If you have 30 more minutes, please join me NOW for a short #peekachat where we're discussing the ways we teach KINDNESS to our students! Thanks!

Hi #Peekachat family! Akilah, from VBCPS, Professional Learning Specialist. I facilitate #joyful learning experiences for the adults that serve our Ss. #VBHasJoy#KindnessMatters
A1: Did you know: Studies show that Ss who experience kindness (as both giver and receiver) develop more positive relationships w/ other Ss & Ts , and are more likely to be happier and achieve greater success academically (Exline, J. et al., 2012) #Peekachat
I'm Paul Solarz, a 5th grade teacher from Arlington Heights, Illinois. My 5th graders are working one-on-one with a kindergarten classroom to bring Social-Emotional skills into the classroom. We focused on KINDNESS a few weeks ago & went very well! #peekachat
A1: Often many of our teachers love using storybooks to highlight the importance of Kindness. In our original story on kindness, our character Kenji learns the power of not only being kind to other, but from also receiving kind gestures from his friends. #peekachat
A1: We have our school’s Essential 12 and Kindness if one of them, that we practice everyday. I also have Ss participate in RACK - Random Acts of Christmas Kindness. #Peekachat
A1 The importance of kindness begins on day one in how you welcome students. Morning Meeting is an important daily venue to set expectations, model, and practice behavior. Eating lunch with Ss helps too. #peekachat
Broad simplicity is good when it comes to expectations. We have three:
Take care of yourself
Take care of others
Take care of the environment.
#peekachat
A1. Developing an atmosphere where kindness is appropriately modeled is essential. Fostering relationships with Ss to show genuine interest in the things they are interested in makes a huge difference. "Kindness gives birth to kindness..." #peekachat
A1. Open honest conversations with Ss as well as modeling situations and addressing missed opportunities to show kindness. However I truly believe we as adults have a lot to learn FROM Ss about kindness! #Peekachat
A1. Kindness modelled as soon as Ss come into the room. Smiling, Welcoming them in, listening to them share their stories, Helping others in clrm. #peekachat
So do I. We are finishing up the Book Wonder on Friday and I’m showing this video from 20/20 about a real-life Wonder boy - https://t.co/9l7C3i60j0#Peekachat
A1 Collaborating w our wellness team to talk about friendship, kindness & empathy. Bldg connection through lit. Mentor texts (Invisible Boy/Market St/Save Me A Seat) & lit books (Ms. Bixby's Last Day, One & Only Ivan, & Bridge to Terabithia) guide our conversations. #peekachat
A2. Our character ed. program allots for two new ambassadors of character per grade level to be elected each MP. It's a great motivator for students to be leaders in kindness and character! #Peekachat
A2: #Peekachat I model it, reinforce it and do #kind acts, use #kind words around them so they see it in action. We (educators) have to be the change we wish to see, right?😊#VBHasJoy#KindnessMatters
A1 modeling as much as I can and having teachable moments when they arise, we are also reading Wonder for our afternoon meeting and spend time reflecting on how we treated each other that day, reflecting on what we did that was good or what we can do differently #Peekachat
A1: Did you know: Studies show that Ss who experience kindness (as both giver and receiver) develop more positive relationships w/ other Ss & Ts , and are more likely to be happier and achieve greater success academically (Exline, J. et al., 2012) #Peekachat
A2.My middle school digital media Ss were challenged to create an original image/poster to hang around campus to encourage kindness. Inspired by "Wonder" I was impressed with their work.We focused on black and white images with pops of color. #digitalmedia#peekachat#kindness
A2. We model and demonstrate acts of kindness in clrm. Ss sometimes need to understand and feel empathy how others feel towards actions directed at them. Spreading kindness by helping others, complimenting others. #peekachat
A3: We LOVE storybooks on kindness! On our site we have a number of recommendations in the unit over, including:
The Lion and the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney
https://t.co/qfJcLahebB#Peekachat
They really amazed me too! #StuVoice is such a big part of getting the message to be heard loud and clear. If it's always adults preaching to be kind, the meaning is sometimes lost. This was in their words and their images... #peekachat
It is a combination of learning specialists, nurse, guidance, social worker, and adm. Not only do they work to alleviate immediate crisis they connect with classrooms to reinforce healthy habits of mind. #peekachat
A2) setting the stage of positivity as the norm in my classroomof 6th & 7th graders and they began to expect it and get offended if others are mean. #peekachat
A2 our school is learning about the pillars of character and each month sts learn a new pillar, students are work hard to demonstrate what they learned. #peekachat
A3 - The kindergartners seem to really enjoy the @Peekapak books we read to them each month. We're focusing on #Empathy this Friday & look forward to reading Ines' story! We plan to connect it with what we learned from Wonder & do a bunch of the @Peekapak activities! #peekachat
A2: I collab w/Ts who use their “no break days” to dive deeper into kindness themed lessons. Last year Ss completed kindness passion projects then showcased at our Kindness Share Fair: https://t.co/CNUG0UAeJY#peekachat#edchat
A3. Mr. Peabody's Apples by Madonna is a great read aloud about the impact of your words and actions. (We also experimented by being kind/unkind to two apples to see the effect) #Peekachat
A3. My two favorites of all time. Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes and Wonder. I start EVERY SINGLE YEAR with Chrysanthemum. <3 I do the "wrinkled hearts are hard to fix" activity. #peekachat
A3:
Enemy Pie by Derek Munson. ...
Ordinary Mary's Extraordinary Deed by Emily Pearson and Fumi Kosaka. ...
The Invisible Boy by Trudy Ludwig. ...
The Three Questions by Jon J Muth. ...
Rude Cakes by Rowboat Watkins. ...
The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

Q4: What kinds of activities or lessons have you done to help students demonstrate kindness outside of the classroom? In the community or around the world? #Peekachat
We used Apple Pages. We were working with using the instant alpha feature with a color overlay. It was the week we talked about picture saturation. :) Worked out awesome! #peekachat
A4: We created a website to showcase our journey as we learned about kindness and created Kindness Passion Projects for others in our community: https://t.co/KZB8a7T54F#peekachat
Q4: What kinds of activities or lessons have you done to help students demonstrate kindness outside of the classroom? In the community or around the world? #Peekachat
A4. We did a giving project for #Giving Tuesday where we made Christmas ornaments and some cards and the Ss could hand them out to people and friends for kindness. #peekachat
A4: We also collected coins for #kindcoins inspired by @BarbaraGruener’s student and his video of the hurricane destruction on his school/community #peekachat
A4 - A while back, my students worked together to create a website where all of the parents in our school could put their products/services & others could go there to get discounts - helped struggling businesses bloom! https://t.co/JOfjILCe4F (Check out their video!)

This is great! Growing up, at my highschool we used to collect toiletry supplies to donate to the local Women's Shelter. It was such a small deed that added up and the center appreciated it so much. #Peekachat
