Evening #3rdchat! I'm Sara from Missoula, MT! Finally, back from my trip to the Dominican Republic! My favorite card game is 500 because I used to play with my cousins and grandparents.
Hello! I am Lesa Haney. I learn alongside amazing 3rd graders in Austin, TX. My current favorite card game is Go Fish. We just taught our grandkids how to play, and it is fun to be able to play with them. #3rdchat
Hi all, Priya from Singapore. Enjoying the holidays with family. We have been playing Rummikub (mix of Rummy & Mahjong) but a more family friendly version #3rdchat
Hi #3rdchat! I'm Tiffany joining in from Virginia. Euchre was my fav, but no one around here plays (I guess its a northern thing), so I'll go with Skipbo.
A1: Coach. Good coaches set clear expectations, build life-long relationships, and work with players until they are game-ready. Here is a blog post I wrote last year about learning on the field and in the classroom. https://t.co/ePDKYUnbFZ#3rdchat#bethewildcard
A1: Primarily facilitator. However, I find that I utilize a blend of teaching styles throughout the day. There are even times I direct teach skills whole group (gasp!) #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A1: I would say a mix of direct instruction and collaboration. I teach mini-lessons whole group then collaborate and work together, while I act as the facilitator. #3rdchat@JuliePJones
A2: I have big ideas & look for creative ways to bring them to life. My mindset allows me to be student-centered. Most of all, I love my job & my students. I tell my students often that I love them & I look forward to seeing them each day. Just like family #3rdchat#bethewoldcard
A1: I use various strategies throughout the day (everyday) depending on the lesson, subject, difficulty, etc. Sometimes I feel like it's organized chaos bc I am constantly trying to make connections (ELA to Math/Math to ELA) to show relevancy of what the Ss are learning. #3rdchat
A1: I think I have a flexible instructional style. I get to know my students and try to do what I can to meet their needs. I like doing whole group when needed, small groups to zone in on strategies, etc. #3rdchat
A1: I change up what I do depending on the content. I love to let Ss explore first, and work cooperatively, then share and guide. I still do whole group direct instruction as well as lots of small groups. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A2: I encourage my Ss to be creative and take risks. I also enjoy having Ss "experts" lead small groups. It's a confidence builder!
#3rdchat#bethewildcard
I find it easy to be honest with my kiddos when the lesson didn't go as planned...I value their feedback, and often times they help me think outside the box!
#3rdchat
Some strengths I bring are my enthusiasm and passion for my children and teaching. Since so have no children of my own - they are my children!! #3rdchat
A1: Cheerleader/wise aunt- I encourage my kids like its nobody's business. I think I am good at subtly teaching them/getting them to do things they don't want to. Like when your cool aunt comes & tricks you into eating veggies your mom couldn't. (FYI- sped T for K-5) #3rdchat
A2: One of my strengths is being ok with letting go - I am always finding ways for my students to be the teachers. They "present" their learning during all subjects by showing and explaining their thinking. #3rdchat
A2: Some strengths I bring are goal setting, establishing a classroom family environment, and positive student rapport. I want my students to love learning and know that no matter what I support them and their growth and learning in and out of the class. #3rdchat@JuliePJones
A2 Being flexible, showing understanding & compassion, taking risks, working with my Ss as teammates. “We are learning & growing together” I have passion for drama, history & reading. I share that authenticity #3rdchat
A2: I am a great listener communicator. I make it a point to model strong communication among Ss and adults in my class. I'm also a huge cheerleader and fan of enthusiasm, which gets my kids excited to learn. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A2: The love of learning. I am always working on improving my craft through professional development opportunities, Twitter chats, or by reading books. I am lucky enough to work in a place where I can try the new things that I learn. #3rdchat
A2 I build strong relationships. My kids know I love them and my classroom is a safe place. We are all comfortable making mistakes and are there for each other. #3rdchat
A1) I like to do more hands on activities. I believe sensory experiences helps in long term retention of knowledge. I also enjoy learning about my Ss interests and using that in my lesson plans #3rdchat
A3: Sometimes, when I am in my coaching style, I get so focused on the goal, I can forget to rest my students. I need to remember resting periods are just as important as the rigorous learning. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
This past school year one of the Ss favorite activities was when Ss taught small coding groups that created video games! Super fun and great engagement! #3rdchat
A3: My small group teaching style is going to get a major make over this year. I want to shift to more inquiry and less direct teach during this time. Also looking to add more technology. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A2: My strength are in building positive relationships with students and setting a tone for a positive family learning community. I have also taught all grades 1st-5th. It is helpful in knowing where they have came from and where they are headed. #3rdchat
A3: I am really good at focusing in on ss strengths and weaknesses. I do a LOT of small group. I am passionate about helping my ss succeed and building relationships with them. #3rdchat
A3 I would like to continue over no forward with a more PBL like approach/inquiry style to engage Ss to think critically while also promoting & fostering problem solving strategies. This is a work in progress #3rdchat
A3: My discard pile will consist of some of the worksheets I used because they contain "Word Vomit." I am going to try to be more attentive to the application process and rigor.
#3rdchat
A2) Love of learning, constantly seeking to learn more from everyone around me, Empathy & compassion, passion based inquiry are my strengths that I bring in and model in my classroom #3rdchat
A3: Some changes I would like to make to my instructional style would be to remember my students still need to have their voice heard and take the lead on showcasing their learning (student choice) #3rdchat@JuliePJones
A3: I would like to give my Ss more empowerment and choice. I know there are lessons I could change up to provide them with this opportunity. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
Sorry I'm late to join. I try to connect their learning cross curricular. I too tell them that I love them everyday! Style is spontaneous when current events/ call for further exploration because Ss get excited to learn. #3rdchat
A4: I can't say there is a specific technique I use to get to know my students' interests. I just talk with them and listen. I also incorporate student voice and student agency whenever I can. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A3: I would like to amp up the energy level and unexpected/engaging lessons. I find this easier to do when I have a whole class than when I have small groups like I do now most of the time, so I'm brainstorming ways to improve this in small groups. #3rdchat
A3 I need to discard the feeling that I need to "cover" the curriculum. I worry when I am not able to get to every thing. I actually need to focus on teaching the children. #3rdchat
A4: Before school even starts I send out this form. https://t.co/XG9DziMw90
It has a video prompt from @spencerideas and asks kids to list 5 things they want their teacher to know. I learned so much that I could start building on that very first day! #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A4: Building relationships is CRITICAL! At the start of the school year I will start small lunch bunches each week. Taking a interest and sharing my interests too! #3rdchat
A4: I find out about my students interests and passions by doing student inventories, Roll with Me game, and just spending time with my students! #3rdchat@JuliePJones
A4 I try and listen to their conversations and I ask them what they like and dislike. I use opportunities when they are sharing to chime in and share my likes which helps make connections. #3rdchat
A4: I find out about my Ss interests and passions during our morning meetings. I also gain a lot of insight through their writing. Even visits before and after school are so important in learning who they are as individuals. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A4: We do a ME bag the first week of school where kids bring things to show&tell, plus Celebration time once a week...we send home an inventory to get Ps perspective, too. #3rdchat
A4 We have a set day & time to work on passion projects. This is a sacred time. Ss value it. I also have lunch w/ Ss, book clubs, morning meetings, read aloud & discussions, recess time #3rdchat
A4: Within the first week, I ask them to write a letter of introduction telling me about themselves, their family, and special interests and model it by writing one to them. Some are quite involved and others are short but it is a beginning. #3rdchat
A3 I want to deliver more creative lessons as well as continue my work in math instruction with math workshop, guided math and small group this year I am adding math Number talks. #3rdchat
A4: When I am curious about my students' lives and passions it sets a tone in the classroom that opens up so many possibilities for learning. Relationships are the beginning and the end of learning. #3rdchat
I agree with @Ron_Martiello I talk and listen to them. This is another reason why I love small groups. It makes it easier to have conversations with them and get to know them better. #3rdchat
A4: I do the traditional get to know you things at the beginning of the year, but I also ask throughout the year. I pay attention to what they're talking about, what they're reading, what toys they're sneaking to school, etc. I eat lunch w/ them everyday. I let them dj. #3rdchat
A4) I share with Ss, things I learn and hobbies that I pursue (with why). Eventually students get excited to share what they are interested in #3rdchat
A4: We ask for parents to fill out a quick google form that helps us get to know their child at the beginning of the yr. I also have lunch with my kiddos quite a bit. My ELAR partner also shares their writing with me if it's something personal or interesting.
#3rdchat
The 1st week of school I bring a roll of toilet paper. We sit in a circle on rug. Students tear off however many squares they think they need. I pull off my squares last. We go around circle & they tell something about themselves for each square they pulled off the roll. #3rdchat
A4: I agree with @Ron_Martiello I talk and listen to them. This is another reason why I love small groups. It makes it easier to have conversations with them and get to know them better. #3rdchat

Q5: Think about your goals for next year. How can your classroom environment reflect those goals?
#3rdchat#bethewildcard
A5: I currently have a superhero classroom theme. I am going to keep it, but up the game and repurpose some of the areas. I also want to adjust my Classroom YouTube videos to support our brand Super University. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
Hola. Very late, didn’t know there was a 3rd grade chat on Twitter! 😊 Edwin. 3rd grade teacher in Philadelphia. Finished up my first year two weeks ago. My favorite card game is spoons, but also can’t go wrong with Uno. 👍🏼 Love to connect with other 3rd grade teachers.#3rdChat
A5: Classroom environment can reflect my goals for next year by having more student choice, collaboration, and having fun learning while building up our classroom family. #3rdchat@JuliePJones
A5: I don't have a theme. My room looks more like a living room. I have a couch, various seating options, and several tables for collaborative work. Student collaboration is my primary goal and I want my room to continue to reflect that. #3rdchat
A1: Being that it was my first year, I don’t know if I have definite teaching style. I was kind of a mix of a few instructional styles. I’d love to be more of a facilitator. #3rdChat
A5 I am working on making my goals for this coming year, but I already feel setting up the right environment is key; growth mindset, collaboration and clear expectations are high on my list. #3rdchat
A5: I'm definitely inspired by the engagement brought by classroom transformations. I think they would bring so much excitement to our safe and loving classroom environment. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A5: My biggest goals are to have a more consistent schedule and do some exciting co-teaching lessons w/room transformations. I want to up the energy level and engagement. I don't plan on changing my classroom drastically as it is used for testing & needs to be calming. #3rdchat

Q5: Think about your goals for next year. How can your classroom environment reflect those goals?
#3rdchat#bethewildcard
I used FlipGrid this year for Math Talks. Ss used their white boards to explain how to solve problems. This gave me a quick assmt on who got it and who didn't. Plus it supported our speaking and listening standards. #3rdchat
A6: When I need the attention of the students, I stand up and close my eyes. The students get quiet and encourage each other to listen. After about 15 seconds, the class is ready to listen. It is the quietest way to get their attention & it saves my voice. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A2: Flexibility was one of my strengths to the classroom. Also, though I need to do a better job, be more understanding and building relationships with my students and parents. #3rdChat
A5: I try to create a safe and welcoming learning community. The students work where they learn best, and are always encouraged to learn in groups if they chose. Hopefully, this will help with more small group learning. #3rdchat
A5 The structure of my units will allow me to design opportunities or some PBL & personalized learning. I can have a good outline, but I will need to know my children in order to begin working them. I can work on structuring our schedule #3rdchat
A6: Setting clear expectations from the beginning helps to set the stage! Addressing Ss quietly also is an attention getter when redirection is needed.
#3rdchat#bethewildcard
A5 My goals for next year involve being a support for all our new faculty. I want everyone to feel welcome to come in my room - students and other teachers! #3rdchat
A6: Students are encouraged to show others they are the BEST 3rd graders and we also do a Fabuous Fun Day celebration on the last Friday of each month to reward positive behavior for the month. #3rdchat@JuliePJones
A3: Kind of mentioned it in the first question, but I would love to be more of a facilitator rather than doing most of the teaching to my students. I also wanted to up my small group and guided reading instruction. #3rdChat
A4: By just talking to them. I really got to know my students I have a the conversations I would have with them whether it will be before school started or after school or even during lunchtime. #3rdChat
Classroom will have more spaces for Ss activities/works in process. The classroom is a room we share. I try to create a colorful, active, welcoming room. This yearI want to also improve room by showcasing more Ss outstanding work. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
We say "Tigers, Paws Up" Kind of like Give me 5. It isn't just me that does it. The kids do it as well. It is fun to see a group of kids get excited and want to share something and say "Tigers, paws up!" #3rdchat
A6: Wow, I am at a loss...I'm not sure that I have any tricks to share...I just make sure that my students know that we all make mistakes and there isn't a thing in the world that they can't come to me about. I want them to know they can be honest.
#3rdchat
A6: The key to classroom management is relationships. I also like to move around the room and become part of the learning and groups. Asking questions and authentically listening helps establish respect and responsibility. #3rdchat
A6 I think if your room is engaging and you have built positive relationships your s's feel comfortable, safe, and free to learn. Classroom management becomes a non-issue. #3rdchat
A6: I think classroom management reflects the consistent and high expectations you reinforce daily AND the relationships you build with the students. I'm a very positive person and using 4:1 really helps too. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A6 I find that being transparent & using the children as partners in planning when possible helps make many things more manageable. They feel valued & responsible #3rdchat
A5: I really want my classroom to be a welcoming environment where students want to come and enjoy learning. Problem I’m going to have is space; Going into a smaller room with a larger group of students (32 as of now) 😱. I gotta be creative with space. #3rdChat
Build your best possible hand.
Q5: Think about your goals for next year. How can your classroom environment reflect those goals?
#3rdchat#bethewildcard
A6: I definitely use call backs (Hands On Top = That Means Stop), Ss have jobs (assistants), they are also "responsible" for their table partner when they are absent or pulled (rsp/speech) - My 3rd graders this year were all about the classroom being theirs. #3rdchat
A6. Identify the leader in the class. The student the other students looks up to. Build a relationship with him/her and let him/her model your expectations. #3rdChat
A6 I think if your room is engaging and you have built positive relationships your s's feel comfortable, safe, and free to learn. Classroom management becomes a non-issue. #3rdchat
A6: As a first year teacher, I had some pretty “decent” classroom management from what my admin and colleagues told me. With the group I had, I had to be firm, but fair. Stay true to what you say. Kids will pick up on that. #3rdChat
I've also just stood somewhere in the room and held up 3 fingers (making eye contact with at least one S)...then slowly counting down without saying a word. #3rdchat
A6: Consistency is 🔑. Start w/ high expectations & don't lower them. I use several different call and response phrases to keep them on their toes. Personally, I prefer to praise the positive & ignore the negative (as much as possible). Brag tags and positive referrals #3rdchat
Awesome! I like it! I also liked @hopekingteach 's example "Sharkbait". "Sharkbait Hoohaha!" I used to love watching "Finding Nemo" with my own kids and that part cracked us up. #3rdChat
A7: I would like to start implementing a brain break area of my classroom. I want students to be able to choose ways to relax and recharge, so they can return and engage fully in the learning activity. #3rdchat#BeTheWildCard
A7 still a work in progress it I like to get the Ss moving it awakens their minds and bodies I use @GoNoodle and other exercises I would like to also incorporate @calm next year. #3rdchat
I am glad you got feedback from colleagues. Always remember to keep asking them for their input. They are your best cheerleaders to help you learn and grow. #3rdchat
A7: I increase energy level in my classroom by relating content to the real world and have the students become the "scientists, author, math investigator, etc" so they get excited about their 'job' they are to fulfill while learning. #3rdchat@JuliePJones
A7: Well, for one thing, my classroom is more student led instead of me working harder than they are. And we'll be incorporating more brain breaks.
#3rdchat
When I was finished with my 40th year I was very active on Twitter and my learning curve soared upward. It is all a continuum of starting where you are and moving forward ... #3rdchat
A7: I’m all caught up now haha. Brain/snack breaks. We had last lunch @ 12:54, but first prep. I had them for 3 hours straight after their prep. A lot of my kids were hungry and needed energy. Once I incorporated more snack breaks and brain breaks, the energy was back. #3rdchat
A7. Instead of a timer I would use soft music. Telling a student they have 2 songs instead of 8 minutes worked really well. I also loved I was able to pick the song. #hiddenpositivemessage#eyeofthetigeronrepeat#3rdchat
A8: My students & I talk about productive struggle. This means I will not give them the answer. They will need to ask questions and utilize whatever resources they have to complete the learning task. They have to lean on each other and work together. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A7: When one of our friends deserves a cheer, we cheer for each other. We keep it very casual by telling jokes, dancing with @GoNoodle and teaching each other new things. My best ideas come straight from them and what they are passionate about. #3rdchat
A7: Music, "cliffhangers", games, more hands on, room transformations, etc. can all build energy, and I want to do more of those things, but mostly I think I need to make sure I bring it every single day. #3rdchat
A8 Ss have choice in their learning either through the process, project or product. They are able to make choices & evaluations their journey in a safe place #3rdchat
A8: When my students share their work on @Seesaw, they reflect on it and check their understanding. It’s a great way to see or hear their thinking! #3rdchat
A8: I empower students to take ownership of their learning by giving them opportunites to collaborate with peers and share their learning in safe, postive learning environment. #3rdchat@JuliePJones
A8: Empowerment for learning can come from student voice and choice. Teaching and modeling the growth mindset can also come into play. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A8: I think giving student choice is a big one. It’s another goal of mine to implement more of. I did give them choice (mainly seating choices), but it made a difference in how their behavior was and staying on task just by simply getting to choose. #3rdChat
Just leaving them wanting more/curious about something so they keep listening. @burgessdave is the master at this! He had us all wondering what was in his pocket for over an hour! 😂#3rdchat
We read & explore current events esp. as it ties to Science and SocSt to keep Ss engaged. Ss change locations for learning, let students use standing desks, yoga balls, etc. to keep focus. Take brain breaks. #3rdchat
No, but I have met Ron Clark and heard him speak. I'm hoping to go to Ron Clark Academy in the fall. My principal is selecting 4-5 staff members to go. *Fingers crossed #3rdchat
