Hey #MinecraftEDU Community! Our Chat is going live w/ @nayrbgo in a minute on MineSchool: Meeting the Needs of the Modern Learner! All are welcome to join the #GBL Chat! #EdTech#game4ed
Hello Hello! A0: Bryan Sanders, High School English Teacher and EdTech Researcher, Los Angeles -- I have to put Seymour Papert as my hero tonight because he captured so many of my other heroes! #MinecraftEdu
Kia ora #minecraftEDU Rachel from Sunny Dunedin, New Zealand. I teach kids chem & digital tech, and my main hero is @noisyteacher but also, all teachers rock
To be honest, I don't know many people outside of this community, so the #1 person that comes to mind is @chellymil cause without her I would never have known this existed! (also she totally opened my eyes about whats possible) #minecraftedu
Q1: The idea of “#MineSchool” has been tossed around to empower multiple methods of using #Minecraft to support student development, but also to teach in multiple ways. What patterns of thinking do you see best supported by the use of Minecraft? #MinecraftEDU

Not so sure about 'patterns of thinking' but iteration and perseverance are two common competencies I come through, as well as collaboration & creativity #MinecraftEdu
A1: I feel like you could structure a lesson to be used by any type of learner, though the obvious answer is the creative thinkers! #minecraftedu has tools that can facilitate it all though!
Just that students don't mind adding to what they build/do, or don't mind going back to the beginning to get it right. but if they 'fail' on paper, often they won't go back and start again.... not sure why it is different in a digital environment #MinecraftEdu
Tons of thinking! Nice points to articulate there. We can add that to the curriculum/pedagogy/outcome mega list -- which should hopefully always grow! #MinecraftEdu
That's well put. You are already anticipating where we go with some of this conversation -- differentiation and Constructivism and beyond! #MinecraftEdu
Good afternoon/evening everyone over on #MinecraftEdu and #EdChat.
I'm lurking here ... will respond when I can! And yes @mr_isaacs. Meeting up with @nayrbgo should be a thing! He's quite the inspiration.
Q2: #Minecraft has the potential to push us to think in new ways about #school. Have you observed any new thinking in your #students or in yourself about creating or completing lessons, units, or objectives when trying to use Minecraft? #MinecraftEdu

I think @PBJellyGames explained this to me with some awesome little cards about types of thinkers. There are kids who prefer destruction, some who prefer creation, some who prefer adventures, and the list really goes on forever. Those patterns translate well into #minecraftedu
Love this line of thought. I do believe that #MinecraftEDU supports organic collaboration and teamwork, when building towards a common goal! #MinecraftEDU
Q2: I have been interested in spatial reasoning and navigation and developing an intuitive sense of distance, direction, and orientation in and under the #minecraft landscape. #MinecraftEdu
Yes! Based on the work of Bartle and his test! @MatthewFarber also introduced me to Amy Jo Kim's work about social learning! Matt, a link please! #MinecraftEDU

A2: students can be cocreators of learning experiences! We can empower kids to demonstrate their learning in a way that’s meaningful to them! #MinecraftEdu
Knock Knock! Ratboy Genius is here! This is a terrific answer. We can easily forget the physics involved in "just playing" that have so much to teach us about how one can use a computer to create such an experience. #MinecraftEdu
A2: Often times when designing a lesson/unit w/ #MinecraftEDU I have a certain outcome in mind. When students take over, they usually go beyond my expectations and take the lesson in new directions I would not have, pushing and challenging my own thinking! #MinecraftEDU
A2: we can embrace how kids learn in informal spaces. This game came with no manual yet it had more resources out there than you’ll find in any text book. Kids know how to learn. Let’s follow their lead. #MinecraftEdu
A2: I'm going to run similarly to what @mr_isaacs just said about learning from students! One of my favorite ideas to introduce is essentially passing the idea of helping with a problem on to students! #minecraftedu
A2: Gaming in general is pushing how we deliver & can potentially solve the more riddled probs of teaching kids w/ "learning disabilities". It's only Tues & already 1 of my new learners who normally can't sit & refuses to stay on task, is doing so in a modded #MinecraftEdu game.
That is awesome! Hey, I have self-diagnosed myself with Adult ADHD and often have trouble sitting and doing a tas for more than 15-20 min at a time, yet, I can challenge myself in #MinecraftEDU for prolonged periods of time.
Q3: Achieving a balance of student voice and graduation outcomes challenges all of us in the profession. How does #EdTech, such as #MinecraftEDU, help us move from traditional objectives, lessons, and units to more student driven outcomes that still support standards?

There are so many of those resources that were written by kids too! And so many of them have skills I have yet to learn, so where possible I like to absorb what I can. #minecraftedu
Yes! Even when I know more than the kids, they practice a skill/concept and return in a week or two, easily surpassing me in ability, which in turn pushes my thinking/learning. Truly recipricol learning! #MinecraftEDU
I think it certainly provides a safe place to chat. I find asynchronous conversations a little easier. I like to take my time in conversations and feel safer, so I can imagine certain students do as well. #MinecraftEDU
A3: #MinecraftEDU allows for instant feedback in game and from peers experiencing our worlds/builds. This is important in the #designthinking process and iteratation. #MinecraftEDU is also a highly visual platform, great for planning and ideating.
A3: cont - #MinecraftEDU Also fits in very well with larger goals and objectives and can be 1 piece of a larger unit to demonstrate some skill or learning. I also enjoy the fact that when we try to represent real world issues in #Minecraft, we often have to create metaphors.
A3: The balance is far more heavily geared towards achieving standards at this point in history, in most schools, so we could make some room for students to play and create in an undefined space and see how we might link it to standards afterwards. #MinecraftEdu
Q4: Discuss your comfort level with a classroom driven primarily by individual and group student inquiries and needs. To what extent did your teacher prep program prepare you to effectively work in a Constructivist and/or differentiated classroom? #MinecraftEDU

Yes, I feel we are in a pendulum swing right now and slowly moving back towards the middle, away from standards based everything. We need balance, which includes time for free and exploratory play. #MinecraftEDU
It's how I have built my program from day one (student inquiry, self-directed, interest-based). But then, I don't think I really count here, as I've no formal training as a teacher! It's all pretty organic, personally. Ironically I find the Ts I hire can't keep up! #MinecraftEdu
A4 - Im much more comfortable with a student driven classroom based on voice & choice, . I had 1 professor prepare me very well, along with my cooperating teacher prepare well. All other professors and practicum, not so #MinecraftEDU
I've seen that too! Everything I do revolve more around the aspects of Minecraft and less around the curriculum... in fact not at all around that for the most part. programs based on those ideas can be really effective! #minecraftedu
You are a teacher, maybe no formal certification, but still an educator. While I do believe that certain pieces of paper are important and should be valued, they should not count above all else! #MinecraftEdu
Yes, it -can- be less around the 'formal' curriculum req's and outcomes ... but now here in British Columbia, the system has changed, and it's LESS about these kinds of measurements, and MORE about individualized learning! We are so lucky! #MinecraftEdu
Agreed. #MinecraftEDU is amazing for building skills. Then put it on the kids to tie in content and subject specific knowledge, based on research and learning! #MinecraftEDU
Q5: Other than #environmental sustainability goals, which are frequently discussed and approached by #schools, what global issues, social justice issues or others make sense to work on through a #Minecraft in #Education approach? #MinecraftEdu

I also enjoy @tinkercad which has a great Download for Minecraft Button. Now with conversions for Java to PE, very easy to import schematics w/ MCEdit and convert maps to PE, which can then be turned into MCWORLD files. #MinecraftEDU
A5: I think that environmental is a fantastic jumpng off point and a natural beginning. However, we can then use this to look at vertical farming to help solve space and hunger issues (and environmental) #MinecraftEDU
The last program I ran ended up being entirely about space. we used the galacticraft mod to get us up there, but once we were there, a kid said: "how can I breath"... We ended up going over everything required to survive and thrive on mars #minecraftedu
A4: Just wanted to make sure I officially stated that my teacher education program really did not do anything to prepare me for a student voice classroom nor differentiation. Has that changed? Are teacher prep programs now accommodating these things? #MinecraftEdu
A5: Another great project is the Block By Block which helps emerging countries redevelop and define common spaces and communal areas. Great to address issues of community, local and global. #MinecraftEDUhttps://t.co/JptsrSiXwJ
A5: Kids need to 'exercise' their anxiety around current events. We can facilitate this by doing something as simple as naming hostile mob spawn eggs, then battling them, or building walls and discussing the consequences of living in a closed community. #MinecraftEdu
I would love to see more teacher digital portfolios where teachers are leaving prep programs with items like educational apps and games that they have built to address students' needs and can say, hey, not only can I create apps, I can teach my students how to to! #MinecraftEDU
