A1:135 hours per year. Level 1: NH Level 2: IL Level 3: IM AP: IH I'm open to suggestions about improving this. Seems impossible #langchat
  • PRHSspanish Jan 5 @ 8:15 PM EST
A1 Ours spend a semester, 90 min every day, for a 'year' credit, level 1 NH, level 2 IL, level 3+ TBD... #langchat
  • kballestrini Jan 5 @ 8:16 PM EST
A1: Approximately 120 minutes per week. Progress is slower than I’d like. After 7th + 8th, hope to have ‘em into Intermed. #langchat

  • languagehead Jan 5 @ 8:16 PM EST
A1 #langchat In my cc setting, we get 70 hrs class+lab/semester Our pilot prof goals: 101 NH/102 IL. 200 in discussion: split as in AAPPL?
  • senoritawood Jan 5 @ 8:17 PM EST
    A1 6th 2 days/ week, 7th 3 days/week, 8th 4 days/week for 45 min. My target 🎯 for end of 8th grade is NH #langchat

  • MlleSulewski Jan 5 @ 8:17 PM EST
    That's a question coming up! :) #langchat
    In reply to @LesliePhillips3
  • SraStilson Jan 5 @ 8:17 PM EST
A1 Also have to mention, it's so hard to asses proficiency...I ask Ss for EVIDENCE of those levels, but it's really performance #langchat
  • jadelman75 Jan 5 @ 8:17 PM EST
A1: Is Intermediate Low appropriate expectation for 2-yr middle school program? #langchat
  • ADiazMora Jan 5 @ 8:17 PM EST
A1 when I look at prof levels, I always think back at student teachers' requirements which is Adv. Low in WI #langchat
  • profepj3 Jan 5 @ 8:17 PM EST
A1b: Since my Ss' growth is tied to my eval, I say that the number of the lvl is the target, eg Span 3's target is I3. #langchat
  • LesliePhillips3 Jan 5 @ 8:17 PM EST
Didn't mean to get ahead of you! LOL! I'll be patient. :) #langchat
    In reply to @MlleSulewski
  • dressurleben Jan 5 @ 8:17 PM EST
A1: Really depends on how we define proficiency b/c at school, after studying and preparation, my exams are more like performances #langchat
  • magisterb480 Jan 5 @ 8:18 PM EST
A1 1 year for 1-3, 1/2 year in L4. Still new to this proficiency level thing but I'd say my Latin 2s are solidly NH approaching IL #langchat
  • ADiazMora Jan 5 @ 8:18 PM EST
IMHO...no #langchat only bc it depends on if its every other day and how it is split up
    In reply to @jadelman75
  • MCanion Jan 5 @ 8:18 PM EST
Seems a few years needed at IL especially if whole class averaged. #langchat

  • tmsaue1 Jan 5 @ 8:19 PM EST
A1: should we differentiate between proficiency targets and performance expectations? #muddiedwaters #langchat
  • SraStilson Jan 5 @ 8:19 PM EST
Is this recommended, or what they say is most likely for AVERAGE, regardless of teaching style? Can push higher w/focus on prof? #langchat
  • mllewilliams Jan 5 @ 8:19 PM EST
    A1 43 min/day, 5 days/wk. 1 lvl/yr. No official proficiencies but my course targets: 2H at NH, 3G at IL and 4 and 5 (reg) at IL/IM #langchat
  • SraWilliams3 Jan 5 @ 8:19 PM EST
A1, cont'd my district says students NH by end of level 1 but doesn't say anything about levels 2-5 #langchat
  • senoraCMT Jan 5 @ 8:19 PM EST
intermediate low on topics they know well (performance) but not proficiency overall probably #langchat
    In reply to @jadelman75
  • MbiraAbby Jan 5 @ 8:19 PM EST
A1 I see "proficiency", what I use are the performance @actfl guide. curious if we are talking performance or proficiency levels? #langchat
    In reply to @actfl
  • SrMcMaine Jan 5 @ 8:20 PM EST
A1 We are NH at the end of yr 1, except in Interp listening, which is IL, then up to IL in everything for the most part by yr 2 #langchat
  • Sra_Kennedy Jan 5 @ 8:20 PM EST
how many minutes per week? #langchat
    In reply to @doriecp
  • MlleSulewski Jan 5 @ 8:20 PM EST
I have a hard time assigning a prof level to any S; too sympathetic an audience. Performance can vary wildly from task 2 task also #langchat
  • tjeag Jan 5 @ 8:20 PM EST
#langchat YES. I always wonder why we don't call them PERFORMANCE targets instead.
    In reply to @tmsaue1
  • MCanion Jan 5 @ 8:20 PM EST
And 47% of teacher candidates in Spanish reach Advanced low. #langchat
    In reply to @ADiazMora
  • SraSpanglish - Moderator Jan 5 @ 8:20 PM EST
in the classroom we can really only ever ESTIMATE proficiency based on performances anyway, right @tmsaue1? #langchat
    In reply to @dressurleben, @tmsaue1
  • dressurleben Jan 5 @ 8:21 PM EST
I agree. Then should we offer Level 2A and Level 2B - if they are both aligned to IL? #langchat
    In reply to @MCanion
  • ADiazMora Jan 5 @ 8:21 PM EST
I graduated in 2008 so maybe..but still proves that how to expect Ss at IH if only teachers need to be IH?!? #langchat
    In reply to @dressurleben
  • tmsaue1 Jan 5 @ 8:21 PM EST
since we don't really teach or assess proficiency, I like that idea. #langchat
    • tjeag Jan 5 @ 8:20 PM EST

  • SraSpanglish - Moderator Jan 5 @ 8:21 PM EST
I think when we say proficiency, we're talking in generalizations based on performances #langchat
    In reply to @SraStilson
  • PRHSspanish Jan 5 @ 8:21 PM EST
#langchat Q2, coming right up! Wow - lots of great comments on performance vs proficiency and how they work together. Tough stuff!
  • PRHSspanish Jan 5 @ 8:21 PM EST
#langchat Q2: What are some reasons for variations in proficiency targets across programs?
  • VTracy7 Jan 5 @ 8:22 PM EST
    A1: I have 50 minute classes that meet M-F #langchat
  • MCanion Jan 5 @ 8:22 PM EST
You would need a checklist of topics within the prof range that ss hit. Collect enough of the topics...#langchat
    In reply to @tjeag, @tmsaue1
  • profepj3 Jan 5 @ 8:22 PM EST
Which is also probably why we're seeing so many different targets for A1 #langchat
    In reply to @tjeag, @tmsaue1
  • dressurleben Jan 5 @ 8:22 PM EST
Yes, we should. #langchat. Without an AAPPL (or sim) test, it would be hard to assess true proficiency unless you are MOPI trained
    In reply to @tmsaue1
  • jadelman75 Jan 5 @ 8:22 PM EST
Definitely agree- we're estimating their proficiency level, based on performances we see. #langchat
    In reply to @SraSpanglish, @SraStilson

A2 It all depends on the students you have in your class. Work to their abilities, not where you think they should be #langchat
  • SraSpanglish - Moderator Jan 5 @ 8:23 PM EST
I would say it depends on how much they meet. I aim for IL by the end of level 2, but that's with 90 minute classes #langchat
    In reply to @jadelman75
  • dressurleben Jan 5 @ 8:24 PM EST
Case and point. IMO, the OPI and WPT are true proficiency, whereas tests in school are actually performances. #langchat
