Good evening ers! Glad you could join us! Please tell us who you are, what you do, and where you are located.
-
Good evening. Reed, HS AP from Charlottesville. Looking forward to tonight on educ as digital citizens
-
-
Evening Chris, glad to have you.
-
Looking a little light tonight, but hopefully more folks will join us. Q1 coming right up.
-
Kirk joining here from the Chicago Northshore. Teacher of 6-8th grade double accelerated math in a flipped classroom.
-
Pleased to have you, thanks for joining us.
-
Thanks for joining us. Sounds like you're doing some great things
-
-
Q1: Do you have more than 1 Twitter account? Why or why not?
-
Hello! Sharlene from Maine here UNE student major marine affairs and a minor in education
-
thanks Phil missed last week had to get one in this week
-
-
Nice to have a younger (Future) Educator!
-
A1: I have two twitter accounts. One is my personal account and then I have this one I created for a edu class.
-
A1: I only have one account for professional use. I see no need for Twitter for my personal life.
-
Just one. I don't say anything on twitter that I wouldn't want anyone else to see
-
thank you! Moving the the Norfolk area soon and will be in search for a marine education job
-
A1 Yes I have two. One as a professional tool geared towards education and one personal one.
Helps keep things separate.
-
A1: I have one account as I keep 1 thing in mind, Would Mom be upset with what I posted. Also, if this ended up in the newspaper...
-
is it one you use for class?
-
David. ITRT for VA DJJ arriving late for
-
Hi! Megan, Social Studies, sorry I am late!
-
Q2: Are there any topics you avoid talking about on Twitter or other Social Media?
-
-
A1. I have 1 account because I started using it for Ed shortly after I started using Twitter. No reason for another account yet..
-
No late pass needed here!
-
A1: just 1, I try to make sure all of my tweets could be stood by in person.
-
Ss are not in tune with twitter. Very few even follow it. If more did I would increase Ss focused content
-
A1 - I have 2.... One for me and one for our department to show the great things going on.
-
Do you think High School students would be more in tune with Twitter.
-
A2. I avoid politics, rarely talk religion. I stick to Ed, medical stuff, & the very occasional personal/family tweet.
-
A2: I use the same guidance as mentioned before. If MOM saw it...
I also treat it as though it will be around forever!
-
A PD type Twitter, I like it!
-
A2: I only talk about my class or professional topics on twitter.
-
I dont use my twitter much. Its new for me. I think on my professional one I would only post marine science and edu sources
-
-
A2: I don't post anything that my grandma wouldn't approve of. Same advise I give my Ss.
-
A2: There aren't many things I won't discuss. I figure I have to model no matter what the topic.
-
maybe but it seems like educators have picked it up for Professional communication. That's my main use at this point.
-
Great Twitter session by at Va "If you aren't telling your school/class story.... Who is?"
-
My philosophy too... If I would be embarrassed by my mom seeing it, don't type it! Of course she curses more than I do!!
-
A2: I really don't put much personal stuff up on twitter. Also tend to avoid political banter.
-
-
agree. I don't want to be a teacher machine that is a perfect human, but I also want to show positive use of www.
-
A2 -- pretty open... Best way to model digital citizenship
-
We did a Twitter chat a few years back about Branding your school... Hugely important.
-
OH yes, my daughters too.
-
I am quite willing to discuss politics and religion, I feel real discourse is important to progress.
-
-
We better recognize that as Ts and Admins we need to be familiar with all of these apps trends shift
-
Great point! My high schooler wishes her SS teachers would talk more current events.
-
Q3: Does your county have any guidelines for having students as “friends” on social media?
-
I took until last year to get on Twitter and the PD available here. I don't want to get left behind again!
-
Tough to do... so fast they move from one to another!!!
-
A3: Our district encourages us to use social media to interact and connect with students and parents to share our classroom.
-
A3: The problem when schools/districts limit S-T interaction is that it limits dedicated teachers. (1/2)
-
A3: Teachers who are going to abuse SM or use it inappropriately are going to do it regardless of the rules (2/2)
-
I've seen my daughters type and take pictures like lightning, good luck with that!
-
I will talk politics and religion in person and all. Twitter seems like a hard place to do so well.
-
Wow, that is fairly progressive. Many school systems discourage or forbid it.
-
A3: I do not.Twitter I don't mind If Ss follow me that is different to me than FB friends. All communication must be public though
-
A3. I work in juvenile corrections-so we have weird rules. I can tweet on behalf of Ss for Ed purposes anonymously. (1/2)
-
Our students will see others unafraid too... so why not us? Modeling what is appropriate.
-
Policies and decisions should be made with the best teachers in mind.
-
A3: We are encouraged to use, I wouldn't say encouraged to be friends with. But I love 's perspective on that.
-
I have my security settings way different on Facebook. I don't friend students there.
-
A3 2/2 I can't be friends w/inmates after release for a certain time period. Have to report interactions longer than hi, how u doin?
-
I'll consider this. I may change my policy. No promises. :)
-
Agree, whole different environment there.
-
-
Yes, they definitely do get credit. They encourage us to have Instagram, Twitter or Facebook with Ss and parents.
-
-
And that's a change. Wasn't that way for a long period of time. Exact opposite actually
-
On Facebook I am friends with Ss of over 10yrs ago. They are older than when I was their T. Diff story
-
Q4: What is the biggest advantage/disadvantage for educators to use social media?
-
do you set "office hours" or appropriate times for communication?
-
-
I only have Instagram with Ps and Ss so they don't do more than "like" a post.
-
-
A4. Advantages: Connections w/educators, personalized PD, ideas, reflection, etc.
-
the connections I've made. My class met today via only b/c I met her on Twitter!
-
A4 -- PD has been the biggest advantage. Followed by sharing what is going on in your ed. world with other Ts in building.
-
A4 disadvantages: If you don't know how to behave online-you could be out if a job!!!
-
A4: one advantage is to be able to share the pitfalls of social media with Ss, Also the ideas and discussions are very helpful.
-
A4: disadvantages are minimal if used wisely and appropriately. IMO
-
If students/parents need to message me or contact me it's almost always by email.
-
A4 My Ss LOVED it when I brought Twitter into the classroom. I am helping other Ts to do the same.
-
A4: quick communication w/Ss, PD, Ss can know me better. Advantages.
-
A4: Biggest advantage - connected with the world and gaining insight with fellow educators. Disadvantage - fine line to walk
-
awesome, what types of things do you do?
-
A4: no real disadvantage.
-
A4:I have observed Ts really post some horribly inappropriate stuff... I have also observed Ts reaching out to Ts
-
Really flattens out the ability to communicate with others.
-
we have had discussions about juvenile justice in USA and feelings in being locked up w/free Ss in Norway.
-
I have seen it also, file it under the "what were you thinking" category..Unbelievable stories
-
Q5: What advice would you give to educators new to Social Media like Twitter?
-
A5: Don't be stupid. If you wouldn't post it for your grandmother to see, don't post it.
-
A5. Always assume your boss is reading everything you write!
-
wow, what a great use of this tool. Global communication!!!
-
-
A5: Find a PD hashtag that you love. Let Ss follow you. Use an avi(not the egg). Follow people that inspire you.
-
Yes, don't be stupid. I like it.
-
A5: I would like to hear what educators have to say about using it since I am not a educator yet!
-
A5: Use it! You don't have to know everything, use the other experts on Twitter for help.
-
A5: Lurk for a while, then jump in and join the conversation.
-
when I get a new T on Twitter I always have them put a pic, even just a random pic from their hard drive.
-
A5: Also, you will get used to it! Keep trying. I know it's strange at first, but it is actually fun.
-
Anything you would say to college students about future careers and social media.
-
No eggs is a good place to start
-
-
simple but really makes w difference.
-
A5. I also encourage them to start on smaller chats before they join the ones that move too fast to read!!
-
I would say use it! It is scary at first for sure, but not using it is hurting more than helping!
-
Q6: What would you do if attacked (Cyber-bullied) on Twitter or other Social Media accounts?
-
where do you see district policies going with social media interactions between Ts and Ss
-
Was it meant to ice everyone or an appropriate comment.
-
A6: for Ss I would say, document the interaction and "Tell Someone"
-
I predict they will stay mixed depending upon the Superintendent and the community standards.
-
A6. Ha! That depends on how/what the attack is. I've been known to argue pointlessly w/attackers. I have learned to block & move on.
-
A6: Don't let it go unnoticed. Schools should teach other students to be good at
-
Any resources out there for Mary? https://t.co/pKjJzRiAHY
-
-
Anyone willing to share successful MTSS strategies for the high school level?
-
A6: Hopefully I would respond like an adult and remember that I can walk away from the computer! Keyboard warriors...
-
A6. I've been much better about ignoring in the past 6 years. Before that I was more of a hothead.
-
How do we teach our kids this!
-
A6: This happened to me this year. I told admin, involved the police and reported on Twitter. Incident was taken care of swiftly.
-
Last Q of the night coming right up.
-
I have openly admitted to my Ss my past and taught them that I had to move on and that fighting online changes zero.
-
Q7: Are there any topics you wish fellow educators WOULDN’T talk about?
-
Key to model what we want them to know! admit to our own mistakes
-
A7: if you would talk about it in person I think it's fair game. But I am pretty open.
-
I wish they wouldn't bash... no need to be toxic.
-
A7. I don't like negative complaining w/no optimism or solutions. Mutual complaining and working past problems is OK w/me.
-
A7: List includes: In-school business, 'those' kids, 'that' kid, 'my job', 'Spring Break can't come soon enough', etc.
-
