Hello my name is David Lee. I am the ES STEM specialist at @samericanschool. Thank you for joining #whatisschool chat. Please introduce yourself, your name, location and role.
Hey folks, I'm back. I missed last week. Kevin, Instructional Technology Specialist from Virginia Beach. Newtown Elementary. School is 540 2nd and 3rd Graders. Digital Learning Anchor School for the division. #whatisschool
#WhatIsSchool forgot real introduction, paul, Maker Educator, trying to figure out how to help Schools and Teachers get more #MakerCenteredLearning in their life
#WhatIsSchool Shilpi Mindfulness educator, trying to figure out how to help Schools and Teachers #disruptstress in their life and bring restorative practices that are easy to include in the classroom.
A1: To me Creative Problem-Solving is all about thinking beyond the square and it starts with the freedom to play, explore and express ideas #whatisschool
#WhatIsSchool A1 you can see the wheels turning, smoke coming off the top of the head the brain is working so hard, nibbling on something, laser focus...
A1: As a math T, creative problem solving is not writing an equation or making a graph. It is finding an unconventional method through manipulatives or other means. #whatisschool
A1) creative problem solving to me would be sitting down with the student(s) and using ideas like drawing it out or creating a little game to come to a conclusion! #whatisschool Making it fun is a good way to reach a solution
A1: In a classroom it starts with teachers stepping back and giving students the opportunities to express creative ideas and solve problems without confinement to a pre=conceived idea or answer #whatisschool
A1 creative problem solving looks like students connecting learning by coming up with a project that incorporates key ideas, learning or even concepts. #whatisschool
I agree but one thing I have come to realize is that it is better not to have the box at all. For me, problem solving not only resolves an issue but could lead to innovation. #whatisschool
#WhatIsSchool A1: To me it means to not just think "outside the box" to but think as if there is no box. All options are possible. The sky is the limit
A1: For me, creative problem solving is where you are given a problem to solve and you have to create your own solution, its not scripted out for you. #whatisschool
Our district uses the fowler assessment each year to measure growth in scientific process understanding. They are given a problem and have to show how they would work to a solution. No other information is given. 1 example. #whatisschool
A1: creative problem solving can start with one person but often takes a team to really work. You sometimes need a "first follower" to help you run with an idea. #whatisschool
A1: For educators it comes down to how schools run professional learning. Is it chalk and talk with no room for creativity or voice or is learning workshopped with room for creative problem-solving? I know which one I would prefer! #whatisschool
A1. Creative problem solving is allowing Ss to explore different ways to approach problems. And knowing there is often more that one way to solve. #whatisschool
I agree but one thing I have come to realize is that it is better not to have the box at all. For me, problem solving not only resolves an issue but could lead to innovation. #whatisschool
A1: At the risk of sounding like I'm saying "the end justifies the means," creative problem-solving means looking at a problem from all sides & trying various approaches to solving it. Trial & Error = mistakes often mean "try another way." Key = don't quit... #whatisschool
A1: Creative problem solving looks like students working together and questioning what has been taught and looking for the underlying “why” things happen. #whatisschool
A1 it means challenging the norm. When students push someone to really think that leads to further discussion and eventually action, then you know creative problem solving has occurred #whatisschool
Agreed. PD is seldom, if ever, differentiated. I asked a literacy leader if we could have stations at our next district PD so I could talk with/learn with some of the other Instruc Coaches on specific topics. I was told no. We ALL had to sit thru the same PD #whatisschool
A2) No longer are we a society of individual learners but an ecosystem of connected thoughts and ideas, learning from eachother. #whatisschool#cuiedtech
A2 Creative #problemsolving is important because it will help prepare Ss for their future endeavours; to succeed in their future professions, projects, personal lives, and civic duties; future-ready citizens!
#whatisschool#dtedu#deepdt#dtk12chat
A2: We are living in a world where most our problems can't be solved with a conventional method. We need to push the boundries of what is out there and what we already know. Our Ss are going to change the world #whatisschool
A2: In a connected world that is constantly changing, all citizens need to be able to adapt and change to succeed and thrive - the ability to do this is not natural - we need to help students think outside the square for solutions #whatisschool
A2 it’s important because 21st century skills require students to be problem solvers. We don’t need cookie cutter students but we need students who can take knowledge and manipulate it to solve new problems #whatisschool
A2: life is full of problems that need to be solved and if we don't let them develop the skill now, they will rely on us to fix everything for them in the future and society will collapse. #whatisschool
The 21st century worplace will not be a standardized workplace but one that needs creative solutions to unseen problems. #creativity will be a key skill along with #agility. #whatisschool
A2 Because every answer can be found on the internet! As Instruc Coach/Rdg Spec, I always ask Ts what is the purpose of their lesson. If I can find answer on the internet (which I can for just about everything), then tell me the WHY?!?! It's always problem solving! #whatisschool
i will be following the the #whatisschool tweetchat with Craig Kemp (@mrkempnz) and Laura Hill (@candylandcaper). i am excited to learn more about this!
A1: It looks different and surprises me. Its not what I may have thought would work or how I see things, but it makes sense to those solving the problem and to others. #whatisschool
#WhatIsSchool A2 need to help them develop these skills in a low risk, controlled environment where failure is not catastrophic, otherwise they will try to problem solve in the future and "kablooey"
A2: Problem-solving gives students an opportunity to look a multiple methods to solve problems and evaluate the success of those methods. They have a chance to work together, develop skills needed for employment, and learn to develop new ideas and implement them. #whatisschool
A2: Students and Teachers alike should be exposed to scenarios that require them to do something different to "the way they have always done things". Being safe and doing things the same doesn't work nowadays - be risk takers! #whatisschool
A2) If we don't teach kids how to develop problem-solving skills, they will learn by copying, We need critical thinkers for our future, and problem-solving helps students learn to critically think, so they can solve and understand what's real or fake #whatisschool
A2: Colleagues have already touched upon this but I believe it is helping children and young people to learn valuable life skills, including those needed for the world of work #whatisschool
A2 developing creativity in our students is critical to the advancement of our society. We need kids to think of things that have never been thought, make things have never been made, and prepare for a future and careers that is yet to exist #whatisschool
A2) the world and work place is changing and having people who can adapt and solve problems quickly can help change the world in amazing ways. #whatisschool
A2) content knowledge skills are easy to pick up along the way with the vast array of resources available on the net. Creative problem solving skills only come through opportunities we provide in classroom. #WhatIsSchool
A2. We have computers and AI that can solve conventional problems faster than most people. It's the lateral thinking that we need. When you experience a problem, with no obvious solution - That's when we need to get creative! #whatisschool
Yes, that is why it's important that we guide our students and then let go of the process to see what they will do and where they will go. #whatisschool
A2: Give students real-world, relatable problems, and empower them to work through them in terms that make sense to their developmental level. Allow them to explore. Allow them to fail. That's how they learn! #whatisschool
A2 problem solving and creativity are about risk- risk often means failure failure is a learning experience- the process builds confidence to persevere for solutions #whatisschool
#whatisschool
A2: Ss today don't know how to pS. Need to develop soft skills to eventually move into a professional job.Trying to teach collaboration, problem solving is not easy, but if started in early grades, better. I Have Ss in 4/5 grade that have no clue how to wk together
Because we look for what we have always done as a solution to current/future problems which will often require different thinking to create new solutions. #whatisschool
A2: In a connected world that is constantly changing, all citizens need to be able to adapt and change to succeed and thrive - the ability to do this is not natural - we need to help students think outside the square for solutions #whatisschool
A2: Whenever I went to my dad and asked him “What should I do?” His answer: I know you’ll figure it out and make the right decision! Great for creative prob solving! #lovemydad#whatisschool
A2: Students need to develop creative problem-solving skills so they are prepared for life after school. There will always be problems, so they need to face problems (not run away) & implement strategies to solve them (rather than quit, deny, or self-harm). #whatisschool
And we need to let students problem solve on their own rather than trying to solve problems for them. Let them struggle. Let them fail. Let them work it out! #whatisschool
That's the definition of insanity when you keep doing the same thing and expect a different outcome. Need to make, be the change. Understanding that taking risks can lead to failure but that does not mean the end of the line. GET BACK ON THAT HORSE! #whatisschool
Q3) Creativity should go hand in hand with problem-solving. Do you have strategies or exercises that promote a creative learning environment, culture and/or mindsets? #whatisschool
#WhatIsSchool "letting kids fail" is difficult for many Ts who think their job is to give kids the right answer... also Ts who feel they are time restricted
A2) it is important to consider all aspects in what we do. For example if Ss are designing a product,it’s not enough if it does the requirement - they need to consider- low cost, eco-friendly, culturally sensitive, sustainability and many more aspects to think about #whatisschool
that is a hard thing to do/say as Ts but SO BENEFICIAL and EFFECTIVE! We need more Ts giving Ss the ability to make decisions and problem solve #whatisschool
A2 there is a big debate about whether to push college or trades. Creative problem solving works in all environments, its needed by the blacksmith creating new works of metal and things aren't going right or those trying to figure out how to clean our oceans #whatisschool
Q3 Creativity should go hand in hand with problem solving. Do you have strategies or exercises that promote a creative learning environment, culture and/or mindsets? #whatisschool
Or environments where kids are used to EVERYTHING being handed to them and solved for them before they even realize what's going on. I definitely see that with a lot of our student population. It's setting our kids up for some real struggles. #whatisschool
Q2: Creative problem solving is not just important for "the future" of our students. They need to solve problems creatively now! #whatisschool#middleschoolchallenges
A2 creative problem solving is essential because our world is becoming ever more interconnected, faster paced and exponentially more complex - which can create some really interesting problems! #whatisschool
I would have to disagree that content knowledge skills are easy to pick up understanding and knowing knowledge is key in the creative process #Whatisschool
A3: In workshops I run I always provide time for educators to think about their context in a creative way. Activities that are hands-on and context specific are always more practical - I try to get people to push boundaries #whatisschool
A3: Giving kids certain guidelines but leaving so much open-ended to not keep kids from thinking outside of the box. Giving them time to explore, to find on their own and always go outside what is being asked. #whatisschool
A3) giving the kids access to tools they can use to create and discover new things or be able to express themselves helps boost creativity. #whatisschool
Yes and I would add not to penalize them if they fail. Failure is apart of life and it is only the beginning of working through the challenges. Start again, readjust then push through. #whatisschool
A3) Fun games, and group activities can promote a creative learning environment, or even friendly competitions in the classroom. If students see it as fun, they will enjoy learning, and If bonus points / prizes are included they will sometimes enjoy it more often #whatisschool
A1) Giving children a problem without giving any directions on how to solve it. Having the kids stay focus and finding alternative ways to solve the problem are some ways for creative problem solving. #whatisschool
A2 Creative #problemsolving is also important because it develops specific mindsets like growth mindset, human-centered mindset, experimental thinking, and taking initiative that are crucial for future success
#whatisschool#dtedu#deepdt#dtk12chat
#WhatIsSchool push learning and exploring your passions... their path will become evident, and they will have developed the skills to change paths if needed A2 #MakerCenteredLearning
A3: During a lesson I give students very little information on how to solve a problem. Students work with their group to brainstorm, apply, and evaluate their ideas. By discovering for themselves, they have a deeper understanding & feel invested in their learning. #whatisschool
A3: As a food teacher, there is a fair bit of creative thinking and problem solving that goes on. Sometimes it works…sometimes the results are ‘interesting’. #whatisschool
Craig, you'vre presence has bought out the masses today! hard to read everyones Tweets today. will you send out a link to the script so we can read thoroughly later? #whatisschool
A3) I already said my primary strategy. Give them open ended problems to solve and at my grade level there are all kinds of potential. Last year my third graders had to design and build an irrigation system to get water from the rain barrel to the strawberry patch. #whatisschool
A3 I'm in classrooms collaborating w/ Ts all day and sometimes the "materials" are few and Ss are expected to make it work...always inspiring to watch #whatisschoolhttps://t.co/7ZorvyTmSU
#whatisschool A3: I like to use choice menus that allow for creativity & open-ended. Note, this one is a work in progress. I couldn't give to many choices, I had to amend, oh the calamity! https://t.co/bns4NUUJrk
A3: Changing mindsets is critical - a lot of educators have a "this is the way I have always done it" mindset and breaking that down is the first step to helping people take risks in what they do and how they do it - I try to achieve this in my workshops #whatisschool
A3. As a maths T, starting with @joboaler style number talks demonstrates creativity for the whole class. 'As a class, how many different ways could you solve...' Some Ss need to see examples of creativity first, to help understand what it is. #whatisschool
And thinking a lot about the current work culture and the demands our students will have in the workforce - we need to start teaching to better prepare our students for what they'll face out there! #whatisschool
A2 - we have to foster creative problem solving so our Ss can adapt to the changing world around them. This makes them more competitive in the changing marketplace! #whatisschool
A3: One of my favourite problem solving activities is to give the children a number and ask them to work together to find as many ways as possible to make it. #whatIsSchool
So true. I have been lucky enough to teach 2 lessons a week to our Pre Preps developing design skills like collaboration, sharing ideas, listening to others and it has been amazing to see these little kids do this. Challenge is to ensure they continue these skills #WhatIsSchool
A3 another lesson I do, 2nd Grd. become engineers and design a community on and in a tub. Then rain makers, houses wash away. engineers and design with the materials they have a way to stop erosion, try, go to redesign and repeat. #whatisschool
A3: One of my favorite strategies is telling students to "use what you know to discover the solution/solve the problem/find the answer to what you don't know." Sometimes they go down some pretty interesting rabbit trails!🐇🐇🐇 #whatisschool
A3: I loved loved loved team building exercises that used critical thinking skills! #whatisschool I built in the standards or unit we were studying. Ss loved it when it made them think! The more challenging the better! Now I think of @breakoutEDU as a good example!
A3: As part of our Innovation classes, students find problems to solve and then ask me for the solution. My quantum computer like brain doesn’t have the solution so I say…”Nice problem. What is the first step in solving it?!” #whatisschool
And thinking a lot about the current work culture and the demands our students will have in the workforce - we need to start teaching to better prepare our students for what they'll face out there! #whatisschool
Getting unstuck and focusing on the aha moment is important too! Use the Stanford’s 30 circle challenge to teach them about getting unstuck during the creative problem-solving process.
https://t.co/F91dAguV8E#whatisschool#dtedu#deepdt#dtk12chat
A3 Ss need to engage in a productive struggle when solving a problem. This is where anchor standards help. Kids need explicit instruction in how to solve a problem before they can start coming up with solutions. I model strategies to attack problems #whatisschool
how do you teach responsibility, give them lots of it... same with everything else. the young mind is a sponge starving for knowledge and skills and wanting to explore the world. they can do great things #WhatIsSchool
A3 Ss need to engage in a productive struggle when solving a problem. This is where anchor standards help. Kids need explicit instruction in how to solve a problem before they can start coming up with solutions. I model strategies to attack problems #whatisschool
Mindset is important in problem-solving. There are many times that students believe that they are not capable of learning or solving a problem when all they need is the encouragement of a teacher or peer for them to see their own potential. #whatisschool
A4: I am a huge project and problem based learning fan. I feel students learn best when given problems to solve. This gets the creative juices flowing! #whatisschool
A4 I teach/model #designthinking to help Ss develop creative problem-solving skills; a scaffolded inquiry, solution-based process combined with set of mindsets. Gives Ss courage to bring meaningful change to people’s lives
#whatisschool#dtedu#deepdt
A3 curriculum & tests are a big mindset to break.... those two things should not be the focus. Learning soft/21st century skills in a maker environement should be and the T then weaves the content in there #WhatIsSchool
A4 Creative problem-solving is best developed in real world scenarios because that is where they will be applying this skill in the future. I design/implement real world experiences using project-based learning
#whatisschool#dtedu#deepdt
A4 Okay, I know this sounds cliche, but the classic "why." And not "why" to the point where the S gets frustrated, "why" with support and authentic research. We don't ask "why" enough. It remains the most powerful word #whatisschool
A4) student centered learning and having the teacher facilitating as the students collaborate and problem solve asking questions and the teacher asking questions to them to further their search for answers #whatisschool
A4: Asking open ended questions, station work to get them moving, & validating different methods to solving the same question. Encourage & promote multiple methods. Positive communication between Ts & Ss builds effective problem-solving skills. #whatisschool
A4 @BIE states, #PBL is a “teaching method in which Ss gain k/s by working for an extended period of time to investigate & respond to an engaging & complex ?, problem, or challenge.” Perfect pedagogy for creativeproblemsolving!
#whatisschool#pblchat
A4: Providing problems and letting students or educators go for it before setting boundaries and then breaking things down along the way. Don't set explicit boundaries immediately #whatisschool
Q3: Teach with the end in mind, but don't give to much away in the beginning. - One professor I love always used a photo or video clip to kick off class and @LibbyBeaty uses an image of artwork to inspire Ss thinking #whatisschool
A4) Making connections with the students, and letting them contribute and also ask questions along the way is an effective way to develop these skills, They need to be able to have a free voice to put together the best solution to their problem solving. #whatisschool
A4) #ProblemBasedLearning methods where it’s all student centred and having open ended problems to solve , provides opportunities to effectively develop or bring out the creative side of problem solving in students #WhatIsSchool
so much value in walking away/standing back and watching where they take it... Doing this changed my whole perspective on teaching and what was possible. #whatisschool
A4. Allow time. The first solutions are rarely the best or most creative. Brainstorm, share ideas, build on the ideas of others, allow a place for failure. Deadlines restrict risk taking #whatisschool
A4: I use a mix of explicit instruction and an inquiry based approach. Some of the safety/tech skills require explicit instruction and then inquiry takes over. Student’s develop their own pathways of learning. #whatisschool
A4: I think I might have answered this with my response to Q3, but I'd like to add that, whenever possible, the problems we try to solve are relevant and real-world-based. #whatisschool
A4 try and get Ss utilize prior knowledge and connect what they know with what they need to do. Sometimes Ss look at tasks as unfamiliar and then struggle. Start by having them ask ”have a seen a problem like this before” &”what are my go to strategies?” #whatisschool
A4: This year I have tried to make math more relevant then ever! I have tried to get the creative juices flowing for my Ss to authentically engage with the material. We just planned a Birthday Party for our class in our Ratios and Proportions Unit! #whatisschool
A4: If you set explicit boundaries or rules immediately you will get what you always have had. When making a box, we don't want 24 that are the same - allow for creativity in an activity or task #whatisschool
Q4 #whatisschool NEWSreal life "suffering challenges" globally ( #whatisschool global so a lot of sharing could happen)
how to build better (natural disaster
how to provide better (food shortage
how to conserve better
how to defend better
how earn better
how to empathize better
A1 - creative problem solving looks like dozens of iterations to figure out the best solution to difficult problems. It is leveraging relationships to pick their insights and brains to help....and its learning about everyone else's success/failures to avoid repeats. #whatisschool
That’s great to hear! I remember as a kid always asking “Why are we learning this?” “What is the point?” Design authentic learning experiences! #WhatIsSchool
#whatisschool A4: These tweets are so fast!! Student-centered class where they are discovering a solution to something even if not correct. I think Ss designing something in a Coding App lends itself to this as well.
Students should have a voice in assessment design + that means breaking ourselves of the notion that to assess common skills everyone must be doing a common assessment. With so many ways to reach an end result, it's imperative that students have a say early on. #whatisschool
A2 why solve a problem that someone else has already solved? There are too many tough problems in the world to waste energy reinventing the wheel. All worthwhile/engaging efforts charts new territory. #whatisschool
yes!! and identifying problems / articulating them/ recognizing they are problems/
Q4 #whatisschool
can be as simple as one's school overcrowded, security issues, etc real time
A3 Ss need to engage in a productive struggle when solving a problem. This is where anchor standards help. Kids need explicit instruction in how to solve a problem before they can start coming up with solutions. I model strategies to attack problems #whatisschool
I have to run to class but SO many great contributions & new PPL to follow all around the world. Thanks for sharing everyone! Thanks @mrkempnz & @davidleeedtech#whatisschool
A5) creating a lab or experiment on a topic that requires students to work together to solve a problem without telling them how to solve it letting the students creativity take them to the answers they may be looking to find for the assignment #whatisschool
A5) I would LOVE to have my students start #GenuisHour I haven't been able to work out the timing yet, but I've seen others do it and I want to try. #whatisschool
I would also include maybe not use the box, there are other ways that the solution could be done. Rather than always writing a descriptive paragraph, how else can this be done to express the same solution? #whatisschool
A3 - Good PBL accomplishes this well if (a) you force lots of iterations (b) you don't define an end product/result (c) you pick challenging real world problems that pros struggle with. #whatisschool
A5 Here’s a playlist of videos of standards-based projects that I’ve done that required students to creatively problem solve to develop solutions to real world challenges
#whatisschoolhttps://t.co/nDlxLcfUx8
A5) I've mentioned two but. I teamed up with the GRT I introduced rapidly multiplying snails into the fish tank. The second graders had to research and come up with the best solution, environmentally friendly to control the snail population. #whatisschool
A5: Promote creative problem solving through open-ended questions & have Ss explore different ways of solving problems. Challenge them to come up with 2 or more ways & have them talk about their ideas. I want to learn about other ways to promote problem-solving. #whatisschool
#WhatIsSchool a big reason why I saw there are TOO many content standards per class/subject , let's learn things well and deeply so that we actually remember them and can use them
In reply to
@gilmour_mike, @davidwbeaty, @mrkempnz
A5) As a student, I have thought of some creative problem-solving tools to use in a classroom, but I have not done any yet. I do want to try to problem-solve different science experiments, letting my students try to find a solution to why an experiment worked or not #whatisschool
A4: I agree with making it relevant and tied to real-world scenarios. Watching teachers in their classrooms this month I’ve noticed Ss highly focused and engaged when lessons implement this strategy! They can connect!
A5: Also did the same thing with 2nd Grd and the aquarium PH fluctuations and the algae. The PH one was cool, they put in a predetermined about of seashells but the PH went too high. Took a couple attempts over weeks to get it balanced. #whatisschool
i loved giving time to kids to experiment and try things differently. i remember a physics lab group that did the experiment four times b/c they forgot something each time or things didnt work out #WhatIsSchool
In reply to
@gilmour_mike, @davidwbeaty, @mrkempnz
A5) we have a NZ wide schools project called @123tech_nz which heavily emphasises on collaboration and creative problem solving a challenge. Alternatively when I teach Robotics , I provide a lot of junk bits to students to come out with their own robot designs #WhatIsSchool
We gleaned 5 consistent practices by the world's super creatives that can be useful to inform the creation/design of learning environments that support the most important habits/processes required for success. --->https://t.co/m5s2LZ17Ep#whatisschool
My @Skyline_WC peer tutors have worked with local universities, schools + non-profits to run Family Fun Nights for K-8 students to close achievement gaps. They've built awesome relationships + put on great events! Now they;'re training others! Awesome experience! #whatisschool
A5: Yes! Some of our upcoming chemistry projects include solving the problems of polluted water, carbon-based fuels, treating & curing cancer, genetically-modified foods, and even crime-solving. #whatisschool
A5. I try to design most projects to enable creativity. Redesign the campus (ratios &area), Miniature robot (volume & S.A.), Plan a trip (financial lit.), Raise awareness (stats) #whatisschool
Q4 - You want the polarity of energy flow to come from students' intrinsic motivation. However, one thing you can be absolutely top-down & rigid about: Sacred time and space, use of protocols and having the right people on the team. You do this, then magic happens. #whatisschool
Every week my students engage in an "Application" that stretches them just beyond what they've been taught. Looking for patterns, experimenting, etc....are all expected and rewarded. The correct answer is worth little. It's what they TRY that earns a grade! #whatisschool
There's a lot to be said for how we allocate time in a classroom + I'd argue it's probably a place where many of us could be more intentional. How teachers think about time is a significant barrier to implementing more student-led, student-centered learning. #whatisschool
In reply to
@shirky17, @gilmour_mike, @davidwbeaty, @mrkempnz
#whatisschool A5: Great idea, I started a small mini makerspace in my room as well, its amazing how little Ss know how to collaborate and problem solve. I like seeing what they come up with - sometimes very interesting....
A5: I am currently collaborating with our social studies T to create a financial lit unit where Ss have jobs and bills to pay and need to make choices on how to spend their money #whatisschool
A6) in order for teachers to effectively teach the students creative problem solving skills and being a reliable source for the students they must have the skills themselves. #whatisschool
I find that some Ts think the project is done at the end (RUSHED) instead of learning content/skills THROUGH the project at the START of the unit. #WhatIsSchool
There's a lot to be said for how we allocate time in a classroom + I'd argue it's probably a place where many of us could be more intentional. How teachers think about time is a significant barrier to implementing more student-led, student-centered learning. #whatisschool
In reply to
@shirky17, @gilmour_mike, @davidwbeaty, @mrkempnz
A6) Yes! If teachers do not have the skills, then how could they teach their students the same skills? Teachers also need these skills to help the students solve their questions, and understand problems as well. #whatisschool
yes, i think they are stuck thinking about time as "i have 120 content standards to get through by X date so they are prepared for the test" - never realizing that will not prepare Ss for anything #WhatIsSchool
In reply to
@MrAustinA2, @gilmour_mike, @davidwbeaty, @mrkempnz
A6: I believe it is important to use creative problem-solving techniques to develop a deeper understanding for our subject material, more than teaching a set standard! It also gives the student ownership of their learning and develops a life-long skill. #whatisschool
A6) I believe it is very important for teachers to have creative problem-solving skills. First we need to model the behaviors (especially for littles) also, so we can become more effective teachers! #whatisschool
A6) in order for teachers to effectively teach the students creative problem solving skills and being a reliable source for the students they must have the skills themselves. #whatisschool
Good teachers need to have either a) good problem solving skills or b) the humility to ask for help. As long as the problem gets solved, it shouldn't matter who solved it. #whatisschool
#WhatIsSchool A6 everyone has their own type of creative problem solving (just like everything)--- the Q is does your school culture allow it to come out or does the culture block it from surfacing
A6: Absolutely!!! Teachers have to work with so many different personalities in so many different situations! Not only students but admin, colleagues, parents, etc. Relying on creative prob solving is an everyday occurrence!! #whatisschool
A6: Yes - if they want to both survive and excel in their profession! But I believe any teacher truly worth his/her salt is already doing this on a daily basis!😁 Think about it - teachers have about 30 new and unique problems walking through the door every day! #whatisschool
A6) it’s a skill that develops with time and introspection. Reflective teaching practices enable teachers to go back and look at missed opportunities in providing creative PBL tasks. So answer is Yes, and this helps them improve their teaching practice #WhatIsSchool
A6, teachers need to have creative problem solving skills and understand what they are, many use them every day and don't realize it. Many won't introduce something into their classroom they are not comfortable with. #whatisschool
A6: It is important for Ss to see Ts going through the creative problem solving process. Model it in our classroom. Talk about how you solved a recent problem. Let kids know you go through the same thing #whatisschool
A6: As teachers (adults?) it's easy to not practice what we preach, but it's so important for us to model #creativeproblemsolving among many other things. We also need to show that we use #creativeproblemsolving in all areas of life #whatisschool
A6 It’s essential! Modeling these skills for Ss will help develop these skills and gain a better understanding of how to apply these skills into authentic learning experiences. #whatisschool
Right! Framing time around content coverage is an adult-centered move (it's often linear, can be rooted in compliance-based assessment, etc.), but thinking about time as variable + dependent on student needs, interests + skills is a good student-centered step. #whatisschool

A6 - three things schools & many teachers struggle w (a) iteration and (b) calibration w authentic/real world usable solutions (c) leveraging real world out-of-school relationships. PBL projects led by teachers who don't have these skills look like poor hobby crafts #whatisschool
Please help me thank @davidleeedtech for leading today's #whatisschool chat with me - Connect & follow him - he is brilliant and if you need professional learning on any of this in your school, he is your man!

Its been a blast but I have other things calling me. One, my border collie, two. @RescueMeHART is running a contest to help my @donorschoose project get funded and I have some thank yous to write. Enjoy the weekend folks. #whatisschool
Thank you both for hosting! Great to jump in and start the morning inspired! Now, time to get through the day and then jet off to Singapore tonight! #whatisschool
A6--true problem-solving is a very NON-LINEAR messy process. You don't know what paths you need to take or what paths end up dead ends. The work simply is to explore and to figure out--even if it means you only have a map of what not to try. #whatisschool
#WhatIsSchool what does Blended Learning call for... thinking about Path Place and Pace? ( i prefer the P's of Mitchel Resnick Play, Passion, Peers , Projects) #WhatIsSchool

Without some creative problem solving skills, I'd also imagine it would be difficult for a teacher to truly differentiate their class for student needs + interests. Students will need different things at different times throughout their learning. #whatisschool

A2 Ss need to discover there are multiple ways of solving problems & often it requires Ss to use different perspectives. Ss need to be challenged to think outside the box #whatisschool

Truer words were never spoken. I'm trying to create a triangle with teachers: project-based learning, disciplinary literacies + authentic experiences for students beyond the classroom. Students need nourishing learning, not empty calorie "dessert projects." #whatisschool
