in those test taking strategies while they're learning is huge and so is Ss confidence #mschat
    In reply to @blocht574
  • Mr_Lisek Apr 27 @ 8:14 PM EDT
A1: I always tell the Ss not to worry about scores or results. Just ask them to give their best. Talk about all the +s from year. #mschat
  • mrskochheiser Apr 27 @ 8:14 PM EDT

    In reply to @blocht574
  • breanneg2011 Apr 27 @ 8:14 PM EDT
Perfectly said! Need to demystify the test! Sometimes they hear test so much it turns into a huge thing when they've put in so much #mschat
    In reply to @Teachr4
  • Beyond_the_Desk Apr 27 @ 8:14 PM EDT
Yes, but w/ balance. I think we need to make the academic targets clear so they know what they're reaching toward. Visible learning. #mschat
    In reply to @BayleeKnippling
  • BrysonBridget Apr 27 @ 8:14 PM EDT
A1.2 I told my Ss that it was celebration of what they knew-chance to show off. Don't know if they bought it, but rm was relaxed 😂 #mschat
  • blocht574 - Moderator Apr 27 @ 8:15 PM EDT
YES Key is to focus on positive and WHAT their growth areas are #mschat
    In reply to @Mr_Lisek
  • blocht574 - Moderator Apr 27 @ 8:15 PM EDT
A1: Remind students of all the ways they have grown during year: Socially, Emotionally, Physically and intellectually #mschat
  • skeeTX Apr 27 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A1: Ts need to find a way to intrinsically motivate Ss by finding out what matters to them. Need relationship to do so #mschat
  • blocht574 - Moderator Apr 27 @ 8:17 PM EDT
Yes those relationships do go a long way in education! #mschat
    In reply to @skeeTX
  • blocht574 - Moderator Apr 27 @ 8:18 PM EDT
Q2: What do standardize test really tell us? #mschat How quickly do Ts and Ss need results?
  • kennethdward Apr 27 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A1 Starts with an atmosphere built around learning & not just completing the process! #mschat
  • stupidtalk Apr 27 @ 8:18 PM EDT
my last school principal announced May1 that it was testing season. that's 1/5 of our school year #mschat
  • kennethdward Apr 27 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A2 Standardized tests give us truth but only part of the truth. The data is needed as absolutely soon as possible #mschat
  • skeeTX Apr 27 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A2: tests give us data from an exercise done on a given day. They don't say anything a/b Ss emotions/state of mind on that day #mschat
  • blocht574 - Moderator Apr 27 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A2: Snapshot of where student's learning is ... would be great to get results instantaneously .... Feedback should be ASAP #mschat
  • BayleeKnippling Apr 27 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A2: I think it would benefit Ts and Ss if results were posted right away, b/c you can tell what needs/doesn't need to be changed #mschat
  • BradLatzke Apr 27 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A2 Standardized test results tell us how well students do on standardized tests. #mschat
  • mmoran16edu Apr 27 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A2: Me being a student still, not sure what it tells us. Seems like it tells us how well students can memorize #mschat
  • Beyond_the_Desk Apr 27 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A2: I think they're honestly more abt govt accountability. Get our usable data from formative & benchmark testing in-house #mschat
  • JoveStickel Apr 27 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A2 feedback needs to come back to us quicker and with IBD prior to the next year but often doesn't. #mschat
  • breanneg2011 Apr 27 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A2 STs give us data on one particular day. Valid but there's still some variables. I want the results before next school year...cont #mschat
  • BrysonBridget Apr 27 @ 8:21 PM EDT
As compared to the week before winter break? First semester already over #mschat
    In reply to @blocht574
  • blocht574 - Moderator Apr 27 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A2: Only tells us what is being measured.. Most standardized tests are limited in what they measure #mschat
  • breanneg2011 Apr 27 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A2cont: Id rather start my year off fixing things that didn't go wrong rather than wait for the results a couple of months later. #mschat
  • mrskochheiser Apr 27 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A2) Standardized tests are a snapshot of one day in time; immediate results like NWEA more helpful than those 8 mo later like MSTEP #mschat
  • stupidtalk Apr 27 @ 8:21 PM EDT
    A2. almost nothing. #mschat
  • JoveStickel Apr 27 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A2 cont. I don't think standardized tests can give us an accuarate view of all student knowledge not differentiated for learners #mschat
  • blocht574 - Moderator Apr 27 @ 8:22 PM EDT
YEAH sadly we got scores in December from last spring ... not very helpful #mschat
    In reply to @BrysonBridget
  • blocht574 - Moderator Apr 27 @ 8:22 PM EDT
A2: Our students have so many skills/talents that will never be measured by a standardized test!!! #mschat
  • breanneg2011 Apr 27 @ 8:22 PM EDT
A2: STs don't tell us how much worth a S has, how successful they will be in the future, or how much they are capable of all yr long #mschat
  • BradLatzke Apr 27 @ 8:22 PM EDT
And little or no value in analyzing results to improve learning during current school year. #mschat
    • stupidtalk Apr 27 @ 8:18 PM EDT
my last school principal announced May1 that it was testing season. that's 1/5 of our school year #mschat

    In reply to @blocht574, @BrysonBridget
  • skeeTX Apr 27 @ 8:22 PM EDT
How many employees take standardized tests in their given field? #mschat
  • stupidtalk Apr 27 @ 8:22 PM EDT
they inform of us of socioeconomic status and parent involvement #mschat
  • Beyond_the_Desk Apr 27 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A2 cont: Results can help us see broad strengths/weaknesses but too late for ind instr use #mschat
  • kennethdward Apr 27 @ 8:23 PM EDT
gosh, we won't get scores from this year until Oct. We thought that was terrible. Yikes! #mschat
  • BrysonBridget Apr 27 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A2.2 I understand breadth of data creating a statewide - maybe district - picture, but otherwise, not too much to help me plan! #mschat
  • blocht574 - Moderator Apr 27 @ 8:23 PM EDT
SAD ... I also hate how we compare this yrs students to previous ... NO HELP to instruction #mschat
    In reply to @mrskochheiser, @BrysonBridget
  • breanneg2011 Apr 27 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A2: We know differentiated inst. is necessary for effective teaching and learning. When will we decide STs don't work for all too?! #mschat
  • Mr_Lisek Apr 27 @ 8:24 PM EDT
A2: Standardized tests provide one point of the triangulation of data to understand Ss proficiency level. #mschat
  • blocht574 - Moderator Apr 27 @ 8:25 PM EDT
YEAH it was new test/system but supposed to give us faster feedback, state trying to fix #mschat
    In reply to @kennethdward
  • BradLatzke Apr 27 @ 8:25 PM EDT
Did poorly on adult test? Take it over again without penalty. High stakes testing in school is one shot, pressure ladened. #mschat
    • skeeTX Apr 27 @ 8:22 PM EDT
How many employees take standardized tests in their given field? #mschat
  • BrysonBridget Apr 27 @ 8:25 PM EDT
Coming from the U.K. I am used to national tests - but they meant sthg & mattered. Very different concept. #mschat
  • mrskochheiser Apr 27 @ 8:25 PM EDT
Exactly. Many T contracts moving toward merit pay based on these one day snapshots. Hard to improve w/ old data on Ss who are gone.#mschat
    In reply to @blocht574, @BrysonBridget
  • blocht574 - Moderator Apr 27 @ 8:26 PM EDT
A2: really struggle when states are compared that take completely different tests .. really need to look at student growth #mschat
  • kennethdward Apr 27 @ 8:27 PM EDT
Pay based on test scores is BAD! Not what those tests were designed to do. #mschat
    • mrskochheiser Apr 27 @ 8:25 PM EDT
Exactly. Many T contracts moving toward merit pay based on these one day snapshots. Hard to improve w/ old data on Ss who are gone.#mschat

  • blocht574 - Moderator Apr 27 @ 8:27 PM EDT
Merit pay is an entirely other mess in education ... Could be another couple hour chat #mschat
    In reply to @mrskochheiser, @BrysonBridget
  • BayleeKnippling Apr 27 @ 8:28 PM EDT
A2: Some test makers are only based in one state, so the tests are biased in the info, but it's hard to get Ss to see past that #mschat
  • kennethdward Apr 27 @ 8:28 PM EDT
Also makes it hard to get T's to focus on student learning which will get good test scores instead everyone is focused on the TEST! #mschat
    • mrskochheiser Apr 27 @ 8:25 PM EDT

You bring a valid point but students have so much real stress in life/school .. tests should not add to it! #mschat

  • BayleeKnippling Apr 27 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A3: 1) have a meeting with Ts, not Principals to teach how to analyze results 2) send info home or mock results and an analysis #mschat
  • BrysonBridget Apr 27 @ 8:31 PM EDT
A3: my P sent awesome lttr to Ps - how test was a snapshot in time, that the tching was done & Ss job was gd night sleep & bfast #mschat
  • breanneg2011 Apr 27 @ 8:31 PM EDT
A3 Inform Ps that their test results don't make their child. Explain what it's for. Realize it's just a broad view on a certain day #mschat
