#TLAP is a weekly chat for educators who embrace author, keynote speaker, and moderator David Burgess' approach of teaching like a pirate. Burgess is author of Teach Like A PIRATE: Increase Student Engagement, Boost Your Creativity, and Transform Your Life as an Educator and co-author of P is for PIRATE: Inspirational ABC’s for Educators.
A1: Coffee (*cough* my savior *cough*) gets me awake and ready to go in the morning. My class should do the same -- awaken the minds of my middle schoolers and get them eager and ready to learn new ideas and concepts. #tlap
A2: Reese's. The chocolate is the part the students know they're learning -- the facts. The peanut butter is the depth of the knowledge/inspiration stemming from the initial lesson. #TLAP
A3: Frankenstein. Students aren't made up of one element -- they consist of different strengths, weaknesses, joys, and sorrows. Understanding such makes us better teachers. #tlap
A4: Coaster. We're not perfect -- some days are better than others in the classroom. There are ups and downs. What matters is not the so much the ending, though -- what matters is the process of how we got there. #TLAP
#tlap A4 The roller coaster is every day. We are ready with new lessons each day but unexpected ups and downs occur. Examples: Ss who succeed for the first time to Ss who have had a crisis you help them with!
#tlap A5 For Ts, get out of the pool (tradition teaching) and into the ocean (become a facilitator and open Ss to becoming creative and collaborative in search of the vast information). For some Ts, this is a difficult transition.
