#WonderChat friends, I'm Carol, @Wonderopolis Wonder Lead Ambassador & ELA Consultant signing on from the #NYEDChat Moderator's Desk in Long Island. Doing double duty chat time tonight. #HappyNewYear2019
A1 #wonder & #exploration are essential ingredients in the #inquiry process. They lead to discovery and new knowledge while broadening perspective. #WonderChat
Hi everyone! Rachael from Perth, Australia. Primary science & digital tech specialist and cohost of #primarySTEMchat - currently enjoying the long summer break here #wonderchat
A1: at the foundation of learning is questioning. Students of all ages should be able to question and wonder freely! It leads to the purest of learning opportunities. #WonderChat
A1 Wonder drives exploration, I believe. When my K Ss wonder, you never know where it will lead. I'm happy to be their (tour) guide by the side. #WonderChat
Hi everyone! Rachael from Perth, Australia. Primary science & digital tech specialist and cohost of #primarySTEMchat - currently enjoying the long summer break here #wonderchat
A1: curiosity and wonder spark ⚡️ our brains and engage us in learning! We want to learn when we are curious. It’s something in us from the youngest age to want to explore our world and figure how it all works #engagechat
A1: Exploration & wonder are integral to not just the learning but the experience of discovery as well! The moment that a wonder makes that light bulb come on for a learner, that's the learner's moment that is theirs to own! #wonderchat
A1 it gives the Ts great background info a) about what the Ss might already know and b) what they’re interested in learning about & what ?s they have.... #WonderChat
A1 Providing opportunities for wonder and exploration allow Ss to regain/demonstrate their natural curiosity about the world. It might be just that spark you need to hook the "too cool for school" kids. #wonderchat
So true. Kids love asking questions. We need to keep that alive. Encourage the ‘why?’ Help kids learn to ask big, open questions that aren’t easy to answer #WonderChat
Kelly from Illinois jumping in!
A1 If kids lose their sense of wonder then what are we even doing with our profession?!?! Everyday is a chance to explore, inquire, and question. It’s as important as breathing! #WonderChat
It’s exciting to have a learning environment where you never quite know where the learning is going to go. Ss feel empowered when they have the opportunity to explore things that are important to them #wonderchat
We call those big ones level three questions. Level three questions are the red color in a stop light because they make us stop and go find answers. #WonderChat

And the key there is what is important to THEM! It's not about me, although I do share what I'm curious about to model. I just help guide them along the way. #WonderChat
A2 Media is an engaging form of text that integrates digital technology and content to spark wonder and inquiry. Bring in @Wonderopolis & @Buncee to create new content for further research. #WonderChat
A1 when ss are free to explore their own interests they take ownership in their own learning which makes it much more meaningful.
They appreciate the opportunity
#WonderChat

A1: I think kids are naturally curious about the world!!!! The best kind of classrooms are ones that are OPEN to the world!!!! The best kind of Ts say to kids: "Go out there and EXPLORE, LEARN, and LOVE!" #wonderchat#LivBits#KidsCanTeachUs
A2
Show a picture without a caption and have Ss see, think, & wonder it.
Show a video with no sound.
Get Ss talking about what they see AND more important, what they WONDER about it! #WonderChat
Level 1 is green because we can keep going. The answer is easy to find. Level 2 is yellow because we may need to slow down a bit to think about our answer. Comes from @AVID4College. We made the stop light work for #SiglerNation. #WonderChat
A2 This past fall I led a PD on using Google Earth and Streetview in class in order to spark inquiry, make observations, and inferences. @googleearth is my go to. #WonderChat
Hello, #WonderChat! Adrian from *rainy but still beautiful* SoCal — I teach media literacy at the high school level — looking for some #MondayMotivation! I know I came to the right place! 🙌🏻
@NatGeoEducation
Great point, Susan. I notice that every child loves getting outside and exploring their world too, even if they can be reluctant classroom learners #wonderchat
There’s so much you can do with visuals. Have Ss write from the POV of an object in the picture. What would that object see, hear, smell, feel, think amd WONDER.
#wonderchat
Hello, #WonderChat! Adrian from *rainy but still beautiful* SoCal — I teach media literacy at the high school level — looking for some #MondayMotivation! I know I came to the right place! 🙌🏻
@NatGeoEducation
A1: #whaif & wonder is what turns the impossible to possible. We need our Ss to know that their wonder is what can shift our world for the better & we can do that together. @pmg12 can vouch for that @NatGeoEducation#wonderchat
A1: I discovered this year I LOVE social studies!! I've never ever had a social studies class so having a teacher who loves the world as much as me is sooooo inspiring!!! I learned how happy my brain is when I am studying maps, cultures, and people!!! #heartbeeps#wonderchat
Yes! I love that as a primary science teacher I get to feed that curiosity about our world every day. So many chances to inspire wonder and opportunities to explore #WonderChat
A2
Show a picture without a caption and have Ss see, think, & wonder it.
Show a video with no sound.
Get Ss talking about what they see AND more important, what they WONDER about it! #WonderChat
A2: using media/images can create a curiosity in students. What do they notice? What do they see? What do you think the artist was thinking? Then Ss are able to use a variety of media to create their own works of art. I see @TNewsome1 do this regularly in art. #WonderChat
A2: I've used media as windows & mirrors to explore how a topic reflects the things we think about and wonder about in our lives and the lives of others! #wonderchat
A2 Media presents endless opportunities for short bursts of engagement & connections between print materials & the whole, wide world. It is amazing what Ss don't know they have at their fingertips, esp in high school/college #wonderchat
A2 In K we use media as one tool to support wonder and inquiry. We explore great online resources like @Wonderopolis@NatGeoEducation@CapstonePub#PebbleGo to dive deeper. Then we use iPad tech tools to share our new learning with peers and families. #WonderChat
A2 I post follow-up articles on my Edmodo for kids who want to learn more about a discussion topic. Also, if a S has a great question that stumps me, I encourage them to research and report back to the class. #wonderchat
Modelling curiosity and wonder is so important. It helps our Ss see us as lifelong learners. They need to see us getting excited about learning too. If I’m not into it, how can I expect them to be?! #wonderchat
Q3 What are some best practices for integrating different subjects and disciplines (math and music! civics and science!) with inquiry and wonder? #WonderChat
A2: today I read the book “The Magicians Hat” by @MalcolmJarod to our staff and will read it to students this month. It’s a great book to ignite dreams and the magic that comes from reading and wondering! #WonderChat
I was the same, Liv! I couldn't wait to grow up and start exploring the world and now my curiosity has taken me to some incredible places and it's fun to share that with my Ss. #WonderChat
A2
in geography class ss can immerse themselves in places with 360 tours, Google tours, street view etc. Charts, maps, and other data can spark great discussion.
#WonderChat
A2: we use @unlearn_com images & others see what connections can be made w/ our understanding of the world & grow / research from there in connection w/ Geo perspectives. It ties the world together & sparks curiosity to learn more. #wonderchat
A2: I often use clips from YouTube, movies or the news that open up my Ss’ world beyond what is immediate. Even books. I love using stories as well. Exposing Ss to experiences that aren’t achievable in our local context. Connecting with others via @Flipgrid too #wonderchat
A3 if your discipline can generate data, then we Geography teachers can get kids to map it! Take a google my maps and map out whatever you’re learning about! Maps of music origins never cease to make me wonder! #WonderChat
I loved going on nature walks with my own kids when they were little, and just observing and encouraging their sense of #wonder. We tend to think kids lose that as they get older, but I think it's still pretty close to the surface if you nurture that desire. #WonderChat
Wonder, curiosity and exploration have been the cornerstone of human expansion — and not just geographically — but for our minds and hearts as well! 😍❤️
#WonderChat@NatGeoEducation@Wonderopolis
A1: I discovered this year I LOVE social studies!! I've never ever had a social studies class so having a teacher who loves the world as much as me is sooooo inspiring!!! I learned how happy my brain is when I am studying maps, cultures, and people!!! #heartbeeps#wonderchat
I love seeing their eyes open wide when they realise that they can explore something they are super interested in and also that they can show what they know in a way that appeals to them by offering choice in this #wonderchat

Exoloration and wonder are the great levellers. Any child, anywhere, can do it. All great ideas and theories began with someone, somewhere, imagining the impossible. We need daydreamers and explorers as much as we need builders and scientists. #WonderChat
A2: Media is SOOOO powerful. It's like when you see something that makes you curious, you wonder more. When you wonder more, you ask more questions. When you ask more questions, you get more curious. That's why kids need access tech! #wonderchat#LivBits
This is an important point. They don’t know what they don’t know. We can guide them towards the things that can help them explore their world #wonderchat
A3 I mentioned dance as a medium earlier, so I’d be remiss not to direct this multidisciplinary crowd to Dance Your PhD, probably my favorite contest of the year. #WonderChathttps://t.co/dSyXO12u8r
A3: I love #pbl as a context and stratgey for a immersive and intergrated learning experience where learners use cross curricular skills like critical thinking! Project based learning has really been for me my way to break down the silos of learning in my classroom! #wonderchat
A3. Honestly, homeschool was the only choice for bringing the WONDER of creativity to learning. FL has killed curiosity with teaching to the test. No time for questions either. #WonderChat
A3 Inquiry projects that give Ss choice in topic but integrate multiple literacy & content stds & incorporate connections to the world outside of school can transform learning at all levels. Doing this with 9th grd this semester! #wonderchat
While exploring our on-site vernal pool (soon with an underwater drone!) our students are learning loads of science, but also the importance conservation and preservation of a local habitat. #WonderChat
Some of my heroes became extraordinary people because of wonder and curiosity. John Harrison of longitude fame and also our Ohio hero Neil Armstrong #wonderchat#4thchat
A3: as a best practice integration options are endless, but it’s important to keep the goal in mind. Integrating just to use a fancy tool is just using a fancy tool. #WonderChat
A3: Math is one of the topics I try to weave into presentations and after school
@eriksonmath helps me a lot ~ so many kids have mad math talents that like sports can energize engagement through competition. #wonderchat

A2: I think media can also be an equalizer. That's what my mum @cyndisueboo says a lot. When I see images or videos of ideas, places, and people who are different from me, I can think more deeply about the world. #WonderChat#LivBits#mumashoutout#hehehehe
A3 Agree with @iheart6ela that #pbl is where it's at. I'm constantly learning new ways of engaging with and learning alongside my colleagues through the @WMGLSI and place-based environmental stewardship. #WonderChat
Yes. Our schools and community do a wonderful job of fostering a love of nature using our campus, local organic farm, and conservation groups. Ss have opptys to participate in conservation corps project K-12. #WonderChat
A3 Talk with teachers of other disciplines to create common vocabulary. We have coordinated with our LA teachers to have common vocabulary with writing instruction. #WonderChat
The Silence is Golden #sos strategy from @DiscoveryEd is a great way to do this. Watch video clips w/o sound. Ask Ss what they saw, wonder, think the video is about, ❓they have, what ppl might be saying, etc. #wonderchat
A3: @okgo has inspired an integrative approach for science / music / civics —> https://t.co/0wPgoAuQmt - small example of neat ways to learn. Add in lyrics & map where videos are filmed & voilà - geography! :). #wonderchat
Q3 What are some best practices for integrating different subjects and disciplines (math and music! civics and science!) with inquiry and wonder? #WonderChat
A4 my department is currently adapting our curriculum for the IL state inquiry standards. We are openin each unit with inquiry and setting time aside each week for inquiry activities #WonderChat
This sounds wonderful. What brilliant opportunities. Many Ss don’t have the same opportunities to explore the natural world these days as I know I did growing up. I spent my days climbing trees and exploring the bushland. Not as easy for many now #wonderchat
A2 The Silence is Golden #sos strategy from @DiscoveryEd is a great way to do this. Watch video clips w/o sound. Ask Ss what they saw, wonder, think the video is about, ❓they have, what ppl might be saying, etc. #wonderchat
A4 I have used the QFT technique to have students generate their own questions about topics. I need to be better though about finding time to allow students to go deeper in finding the answers. #WonderChat

A4: our resident #wonder expert @lorclyon does this with wonder stations in her classroom. Brings wonder, creativity, making and so much more right into the classroom. #WonderChat
A4 Kelly that is fantastic. Inquiry process is inherent in NYS standards and our Wonder Team is preparing a Wonder-filled proposal on inquiry for #NCTE19. #WonderChat
I have Ss come up to me in the playground saying they love science learning and I can honestly say I love it too and let them in on a secret... I get to do science all day every day. It’s great to love what we do! #WonderChat

A3 I love bringing literature into my history classroom, especially poetry. Pluses, visual language, an emotional connection to the history, and short enough to experience in a single setting. #WonderChat
A4: Not as much stress here in Canada on Core stuff (for the most part) but trying to open up curriculum to Ss, unpacking it together, finding passion for learning through creating choice & various modes of learning to support S wonder / creativity. #wonderchat
This sounds awesome. I would love to do more of this. I love using @Seesaw to share the learning in my classroom every day with families but this sounds amazing - thanks for the idea #wonderchat

Q5 What are some strategies for instilling a sense of wonder and critical thinking about a topic that will last beyond the lesson or activity? #WonderChat
A4 We ditched all purchased kit/book-based science curriculum in our elem schools and created our own that is primarily linked to our campus environment in some way. Everything is inquiry based and the Ss love it -- as do the teachers! #WonderChat
A5 Strategies 4 installing sense of wonder & crit thinking about topic beyond the lesson: share media about topic via a gallery walk, have Ss talk in teams, create team project showing new knowledge gathered through research. #WonderChat
A4 By combining the stds/topics as much as possible into larger thematic units & giving Ss choice on how they demonstrate mastery. One we did in the fall was The Heart of the Class, focused on identity, & Ss wrote letters to folks who have shaped their identities. <3 #wonderchat
We’ve been waiting for A5, #WonderChat! We have two fabulous and free online courses opening up this week that will help educators integrate wonder and inquiry into their everyday practice. First, join our winter cohort and get #NatGeoCertified! https://t.co/UD8DqsbWF5
A5 Things I’ve used to stir up their sense of wonder: artifact show and tell (in HS!), self data collection, interviews with immigrants, spatial evaluation, VR with google Streetview, just to name a few! #WonderChat
A1 When you wonder you question, when you question you think, when you think you grow, when you grow amazing things happen as your lens to the world changes! So exciting! #wonderchat#empowerkids#doscience
A4: while I am bound to a certain degree by the topics in our Australian Curriculum, there’s plenty of scope to open with ‘big questions’/provocations within the topics to see where Ss’ interests lie. I don’t plan out a whole term of work, but let it take its course #wonderchat
A5 Because our science is very much campus-based Ss feel a great sense of ownership and pride. They are excited to share their explorations with families out of school. Families often send me photos of walks they took together on weekends to check on our vernal pool. #WonderChat

A4 We ditched all purchased kit/book-based science curriculum in our elem schools and created our own that is primarily linked to our campus environment in some way. Everything is inquiry based and the Ss love it -- as do the teachers! #WonderChat
A5: like @thelivbits notes - listen to Ss, create projects of inquiry together. Adjust in the moment to suit Ss needs & find the connection to their passions for authentic learning about our shared world. #wonderchat
Today's children are tomorrow's problem solvers. They need to believe in the value of dreams and ambition. One of the best things we can do for them is democratise the idea that they can make a difference by sharing with them stories of people who have done just that. #WonderChat
Q3 What are some best practices for integrating different subjects and disciplines (math and music! civics and science!) with inquiry and wonder? #WonderChat
A5: Building a culture of wonder within the classroom is key. Students are essential to that foundation in that they become the drivers of wonder when they collaborate in meaningful ways! Let the learners ask each other questions! Let the learners create questions! #wonderchat
A5 Our second course that emphasizes wonder and exploration is #NatGeoInquiry! We have a host of educators and explorers who say it’s changed their teaching. We’d love to have you join them. (You have to scroll down here.) #WonderChathttps://t.co/Ha15TzADYN
Q4: Wonder comes in all the time with social studies. Sometimes, it is "I wonder what would happen if ..." Others times it is a sense of magic when connections are made. #WonderChat
A5 Try to establish the topic's relevance to their own lives. "Why should they care?" is a guiding question for me...and if I can help them figure this out without directly telling them, even better. #WonderChat
Q5 Teaching the levels of Qs @matthew_arend mentioned is key, as is frequent Ss led discussions based on those Qs. This sets Ss up to be active wonderers for life. #wonderchat
We’ve been waiting for A5, #WonderChat! We have two fabulous and free online courses opening up this week that will help educators integrate wonder and inquiry into their everyday practice. First, join our winter cohort and get #NatGeoCertified! https://t.co/UD8DqsbWF5
A5 That message is a strong one, Liv. I ask Teachers to build solid relationships with students so a culture of trust can be established. All voices need to be honored. RElationship building is key. #WonderChat
I did the same! I didn’t want to be bound to following the bouncing ball 🎾 when there’s so many amazing things happening in our world 🌍 all the time. I don’t want to be pulling out the same activity and recycling it over and over... #WonderChat
Love the idea of creating curiosity and maintaining a sense of wonder in the CR. One key change I made was giving students more time to explore & think (ie not rush) so that each lesson / activity on unit leaves Ss wanting more & ideally cont the earning beyond the CR #WonderChat
A6: so many text features could be used from @NatGeoEducation and be paired to wonders of the day of the students choosing. What to know if students understand text features? Let them loose to mix and match. #siglerlearns#WonderChat
Well I start the blog with a few questions: Do you love pancakes covered in sweet, syrupy yumminess? If you’re like me, you do! But, have you ever wondered how syrup is made or where it comes from? @NatGeoEducation#wonderchat
A1: Exploration & wonder should be a part of every classroom regardless of content! It connects students directly to the world around them and their interests come alive in the classroom. The content becomes real when meshed with wonder. #WonderChat
A6 I have not explored those places with enough, but I have seen the impact of a daily activity that sparks inquiry, pose Qs, and pull students into a lengthy conversation about important topics. @EveryDayGov’s “On this Day in History” was awesome for that! #WonderChat
Hey @thelivbits - these are pics from my family farm. We make maple syrup every year. Collect it by hand, boil it, then bottle carefully. Quite the rewarding process that Mother Nature has given us for decades! #wonderchat

That’s awesome!! My kids are in first grade and came home today asking about iron, running all over the house trying to figure out what had iron then testing it with a magnet. I love their wonder and curiosity!! All thanks to their amazing teacher! #Wonderchat
We've loved designing experiments like making changes to the bird habitat outside our classroom -- testing food, placement, introducing elements to the environment. We make predictions, collect data, and sometimes participate in Citizen Science work such as @FeederWatchCam

A2: Media can spark interest in a topic that students might not think they are interested. Images, words, videos and other content is a great way to bring content to life and bring buzz to the classroom. #WonderChat
