We welcome all educators to join #AppleEDUchat every Tuesday. Our ADEs host chats from both Europe and the Americas with an incredible lineup of topics to spark conversation. Share your ideas & stories and connect with this global community. Join at 6pm PST or 9pm EST.
Tonight's #AppleEDUchat is about how our students show what they know in math. Whether or not you teach math, consider our conversation about how your students capture their understanding and share it with others.
A1. Stop Motion videos, Screencasting to explain ideas in Bio and Chem. (Also Math!) Allows me to see their thinking and ID their misconceptions so I can help them better understand! #AppleEDUchat
Haven't had a chance to use it yet but I just learned some awesome things about Ls creating stop motion animation to share their learning. I've done it myself and it really forces you to break down what you know! #AppleEDUchat
A1 - Students use a sweet Canadian app called @Freshgrade to capture their learning into very cool portfolios. "Digital Artifacts" is the new lingo :) @explainevrythng also just can't get more perfect...can it? #AppleEDUChat
A1: My students have started using Seesaw to take pictures of what they've done. It's uploaded into their digital portfolios and parents can view them. #AppleEDUchat
A1 they use it to explain their thinking and connections made in class. They use photos to make inferences and observations and ask questions. #AppleEDUchat
A1: take the photos and videos and add another dimension to them by adding them to @BookCreatorApp to create remarkable learning journals. #AppleEDUchat
A1: We love using the camera on iPads to capture student work so we can talk about it live during class! @Nearpod also helps with workflow to encourage discourse. More ideas here! https://t.co/LFnyphxIRj#appleeduchat
I use iMotion or Stop Motion Studio on the iPad. I have found iMotion to be easier. Check out Youtube for 5 easy to follow videos. here is the first one: https://t.co/kjlOePJraC#AppleEDUchat
A1: explain everything is our go to app for that. However, our 6th grade has new iPads, so I’ve been showing how they can use clips to do this too. #appleeduchat
Megan, instructional coach from IL. Stopping by #AppleEDUchat for a bit this evening to check out more ideas for showing what you know in math. Hi everyone!
Clips is an amazing tool for empowering voice! Do you have any examples to share? I love seeing what other teachers and students are creating! #AppleEDUchat
A1: Photos to tell a story #petchakucha style. Identifying objects on a scavenger hunt related to content. Videos to capture an explanation, showcase a creation or to share new knowledge. #AppleEDUchat
A1: as a flipped classroom advocate I am now transferring the role of being a content creator to my students by asking them to make math videos with me. I am using video to help freshmen students learn from the seniors through our math videos #appleeduchathttps://t.co/NJzEBg8Vk2
A1 Simplest example I’ve seen is students sharing a picture of the paper they used to work out a problem. Can show others how it’s done, or ask for help if they went wrong somewhere. #AppleEDUchat
#Classroomclips @ @flipgrid are current classroom faves where Ss share reading choices through book commercials. In the past, they've created/manipulated videos in iMovie to demonstrate an understanding of literary adaptation & how dramatic changes impact meaning. #appleeduchat
don't forget the built in recording of iOS11. Turn anything into a video on the iPad. Keynote animations, Notes drawings, annotating an image... #AppleEDUchat
A1: My students love making trailers using iMovie for novels we’ve read in class and for their own short stories. They mainly use photos with Clips to show their understanding of a concept. #appleeduchat
A1: Talked about multiplication, equal groups, and arrays with Ss. Went on an array scavenger hunt to take photos of arrays with our iPads. Found examples and non examples around the school. #AppleEDUchat
A1: I am working on a project with my Math3 students on conic sections. They will take photos of “conics” around them. They will make a poster out of the printed photos and compute for the equation of their conics. #appleeduchat
A1: My students are currently working on a project where they find the height of an object using shadows. I have them take pictures of them measuring the shadows before doing the calculations. #AppleEDUchat#EDT520
A2: I absolutely love @explainevrythng for this. Seeing a kid’s answer is good. Hearing a kid explain is better. Seeing an answer being constructed as a student explains it is amazing. We can truly understand a kid’s thinking. #AppleEDUchat
Hey gang! Sorry I’m late to the party! A1-Students created @TouchCastEdu videos documenting their scientific investigations and practicing vocabulary through oral presentation skills #AppleEDUchat
That's great! Many of my students have made their own screencasts/tutorials that I can make available to other students so that they can learn from them, too. We learn the most by teaching, after all. #AppleEDUchat
A2 - I'm having some success this year capturing student voice and understanding in Math using #MinecraftEDU and of course Pocket Edition which, I still believe is the number one seller in the iOS app store for games? For good reason! #AppleEDUChat
The "Draw It" feature of @Nearpod is so valuable for visualizing math in class! Ss can literally draw on the screen OR submit a photo taken using the iPad. Great for Ss who still prefer to do work on paper, and all voices are "heard"! #AppleEDUchat
A2: #appleeduchat in my college online class, I require my students to send their “video introduction” using their phone or any mobile device. This helps me get to know them in a personal level rather than just names in my roster.
We have found these video tutorials to be very helpful for parents in MS. Students create them so parents can better understand new strategies.#AppleEDUChat
A2: We use @AdobeSpark, iMovie, Clips, and even Toostastic to create visual math problems and share the math movies in @Flipgrid -just showed several teachers today how to do it #AppleEDUChat
In reply to
@MrsKemper, @teacherforest, @AdobeSpark, @Flipgrid
A2: My students and I ❤️ to use @Seesaw, @Flipgrid, Apple Clips, and using the screen recording option on iPads. Best tools ever for my ELLs! #AppleEDUchat#studentvoice
A2. Screen record on the iPad-voice and see as they write. @padlet when I want them to share with everyone. New drawing tool is amazing for that! #AppleEduChat
Exactly.. teaching is learning TWICE and this is the best way to trick them in to thinking they are not doing math when in fact they’re learning math. #appleeduchat
It is the immediacy of interacting with the content - whether it is image, graph, text, or other media #AppleEDUChat Flexible and elicits personal response
A2: My students and I ❤️ to use @Seesaw, @Flipgrid, Apple Clips, and using the screen recording option on iPads. Best tools ever for my ELLs! #AppleEDUchat#studentvoice
A3. Creativity comes in so many forms. We try to coach our teachers to broaden their assignments and expand their rubrics. Include a creativity component but don't dictate how they get creative...(that is the opposite of student creativity) #AppleEDUchat
A3: my ss in AP statistics are excited in their first academic competition outside of Barstow. The statistical applications they learned in my class is what they are using on their poster and research paper in competing against other high schools in SoCal #AppleEDUChat
A3 my students created their own mini theme park to explain animal adaptations. They also created podcasts to explain how technology helps man and the world. #AppleEDUchat
A3: I give my studentsthe option of how they want to demonstrate their learning. They can use clips, Keynote, iMovie, etc... I think letting them choose the tool, gets more buy in from them. Choice is good. #AppleEDUchat
A3: I’m also a fan of giving #jonsmithclass a task to complete with no rubric. Create _____ that demonstrates your understanding. I don’t care how you do it, just do it. I love this method because then I’m not watching 20 of the same thing. #AppleEDUchat
A2 My Ss use @BookCreatorApp to add voice recordings to explain & go beyond their text on each page, & @Flipgrid for the authentic interaction~ it allows Ss, to initiate conversations w/ each other to advance their ideas. #AppleEduChat
In reply to
@MrsKemper, @teacherforest, @BookCreatorApp, @Flipgrid
A3: Challenging my students to write songs/raps to help remember algebraic properties was fun and creative. They never forgot the Commutative Property song! #AppleEDUchat
A3: Last year some of our 7th graders used @ScratchJr on the iPads as part of a geometry review. They brought in examples and definitions to show what they know. #AppleEDUchat
A3- I love having Ss mix hands-on with tech to bring our their creativity! Like physically building circuits on a snap board, taking a pic and annotating on the iPad, then using the graphics in a video through which Ss explain their learning! #AppleEDUchat
A3: Chatterpix. I'm working on ISTE-T cert and I showed my Ss how to make the playground equipment talk with Chatterpix. They thought it was funny. #AppleEDUchat
OMG how FUN! Have had Ss write "Math Carols" and perform them. Gave them lists of vocab words to include. Can you hear it now? "GE-O-ME-TRY GE-O-ME-TRY" sung to the tune of "Oh Christmas Tree"?!? Ha! #AppleEDUchat
A3 - I have some girls working now on the iPad Pro designing art canvas prints to teach our student population about the Sustainable Development Goals! Project UTOPIA - Understanding Technology's Overall Purpose in Art! #SDGs#TeachSDGs#AppleEDUChat
For me, the creativity can come in when we ask students to decide for themselves how to show what they know. Do they want to use words, images, videos, movies, music... and better yet... The choice becomes part of the creative process. #AppleEDUchat#personalizedlearning
A3: I had learners create a learning portfolio of their work in Algebra 1. I used this in lieu of a final. It was still comprehensive and they were able to revisit their learning in a creative way. I wasn't able to do it digitally in that district but I could now! #AppleEDUchat
A3: I’m helping a class do stop motion, but for all the scenes where the characters talk, they use chaterpix. And yes that’s a music stand to set the iPad on. #AppleEDUchat
I’ve used the green-screen pizza box method for stop-motion where the bottom of the box has green paper and the top is against the back of a chair/wall with the iPad/phone mounted for an easy view #AppleEDUChat
A4 I love google apps docs and slides make learning very collaborative + feedback is so seamless. It helps a lot of stuff can be integrated. #AppleEDUchat
A4: Unfortunately, my students are too young for technology collaboration but I do like using Google Docs to work with my colleagues on lesson plans, pacing guides, etc. #AppleEDUchat
#appleeduchat A3 - I love using video and audio to have students show the research and storytelling techniques that we worked through in class. For example filming a short movie after teaching a unit on the hero's journey.
A4: I want to get more Ls using #googlekeep as a collaboration tool. With the shared lists, tags, and comments it's a great bulletin board for group organization and research. #AppleEDUchat
A4 - Hands down without a single doubt the best tool for all classrooms for student demonstration of what they know in collaborative ways is #MinecraftEDU! I'd love to give a demo in July! #AppleEDUChat
A4: Love seeings students not necessarily collaborate through the same app, but really working as a team to do paired programming with @SpheroEdu or problem solving with Digital @breakoutEDU#AppleEDUchat
Maybe look at collaboration differently. When we do our #twima projects we all collaborate to write a global book. Each kid makes a page and we out together. Different than real time collaboration but it’s collaboration. We’ve had kids k-12 do these. #AppleEDUchat
#appleeduchat Recently it has been @Flipgrid but I have been a fan of using online platforms for video and podcast creation to build their content and then share what they learned. Collective essays are also a great way to see knowledge gained.
A4- Fav “tool” for Ss collaboration is any video creation app. Ss must engage in content-specific dialogue, make creative decisions together, and allow one another to contribute in many different ways. That’s the essence of collaboration! #AppleEDUchat
A4 This runs the range of anything from a basic smartphone video to a slideshow/video combination app like Knovio, to full on screen recording programs like Screencast-O-Matic #AppleEDUchat
YES! It's so amazing watching students create the PRODUCT but also work toward excellence together through the PROCESS of creating the videos! #AppleEDUchat
Rich collaboration can happen even if final product is not a collaboration tool. I’ve had large groups of Ss create 1 book in iBooksAuthor. They work on content in smaller teams and all add to the final product. Working through the process creates the collaboration. #AppleEDUchat
A4- I like the Google Suite tools for collaboration, but many times it looks the same as individual work when students only work together “online” through mutual docs. I want Ss to talk and have conversations with one another! #AppleEDUchat
A4: Padlet has been a great tool for sharing and collaboration. Check out our vocabulary activity for English words derived from Latin #AppleEDUchathttps://t.co/epP3Mg7hJD
I am new to Google Classroom this year, so I do not know what the question feature is. Students do post public comments occasionally, but they are more questions to me than each other. #AppleEDUchat#EDT520
We made @ScratchJr math games for the younger students. The 5th graders planned & created the games & beta tested for each other & made adjustments b4 younger SS played #AppleEDUchat
A5: Share your work using @Flipgrid@BookCreatorApp#AppleEDUchat Allow students the opportunity for someone other than their teacher to review their work. Join the twima projects.
Allowing Ss the choice & voice as the conduit to their presentation speaks volumes for your respect for your Ss. Show them ways to present, step back, let them develop/design & then demonstrate their mastery! #AppleEduChat
A4: I also love to see Ss creating paper slide (super slide) videos! Collaboration, cooperation, and investigation. https://t.co/g1UUvS1oi0#AppleEDUchat
#appleeduchat A5- Honestly teaching to be digital citizens and the importance and proper ways to publish their writing, videos, etc. If we engaged them with the real applications of the classroom products, then we encourage greater audience participation.
A5: I worked with a teacher who had her class create ePubs with book creator on animals they were researching. When the ePubs were done, we posted the books on a Google site. This way other students, family and friends could download their books. #AppleEDUchat
A5 - News Reporters are desperate for local news and schools can work very nicely with these hardworking professionals to showcase and highlight student work in ways that benefit community and the students.....and yes... the major media outlets too! #AppleEDUChat
A5 in our junior to senior high we have this program called “day of ideas” where we ask our students to pitch their passion projects to potential and interested investors. They can pledge or support. #AppleEDUchat
A5: Blogs, Podcasts, YouTube.. the options are endless, easy, and essential to engagement. Nobody wants their work seen by only one person. #AppleEDUchat
A5: As much as we all love our favorite tools, exposing them to new digital ways of expressing themselves will expand their audience and perhaps they will find a way that encourages them to share without provocation or prompting. #AppleEDUchat
Want to join #twima 8? Click the link below. We all have a story to tell. Share your story. All kids, teachers, parents, people welcome. #AppleEDUchathttps://t.co/mts2k7mAuQ
A5: #AppleEDUChat I have always encouraged my students to experience what I do from making math videos to writing research paper. My existing platform in YT and https://t.co/gPCk0iPIE3 have been my tool to let my Ss share what they can do in math education.
Love this idea! Did you find that the quality of student work improved, since they knew they were creating their ePubs for a wider audience? #AppleEDUchat
A5 we use @Seesaw to share our learning with peers and families! I see more students looking through completed projects during free time than any other app! 💜#appleeduchat
A5- Step 1: use Twitter to find a teacher with whom to connect. Step 2: decide on a topic. Step 3: use video (a- or synchronous) to connect Ss. Step 4: let the Ss get creative! It’s easy when kids are excited to share and learn with others!! #AppleEDUchat
A5 It may not be an option to everyone, but all those pics, videos, and projects could be shared on social media. It can also be a place to go for help and ideas - as we know firsthand there’s a large community of educators out there. #AppleEDUchat
A5: Ss have loved adding videos to @Flipgrid or connecting through lessons with @Penpalschools Also, sharing work to a classroom blog or having student media reporters create a piece to share with a wider audience. #AppleEDUchat
A5: learners are able to share their knowledge with their family through apps such as SeeSaw. I have also paired my class up with other classes in the world to share their digital books on new their knowledge. #AppleEDUchat
A5: If Ss use apps that are meant to be shared like #classroomclips we can share their work on social media and share the compliments the work receives back w the Ss. #appleclips#AppleEduChat
A5 we use @Seesaw to share our learning with peers and families! I see more students looking through completed projects during free time than any other app! 💜#appleeduchat
You bring up an excellent point, Alfonso! Empowering student "voice" can look and sound differently, and honoring their individuality and creativity is so important! :-) #AppleEDUchat
For collaboration, my students and I use @Seesaw note... I post a quote for Ss and they all collaborate in developing a literary analysis by passing the iPads around to add their perspective and provide feedback. #AppleEDUchat
A5: #appleeduchat I use my students testimonials in my class to encourage teachers and students in the Philippines to be content creators through making math videos in their own classroom. every chance I get, I always bring my students in my presentation https://t.co/8pcPSUN2Tb
We also have #PresentationDays where the students get to choose an item from @Seesaw to share with their classmates. The peers give the feedback 2 compliments & 1 wish! #AppleEDUchat
A4: For collaboration, my students and I use @Seesaw note... I post a quote for Ss and they all collaborate in developing a literary analysis by passing the iPads around to add their perspective and provide feedback. #AppleEDUchat
A6: I forgot about the screen recording feature on iOS 11, I already emailed that idea out, along with directions, to my staff, thanks for the reminder! #AppleEDUchat
We also have #PresentationDays where the students get to choose an item from @Seesaw to share with their classmates. The peers give the feedback 2 compliments & 1 wish! #AppleEDUchat
Absolutely! Even our kindergarten students were excited to publish a book they made to help Pre-K students learn how to write letters. https://t.co/3q9G5RSxLS#appleeduchat
A6: I feel stuck in a rut with how I ask Ls to reflect and share what they know. I definitely feel encouraged to be more adventurous with how I approach this in lesson design. #AppleEDUchat
A6: #appleeduchat thank you @MrsKemper and awesome @mathycathy for hosting tonight’s #adechat. My take away from this chat is my renewed drive on thinking of more ways to utilize my students in sharing their math skills to a wider audience through the platform that I have.
6) Student Choice, Robotics for Student Collaboration, Student videos to show you what they know, collaborating with friends online always leads to more learning! #AppleEDUchat
A6: Giving students CHOICES in how they show what they know in math can also empower student voice and creativity! Math win! Creativity win! Everyone wins! #AppleEDUchat
A6: Voice and choice is vital for engagement. Tonight’s chat makes me miss teaching math. Thankfully, our Coding course goes live this fall. Great chat everyone! #AppleEDUchat
The power of choice and creation are game changers for teaching and learning. Love the opportunities that our Ss have to show what they know! #appleEDUchat
A6: Giving students CHOICES in how they show what they know in math can also empower student voice and creativity! Math win! Creativity win! Everyone wins! #AppleEDUchat
A6: So many great ideas for implementing iOS into the classroom. Ss can create and we should give them the tools and let them explore. It is amazing what our Ss can achieve. #sccpssapplecore#appleeduchat
A6: Since this is my first Twitter chat, I think what I have gotten the most out of this is that it is getting me thinking of how I can create Twitter chats like these in my class. #AppleEDUchat#EDT520
