#whatisschool is an award winning edchat space where people can express an unbiased response to questions about schooling, where educators have a voice in shaping the future through their experience, recommendations and interests. Join us Thursdays 7pm ET / 11pm GMT / Friday 7am SGT/WA (Perth) / Friday 9am AEDT / Friday 11am NZT.
Good Morning from Mumbai friends! Its 4:30am, ready to kick off the day with #whatisschool chat around empathy before heading to #asbpluggedin for two days of face-to-face sharing & learning! 😊
A1)school will be a place of joy where everyone feels included, respected. It’s a great sign of happy present and wonderful future ahead for our children. #whatisschool#sparkempathy
Already, we have people from 12 different countries at #whatisschool today and the number continues to climb - it’s always a treat to have so many diverse eduactors join
The empathy developed between all stakeholders (students, staff, parents/guardians/families, community) would be evident in interactions witnessed when walking into the school, walking down the hallways, and into the classrooms. #whatisschool
A1: I think it is important at first to define empathy - I see empathy as "the ability to understand, share and respond to the feelings of others" #whatisschool
Hi everyone! I'm Kristin, joining in from New York. I'm on the Empatico team and also do work with my local, urban district. Been looking forward to this chat all week! #whatisschool
A1. A school becomes a strong positive community where every little success and diversity is celebrated by all the members when acting with empathy. Diverse minds generate better results! #whatisschool
A1: Empathy allows us to work through our disagreements or frustrations in a healthier way...I don't think the school would be utopia but it would be healthier and safer. #whatisschool
A1 #whatisschool I think about service-learning & how this might be a focus/lens for learning.Caring for others through acts of kindness. @TeachSDGs is present & a part of the school culture.. taking care.. connecting globally.. kindness is ever present throughout..@EmpaticoOrg
A1: Great question! I don't think my school has the complete answer, but our ES & MS are definitely making progress. We celebrate community, use restorative justice, get students to really reflect on their actions -- both good & bad. We also focus on relationships. #whatisschool
A1: If students were better able to understand their own feelings and the feelings of others, they will be able to help others and think from their perspectives when working collaboratively #whatisschool
Already, we have people from 12 different countries at #whatisschool today and the number continues to climb - it’s always a treat to have so many diverse eduactors join
A1: School would be a safe and open environment where all Ss are accepted and respected for their differences. It would be inbed in the culture and we wouldn't have to explicitly talk about it. #Whatisschool
Hi all! I'm Kelsey from New York City. I work at Empatico and am so excited to hear from educators around the world and discuss how we can spread empathy around the world! #whatisschool
A1. The kindness, the thoughtfulness, the creativity and learning that could be derived from it!!! How good would it be! How good would our world be #whatisschool
A1 - It really would be a place of support and care. I imagine lots of charity and service work, community projects and social justice #iscbrazil#whatisschool
That's a great point about Ss understanding their own feelings. I just watched a good 2014 TED talk on emotional/mental health and how we neglect it. #whatisschool
A1: Through empathy students learn to understand each other, which helps them to build friendships based on positive relationships of trust #whatisschool
As a parent I teach my own children about empathy and kindness through modeling and lifestyle. This doesn't seem to be enough for my classroom. Some kids don't seem to get it. #whatisschool
A1. If you had true empathy in a school would every project have true purpose? Community projects would have 100% buy in from parents and students and outside influences because they really want to make a change because they feel connected?
#whatisschool
Would also like to add a difference between empathy and compassion.Empathy is experiencing another’s emotion while compassion is an empowered state that lets us take action ,where we want the best for other person.Empathy eventually leads to compassion #whatisschool#sparkempathy
A1 A school where students act with empathy is a happy school! Kids are not worried, nervous, anxious about the future; instead they are excited, friendly, loving, caring and smile a lot!! #whatisschool
Already, we have people from 12 different countries at #whatisschool today and the number continues to climb - it’s always a treat to have so many diverse eduactors join
A2: Empathy is when you consider another persons behaviors/actions from their perspective instead of your own. You can't really empathize with someone when they are experiencing something you don't know, but you can try to meet them where they are. #whatisschool
A2: Empathy to me means that I am able to cope with my own emotions and feelings well enough to understand and react appropriately to someone else's. #whatisschool
2) Empathy means celebrating difference and diversity and use this as a powerful tool to promote positivism and strong relationships in the classroom and school. #whatisschool
Already, we have people from 12 different countries at #whatisschool today and the number continues to climb - it’s always a treat to have so many diverse eduactors join
A1: #whatisschool reading Daring to Lead by @BreneBrown if we all lead with Empathy and wholehearted authenticity a mush more comfortable and safe environment in which to learn! #creativelyconnectededu
A2: empathy means everything to me. Without it, nobody is going to achieve much. Connections and empathy are the top two important things on my list! #whatisschool
A2: Empathy is the ability to think, care and feel for others and genuinely understand where they are coming form. I like the idea of connecting for good #whatisschool
A2 #whatisschool@EmpaticoOrg I think about empathy as imagining and thinking about what it must be like for someone else.. the deepest feeling of caring.. your emotions become compassionate.. perspective is widened, positive change happens..
A2. Understanding why others behave and react the way they do. Feeling their pain and being able to look at situations with a broader perspective #whatisschool
A2. Empathy is a tricky one. It is hard to empathise with a personify you have not walked in their shoes. Empathy is trying to understand from the other persons perspective, an awareness of or sensitivity towards another. #whatisschool
A2: Empathy is being able to see the world from another person's perspective and understand that we may not agree, but that doesn't mean we can't be friends or work together. Together we can accomplish great things, but we will not always agree. #whatisschool
A2: It's perhaps cliche, but I love the simple definition of standing in another's shoes. Sometimes just stopping to do that for 30 seconds changes everything I thought or thought I knew. #whatisschool
A2) For me, Empathy is taking a wider view, trying to understand all of the different facets of the situation. In a school env,we work with people in different roles -parents, admin, students, colleagues. Empathy helps to have non judgemental relationships with all #whatisschool
Empathy ... understanding from another person's perspective. I may not be able to feel what they are feeling, but I can try to understand ... validate their right to feel the way they do. #whatisschool
I like this emphasis on empathy as it relates to "self." Something we need to be very intentional about I think. Really great! #whatisschool#SparkEmpathy
A2. Considering others. Thinking of things from their point of view. Their needs, wants and desires. Their feelings. In EVERYTHING we do. #whatisschool
#whatisschool a1 The value of empathy at year 8 and 9 is desperately needed so students see from all points of view rather than just their thunderstorm if emotions position. It's definitely a work that needs to be in progress.
Hi Connie! Happy Thursday! Love art educators! Have you connected with @GrundlerArt and the #K12artchat community? So many of my fav friends there! #whatisschool
A1: I wonder if an increase in empathy would also increase curiosity? Empathy is a key characteristic of designers, so in my mind they're related. #whatisschool
Q3) According to research, practicing skills like perspective taking, critical thinking, cooperation, and respectful communication are important for students to become kind and empathetic adults. How does that apply to you, your students, and your school? #whatisschool
Yes I think so. Love that the design thinking process is rooted in empathy. Curiosity, perspective taking, empathy. All connected I think. #whatisschool
Q3: According to research, practicing skills like perspective taking, critical thinking, cooperation, and respectful communication are important for students to become kind and empathetic adults. How does that apply to you, your students, and your school? #whatisschool
A2 My first response to this question is to understand how another person is feeling but I would extend this to having an understanding of the 'feelings' of an environment @EmpaticoOrg#whatisschool
Yes, but I often find kids have more empathy than adults as they can see through, or past, the BS and look more honestly at a situation. Do some of us loose empathy as we get older?
#whatisschool
Q3) According to research, practicing skills like perspective taking, critical thinking, cooperation, and respectful communication are important for students to become kind and empathetic adults. How does that apply to you, your students, and your school? #whatisschool
A3: As a dad to a 5 year old and a 1 year old. I am always promoting, modelling and expecting good manners. I love to teach my kids about being kind, respectful and how to work with others #whatisschool
A3: As a Ts educator I strive to show Ts how to use literature, specifically picture books, and digital citizenship to build, practice and reinforce empathy. We must teach it before it's needed...proactive vs reactive. #whatisschool
A3: In addition to developing empathy, those skills are important parts of content area instruction as well, so it is possible to incorporate those skills during a regular school day. #whatisschool
Q3: According to research, practicing skills like perspective taking, critical thinking, cooperation, and respectful communication are important for students to become kind and empathetic adults. How does that apply to you, your students, and your school? #whatisschool
A2 To me being empathetic means relating and connecting to others with the mere purpose of inspiring, motivating, and empowering others who may need inspiration, motivation, or empowerment. Basically, taking the time to know, listen and help others! #whatisschool
A1 Schools with empathy as their base would be places of where a shared spirit of inquiry would be nurtured in a culture of trust. Ss would be able to raise their voices w/out fear or stress. #whatisschool (Carol ELA Consultant from Long Island here)
Q3 is up! Always so appreciative of how the team at @EmpaticoOrg values research in instructional design. Looking forward to hearing responses to this question as considered by global educators! #whatisschool
Q3: According to research, practicing skills like perspective taking, critical thinking, cooperation, and respectful communication are important for students to become kind and empathetic adults. How does that apply to you, your students, and your school? #whatisschool
A3: These skills translate to every interaction you have, every job you'll take, and every decision you'll make.
So happy to see my community and district (@usd348) rally around these skills, and embed them in our everyday instruction. #whatisschool
A3) Having students from so many cultures and countries at school, it is common to have misunderstandings because of language and cultural barriers. Developing skills that develop empathy is essential and an opportunity to understand others and think out of the box #whatisschool
A3: I see it in those teachable moments that a teacher takes advantage of. I would like to see communication and critical thinking as required skills starting with Kindergarten. #whatisschool
Q3: According to research, practicing skills like perspective taking, critical thinking, cooperation, and respectful communication are important for students to become kind and empathetic adults. How does that apply to you, your students, and your school? #whatisschool
Totally agree and we take on responsibilities of adulthood that allow us to prioritise actions and feelings - empathy for another is tough when reports are due and the kids need picking up from school and ...
#Whatisschool
#whatisschool a2 I know categorising empathy is important but equally is acknowledging that just as you acknowledge a feeling doesn't mean it is ok or that your feelings are less. For teens and some adults too, I think this is a stumbling block
A3 #whatisschool@EmpaticoOrg Global exposure and exploration is a wonderful place to begin.. @TeachSDGs offers endless opportunities to collaborate, think critically, & find positive solutions to needs globally.
A3: Our House program focuses on lessons where students practice these skills. They do role plays, discussions, skits, and we celebrate Ss doing them during assemblies & on social media. #whatisschool
A3: Our Ss look to us for ways to act. I am always trying to show my Ss how I work with my peers and model respectful conversations with other Ts. #whatisschool
A3: I feel so fortunate, because as a speech language pathologist I am able to work on all of these skills every time I work with them. Best job ever! #whatisschool
Q3: According to research, practicing skills like perspective taking, critical thinking, cooperation, and respectful communication are important for students to become kind and empathetic adults. How does that apply to you, your students, and your school? #whatisschool
A3: Attention on some of these, but I would have to say not enough time spent on truly developing the skills in the risk to cover everything. Practising has to become intentional #whatisschool
Q3: According to research, practicing skills like perspective taking, critical thinking, cooperation, and respectful communication are important for students to become kind and empathetic adults. How does that apply to you, your students, and your school? #whatisschool
A3: How does it not! @P21Learning 4 Cs - making art requires all of this ! Our visual art standards include - Creating - presenting/producing - responding & connecting!! #whatisschool
Q3: According to research, practicing skills like perspective taking, critical thinking, cooperation, and respectful communication are important for students to become kind and empathetic adults. How does that apply to you, your students, and your school? #whatisschool
A3 - I appreciate the idea of perspective taking and its importance. This is why experiential education or service learning trips are so important, they give students an opportunity to learn about empathy and to think beyond themselves #whatisschool
A3 currently launched an in-house contest based on the idea that Ss have to find a problem to solve and the create solution - problem finding is all about empathy #WhatIsSchool
#whatisschool a3 Getting perspective is the long haul trip but a day excursion to speaking respectfully rather than spitting out feelings is the start of a day excursion all my year 8s can achieve. You have to start practicing somewhere.
Q4: According to research, students who connect with peers from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds report increased empathy and are more open to meeting people from new places. How does that learning apply to you, your students, and your school? #whatisschool
Good point. Experiences that gets Ss out of their "normal" and into "other normals" is so important - the world is a big place and we are all at risk of just sticking to what we can see and know. #whatisschool
A3 Involve students in Project-based learning - caring for others and for the natural environment e.g. awareness of charities, taking part in a physical #challenge - 18 miles #AdventureWalk being acknowledged by stakeholders @EmpaticoOrg#whatisschool
A4 My school has taken part in International School Award by British Council. And I feel it is one of the best way to connect with peers of different countries, culture and backgrounds.
#whatisschool
Q4: According to research, students who connect with peers from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds report increased empathy and are more open to meeting people from new places. How does that learning apply to you, your students, and your school? #whatisschool
A3. This is work that I have done for myself in last 2 years, esp perspective taking. Our deans/counselors along w/admins have been diving into these skills. Ts are somewhat frustrated as previous leadership carried the "Iron Fist" =problem Ss robbed of dignity. #WhatIsSchool
Q3: According to research, practicing skills like perspective taking, critical thinking, cooperation, and respectful communication are important for students to become kind and empathetic adults. How does that apply to you, your students, and your school? #whatisschool
A4: I wish I could help make this happen for my students. It never happened for me and I had to wait til an older age (college) to meet people from different places. #whatisschool
A3. I think that sparking empathy in students at international schools comes a bit more naturally as they mix with people from different backgrounds and countries daily. They celebrate our differences, traditions and cultures within the whole school community #whatisschool
A3: We work on these skills daily. We do PBL which incorporates lots of critical thinking, collaboration and communication. We use lots of respect and empathy when working together. Its role modeled and expected.#whatisschool
A4: Our students get and engage often through the work we are doing to integrate this as part of our digital learning model K-12. @ATorrens84 is leading our global collaboration drive #whatisschool
A4 - I think this is where International Service trips can be so powerful! But even if that is out of your schools reach, there are other ways to connect and learn, adopt a school, mystery skype, blog exchanges, buddy classes, etc. #whatisschool
A2: when I think of #empathy, I think of being able to imagine what it's like to be someone else. Putting aside judgement and reservations. #whatisschool
Hi @mrkempnz and #whatisschool people! Todd in Jakarta here. Busy today, with only one eye on the chat.. But just wanted to share this video that I have often shown students. An animated version of @BreneBrown's empathy talk . https://t.co/UfcNsvHJcx
A4: We have 60% Hispanic population, we try to celebrate the culture/celebrations of the countries they/their families come from. We started with community night this year which was fantastic. #whatisschool
Q4: According to research, students who connect with peers from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds report increased empathy and are more open to meeting people from new places. How does that learning apply to you, your students, and your school? #whatisschool
I teach US History ... today we watched a video and discussed "Turning Points" ... after each clip we discussed the different perspectives about the "Turning Point" ... how did it affect different groups ... was it good or bad? #whatisschool
A4: Moving to an international school has been eye opening. My Ss are from all over the world and don't see differences as a bad thing. I feel like I have learned more about empathy from my Ss. #whatisschool
A4: Ensuring that diversity impacts the classroom can mean either we are giving perspective or representation to someone's voice...both are necessary for empathy. Mirrors, windows, sliding glass doors...can you see yourself, can you understand others. #whatisschool
A4: According to our pilot evaluations, students who participate in 2 or more Empatico exchanges with their partner class report increased empathy and perspective taking; interest in meeting people from different places; and perceived commonalities with people from other places.
A4. I would love to connect w/ different schools through the twitter communityare leading. What a great way to connect with far away peers than using the connections we have all made here. #WhatIsSchool NYC students have assumptions about Ss outside of NYC.
Q4: According to research, students who connect with peers from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds report increased empathy and are more open to meeting people from new places. How does that learning apply to you, your students, and your school? #whatisschool
You're so right - all kids deserve that kind of experience. When it happens at younger ages, it can be all the more powerful. #whatisschool@EmpaticoOrg is trying to make this kind of experience more accessible for all. #whatisschool
This is the research I would like every state and local education leader and policymaker to:
1) study
2) believe
3) act on
#whatisschool#Sparkempathy#edchat
A4: While it is possible to connect with other people through reading books, I believe there is something very significant about offering students real-life opportunities to develop empathy by connecting with other people. #whatisschool
#whatisschool a4 Working in schools with 60 cultures means we do need ways to bridge and play and play via a language other than English can help give us more empathy. Suddenly we have a great goal in play, which is always motivating and language level pegs us in some ways.
A4: I have been looking for ways to connect my Ss. So far I have only done competitions. I think U.S. Ss need connection even more than others because they often have no idea what is happening globally. #whatisschool
Q4: According to research, students who connect with peers from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds report increased empathy and are more open to meeting people from new places. How does that learning apply to you, your students, and your school? #whatisschool
A1) If all students learned how to act with empathy I think schools would be a much more beautiful place. It would be a place where students are growing more not just academically but also emotionally. #whatisschool
A4. As a Design Teacher it is invaluable. We empathise through solving probs with #designthinking so being able to consider other cultures, needs and wants opens Ss minds to the bigger world. #whatisschool
A4: @TheRealMrHeino is seeing a real difference and engagement by his students using @EmpaticoOrg with their partner class. Their connections are genuine and authentic --> bit/ly/sparkempathynow #whatisschool
A3: A crucial part of the @asbindia mission is to enhance the lives of others. We begin this early and continue through to 12th year and beyond. Working with #NGOs locally and internationally. It isn't just a one off thing, but woven into curriculum. #asbpluggedin#whatisschool
A4) From growing up TCK, having TCKs & teaching TCKs I totally agree that exposure to cultures & ethnicity & religions & languages helps to make students more empathetic as they understand differences in a new and tangible way. #whatisschool TCK- Third Culture Kid
Q4: According to research, students who connect with peers from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds report increased empathy and are more open to meeting people from new places. How does that learning apply to you, your students, and your school? #whatisschool
A4 the research is not surprising ... being around different people gives you an increased understanding of people from different backgrounds ... ignorance is the real enemy. #whatisschool
A4: Even in a rural community - finding opportunities for students to work and learn from each other - has profound effects on building empathy/understanding.
Plus, that "internet" thing is incredible at extending our district boundaries at a moment's notice.
#whatisschool
I love seeing classes connect for critiques or challenges but we also do little big artists exchanges in our district - the littles draw kindness creatures and the big create them in 3D either in clay or soft sculptures then give it to the little artists! #whatisschool
A1: Utopia. If all students and teachers worked together with the empathy of what the person next to them was feeling, there would be a lot less arguing and a lot more listening. #whatisschool
A4: I've been pushing to get our Ts to do more global activities, but with limited success. In our own classrooms, things are diverse & most of the kids have lived aboard or are foreigners. Our ES has a Culture Day that is really fun. Our Ts travel. #whatisschool
A4 Our Access to Nursing course had all these opportunities and in small groups worked together for #HealthPromotion activities both in college and off-site in health centres @EmpaticoOrg#whatisschool
I love the way u referred to our sheltered worlds as normal. U no longer need to travel to experience the bigger world outside your cnr of the globe. #whatisschool
Had a similar conversation just today! We MUST be intentional in taking ACTIVE steps to ensuring we are working and learning with people from different backgrounds! @markjotter#whatisschool
International School Award is a project for students in which they designed seven activities and share atleast 03 activities internationally and 4 nationally. Skype session, video exchange are compulsory for it
A4) We are lucky to have students from many different backgrounds in a single class, but still it is such a great opportunity to connect with students from other schools and countries though platforms like Empatico Skype of Flipgrid. #whatisschool
A3) As a teacher I believe is it important to show these feelings and to model them to students. If it is something they see you doing and understand how it's helpful they are more likely to pick it up as their own behavior. #whatisschool
A4) totally agree.I am who I am today because of all the opportunities I had to live in different countries. When we interact with people from different backgrounds, we really start seeing how same we are internally as a human even if we practice different routines.
#whatisschool
A3: Working at an #IB school, we worked towards creating globally minded students with those skills across disciplines. I find that giving students ample time to work, create and discuss different problems hits a lot of these skills need in today's world. #whatisschool
A4: I was born in the US, raised in Brazil and living in India & married to an Indian. These experiences have shaped me, and the story is mirrored for most of my students. With such a transient population, its our responsibility to prepare them for transitions. #whatisschool
A5 I do believe it is the need of time for an educator to behave like "WATER" because water is a universal solvent and knows how to make its own channel no matter what comes on its way.
#whatisschool
A5) Teachers opening their classrooms and collaborating with other teachers from school and out of school is the first step to promote empathy and global collaboration. #whatisschool
Thanks Annie students promoted the charity during an International Nurses' Day celebration at the college, the walk was conducted in the local countryside and the stakeholders presented a certificate to all students helped raise funds for the charity. @EmpaticoOrg#whatisschool
In reply to
@annsyso, @mrkempnz, @EmpaticoOrg, @EmpaticoOrg
A5: Model behavior with a blog, podcast, Twitter, or Youtube. Ts should be trying to reach out more to the world around them, why not make it about empathy. Have the Ss help you! #whatisschool
A5: Starting with our social media posts, retweets, shares and conversation could have a huge impact on ourselves and others...discussing current events in an age appropriate manner w/our Ss to expose them to global issues. #whatisschool
A4) As an educator I want all my students to be open minded and open to all diversities. I think it is important to expose students to all cultural and educate them so they have an understanding of the struggles of others. #whatisschool
A5: To me, an important part of developing a culture of empathy in a classroom & a school is the expectation that all stakeholders (students, staff, parents/guardians/family, community, etc.) are aware of & actively participate in using skills that develop empathy. #whatisschool
A4: Seeing students from different backgrounds, religions, and communities work together to solve various problems has been a huge wake up call on the need for collaboration not just in the classroom but collaboration world wide. #whatisschool
YES! We talk about our Ss but just as important to be empathetic with staff, the broader school community and the communities we live in. #whatisschool
For those who signed up to @EmpaticoOrg in the last few days as part of #whatisschool (or otherwise), be sure to share your progress as you connect with your partner class. Tag me and @EmpaticoOrg in and share your life changing experiences as you #sparkempathy
A5: Developing a varied classroom library that allows all Ss to see themselves, learn abt others, and make connections between different lives. #whatisschool
A5: By creating an open dialogue with students on what they would like to see changed in the world and how being empathic can start that change. A small shift in the snow can create the largest avalanche. Dream big, start small and off you go! #whatisschool
A5) First, educators need to start with themselves. I think we need to make sure we are demonstrating empathy so that our students can learn it from us. When teaching and interacting with students everyday it is something we need to keep in mind. #whatisschool
I think many educators do not have the same opportunity to openly talk about different groups of people. As a History teacher I have the ability to engage students through events in history that enable them to analyze the event with the benefit of hindsight #whatisschool
I love that Q. 'How did that change my thinking?' So powerful when talking about #empathy but so many other ways to apply it. I might borrow that if thats ok? #whatisschool
In reply to
@KristinOhnstad, @JenWilliamsEdu, @DennisDill, @markjotter
A5: I believe it is important to do random acts of kindness alot. Another important thing is to have the students read as much material about people from other places, learn about different cultures, etc. #whatisschool
A4. Social and global connectedness is important in cultivating mutual respect and understanding. Our students and communities are facing an increase in social isolation, culture-based bullying,a healthy dose of empathy is a sure way to cure these ills #WhatIsSchool@EmpaticoOrg
A6: I'll keep supporting the ES & MS House program with new ideas. I just realized that House is a great place to do some global connection work. Got a new idea today -- thatnks #whatisschool
#whatisschool A5: Live it. Empathy stems from deep relationships & an understanding of circumstances that is hard to replicate via tech. Not to say tech can't help, it very much does, but Ss & Ts have to get outside, reach human to human connections. Needed now more than ever.
A6: I feel that empathy is the best way to incorporate authentic learning experiences. If students are connected to a problem and empathize with it their learning will be long lasting and rich #whatisschool
That is awesome to have such diversity in your classroom. I also love your idea of connecting through those platforms. They are such a great resource! #whatisschool
#whatisschool we are Blossoming buds of today's
We have to spread the fragrance of peace.
We are butterflies of peace.
We have to make world beautiful with our colors.
Come on, lets dance and sing together.
We are brothers and sisters, we are one family
and with that one person comes others who see that it is possible and want to contribute as well. Being the first person is scary but all great things start off as scary first moments. #whatisschool
In reply to
@JenWilliamsEdu, @annsyso, @mrkempnz, @KristinOhnstad
A6) Several classrooms working on the same project and comparing their results with others helps so much. @travellingtale is another great way to connect students with a common writing project #whatisschool
A3: I wonder if an increase in empathy would cause an increase in engagement and motivation to learn. Which might be me restating my question about curiosity. #whatisschool
A6: Continue to help #sparkempathy in conversations with people around the world. I will continue to support my own children in developing their empathetic skills as well #whatisschool
A1 for #whatisschool
This is an interesting question, @mrkempnz My own kids' school is trying to build this through their Burgess Bears program: Inter-grade teams and children get recognized and rewarded for kind, #empathetic behaviors.
Modeling is so important. We can have such an impact as teachers and it's crucial that we use it correctly. Even though it is a lot of pressure they are going to follow what we do just like you said. #whatisschool
A6: In my classroom, I used the brain-based @ConsciousD program which creates a foundation of a school family within the classroom to help students become connected. Empathy can then be developed within those connections. #whatisschool
A6: I do this by having students role model different scenarios in stories and then having an open discussion of what each character are feeling at that moment. Prek students are loving this activity because they are "in the story". #whatisschool
A6: important for all, not just Ts, to always step back at look at things from someone else’s point of view. We all get caught up in our emotions and we need to remember to take that breath, clear our minds and look deeper. Easier said than done #whatisschool
Tomorrow we will be discussing slavery in historical context ... How did people "justify" it ... i enjoy this discussion because all the kids try to wrap their mind around the "How can someone try to justify something so heinous?" Does that mentality still exist? #whatisschool
Please help me thank @EmpaticoOrg for leading today's #whatisschool chat with me - Connect & follow them - they are brilliant! Help them connect to 1 million students globally by signing up here and sharing it with your colleagues --> https://t.co/BRpGCBU34t#sparkempathy
A3 #whatisschool
Far too infrequently, little time is set aside for thinking, cooperation, or respectful communication among adults.
I think there may be ties to collaborative professionalism, @mtpoc & @HargreavesBC
Q3) According to research, practicing skills like perspective taking, critical thinking, cooperation, and respectful communication are important for students to become kind and empathetic adults. How does that apply to you, your students, and your school? #whatisschool

A5 For me it is to take learning outside the classroom to help provide opportunities for students to have empathy with their environment @IOLOutdoorProfs@EmpaticoOrg#whatisschool
In reply to
@mrkempnz, @IOLOutdoorProfs, @EmpaticoOrg
A6) I'd like to teach empathy by first teaching about acceptance and diversity. I want my students to understand that everyone has different struggles and we need to be empathetic toward them. As a teacher I will continue to show this through my own behavior. #whatisschool
A5) Shifting our perspective from I, me and mine to we, us and ours I guess is the first step towards empathy in any environment . Opportunities to collaborate and learn from others, modeling empathy for students are great way to get started #whatisschool
In California today, for example, a clear call to: "develop and support networks for professional learning."
Which is exactly right.
@EmpaticoOrg is a fab lnetwork to support the #CAWay & the new partnership with @CISPisGlobalEd is timely.

Tomorrow we will be discussing slavery in historical context ... How did people "justify" it ... i enjoy this discussion because all the kids try to wrap their mind around the "How can someone try to justify something so heinous?" Does that mentality still exist? #whatisschool

I wonder if this is circular thinking Folks who are interested in connecting with new cultures finds ways to make this happen Those who are hesitant to interact with those who are different are going to put themselves in that position, so what then?
difficult conversations are a must have ... we chatted about Nat Turner today and the Slave Rebellion ... tough question ... Was he a good guy or a bad guy? Depends on who you ask ... #whatisschool

In addition to educators modeling empathy, their own school leaders need to empathetic to their employees too. Hard to be empathetic when you are underpaid, stressed, or overworked @WomenEd_US#WomenEd
A5b) students need to experience empathy to acquire it. It’s hard to show empathy when we ourselves are in survival mode. Reducing anxiety / fear , nurturing compassion , modeling empathy are some great steps towards teaching empathy to students #whatisschool
@Empatico Students can learn so much from each other! I think this type of exposure is so important so that students can gain appreciation for the other cultures and backgrounds #whatisschool
A6: I would integrate empathy by modeling it and living it daily. I would also define it and discuss it with the students. Then I would try to teach/learn with the students about other cultures, and beliefs

As an @EmpaticoOrg fan + consultant, it is my experience that as soon as school systems/districts learn about #empatico they are eager to intro their teachers to the free program and become an #EmpaticoDistrict Only good things can come out of cultivating empathy! #WhatIsSchool
This is why I love SM especially Twitter! It gives us a global perspective on important educational issues and reinforces best practices that are good for all of us and the students we work with!#whatisschool
A5: Starting with our social media posts, retweets, shares and conversation could have a huge impact on ourselves and others...discussing current events in an age appropriate manner w/our Ss to expose them to global issues. #whatisschool
Thank you, Craig, for leading such a phenomenal discussion! We're thrilled for the continued collaboration with you in spreading kindness and sparking empathy! #whatisschool
A5 - It is up to us to model what we want to see in our Ss. So we have to be the ones to push the boundaries of what is available to them. Get more service trips for Ss, involve more charities in the school and work with parents to do the same #whatisschool
