Sunday nights have just been hard. I have been summer twitter chat happy.
David from SF Bay Area, elementary principal
Andrea, 1st grade teacher from Bay Area checking in.
A1: We start on Thurs. and will have back 2 school nite Wed. Oh & there r 2 pokestops on campus. We'll set up lures @ both
Q1 You never get a 2nd chance to make a 1st impression. How do you/your school make a welcoming 1st impression on families?
Hey Alex, K-6 tech teacher in LA, ready to talk about school stuff since there's no more soccer to watch
Just had a nightmare last night that my classroom and students were horrible and everything was going wrong
A1: I listen a lot to what they want to share, what they need, and how I can help. This is the game plan to support office staff!
A1: Every school's environment tells the story. Front office should reflect what is valued and interactions need to be positive!!
Embracing Pokemon Go - interesting :)
Hello, Heather middle school core teacher from SF Bay Area. Making dinner but going to try to multitask and too.
A1My school has a lot of welcoming events for new students-retreats, days of welcome etc. A chance for them know people from start
Yes, we took it district wide this year.
A1: I go to registration, chat with Ps & Ss, be visible in quad on the first day b4 school, break & lunch
A1: We have a back-to-school potluck the Saturday before school starts. Great way for Ss & Ps to meet their new Ts & ease nerves
A1: Plan on sending out postcards to Ss before school starts to welcome them into my class and will be there at registration day.
I plan on doing some kind of icebreaker with this
I've had that dream...always glad to wake up to find out it isn't real!
We did that when we taught K. Made such a difference! https://t.co/4ONMA0Oykv
A1: We have a back-to-school potluck the Saturday before school starts. Great way for Ss & Ps to meet their new Ts & ease nerves
Q1: Food trucks at registration with games for students to play and meet others students
A1 : sent a welcome letter to returning families, outlining enhancements to our program; revamping website too.
A1: solicit partnerships with parents and Community members! Invite your biggest naysayers to spend the afternoon on campus!
Love the food truck idea! https://t.co/kHTO4FmWPS
Q1: Food trucks at registration with games for students to play and meet others students
Open-door 2 Ss & Ps before school started. Come by, say hello, check out the space, etc. Low key, low pressure, casual & real.
A1 It's important to greet at the front door, smile, make eye contact, talk, and LISTEn.
I hope is a good dinner date for you :)
A1 I called each student a few days before school started to introduce myself and learn a little about my students.
A1 We have an orientation, tour and BbQ the week before school starts
A1: Back 2 School nite is super early this yr. Going to encourage my principal to do something different. Not sure what yet.
Stopping by this evening. I teach k in San Diego. What is tonight's topic?
A1: Back to school night and letters home to parents!
A1 My principal had a parent meeting with coffee and pastry the first day, right after drop off.
My old school had the In and Out truck at business day.
John from San Juan Capistrano, Director of EdTech joining late.
So cool!!! Where are you in Bay Area? https://t.co/MK6l5e2oWj
Q1: Food trucks at registration with games for students to play and meet others students
Brilliant! And lucky! Mmmmm!
A1 I explain to them that we are all on the same side and need to work together to be successful https://t.co/ymoeNoRsVm
Q1 You never get a 2nd chance to make a 1st impression. How do you/your school make a welcoming 1st impression on families?
Hello Melissa CJ from Katy TX.
Q1: My little one's school organizes a day at the park the weekend before the start of school
Hey John - glad you could make it tonight!
Christy, elementary principal in Costa Mesa, joining in a few min late.
love the honesty...what would you change to make it more welcoming
This is a great idea! https://t.co/D692B6iZYk
Q1: Food trucks at registration with games for students to play and meet others students
A1 I am no longer in the classroom, but I would phone each of my 3rd grade students the night before school started.
food trucks would be awesome! I love that!
My old neighborhood. I teach now at Mater Dei in Santa Ana.
A1: my district decided that better 1st impressions are made with me in the district office. What are they saying?
That is great - did you get a lot of buy in after that?
We host an formal Meet the Teacher. Helps ease Ts, Ps, and Ss anxiety.
A1: 1st impression are a win, don't slouch for the 2nd & 3rd. Greet w/ a smile and the key is to (try) remember everyone's name.
A1: That reminds me- we also have coffee for Ps in the FRC once school starts on Day 1 https://t.co/MwibQUy3aB
A1 My principal had a parent meeting with coffee and pastry the first day, right after drop off.
A1: Ps walk Ss to class first day. My 1st grade team has Ps stay 4 about 20min to meet the T & get info.
I’m not too far from you at Segerstrom HS in SA.
A1 my school for last 2 years has tried welcoming activities but have had few Ps show up, we need big changes
Watch for Q2 coming soon -------->
Love the positive outreach right from the start!
A1: there is going to be an ice cream social the first week of school
My sister-in-law's son went there.
A1: kinder playdates, teacher meet and greet, & trying something new this year with new parent orientation mtgs.
A positive school culture. Clean, inviting, respectful. Smile, listen, and greet them with open arms. https://t.co/YhzTHjVNMG
Q1 You never get a 2nd chance to make a 1st impression. How do you/your school make a welcoming 1st impression on families?
Yes, began to build that family-teacher partnership right at the beginning
A1- I try to let them know my personality asap. Keep it light and welcoming...develop relationships day 1
Everyone loves ice cream - especially if the temps stay up! t
Is it a structured time with Ps? Are they sitting w/their Ss? I teach 1st too. ;)
Q2 Studies show that 46% of Ss live in the home with both parents. How do you work w/split families to benefit Ss?
My daughter is in 4th grade this year - no calls home yet. I guess that is good and bad right?!
We found that if the parent welcoming activity was right after drop off, more parents hung around for a few minutes
IHave an app w/ the sound of rain. recorded his voice in whispers so I hear the filthiest things.
Q2 Studies show that 46% of Ss live in the home with both parents. How do you work w/split families to benefit Ss?
Connections over content - best way to start the year!
Communicate right from the start. Get to know both parents and the situation.
Checking in so late… Chris from SoCal. APUSH & AVID. Finally back w/ a working computer & not on vacation.
Depressing stat...but true :( https://t.co/KT6O3Gwj5Z
Q2 Studies show that 46% of Ss live in the home with both parents. How do you work w/split families to benefit Ss?
A2: Hard to give a blanket answer when i feel the solution is to take each case individually.
A2: being aware & consider double communication. Never assume the parents are communicating. 2x sets of books..no problem.
I try to make them laugh snd see me as a person. I show them the tone of my room. https://t.co/9IGr8ZK2cd
A1- I try to let them know my personality asap. Keep it light and welcoming...develop relationships day 1
A2: begin with the Ss- find out the logistics from their angle. Then reach out to all Ps/guardians. This is a tricky area.
A2: I've had a Ss w/ 2 homes. Both homes sign up for . I try to send school flyers so both have info.
Q2: We ensure that phone calls and emails go home to both sets of parents.
Which school? I'm at YVE.
Yes sir, I've found the time spent is far from "wasted"
Double the work but twice the payoff hopefully!
Work in an environment w/many single families. I ask to what degree is the other parent involved. Reach out if I can.
A2 I include both parents in all communications. Easier to do with the internet, but still not perfect.
A2: I try to feel out the dynamics, send 2 emails, give extra copies, make sure both are kept in the loop
A2: I send home 2 sets of progress reports/ report cards.
A2: I know many of the families. I often ask in the beg. how they wld like Conf & rprt crds (2gether or sep). Most Ps work 2gether
A2: We must be sensitive to The many definitions of family. Yet another reason to embrace becoming culturally proficient
A2: gr8 Q. Often found families had different needs in this area. Good 2 talk w/them & find out early so S isn't burdened by this
A2 : Ensure communication is being shared w/both parents. We are deploying at to enhance our effort.
but you never know until you ask. Love the approach.
A2: This can be very difficult depending on family dynamics. Trying to keep all info available online, to avoid multiple copies.
Couldn't agree more! The more human we are, the less scared/intimidated they are.
I make sure to have a conversation in person w/ both Ps separately and send indiv emails etc. Welcome both https://t.co/SNNzlrJAtb
Q2 Studies show that 46% of Ss live in the home with both parents. How do you work w/split families to benefit Ss?
Agreed! Not all our single families have 2 sets of parents who are actively involved. https://t.co/QXS2DbCLrm
Work in an environment w/many single families. I ask to what degree is the other parent involved. Reach out if I can.
A2: invite both Ps to communicate via email/ w me
A2 Also be flexible. My daughter was split between 2 homes so I know the other side. The Ss shouldn't be stressed
a2) Knowing S and their story is key. We connect with both where connecting with both helps the student succeed.
A2: Comm. w/ both sets of parents together. Usually through email. Works best when parents are set to co-parent.
Yes, sometimes a P will request sep. conf. and that's fine. We're all in this toghether
You all are so much better than I was in the classroom! I didn't even think about separated/divorced parents :(
Neither wants to feel secondary. Make them feel and be equal.
A2: I really try to remind the parents that we are here for the student despite adult differences and conflict. Team effort.
yeah, I often have to hold two separate P/T conferences-more teamwork would be nice
Many have a network of friend or other family members who help. Welcome all. It takes a village. https://t.co/wsYYugKDYW
Agreed! Not all our single families have 2 sets of parents who are actively involved. https://t.co/QXS2DbCLrm
Work in an environment w/many single families. I ask to what degree is the other parent involved. Reach out if I can.
Yes! So important to stay respectful of all situations and keep the Ss happy and relaxed.
With most online communication tools, it's not that big of a difference anymore.
As long as all parties have the same goal...the S comes first.
If they are online... https://t.co/EFpN1aW1zk
With most online communication tools, it's not that big of a difference anymore.
I've been in meetg where I wish they were sep.
A2:Make it very clear to all the adults that you are first and foremost an advocate for "their" child
I agree the more we know the more we can help the student be successful. https://t.co/Wzu7JpVBc0
a2) Knowing S and their story is key. We connect with both where connecting with both helps the student succeed.
A2- Have to treat both sides like they are the lead. Email, phone, connect with both...more work but, it's only fair.
I always communicated with the Ts from the get-go so they would work with me.
Great advice https://t.co/ey1cFMHzCX
A2:Make it very clear to all the adults that you are first and foremost an advocate for "their" child
Every PD should have embedded/modeled training built in and highlighted.
Q3 right around the corner -------->
Q3 For many Ss of poverty, truancy & HW are not top priority. How do you partner w/ families to help their child be successful?
This is a huge issue at my site. It's very difficult to reach the one's who don't have access.
Good point - but save the tech stuff for Q5 :)
When parents aren’t very communicative with each other, patience is really important.
Q3 For many Ss of poverty, truancy & HW are not top priority. How do you partner w/ families to help their child be successful?
A2: I've also sent home 2 gifts at Christmas. I feel bad that the Ss has to choose which P to give gift.
For those who need, we give them a device to take home for the year
A3: Reaching families re: truancy is an issue, but I'm not sure that HW is or should be.
Oh ya! Fighting and making it very uncomfortable. I insisted on separate after that one. https://t.co/aMrsWuQkjk
I've been in meetg where I wish they were sep.
A3: we have a counseling program in place to help w sit. I'm not really givg HW this year. I make calls home w 2 many ab.
A3: Know who your students biggest supporters are and reach out to them when needed.
Again, something I never even thought about! Although I was secondary so it's a little different
A3- Homework? What is this you speak of?
A3: Meet them where they are. Food, free courses, clothing swaps, what is needed most- provide it w/ partners in community.
A3: Make no assumptions, ask lots of questions before jumping to ANY conclusions
Have u found some strategies that work well? https://t.co/MIKXVPhydn
This is a huge issue at my site. It's very difficult to reach the one's who don't have access.
A3 This is when you need to partner with admin. Fortunately we have an outreach program that helps
A3: be the voice that cares about the child and motivates Ss. Give opportunities for HW to be done with you and with help.
Give Ss a reason to come. Make lessons engaging & relevant. understand that many Families may have a negative experience w/school.
A3 I feel like homework punishes kids for socioeconomic status and keeps things status quo-I don't assign it
No problem - you are obviously a forward thinker!
a3) had a good conversation here with math other day, T say P only use standard way of doing, have we shown P other strategies?
A3: create opportunities like Hw clubs & after school supports. when Ss do show up let them know how happy that makes u.
A3:homework is NOT the hill to die on
A3: really try to communicate how important it is for them to be in class, how much they miss when they are gone
The more I read about HW the less I care abt it. Not really giving it this yr. Making a bingo game. No conseq.
A3: Truancy is about connecting with the family and getting admin involved to see what are the issues and how we can help.
Q3: Home visits help make powerful connections and relationships.
Absolutely. It defuses stress when they are reminded why we are all here. For the child. https://t.co/An8vxWxnAK
A2:Make it very clear to all the adults that you are first and foremost an advocate for "their" child
A3 Had a 'homework club' after school on some days. Rethinking homework this year.
When it comes to HW, I ask Ts, what is the purpose of assigning it? Some have stopped giving HW
I am not a fan of homework. Too many other things for Ss to worry about
A3: Not so worried about HW, but the truancy is an issue. Lots of conversations and work to find a motivator for the whole family.
And how much I miss them when they are gone.
Great point - CCSS math was new to use and is new to parents
Hey It’s Kathy from Upland, checking in late. OMG! It was super busy at Target. 1st day w/Ss is tomorrow! Yay! I get to teach!
I don't give consequences. I still give hw, but I have a NO TEARS HW policy. If it doesn't work for you, don't do it.
A3: I struggle w/ this since a big % of my Ss have Ps that don’t speak English and are hard to get a hold of. Staying late helps
Has anyone done a home visit to a truant student?
A3 Give more time in class/after school for HW and work with families to find solutions for attendance https://t.co/muAQ3tc0RM
Q3 For many Ss of poverty, truancy & HW are not top priority. How do you partner w/ families to help their child be successful?
A3 I also don't believe in punishing Ss for tardiness let them know you are glad they made it! Way more effective.
In today's world of youtube videos we should be able to show them pretty quickly, make it and share it. #
The Community Facilitators do great with this in our zone!
A3: great 2 see so many Ts really asked the "why" around hw.
A3 : We have created scholar intervention initiatives & continue to partner w/family & others to provide various levels of support.
What if class was so awesome that we just didnt give HW, but inspired Ss learning after school?
A3: my "HW" is experiential & optional. It reminds Ps about different experience their child needs. It good for all SES
its MS, so not sure I'd say that about ALL of them, but some ;)
Since we have kids from all over the county, being on time is the main issue. Some even come from LA/RS
A3 Making sure they have a place after school where they can get help. Do not judge but advocate. https://t.co/iUR4YMenuV
Q3 For many Ss of poverty, truancy & HW are not top priority. How do you partner w/ families to help their child be successful?
Q3: Glad to read that some of you are as skeptical about the importance of homework as I am!
that sounds great!! Human connection is key!
A3 bottom line: They need to know that they are more than a number or statistic to us https://t.co/muAQ3tc0RM
Q3 For many Ss of poverty, truancy & HW are not top priority. How do you partner w/ families to help their child be successful?
That would be my goal. Inspire them to read in particular.
A3: I think they need a place, but more-so a person to connect with. One who expects more.
Call home when a truant Ss makes it to school on time for a couple of days in a row https://t.co/VuBPbUMExL
A3: Not so worried about HW, but the truancy is an issue. Lots of conversations and work to find a motivator for the whole family.
I give time in class always for work nay overflow if they do not finish. Very little 4 me. https://t.co/orW5J19wbf
I am not a fan of homework. Too many other things for Ss to worry about
Half way through already, and Q4 is up next -------->
Some of mine have a 1-2 hour commute!
I had them make pine cones dipped in paraffin wax covered in chemical that burned diff colors my first year.
I have come around to that way of thinking as my kids grow up. https://t.co/YPXQQ5B9vT
Q3: Glad to read that some of you are as skeptical about the importance of homework as I am!
Lofty, but amazing and worth it. I hope you have success.
I followed along on one last year. It was interesting. Ss were just sitting at home while Ps were at work
Yep. Very powerful for both the child and parent to see you at their door.
Q4 What are some structures you have in place to promote parent volunteerism in your school/classroom? Secondary in particular?
It's always about the person, not the place. ASP helps, but only w/a worksheet. That's not helpful HW. https://t.co/fPTr4Qtpy5
A3: I think they need a place, but more-so a person to connect with. One who expects more.
Yes, but most effective strategy I've found is asking if something going on at school keeping a kid away https://t.co/jZIda271dc
Has anyone done a home visit to a truant student?
A3- We also have our RTI period 4 days a week now. It should help with these issues.
Never. Not sure how it is handled at our school since we are private.
Great idea! I'm going to try this. I agree with the https://t.co/MURvliu1BY
Call home when a truant Ss makes it to school on time for a couple of days in a row https://t.co/VuBPbUMExL
A3: Not so worried about HW, but the truancy is an issue. Lots of conversations and work to find a motivator for the whole family.
Q4 What are some structures you have in place to promote parent volunteerism in your school/classroom? Secondary in particular?
human connections & relationships are at the core of everything.
Teacher's union may be the place to start with that one though. If you can get buy-in it would be great!
but if it gives a chance for Ss to feel successful and creates a connection, then it is more than HW help.
A4: I wish the district would come to the school and fingerprint. It would make the process more accessible for everyone.
A4: we tried to do PTO, but only had about 5 Ps, in MS is seems to be a lot harder to get Ps involved. Hoping someone has ideas
A4 Totally open door policy in a middle class neighborhood meant I had lots of parents willing to volunteer in various areas
Q4: Day 1 I tell all Ps they're welcome in our room anytime. Survey at BTSN helps determine who can/wants to volunteer in class.
a4) "power of an hour" attempt to get parents who have not had best record with ed in for an hour to see how their child learns.
My slow computer just opened your HW Gdoc - that is awesome! I am going to share with some Ts in my district
A4 I can't think of any... We really need some ideas here
A4: Creating spots where Ps/guardians can bring a hobby or craft they are passionate about and build time for it. May be a Sat.
A4 : is a virtual school. We are creating Parent Lounges expanding field trips & creating Parent Advisory Council!
Awesome! RTI, when done right can change everything for a child
. our staff makes 5 positive phone calls a week in exchange for 20 minutes back on our weekly meeting
Q4: Escondido Union has a full time Family Liaison at every school to promote family engagement. They are awesome at recruiting
A4: parent nights, make opportunities known. Verbally praised parents for their participation. Get them excited with your energy!
I hear you and in a one on one calm, caring tutoring session I would agree, but that's not what I see.
A4 Google form sign-ups at BTS night. Booster club events for several departments. Not a problem at our school.
Bring Ps in as much as possible. challenges good way 2 bring in Ps as users 2 test prototypes
Love this idea. Do many parents take you up on the offer?
Be flexible. For some getting their child to school is all they can do. Again, accept that not everyone can or wants to volunteer.
A4: create Google hangouts (or like) in Eve's w/ Ps sharing ideas for all things EDU- forum for them to learn/share together.
You don't have Ts put out a volunteer sign up sheet at back to school night?
Staff meaning admin or teachers participate too? 5 positive calls a week is realistic & I'm sure powerful.
Q4: Parents sometimes need specific tasks to work on. Don't leave it too open ended.
I send letters home about upcoming labs or activities. 7th gr science. Ps came to dissection & G speakers https://t.co/pgdx78ID4I
Q4 What are some structures you have in place to promote parent volunteerism in your school/classroom? Secondary in particular?
A4: We have a "math cafe" Wed a.m. to teach Ps the math we're learning. Sets them up to be able to come in & help Ss.
A4: Tghis is where tech make our lives easier. There are so many tools at our disposal. Key is to be consistent with few tools
Great point! https://t.co/W7nl8Acmm7
Q4: Parents sometimes need specific tasks to work on. Don't leave it too open ended.
If you want family involvement, food and prizes always help.
A4: I invite Ps during presos
At a school w/volunteers I used to let Ps know the task and weekly/monthly time commitment. Helped a lot! https://t.co/W8t4zhXdCq
Q4: Parents sometimes need specific tasks to work on. Don't leave it too open ended.
Joining late Victoria Bradshaw 1st year MS Principal
staff means every adult on campus, teachers, admin, classified staff
Q4: I've been successful in bringing dads into schools by utilizing a donuts for dads program
A4: I'm fortunate to have a lot of P vol. Ps are very involved. Give me 5 is 1 program. Ask Ps to give 5 hours through the year.
A4: the twitter fast follow. https://t.co/8MIveD9LMS No need for Ps to have twitter, they get text message when account tweets.
about 85 to 90%. It was started before I came. In year 5 this year.
https://t.co/HuHEevVfCM
Love this idea. Do many parents take you up on the offer?
the PTA has 5 members... We can't even get parents to join PTA and yes they're out at back 2 school
A4: we have some family fun nights re:games, rdg, etc
Love this idea. https://t.co/IUnvVTyI9T
. our staff makes 5 positive phone calls a week in exchange for 20 minutes back on our weekly meeting
A4 Monthly coffee meetings with parent volunteers and the remind app. Constant contact for major events. https://t.co/cjkpNCDj8F
Q4 What are some structures you have in place to promote parent volunteerism in your school/classroom? Secondary in particular?
Food is always a crowd pleasure!
As a parent, I can't walkways make y own child's class events. But, we can help w/donations, etc.
That is an awesome idea. i could have definitely used that!
No longer a rookie - now it is just "your own special touch" on :)
and you are correct, it is extremely powerful
Never pressure them. As a P when Ts say"its not mandatory but highly recommended" & send reminders 😒 https://t.co/4NPklEjTso
Be flexible. For some getting their child to school is all they can do. Again, accept that not everyone can or wants to volunteer.
also a dad program called watch dogs.
A4: long ago I wld send home work 4 Ps - some volunteered 2 cut out, staple, etc.
A4: Getting to know Ps & their interests makes a difference. Find out about their passions, then direct them to help school.
Have you heard of Watch D.O.G.S. program? We did at my previous school where I taught.
Q5 Does your school have both high and low tech ways to communicate with families? Please give examples.
A4: I'm thinking of doing digital citizenship training via online tools for Ps/community. Easier to hop on than drive to school.
So many of our parents are alumni-they send their kids to our school because it's tradition. They are way into it
Love it & I love including classified staff too. Classified S are important and can build additional connections.
Q5 Does your school have both high and low tech ways to communicate with families? Please give examples.
A5: is a phone call low tech?
I participate in my kids Watch Dogs program as does great time
I have to be aware that as my child gets older, may not want me to volunteer for field trips, etc. Rather would want to be w/peers
Q5: The high tech ways are easy. It's the low tech, calling families when you are at home making dinner, that is tough.
A5: tech: mass emails, phone calls, social media!! Low tech: flyers and talk to them at drop off/pick up!!
Finally right? Let the tech flow :)
A5: we do 'all calls' to Ps, flyers, some Ts email, FB, and Twitter
no but just mentioned it as well. I will check it out!
A5: Billboards and listservs can make phone calls. Nothing seems to top a handwritten note though.
I ask lots of questions @ open-house. I get many guest speakers that way. https://t.co/Ogqbqa7s8F
A4: Getting to know Ps & their interests makes a difference. Find out about their passions, then direct them to help school.
A5: Principal send recorded messages on phone, I have that all Ps sign up for, paper flyers
A5- is the most powerful communication tool I use. Individual and group conversations. Have to be consistent.
A5: we do Twitter & school website, monthly newsletter, fliers home, phone calls. want to add Instagram this year
A5 I can't think of anything that is low tech. We are pretty paperless.
A5 : is a virtual school which relies on . We use & currently.
sports events and arts events bring lots of parents to school. Then have a real list of opportunities.
Problem w paper flyer is that they get 'lost' with older Ss - like older than 3rd grade lol
A5: I walk Ss out at dismissal & see Ps
Yes. We send hone letters w/ Ss but also phone-calls, emails, texts, remind 101 and even Twitter. https://t.co/MXNMvIa66x
Q5 Does your school have both high and low tech ways to communicate with families? Please give examples.
School still uses flyers. More frequent communication via and Remind. F2f best.
A5: Hi-Tech:Twitter,Website. Lo-Tech: Auto-dialers,snailmail,flyers,marquee.
A5: Yes, letters and flyers mailed home, phones, email, Remind, Google Classroom, Edmodo.
Or Kinder & 1st grade Ss who actually lose them. ;) https://t.co/PTgtXxMTOk
Problem w paper flyer is that they get 'lost' with older Ss - like older than 3rd grade lol
No worry about those that do not have devices?
yes they are, 25 adults making 5 calls a week, means lots of positive one on one conversation throughout the year
Q5 I like Twitter Facebook and Instagram
Sports events are HUGE at our school. Same with Performing Arts.
A5: we use Email as well as robo calls, electronic and paper newsletters, EUSD just launched a new website
hand written notes in our new high tech world is huge!!
A5- Google VoicevThis one is tricky, but I use it and plan on using it more this year Phone,Text on your phone but not your number
Q5 Forgot Google Forms and
don't collect a volunteer list and then do nothing. Give parents decisions in SSC, ELLAC and PTA that matter.
Was reading some posts and have to say great ideas have been shared thru
I know sad huh? But I still do psych... I gave 4 still in school so time is limited. https://t.co/jyO559tzYL
I have to be aware that as my child gets older, may not want me to volunteer for field trips, etc. Rather would want to be w/peers
It takes more time and means more. Not easy communication.
A5: Website, emails, phone calls. Added Instagram last year. Very popular. Am thinking of adding FB. Starting to use Remind.
We are 1:1 with iPads. That's not really an issue.
A5: I plan on using for all of my newsletters this year and only printing those who need translation or don't have access.
A5: School sends letter home every Mon, robo calls 4 reminders, I do phone calls for personal outreach.
my child's school has class foo. We will be trying it out this year.
The A5 responses makes me think back to the days i spent hours sending home postcard to parents. Tech makes it so much easier!
Don't know how I ever survived without Google Forms.
As long as they WANT to engage.
A5- Low Tech--The all Call. Probably still our most effective tool. If it ain't broke...
A5: Good ole fashioned phone calls for low tech. Parent link and peach jar for high tech. I also use Remind.
Class Foo? Typo or a thing?
Gotta sign out early. Thx Gr8 topic 4 beck to school! Best wishes 4 all starting a new school year!! Cheers!!
&the most meaningful on the other end? 3 kids 21 years of schooling can't say that we have had any. Don't forget good 1
It used to be that the tech was special, now it is ever present and the special communication is the postcard.
I've tried class Twitter and Instagram but Ps aren't there. How do you get them to join?
A few of our teachers went to the Seesaw trading the other day. Very impressive!
If everything fails, no device, no phone, then a counselor or social worker will have a home visit. https://t.co/jkz4g84oD4
No worry about those that do not have devices?
, Google Forms, and . Has anyone used Voxer to communicate with parents?
We make a lot of phone calls & love & email because all three allow for
Looking forward to reading after the chat tonight!
My daughter still wanted me-she liked me there when she was older so she could use my credit card.
Q6 How are new families welcomed into the overall culture of your school? How are they made to be a part of your school’s family?
I was seriously feeling awesome about upcoming school year, then this topic came up, totally realized how BAD a job my school does
we have been very successful as a school. Most use this tool. Great because can be used on smartphone.
Thanks! Good luck starting off on the right foot!
great idea, I am going to looking into it as well!
My bad. Meant Class Dog.Although a class foo could be cool too
Postcards take too long now!
I worked a ton on myself, my room, my new tools, updating lessons, so much to look forward to, but home school comm is really bad
A5: Is anyone getting translation for their Remind or all English only?
Q6 How are new families welcomed into the overall culture of your school? How are they made to be a part of your school’s family?
Maybe name the dog Foo :)
Discouraging bc it has to be a systems approach, not Ts in silos doing it
A6: get to know their names! Get them partnered with a PTA parent! Give them extra attention! Start a new parent coffee chat!
Interesting chat tonight! Looking forward to more in the future. Good luck to all in the new school year!!
Kids and parents know that, the ones who get them light up and connect.
W our non Eng. Families, we invite them in to lrn Eng. via Rosetta Stone. My Pr. purchased lic. for Ps.
A6:We have monthly coffee meetings. We have new Ss lunch activities monthly. Maybe we should do something similar for parents
I have tested it out a little bit. Will give it another try this year.
a6) trying to figure out a better way here. Can't wait to hear what others think!
Totally true! When I pointed this out she never complained about me tagging along again!
Thanks for joining us - we are here every Sun at 8pm PST except holidays :)
A6: Incoming freshman parents are invited to orientations towards the end of the previous school year.
A6: treat them like its 1st day o school but at a higher speed to get them caught up. Invite them into your class to help or hang.
then change it. Start with the Ps in your class/classes
Q6: We hold P/T conference 1st month w/new families. Principal or AP joins. Makes a big difference making families feel welcome.
Yes I still send home postcards. It is nice to get a positive note in the nail. A surprise. https://t.co/rubAQCRhmM
The A5 responses makes me think back to the days i spent hours sending home postcard to parents. Tech makes it so much easier!
The journey of a thousand miles is made with a first step. create change.
no but voxer is a great idea. I tried to use it for a Ss book club but it's blocked for them.
I like the food turck idea again for Q6 too
Honestly, stopped following chat :10 bc all had such great things happening, and I felt bad, despite working so much over summer
The best form of parent communication I've used is the random card, I try to write 3-4 a week to Ss/Ps/Ts/staff
It is amazing. The ability to upload digital creations easily alone is worth its weight in gold.
A6 Tours, introductions, meet and greets- we smother them.
A6: if possible our Principal or VP try to greet all new families when they register, small school so easier to make happen
A5: Schools using Twitter and FB as well. We have a district FB page We are doing it well thanks to our awesome tech team
make it personal. Principals out front in the AM. Park where Ss live and ride a bus. Join the neighborhood. Better than written
I personally am going to have a great year, but as a school team, I have no idea, but I have some doubts
A6: Be visible and approachable. Getting to know families & interests, etc. Starting monthly coffees w/ the principal.
I put incentives like shout outs for joining up. delivered to their car from a sign up raffle is fun.
Good luck to all who start tomorrow. I still have 3 weeks :)
Thanks everyone for a great chat! Son is begging for his Harry Potter reading time!
That is why we are all here - to learn from each other right? https://t.co/8xrLhHubBQ
Honestly, stopped following chat :10 bc all had such great things happening, and I felt bad, despite working so much over summer
A6 : All scholars are provided eMail, will provide shirts too. Every message from me says 'family.'
Smile and say hello to EVERYBODY!
Love this idea - we all need to take this idea and use it this year! Lets commit to 3 notes a week! https://t.co/7foiWwYGmC
The best form of parent communication I've used is the random card, I try to write 3-4 a week to Ss/Ps/Ts/staff
I totally agree! It's amazing what a simple hello and smile can do. :)
I hope you and the YVES team has a great start to the year!
Have fun! -3 points for Griffondor for laving early though :
Tomorrow starters...remember, "There is only one you for all time, fearlessly be yourself!" https://t.co/lcA4ufCpbD
Good luck to all who start tomorrow. I still have 3 weeks :)
Time to run. Early day even though we don't start for 2 weeks.
A6: As a principal I always Met new parents and escorted new Ss to their class I would tell key parent leaders about new families
Last one! Q7 is here! -------->
You really are Wonder Woman! Do you have the bullet protective bracelets too?
Q7 Elem does a much better job working with parents than secondary - how secondary teachers/schools become more parent friendly?
Understand - I wish you the best of luck then. All you can do is model it and hope someone notices I guess.
Ss love it when new kids arrive. It is the talk of the halls. S helpers follow them for a week & help them https://t.co/GJtckEQkTF
Q6 How are new families welcomed into the overall culture of your school? How are they made to be a part of your school’s family?
A7: when you find the answer let the rest of us know ;)
Q7 Elem does a much better job working with parents than secondary - how secondary teachers/schools become more parent friendly?
A7: Don't stop asking!! Create a variety of opportunities! Don't stop asking! Don't stop asking!!
True! That is why I put this Q in here...so much different in secondary :(
Q7 Keep communication home even if it is only a one way street
a7) can't speak for all but in many cases remember you teach kids and not a subject & will go a long way!
We usually gave 150-160 students in junior high as Ts. Challenging to bond w/ every parent. But we try. https://t.co/njHtbveYvm
Q7 Elem does a much better job working with parents than secondary - how secondary teachers/schools become more parent friendly?
Secondary has sports. Use that as an opportunity to develop outreach w/families.
A7: this is possible if the school policy encourages Ps/guardians onsite. If no: after hrs are only option.
Love it! https://t.co/LOvntPw5JK
a7) can't speak for all but in many cases remember you teach kids and not a subject & will go a long way!
I believe if we transition our from content & skill to happy health Ss, we will be on the road https://t.co/HMwtLeTMit
Q7 Elem does a much better job working with parents than secondary - how secondary teachers/schools become more parent friendly?
A7 : is launching our Parent Advisory Council this year. Asking for input on program, marketing, LCAP & more!
keep channels of communication open and show Ps and Ss you care. https://t.co/njHtbveYvm
Q7 Elem does a much better job working with parents than secondary - how secondary teachers/schools become more parent friendly?
Thanks everyone. Happy 1st day to you all. Signing off.
Have a great start to your year!
you can be the catalyst! once your Ss start talking you'd be surprised how fast others want to try too
A7:Remind ourselves that MS&HS Ss were once little Elem Ss and age doesn't determine need for involvement & support for all
So true right - when the kids talk, other teachers may take action (like the EF Hutton commercial)
Thank you Ryan for hosting tonight. A great dialogue as usual. Great questions.
have a great year if you start tomorrow! And remember to be thankful for living in one of the most amazing places on earth.
A HUGE heartfelt thank you to all of you who skipped watching the olympics to join our chat tonight!
