A1: How to handle our ever diversifying community. How to ask good questions to someone of a different culture than you.

Brenda Monks-Adamson Very interesting topic tonight! Glad for the opportunity!
A1: also helping parents to understand how to support their kids in making local/global connections
A1: poverty, migration, unemployment, urbanization, educational gaps
A1: Mobility creating multinational/multiethnic communities, digital divide, poverty, & youth agency
Great point, do you have any good examples at your school Yvonne?
This is challenging when so many parents don’t even understand the connections themselves! https://t.co/E4xMcMFSjd
A1: also helping parents to understand how to support their kids in making local/global connections
A1: Looking at indigenous issues “out there” in the world opens the door to looking at troubling history right here
A1: virtually everything local has a global connection! As we've developed IL Global Ed Cert I'm amazed@the connections in Ag
A1: poverty, hunger, sustainable development, climate change.
Q1: We live & work in a coastal town here & were just discussing how our local main road will be affected by sea level rise
So true for D.C. and many communities in our area...ditto!
A1: Having a hard time thinking of one that isn't relevant to both local and global.
A1: Acceptance...regardless.
I agree with your answer! So hard to get kids to fully understand this
Ken from Western Oregon Univ. Getting in a little late
A1: Truly feeling empathetic for others
My org developed a curriculum to help 4th-6th graders make some connections
A1: Migration-immigration-refugees
A1. This focus is so important because many think of global issues as only "over there," and not locally connected.
A2: Accessability. Let's break barriers gaining access for all.
Sounds great, love to check that out.
Q2: What are some challenges for students in making connections between local and global issues?
A1: Equality, poverty, and hunger. Top issues at home and everywhere else.
Agreed and acceptance is much more preferable than tolerance
Many of our fellows working to solve the challenges in ed related to this! Definitely local & Global
and depending on the age, need to have different approaches
Right, connecting the threads to see how we are impacted locally by global issues can be a challenge.
A2: Getting students that have barely left their own neighborhood to see beyond borders is tough! Need to create opportunities
love this point! something relevant for everyone.
A1 climate change, education, poverty, social justice (should be imo)
A2 It seems surreal to them. Poverty in this country is real but different than poverty in many other countries.
A2 Reminding our Ss that we live in one world. It’s not “their" problem, but our problem https://t.co/lKoQp9AmnZ
Q2: What are some challenges for students in making connections between local and global issues?
A2: Ss often come into class with a set of assumptions about the world that prevents them from making connections to the world
Right on! USA is global w.in itself...beautifully so...
would be happy to follow up with you and can send you some sample pages.
Ss are not afforded chances to learn about local issues whether they have a global impact or not due to curriculumconstraints
A2:Ss w/privilege & access w/o enough time to reflect.Ss w/o resources overlooked when talking about poverty "over there"
True, need to break those as soon as they reach our school! https://t.co/ynoHpIviHK
A2: Ss often come into class with a set of assumptions about the world that prevents them from making connections to the world
yes! Such a big step to realize "my normal isn't everyone's normal"
A2: Ss come to us viewing the rest of the world as exotic and strange and complete disconnected from their little rural bubble
A2: Demonstrating interconnected mess is easy, cultivating an ongoing global consciousness is the challenge!
A2 being isolated. When learning about issues not being taught in a way that makes relatable to students
A2: Knowledge limited to stereotypes about different local/global communities.
A2 Also parents sometimes want 2 shelter Ks from realities of other countries- think Ks can’t handle it But it is their world
Very true. Need to take baby steps because neighborhood to world is a BIG leap.
A2: the see that other Ss face the same things they do. Due to mobility, Ss From "over there" are coming here
Yes! Student misconceptions a huge issue.
A2: Students don't know how something in 1 part of the world impacts other parts e.g. pollution, racial/ethnic/religious bias
A3: We as a society are egocentric, US teenagers even more so.
A2 It's "easier" to solve other people's problems. Check out the Reductive Seduction-excellent article https://t.co/DGGUr800Xm
We should have a chat on parents and how to get them to be advocates!
It is hard to get them to understand there is no normal.
A2: Finding space between tolerance and acceptance; cultural relativism and universal human rights are good challenges for Ss.
A2: Ts are having to confront a "judgmental lens" among our students on a daily basis
That should be A2: not trying to hurry the chat along! :)
Very true and tough conversation! Hard enough to have a conversation about our own stereotypes.
Yes! It blocks all curiosity - no curiosity, no learning.
So true. Do you think social/online media has played a role in increasing our egocentrism?
A2: Difficult to feel empathy for someone when the Other lives in a far off land w/a struggle that may look a bit different.
Love this IDEA so much!! Unfortunately even in my area Twitter is seen as a fluff social media tool. https://t.co/yjVGn5x1fq
We should have a chat on parents and how to get them to be advocates!
A2. Student priorities (i.e. family obligations or college/career prep)
A2: Understanding the nuance and variation among cultures/beliefs/issues
A2: Ss come in with little background knowledge about both their own place and those worldwide.
A3: Find videos, blogs, etc depicting different points of view to build empathy, etc.
Q3: What are some current resources that can help teachers connect local issues to global issues?
Internet problems on this end.....ugh!
It's normal for teens to be egocentric. Problematic when they don't grow out of it as adults
A2: Many of our current educational practices
A great article - really shows how a narrative of volunteering drives indivs more than what is actually needed
Depends on the medium and use - usually at the teenage level I would say yes. Instagram =likes, etc.
Yes-their world is small! I grew up in that world where I had no idea bc I was struggling to survive https://t.co/4BdCiDnvOE
so true, it's very hard especially when most students can't identify major countries across the globe
A3: Love the way makes global/local connections- poverty, power, religion, water etc. for public & teachers
Which practices are your favorites?
absolutely, just pointing it out that it is a barrier & couldn't agree more
A3: Organizations such as BuildOn are great for getting Ss to give back to other countries and see it from the other side.
Yes! T's can model how to deal with stereotypes. Important to acknowledge them without guilt/shame, move on.
A4: Our experiences deepen our knowledge on a level of no other...
A3: Asia Society has a training program which includes many resources for linking local/global issues: https://t.co/NqgCDHRECu
: did a great workshop for parents at my son's school on some of these issues
Absolutely but putting into context what is age apprt is vital 4 Ss to see the world they inherit https://t.co/etNkuDFWhd
it's all relative and age-appropriate, certainly don't want to have a class discussion regarding beheadings etc.
And there are so many - diversity in the world is so enriching... learning about them can cultivate empathy
A3. has a ton of great resources for Ts to incorporate news from around the world! + a new lesson builder tool
Tell me more about BuildOn!
Discussions! Ask your Ss probing questions to process & make meaning of their thoughts & experiences https://t.co/LYrQsRe4n7
Q3: What are some current resources that can help teachers connect local issues to global issues?
A1- Global warming for sure. It is a challenge for everyone on this planet.
Yes modeling is often the best teaching tool. Hard conversations but they always pay off in the end!
oh yes - a HUGE barrier!!
A3:Many have outreach programs for schools, other groups devoted to certain cultures as well
. multiple-choice tests ;-) jk - Student centered, inquiry based approaches with a dash of controversy. You?
That is fantastic 2!! If I start planning now… :) Maybe by next fall I could do something like this https://t.co/Bhxnbx3a3i
: did a great workshop for parents at my son's school on some of these issues
A3 I have my students utilize articles and see if they can find a local connection
A3: One last resource! Chapter 7 of the Educating for Global Competence book also has some resources: https://t.co/6ULltbaQj1
I didn't, but now it's on my list for the weekend! :) Thanks for the resource.
A2: Ss must have empathy for people outside their community and country. Making direct connections through travel is key.
A3. Alumni of the program are a great resource for expertise on this very subject!
A3 By humanizing the "other" on global side. Use social media connection resources, such as &
We share this with our fellows every year, invaluable strategies and foundational info for making connections!
A3: Tons of resources at our disposal online. This Q inspires me to incorporate images from local media on relevant issues.
A3: World Newspapers to compare perspectives, priorities in reporting, & decenter worldview https://t.co/H75SEpTLjj
A3 I am thinking big. What if our S councils were taught & led efforts 2 raise awareness on issues that are local & global?
A3: I also used GIS resources & mapping software to help students visualize local-global connections.
A3: really basic resource but just saw World Book Kids online encyclopedia where you can pick two places to compare.
Q4: How can travel help bring to life local and global connections?
A3b Another way to make local-global connection is thru world wise schools. Program connects Ss to PCVs overseas
As an ES T, I have to be careful with newspapers. I used to do a grt lsn called What’s the News, but… https://t.co/619MFYKsiH
A3: World Newspapers to compare perspectives, priorities in reporting, & decenter worldview https://t.co/H75SEpTLjj
Nice! Do you think you might have leads for my French learners to connect w/some Moroccan ss who are learning Eng?
A4: You cannot truly understand a culture until you are immersed in it!
Keep thinking big! https://t.co/H8xjYTWth9
A3 I am thinking big. What if our S councils were taught & led efforts 2 raise awareness on issues that are local & global?
Great resources - you're on point - key is making human connection - how do you do that?
A4: Not to be flip, but because you are there!
