Welcome to tonight's #edchatie discussion.
As usual, before we begin, please introduce yourself and remember to add in the hashtag #edchatie to all tweets so they can be collated at the end of the chat in an hour.
#edchatie Stephen, trainee teacher of History and MFL (German and French) in Irish-medium sector. Am an unashamed fanboy of the exemplary CPD offered by @CorkHTA.
Not to hijack #edchatie or anything but.....did anybody of my generation watch a video on abortion in 90s in secondary school? As part of what subject? Is it still shown today? #repealthe8th
Fred Boss, 2nd level Art teacher, currently with @NCCAie
Looking forward to chatting about "What sort of meaningful CPD do teachers engage in that improves their teaching methodology, and does the DES provide real opportunity for these CPD's?
#edchatie
I’m Niamh, Primary school teacher specializing in the area of Nurture and Wellbeing. I’ve ran several CPD’s/Courses in the area of mindset(NLP) &self development for staff. Received great responses around self awareness/team building opportunities for staff&schools! #edchatie
Flex your typing fingers - tonight's #edchatie discussion on "What sort of meaningful CPD do teachers engage in that improves their teaching methodology, and does the DES provide real opportunity for these CPD's?" is about to start in 5 minutes
Gavin, Múinteoir Gaeilge. I use twitter for CPD but am also undertaking an MEd as well. Interested to see how others are doing it. Especially with Cosán coming our way #edchatie
It's an interesting document, recognising the informal forms of CPD but also trying to police it. Has great potential if followed through properly #edchatie
We're into tonight's #edchatie discussion on "What sort of meaningful CPD do teachers engage in that improves their teaching methodology, and does the DES provide real opportunity for these CPD's?"
Personally don't see the DES providing real opportunities for teacher to engage with meaningful CPD. Most of the CPD is done byt teachers by themselves #edchatie
I did a little study on #edchatie as CPD and Cosán as part of an MEd assignment last year and tweeted out the results. You can see them here: https://t.co/iCb4Eqg8uV
I find the largest barrier to Formal CPD is cost. Cosan Looks interesting, but from what I have read seems to do little more than state the obvious. Its a little too generic for me. #edchatie
I would be interested to know if teachers would then be enabled in schools to bring back their CPD experiences and integrate them into their work

I think one of the simplest forms of CPD is giving teachers time to discuss their approaches and pedagogues with each other.
The most effective classes I've taught were planned after discussions with colleagues.
Sometimes just bouncing ideas around opens doors!

Niall Murphy arriving slightly late. In @KinsaleComSch we pioneered Feilte Scoile. Further details around the model are available at https://t.co/wSYLni7uAG#edchatie Fantastic in house professional development
Áine on secondment with JCT science -Teachers attending STE (A)M in Junior Cycle events have commented on the fact that not all elective CPD is aligned to the curriculum - and maybe it should be #edchatie
Should we be insisting on CPD that enhances pedagogical content knowledge along with teacher agentic behaviour. Short sharp CPD often results in sharing content without developing teacher agency. #edchatie
Short Sharp CPD often results in a folder full of handouts stuck in a cupboard. Programs with follow through which generate communities of practice, may take more effort, but be more effective. #edchatie
Getting staff who've been to CPD to feedback to the rest of the staff at a meeting is great for this. It's an easy and effective way to spread the love #edchatie

We're halfway through tonight's #edchatie discussion on "What sort of meaningful CPD do teachers engage in that improves their teaching methodology, and does the DES provide real opportunity for these CPD's?"
Transcript will be collated later on tonight
Good question being asked here tonight on #edchatie about "What sort of meaningful CPD do teachers engage in that improves their teaching methodology, and does the DES provide real opportunity for these CPD's?"
@fboss yes and I feel this is where our problem often is. Very often people do look for the quick fix solution i.e. a folder of ideas. How can we support teaching professionals to value a CPD that calls for deep engagement, risk taking and focused theoretical discussion?
Its often a refreshing mix of teachers and Software Geeks. The snacks can be good too, and the venues are often interesting. #edchatie. I would also mention https://t.co/TccXYjF8NT CESI conferences as a more mainstream alternative #edchatie
I've learned so much from peers and colleagues just popping into my classroom to have a look.
The feedback is always super and it challenges you to mix up your teaching.
Also #teamteaching is even better.

The silver Bullet model: There is one big insight which we have all been missing which will transform our practice. In my experience, things worth doing, take time and effort. I've stopped believing in Magic. #edchatie
We're nto the famous final five minutes of tonight's #edchatie about "What sort of meaningful CPD do teachers engage in that improves their teaching methodology, and does the DES provide real opportunity for these CPD's?"
Any last thoughts, ideas or solutions?
Couldn't agree more. Value in learning, sharing and collaboration that is meaningful, challenging and requires us to challenge our thinking and adapt to our own circumstances. #edchatie

Its easy to be cynical. But Learning about what you enjoy doing is fun, if not immediately, then later when something you picked up makes a day got better, or helps a student engage. #edchatie
