Please join us for a weekly conversation about design thinking in K12 education. We will have a variety of moderators with a wide range and depth of design thinking experiences. Each week, we will connect the dots to the design thinking methodology and how it can and will play a bigger role in today’s K12 educational arena.
Hey all I'm Rusty from High Tech High; joining from #sxswedu BUT holed up in my room on account of some kind of sickness from someone at this conference!
Tarah from Chicagoland here in #ATX at the live #dtk12chat - it's warmer here than back home, and I've learned that I am not alone in feeling that #medialiteracy needs to be on the table in our edu-convos
Wait. Lisa. I think you and I talked to Roy at the @HSRA_MN presentation. Was that you? If it were, I am so sorry I didn’t get to say hi properly! Roy was just so fantastic that I lost all sense of time. #dtk12chat#SXSWEDU
Joining from Calgary! We had a foot of snow over the weekend and now it's warming up and all melting, so it's wet! I leaned that I'm good under a deadline! #dtk12chat
Ben from AZ, via OH-IO. Weather is beautiful, and this week has been all about LISTENING to the stories and experiences and thinking about pushing empathy to a systemic level.
Here at the table - excited to be here! #dtk12chat#sxswedu
A1: DT builds community by giving everyone a voice, it takes fiber in your school/org when used at all levels and creates opportunities to have a learning community focused on innovation. #dtk12chat
A0: Dan Ryder, raining ideas, I uncovered super rad ways to use RPG storytelling to depeen content knowledge! #SXSWedu#dtk12chat#designthinking LIVE from the Hilton lobby!
Important to use design thinking to tackle problems across your school/district/... when we use any process across settings, it models importance and helps us practice and get better - trying to look at how to use in my tech dept #dtk12chat
A1 we can use #designthinking to create innovative communities by asking Ss what problems important to them that they want to solve. When learners have skin in the game we increase buy in #dtk12chat
Howdy y’all! Wishing I was there with everyone @SXSWEDU In NYC with a pleasant Nor’easter hitting. Impact not nearly as bad as predicted thankfully! #dtk12chat
A2 Games require taking on new perspectives - of characters, on situations - and working creatively within constraints to solve challenges. Reqs T to be vulnerable and collaborate to achieve goals #dtk12chat#sxswedu
A2) Game design is such a great opportunity for considering other perspectives! #rpgsxsw was awesome. Building a game world through different lenses of archetypal characters. #sxswedu#dtk12chat
A1: DT helps finds unique solutions to users needs; great place to start is right at home in own classroom; nothing helps sustain learning & energy like feeling as if you played a part in helping other #dtk12chat
A1: Educators could talk with lots of different roles - esp beyond EDU. We could listen, listen to needs across sectors, demographics. And could keep pushing to get out of the systems/boxes we tend to stay in, even when we think we’re innovating. GO BIGGER! #sxswedu#dtk12chat
Howdy y’all! Wishing I was there with everyone @SXSWEDU In NYC with a pleasant Nor’easter hitting. Impact not nearly as bad as predicted thankfully! #dtk12chat
Have you tried @extraordinaires ? We played during a professional learning day with teachers. Builds empathy for characters in the game and infuses #makered . #dtk12chat
A2 empathy is built in a collaborative atmosphere. Today @jacquiegardy and I went to the @stanforddschool Design Bus to do their #escapechallenge and it was really focused more on learning how we collaborate together and how that leads to success. #dtk12chat
So what a lot of people may not realize? The State Dept has an amazing content developer for their learning commons & there are tons of ways educators can benefit; connect w @jacquiegardy#dtk12chat#designthinking#sschat#edchat#rcus
A2: great simulation game we’ve done is the poverty spiral simulation - empathy building and helps us understand our communities we serve better. We also have a game design start-up @HFAEDGE that works with Ts and Ss to design games #dtk12chat
Hey Folks!
Asad here. Here in Austin Live with everyone else. I'm amazed how many people are talking about UN Sustainability goals during the #SXSWEDU sessions #dtk12chat

A2) 2 key aspects to game design, enough failure to keep it interesting, and a hook that makes what to spend their time. Hmw incorporate failure as an opportunity #dtk12chat
I find that especially in focused area (such as tech) - been really thinking about how to use #DesignThinking to work through what problems staff have so my team can better serve. Time to put into action! #dtk12chat

I've seen some amazing culturally-driven games, especially from indigenous game designers... Had to go hunt down this URL: https://t.co/jrEnVujuoS#dtk12chat#sxswedu
A3: The number one thing that has changed my entire attitude about education has been fostering relationships with my students. I love school, they love school. I work hard, they work hard. We are a team and that’s where our learning thrives as a class. #dtk12chat
What I love about DT is the focus on discovering the problem. Observe, listen, interviews... these tools help us dig into what is happening so the solution is lasting. This approach takes practice and comfort. #dtk12chat

Thinking about a students journey here. If we were to build a journey map through a students day/week in your class, what are the touch points/experiences where we could build positive relationships? What would that require doing differently? #dtk12chat#sxswedu
A3 If RELATIONSHIPS were #1 Priority in every class then we would have wide spread revolution on our hands. We would not have pockets of kids standing up, but entire generations would stand TOGETHER, FOR eachother. Our communities would be rich in discourse & not hate. #dtk12chat
A3 mmm...good question, @mpowers3. As I have learned more about design protocol, I’m figuring out that really knowing your people is critical to the process. Perhaps if this was #1, we’d have a million innovative classrooms #dtk12chat
A3 This reminds me of a session I attended today at #sxswedu about strong and weak-tie relationships. There is so much strength in work-place related PLNs and I want our students to experience this mentorship that exists beyond the school walls #dtk12chat
A3. Honestly, we'd probably get a lot less content covered. We'd need to be very smart about emphasizing only the essential outcomes that connected most strongly with who our students are and our relationships with one another. #dtk12chat
In reply to
@TarahTesmer, @jacquiegardy, @stanforddschool
I know! I am not sure why I assumed digital. I think that often analogue is better for games--it's more about the content & less about the tech #dtk12chat
A3 It would look like de-standardization, love, fun, failed experiments and an invisible force field around the tribe - permeable to the world but protective of the members #dtk12chat#sxswedu
A3: It looks like Ss leading community change initiatives across the region like our Ss presenting their criminal justice system re-birth projects. #dtk12chat#sxswedu
A3) A priority focus on relationships in our classrooms would create a greater network of support for all our students. Students supporting students is powerful. #dtk12chat
I would love to learn more about systems design and puzzle over how that might apply to design thinking in schools. Plenty of systems there! #dtk12chat
A3)If relationships were the focus in schools, kids would feel loved, would feel they could share their worries, lots of collaboration among faculty, too. I genuinely feel building stronger school relationships is the actual solution to gun violence, bans or not. #dtk12chat

#SXSWEDU#dtk12chat Biggest challenge in design thinking: kids need to know how to make something if they are going to gain insight from testing. That's why #designthinking and the maker movement are so closely married.
a3 it could lead to classrooms that provide students with more social and emotional support. teachers not plowing through content but more focused on student interest #dtk12chat
A3) from the outside in. . . T greeting Ss at the door, T moving throughout the class, engaging each S in a personal way. I joke with those that respond to jokes, give light touches on shoulders to others, & some nonverbal ques #dtk12chat
A3 @responsiveclass is such a strong way to make the focus of our classrooms all about relationships and how we work together as a community. Love infusing morning meetings and class meetings into our weekly routines #dtk12chat

A4 Not so much about the "new" but moreso giving all students K-8 that we serve ways to document and reflect their process. More intentional on where the kids are in their learning in a medium that speaks to them in that grade band #dtk12chat
#dtk12chat#sxswedu Systems design is all about identifying constraints, fixing them, then identifying the next constraint. Iteration like that is the lifeblood of #designthinking
A4 Students are designing space colonies on Google Sketchup - new wrinkle: we're partnering with a local AR/VR startup to port those models into Unity and get them into the startup's platform for fun multi-user interactive experiences WITH the models S built #dtk12chat#sxswedu

a4 Haven't done it yet, but I'm pretty excited to buy a MIDI board and have sts write and produce music, esp around social justice topics like what was heard at the conference #HMW bring awareness through music? #dtk12chat
I have a class of grade 7s who are finding social relationships tricky right now. I need to design some learning tasks that will help them work on this. #dtk12chat
Absolutely so closely married! DT requires building things that can work. Maker skills need willingness to fail and iterate. Like peanut butter and jelly! #dtk12chat#makered
A3. Relationships are all that matter. If everyone was truly connecting, school would a place of joyful learning and meaningful celebrations... everyday! #dtk12chat#sxswedu
reminds me of 'true' cooperative learning, where tasks are designed in a way that group can't succeed unless all parts come together & others can't take over someone else's role #dtk12chat

A4: We use #edtech to enhance the way we deliver content but what about using it to enhance students’s curiosity and more so reflection on what they have learned or want to implement? Easy to forget how necessary reflection is during the learning process #dtk12chat
A4) not so much new, but Parkland has refocused my attention to Twitter and YouTube as social platforms for As voice, particularly the voice of young women, and minority young men--> amplify their voice #dtk12chat
A4: were designing virtual reality immersive stories at our internship sites with @IRLLABS so Ss can see different career options because you can’t be what you can’t see. #dtk12chat#sxswedu
I've used it with teachers (had some sets when I worked at district office but no more now!). Great conversation opener. Awesome to practice the mindsets. You can have 4-5 people use one set at a time. #dtk12chat

Maybe e midi a needless interface: kids can record directly from the instrument, or simulate one directly in Garageband or whatever. And with computer skills, kids no longer need (piano) keyboard skills. Someone who has never played can now compose! #dtk12chat#SXSWEDU

A4: Last night I met @reefcares at the @RWScholars event - Going to use their VR for Human Trafficking for some deeper PD for our TEACHERS - especially those newer to DT - to experience STORY in a powerful way. #Empathy baby! Adult learning is important learning! #dtk12chat#PBL

A4) New way of using #edtech in DT? Really, I've moved farther and farther from using tech when doing DT, unless it's tech the kids bring in as part of their solutions. #dtk12chat
💯 And thinking of @zephoria keynote this morning, these platforms have SO MUCH influence on how Ss come to learn about and learn through the world. There’s an imperative for empathy and iteration here somewhere... #sxswedu#dtk12chat

A5 Kill the "reform" movement that obsesses over standardized tests, teacher accountability & pedagogy of poverty for students who need liberatory design MOST. Trust teachers. Trust PUBLIC schools. Trust kids. Electives, soft skilling, networking for kids #sxswedu#dtk12chat
#dtk12chat#SXSWEDU Similar situation on the empathy side of things: if kids need to empathize as part of #designthinking process, they need to know some basic content first. Skills-based learning is the future, but some content is essential to giving those skills a foundation.
A4. I approach writing as a design thinking process. I just started Instagram artists as mentor texts for my students to learn how they might tell a compelling story. #dtk12chat
Adobe session today said Ts say they can't do creative prob solving because of lack of tech access. Wrong answer! Creative prob solving does NOT need tech #dtk12chat

I just popped in… We are on night 3 of toddler bed transition… Bambino is taking it well, like a bambino so i’m currently in my 30/45 min window of waiting him out… #dtk12chat I will try to go back to catch up Thanks 4 looking for me Maggie!

A5) Dthinking in schools require Ss to have self-efficacy, not every Ss comes to school with that in their bag, need to focus on creating a space where Ss believe their efforts have purpose and where failure = good #dtk12chat

Hi #dtk12chat! I'm Gail from the Bay Area, where there was beautiful sunny weather today! (maybe rain tonight) Today I've learned a lot about a) my students' great response to me being honest with them that we need to try something new and b) grading philosophies!
A5: what about creating mentorship days to expose students to different types of design thinking? Students can learn first hand from experts. Would have to be a school wife initiative though 😬#dtk12chat
A5: I’m hoping there will be more & more open source #DT resources available so that teachers & administrators(like me) can share them in PD at all kinds of schools #dtk12chat
a5 Teachers have to create entry points based upon their comfort zone. Different schools have different mandates, so finding those points and people to support is key #dtk12chat

We used an Instagram poet today and used an aesthetic awareness protocol to Notice, Question, and then embody. Their poems were incredible! #dtk12chat#sxswedu
A5. There was a good session today on promoting design thinking as pedagogy responsive to neurodiversity, which I think might be a good way into more schools. #dtk12chat

Being willing to let people start in baby steps is important... Too many organizations saying partial isn't good enough... I can't think of a bigger turn-off to trying something new than telling the person that they better do it right or else. #sxswedu#dtk12chat
A5. There was a good session today on promoting design thinking as pedagogy responsive to neurodiversity, which I think might be a good way into more schools. #dtk12chat
A5: scaffold, design WITH vs FOR, choose challenges and projects that are relevant and therefore engaging. Challenge students to become their best selves and aspire to reach the sky! ALL students can achieve. #dtk12chat
A5. This approach to learning is still pretty new. I think we need to keep doing THIS - talking about it, pondering it, making it public - so more teachers get to hear about it. #dtk12chat#sxswedu
A5) Dthinking in schools require Ss to have self-efficacy, not every Ss comes to school with that in their bag, need to focus on creating a space where Ss believe their efforts have purpose and where failure = good #dtk12chat
What are some of your favorite ways to combine #designthinking with learning theory and/or pedagogy? What about Design Thinking makes it such a good fit for EDU from a learning science perspective? #dtk12chat#sxswedu
A5: I have been told by visitors from “affluent” schools that we had a “moral imperative” to transform & develop DT as #Pedagogy. There is only ONE moral imperative - DO THE RIGHT THING 4 ALL kids. DT, for us, is critical creativity, engagement & skills needed 4 future #dtk12chat
B/c DT is student-centered, it focuses teaching on responding to the unique needs of each student. This tends to jive well with special education, as it removes the false problem of "this child with learning challenges doesn't fit into the system" #dtk12chat
A5 involve business/organizations to provide gifts of value while mentoring/coaching up teachers & students using PBL & DT! Business advisory teams rock #dtk12chat
A5. Teachers need to introduced to design thinking in a non threatening way. They need to see results. Why are some teachers so resistant to new techniques??? #dtk12chat
@julieschell was talking about this yesterday in her #sxswedu session. For me, it's an especially good fit bc you have high relevance/engagement, S always operating in zone of proximal development, requires iteration & spiraling/layering of learning... all v important #dtk12chat
Yes. Though I think I'm always living the mindsets, the DT process isn't always appropriate. I don't use it all the time. Neither should anyone.
A5: High quality PD for teachers (not 1 & done); experiences to show how DT fits into curriculum and not an extra; time to try, time to share and ask for help and try again #dtk12chat
A6: Our Ts are starting to question if we need shift to narrative report cards to better document competency based learning instead of standards check off #dtk12chat
A5: Celebrating teachers using DT in their classroom and providing them opportunities to reflect with colleages will help promote this learning for all students. #dtk12chat
The strongest connections with pedagogy for me are cycles of interation being connected to growth mindset, opportunities for revising ideas, cycles of learning (and teaching!), etc.; and authenticity, providing real-world processes and contexts. #dtk12chat
Because most new things are presented in a threatening way! Many of our school settings are too competitive, zero-sum, risk-averse, etc, for people to safely try things and be okay to mess up. #dtk12chat
A6: Our Ts are starting to question if we need shift to narrative report cards to better document competency based learning instead of standards check off #dtk12chat
Yeah that was such a good session. For me, it’s that we’re pushing folks toward abductive, imaginative forms of thinking/reasoning, and engaging them in literal meaning-making! 🛠🧠 #sxswedu#dtk12chat
A6 Design thinking is an excellent way to show competencies - REAL skills applied to REAL problems. Mastery transcripts & #CBL care about what you have DONE and worksheets & scantrons don't count. S build portfolios of real work examples! #dtk12chat#sxswedu

Oh I'd love to hear more about that! My school has had narrative reports as long as I've been there (11 years) and we just added skills checklists a couple years ago. #dtk12chat
Not sure yet - visited Nueva and saw theirs.Think it's a few years out still, but may have few Ts willing to plunge in. We're K-6 which makes it easier than 7-12 #dtk12chat
#SXSWEDU is amazing for great sessions, Keynotes & experiences. BUT LEARN the most, gain the most & seek the most? From human connections, relationships, push to see differently & challenge assumptions. Many of most important faces in progressive EDU are here. Now. #dtk12chat

A6: YES, and: add that students can incorporate versions/drafts of messy, imperfect, iterative work. They get the chance to reflect on their own progress/growth, and they get to develop and articulate a sense of accomplishment. #sxswedu#dtk12chat

A6) Dthinking = bias towards action. Breaking problems into parts is how we get Ss to build projects worth putting on transcripts and worth sparking their imagination
#dtk12chat
What the hell "moral imperative" ? Yes, all that's imperative is that we do the right thing by kids. DT is not *required* to serve kids. Relationships are. #dtk12chat
When this happens to students the feedback loop is cutoff. The same thing happens to Ts. We all need to be given grace to grow and some grow at different times. Give grace and see growth. #dtk12chat

At least the Nueva teachers I've talked to talked about how long it takes to do the narratives (not that it makes it bad but harder to convince teachers to change) #dtk12chat
#dtk12chat and many things are proposed as an add on or an additional thing or "flavor of the month" , not "our focus is growth" and "when we know better, we do better"

There's a ton of this kind of cultural content coming out right now, especially empathy-driven video games. It's a really amazing new niche. Would be a good thing to curate some resources for, actually... #dtk12chat
Teachers Going Gradeless has a pretty good conversation happening in the Facebook group, too. People at all sorts of different places from only letter grades to full narrative reports. #dtk12chat
Love it! Just sketched out a 12 week tech ed class proposal using DT and making; rather than everyone making same catapult, what if everyone learned tech/making skills to build their prototype #dtk12chat

So yeaaaaaaah. When adults work through some iteration/prototyping/testing, they’re prepared to be deflated when then they reach a reflection point and things aren’t AMAZING. Transforming behaviors and cultures is going to be the long-term piece to this, IMO. #dtk12chat#sxswedu

I love this! As we’ve rethought and reconfigured classrooms, I feel like a quiet space is sometimes missing. When a quiet room is present there are always some kids in there working! #dtk12chat
A7 I would design a series of "quiet cells" w/ walls & sound damping for individual students to use when they need a personal space for deep thinking, de-sensory overloading, introverted battery charging, etc. Saw something @JJohnsonCCHS school that I liked! #dtk12chat#sxswedu
