Join in the #HISDAdminChat conversation each Sunday night at 6pm CST as we discuss the challenges we face and the successes we celebrate while learning and leading as an HISD Administrator.
Agreed! Oh I have my own form of break dance. Family members have such respect for it they beg me to keep it on the down low...y'know, just for them. #HISDAdminChat
Happy Sunday! I’m Errica Dotson-Hooper, Proud member of #DoganNation. I’ve always wished I could sing. But God knows I’d be singing my responses to every question! #HISDAdminChat
A1: passion; willingness to learn & grow; heartfelt love for kids & willingness to do whatever it takes to help kids bring out their genius #HISDAdminChat
A1) When considering new staff, above all else, I value people who talk about kids. And draw their inspiration from making a difference. My team of Ts can help a newbie get better as a T in terms of strategies and content. Have to like kids. #HISDAdminChat
A1: Talent :) But to me that means trying find people with the right character to do the work. Anyone can learn a new math curriculum but there are some thing that cannot be taught. #hisdadminchat#10principles#BetterTogether
A1. I value the commitment to want to be with OUR students. In a district like ours, there are so many choices. If a new team member really wants to be on our campus, we can work with them! #HISDAdminChat
A1: Growth mindset, open to feedback, team player, whatever it takes skills and positive attitude regardless of challenges! Is this too much to ask for? #HISDAdminChat
Tracy Elam, Secondary DAEP -H.S. Counselor and I have always been in awe of my friends who speak Spanish and French. I would love to learn these two languages. #HISDAdminChat
A1: When considering new staff, I value individuals who are true to their talents, strengths, and areas of improvement. None of us are perfect, but I respect someone who is open to feedback and willing to work, in efforts to become proficient. #HISDAdminChat
A1: Experience, although not necessarily in teaching. I love when someone has real life experiences that they're willing to share. It means they'll know how to make connections with students beyond giving grades in a gradebook. #hisdadminchat

Q1 #HISDAdminChat I value the skillset they bring, their knowledge about and interest in the school community, and a sincere desire to see students succeed.
A1: Above all, passion and commitment are key look fors. You could nurture and develop skill but if your heart is not in the work, it won’t work! #HISDAdminChat

Absolutely agree. I place high value on people that worked extensively in restaurants. Not just 2 months and quit. People who did it for long stretches. Have to know how to work with all types, communicate, multi-task. #HISDAdminChat

A2: Selection has to do with evaluating the candidate’s qualifications but hiring is when the actual offer is extended. #FormerHRintern 😉#HISDAdminChat
A2: Hiring is filling a position. Selecting means choosing someone to join your team, culture, family. They are the best you can find - you need them more than they need you. #10principles#HISDAdminChat
I believe there’s no difference I think it’s just the sequence... first you select the traits you’d like in a team member... then you hire. #HISDAdminChat
A2) Never really thought about. Hiring is bringing on board and find best spot whereas selecting is choosing someone for something specific (maybe a missing piece ). Good question. Hmm. #HISDAdminChat
A2: Hiring seems more perfunctory. Something you have to do in a timely manner. Selecting means putting in the time to consider all candidates and find the best match. #hisdadminchat

A2: Hiring is what you do when you let the world know that you're accepting applications from people looking for a job. Selecting is choosing the very best person for a job and persuading them to stop doing what they're doing and come join you. #HISDAdminChat
A2: Hiring is just filling a position. Selecting is finding the right educator that will change lives at our campus, connect and make things happen! #HISDAdminChat

A2 the selecting takes the time, it is knowing the needs and how we can look deeply to find a person that will continue to move our system forward for our kids, hiring is the final paperwork piece #HISDAdminChat

A2. Adding new people to the community is one of the most important jobs we have. We should never settle and ensure we select the best candidate to serve kids and add value to the team. They must be someone who will help to make the vision a reality. #HISDAdminChat
A2- I’ve learned the hard way - the difference. I’ve seen master teachers in their first year that were SELECTED. And I’ve seen mediocre teachers that were hired. Big difference. #HISDAdminChat

Q3 - Do I have to choose? Sometimes the personnel dictates that you find a good fit for personalities. But if your school culture needs a boost- you’re looking for someone with a vested heart. #HISDAdminChat
It depends on the vacancy... however, there’s something magical in bringing someone along that ends up showing you things you’d never even imagined needing/wanting. Like you @JStephensArtEd So much creativity! #DoganNation#HISDAdminChat

A3 The importance of selecting the good fit can not be overstated. It is imperative that when we are bringing another team member on board, we identify the right person(s) who will strengthen the capacity of the team and help move us toward our vision of S success #HISDAdminChat
A3: The best fit IS the missing piece. When you find someone who can do the work and gel with your team, then your team can move forward with purpose and peace as a cohesive unit. #HISDAdminChat
A3: I think good fit. Someone who's a good fit means they're part of the team. This helps when needs of the school change. People who are a good fit for the school will change and fill in missing pieces if needed. #hisdadminchat
A3 #HISDAdminChat I feel as though these two can go hand-in-hand. At times, the "good fit" becomes the missing piece. This is particularly true when teachers are given a chance to give input during the selection process.

A3: Selecting someone who is a great fit and a missing piece is equally important. However, we must avoid confusing ambition with talent. Select someone who is a team player, willing to build relationships, professional, and knows how to work effectively. #HISDAdminChat
A3. A good fit! The missing piece could just be "a math teacher" to fill a spot for example. However, a good fit is someone that compliments your campus... they belong. They are not just there to fill a spot. You can tell the difference. #HISDAdminChat
I do want to hire for fit, but "fit" can be a tricky term. I do not wish to suggest that the new person must fit into everything we do. I want us to fit with the new hire, too #HISDAdminChat
I always strive to do this. Choosing someone & instantly give permission to not just keep doing it "our way". I tell them we aren't bringing them in to the team to sit on the bench. Time to get to to work. #HISDAdminChat@ToddWhitaker

A3: I try to stick with fit. For example, when i was looking for a nurse, it took 3 months to find the right fit. (I just couldn’t hire a school nurse who didn’t like kids). #HISDAdminChat

#HISDAdminChat I have to wonder if your good fit is what will help your culture or will that missing piece be just what your staff needs. Tough when dealing with personalities.

Or that missing piece may be the runner that gets your teachers enthusiastic about teaching and learning. It starts with one and grows with passion. #HISDAdminChat
