A1 topics deforestation the drug war, NAFTA, U.S. Cuba relations P canal, migration issues, & effects of European colonization
A1 From a history teacher's POV, it seems US imperialism is a must to review and discuss.
Just lurking tonight...trying to catch up on some academic reading at the same time!
A1 cont. Going to have to spend a little bit more time exploring Brazil this year.
A1: Getting our U.S. students to understand the history & size of Latin America would be; I feel it's often forgotten about.
A1 Migration of people, deforestation, impact of development on people & nature
Hey Bill! Hope your week is going well!
Thanks Ed, likewise yours.
Hello ! Sorry for being tardy! Jessica from IL, 7th gr World Geo.
A1: Spatial inequality, HEI, historic impact on culture/current society
Agreed! The impact of imperialism/colonialism has really shaped Latin America. https://t.co/1MxgGFILVd
A1 From a history teacher's POV, it seems US imperialism is a must to review and discuss.
Musically/culturally Latin America has 3subregions: Northern, Central, &Southern. Musically The Caribbean is it's own region.
A1 4 middle schoolers: Qs about...
Water
Language
Latin culture in US society
Difference between SouthAmerica+LatinAmerica
yes, definitely have had a ton of Brazil in the news recently!
And to understand the diversity. Too often society over generalizes and makes them one group of people https://t.co/y4uha2Paci
A1: Getting our U.S. students to understand the history & size of Latin America would be; I feel it's often forgotten about.
Cool! Anything good? Always looking for new recommendations!
Latin America is not one of my areas of expertise so I am ready to learn.
Welcome Jessica! When does Latin America fall in your order of units in 204?
A1 If I were teaching , I'd spend time on Darwin and his Voyage in the Beagle. He collected so much from LA.
A1: another high interest topic for Ss is the black market in Latin Am ... due to proximity to Mexico, it's relevant
A1 blending of 3 cultures- Europe, Africa, Indigenous and the impacts each made on LA as a whole
migration is a great one. How do you initiate that convo?
I like that spatial inequality idea!
What artists do you feel are must includes in a Latin America unit Jason?
Teaching by blending continents. Love it https://t.co/06z7hddOXn
A1 blending of 3 cultures- Europe, Africa, Indigenous and the impacts each made on LA as a whole
A1: We focus on migration, but I'd love to incorporate so much more!
Joining in for the first time with an invite from Excited to lurk and learn!
- I love teaching about reggaeton music ... it's a perfect example of cultural convergence
When I was in Colombia, the Ss there all asked about what Americans thought of their peace agreement - sadly, we didnt know!
Definitely. Ss could compare how this played out in other regions of the world as well
what spatial inequalities are you talking about?
We start with North Am, then move south! We are usually in Cent. and S. Am around Dec/Jan! How about y'all?
How do you deal w/ spatial inequality Lisa?
welcome to Valerie!! First experience! Let's give her a big welcome and some follows!!
Northern#1: Tejano (TexMex) music in Texas. Conjunto style = spanish + waltzes/polkas influences. https://t.co/f0Zhf4Z80T
FARQ is not on most Ss radar unfortunately
Yes unfortunately this hasn't been something we have covered What did the schools you visited study about the US
I have a file showing the spread of Spanish and Portuguese cities by year
We look at lots of thematic maps, listen to interviews, read articles/essays. The students journal about the process
The schools in Colombia wanted to know why ALL Americans loved Trump. Lots of diffusing that thought.
I was curious about what cities/inequalities you focused on. ;)
Welcome Valerie! So glad to have you join us!
my playlist is going to cover some main styles. And there is always room to dig deeper and wider.
Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro mostly, but there was a great NYTimes piece about children in New York too.
definitely an opportunity to compare to other migration patterns too!
Oh that sounds fabulous. I really need to spend more time with google earth!
With my pacing we don’t get to Latin Am until April :( I’m jealous you get longer to teach it
A2 In Colombia, there are - Native American, African, & European. But, they don't see race, they see Colombians!
love that you tie it back to a city in the US and make it relevant/personal to Ss
I was considering Selena(s) ;)
A2: I love our Food Truck PBL bc Ss can see that not all Latin Am food is the same ... really goes into cultural elements
Northern#2: Huapango: Mexican folk dance & music style, from the indigenous Huastec ppl. of Mexico. https://t.co/2ZPnl9oQLI
Where are your go to sources for your interviews, articles, & essays? Are you using digital journals?
A2 learning about diversity starts with asking Qs. 6th graders love to brainstorm Qs about differences/similarities
A2: I’ve been lucky to have students with diverse backgrounds. Plus I studied abroad in 3 countries in LatAm. Lots of stories
But, I had family members ask "which part of Mexico is Colombia in?" Apparently all Latinos are the same???
A2: We try to break up the regions: N/Cent/S and pull in as many resources (art, photog, music) as poss. within regions
It usually is May when we start as it is our last unit. :(
I will try to post the file after I check on my sick toddler
Me too! Was sharing Google Mymaps ideas w/ my SS dept this AM
way to a Ss heart/mind is through their stomachs
We need to do better at getting there! Can't cover it all in 2 weeks!
- our Ts really enjoy the judging aspect of the project ... we get more volunteers every time!
A2 introduce it as blending strength over time- revolts against colonial powers. lasting impacts= food/ clothing/ agri/ music
Sorry - screen is blurry and migraine is worsening. The Qs will keep coming, but I'm tapping out of our chat. :(
Ok, just looked back at last yr's calendar: started C.Am in Feb, finished S. Am end of April
that's awesome! Could you share the lesson? or blog about it?
Hope you feel better Chris! It will be a fun surprise when a new question is posted! :)
Bummer. Get well soon, Chris.
Lurking and learning tonight!

This is great Jessica! Thanks for sharing!
Ss find the person hanging upside down fascinating.
I saw a mariachi competition in San Antonio during the tcss a couple years ago. It was amazing!
I need to do more connecting w/ experts as well as students living in the countries we study.
A4: that's not too difficult for me ... most of my Ss are children/grandchildren of Latin Am. immigrants (me too!)
this is so rich in great details. You could analyze for hours
- the mariachis at our school used to serenade Ts with Las Mananitas on their bdays
This is gr8 Jessica! I haven't seen Knoema before! Usually 4 data I've used CIA Factbook Always happy to add!
A4: Global Geography Exchange: students write letters/create projects about their communities https://t.co/t31jjHMC9H
A4 need to take advantage of the stories of our Hispanic population at school. They have stories to share that Ss need to hear
- have them retell the stories of their families ... interviewing family members will allow them to connect
This is really cool Lisa. I haven't seen it before. How long have you done this?
Southern#2: Argentine Tango - From Spanish/African influences style mastered by Astor Piazzolla https://t.co/JnDWr4kFde

still haven't delved into PBL, but you ideas always make me want to do it tomorrow!
A5: there's some resources from UT called Hemispheres (whole units) - migration, geothermal energy, etc ... I'll add a link
Definitely has been a bunch of new materials on that lately.
A4 connect something personal.fave coffee, music style, dance, clothing, etc. all diffused. Lat Am is HUGE cultural juggernaut

A5 Ive done campaign speeches to address some of the issues in the region
A5 Last year I did a QR code scavenger hunt all about the Panama Canal
A5 origin and diffusion of coffee and other plantation crops using maps
A5 I've used the stories of MLB players who defected to the U.S. to highlight the troubles in Cuba
A5: I did a for the cultures of different indigenous groups last year. Want to expand it this year
What types of natural disasters are they covering? How do they present their plans?
- that sounds fascinating! I should be getting my box soon!
would you mind sharing? I might be able to make that topic work in AP Human Geo
Do you address the special immigration status Cubans have?
Southern#3b: Brazil -Salvador de bahia. African/Native music mixed with carnival street music. https://t.co/jUy7kdHuO1
Totally forgot I did a Breakout Edu for Cuba last year. Need to use our schools Breakout kits more. Awesome stuff!
Very cool! I'm in for anything that includes coffee. Mmmmmmm my fav!
that is a great way to add more depth and context to the region.
- Ss pick disasters (most pop) ... complete the project in 3 phases (prep, shelter/evac, & recovery)
- sure ... I'll add it to a PBL folder that will also include the Food Truck one too
Yes. That is discussed yet not as in depth as I would like to ususally.
- they're presenting their entire plan to professionals - NWS, architects & engineers
A6 I use Cuba and US relations to discuss capitalism v communism in my HS online class.
Is this your 1st PBL unit of the year Ashley or do you do ones that precede it?
A4... Music makes everything personal. We r hard wired for it.
WOW! That is so cool. Do they have experts as mentors too?
- this is the 1st one ... moving onto social protests in some classes & NFL team designs in another
Southern#3c: Afro-Brazilian, capoeira never played w/o music. Disguised slaves martial arts training. https://t.co/v8iU2Mk3gT

A6 Note to self more Breakout edu, definitely start building in PBL, and add Knoema app
- BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA ... that's too funny!
Before we go, does anyone have any ideas for future topics? We have a nice list started yet always looking to add on

Let me find them and share them with you.
A6: More fine arts and VR! We can't physically go there, so we'll let our senses lead the way.
- I'm loving this round of playlists!
Well thank you all for the great ideas and resources. I will definitely be ending the year w/ a bang this year
