Hi . Watching the . Trying to multi task.
Katrina from Charlotte, NC. elem math coach
Q1. What are strategies that motivate students? Do you use more internal (intrinsic) and/or external (extrinsic) motivation?
Carlo from Garfield, NJ, high school teacher. I am also a coach and I run a few clubs at school.
A1: Can another person really improve another's intrinsic motivation? I've always been torn.
Nicole, Spanish teacher, Bloomfield hills, glad to be here. Put my son to bed just in time lol
A1 Choices and multiple opportunities/chances to learn.
A1. Ideally I focus on intrinsic motivation and the desire to learn. I allow redo's, reward focus and effort. Use stickers too.
A1 Providing students with choice helps to motivate them.
A1: Intrinsic & student choice. I always let Ss decide what kind of tech to demo their learning, etc.

I agree but the more I read about growth mindset the more I believe you can
A1. As a first year teacher, I find myself using more extrinsic motivation, but I want to shift to more intrinsic motivation
Hi, Rachelle frm Pittsburgh, Span & Fr T, A1 Give Ss choices, ask Ss for fdbk, plan diff activ
Intrinsic. Not much homework given for credit, lots of authentic activities to make kids proud of their achievements
A1: I think extrinsic works better in elementary school and intrinsic in upper level schooling. Extrinsic will only go so far.
I've read just about everything there is on growth mindset, and have seen Dweck present. Still not sure.
A1 I ask them what they like to do and I build activities off of those suggestions
motivating students should be personal to them.
A1: Choices allow Ss to choose anything form their writing topic to what their class novel will be. Also love !
A1: Use a combination of both. Appeal to their intellectual maturity w “So, you’re on a date” Qs and points w Twitter polls.
A1: Allowing students to choose anything form their writing topic to what their class novel will be, I also love !
A1: Intrinsic motivation would benefit the student more to please themselves.
I depend on intrinsic, but sometimes I feel lower-level learners cannot get on board, no matter how interesting the activity
A1: Curious to see if S's tracking their own data while using digital content helps motivate them to grow. Does anyone do this?
our students track their own data and yes we see a huge difference in motivation
A1 I threaten them with malted milk balls and the get right to work
Q2. What role do teachers play in motivating students? Parents?
A1 I show them pics of 's class and tell them we must be better. They comply.
That's great! How do they track it? Google sheets? Journaling? Digital portfolio?
Scared silly, right? https://t.co/OWiCOnK2eQ
A1 I show them pics of 's class and tell them we must be better. They comply.
I have seen increased S motivation with S owned data trackers, but not attached to the digital piece.
Tracking one's own data on just about anything improves effort & results.
I thought you would still be maker fairing
Most use google sheets but some still use paper student data trackers
Off to dinner shortly. Unable to participate in or tonight https://t.co/171H0knjyz
I thought you would still be maker fairing
is happening in 45 minutes addressing & Join the conversation
Three cheers for journaling in some form!
Google Forms w/ DocAppender work also.
A2: Teachers & parents play an important/crucial role w/ motivating and not motivating Ss.
A2: teachers-developing learning tasks with student input and interests in mind. Parents-getting kids interested in learning
A2 teachers should be embracing ideas that students have and use up them as motivation
A2. A key piece for a teacher is to be the motivator. Encourage, create a safe place where risks are OK.
Parents should be bringing suggestions and helping with activities
Are you still at the faire?
A2: Positive, highly engaged, confident, encouraging teachers & parents create student motivation
Love that site - one of my faves to share w teachers!
A2 I am answer for "Tacos Tacos Tacos"
A1 doorways to instrinsic motivators - always have longer lasting impacts on learning than extrinsic https://t.co/yZXin4C0Hp
A2 Ts lead by example, role in CR, show meaning for learning, help motiv/engage Ss, Ps also should support
A2 Ps & Ts set expectations for Ss. The motivation they provide is frequently extrinsic to the S (almost by definition).
Yes, parents need to provide for their childs' basic needs. Tacos included. https://t.co/9EBuBSrHaO
A2 I am answer for "Tacos Tacos Tacos"
A2 Julie from TN here! Ss want to please Ts that care-Ts can encourage Ps by using social media https://t.co/IoL5YcX8IQ
Q2. What role do teachers play in motivating students? Parents?
A2: Positive, challenging, highly engaging, confident, and encouraging teachers & parents help create student motivation
A2: Respect and acceptance would be a great start to motivate students.
haha I have sucked you into the chat
Hi Shai from PA here. HS Math T.
A2b give Ps and Ss opportunities for engagement-Build sense of community. Contact Ps about good stuff too, praise Ss for success
A2: Student choice. When the S's can choose from a list of different ways to show what they know, they take more ownership.
A2: Teachers should model the values they seek to instill. Model lifelong learning. Ss need/crave a witness to life lived well.
A1: IMO When T builds a positive cultured classroom, it doesn't take much to motivate Ss. They tend to walk through walls for T.
not really. You can open another's eyes to what's important to them, imo.
Welcome to all the members that just joined our chat as we discuss student motivation
Q3. What are some of the underlying causes of a lack of motivation in learners? How do address them?
thanks for the reminder about giving students choice. It's so easy to get wrapped up in what I want them to do
A2: We focus too much on grades and not on growth. S's are not rewarded based on how much they grow. I don't like that.
A2: Ts must definitely need to motivate Ss. Ps too. Ts need to get Ss excited about what/relevance Ss are learning.
A3 Fear of failure is a primary cause of lack of motivation. We need to build a safe environment where S are not afraid to fail.
A3: Enabling, learned helplessness, marginalization, disenfranchisement, etc.
A3 Disconnected from their learning - such as boredom, overwhelmed, lack of connection to real world, home life situation etc
A3 a sense of failure that permeates their desire to learn. We celebrate/create successful opps https://t.co/NPpXoSdAq5
Q3. What are some of the underlying causes of a lack of motivation in learners? How do address them?
A3 - lack of self efficacy for sure keeps some of my students from achieving and attempting.
A3 Seems to me that lack of motivation comes from lack of control over one’s environment. Ss have little of that, typically.
Just told my Ss last week that a test doesn't define who they are and sometimes what they know.
A3: Sometimes the lack of motivation is due to lack of relevance to topic.
A3: Education not being made a priority in the homes of many of my students is the reason why they lack motivation.
A3: Many HS students aren’t convinced that the class is relevant / makes a difference in life. Ts must connect the dots, bae.
A3 Learned helplessness, fear of failure, pressure, unengaged...Ts need need to remember to celebrate each & every success
A3: SEAT TIME One of the biggest motivators I see in high school is graduating early. I'm a big fan of content based mastery
A3: How success/failure is perceived in home life can influence student self perception of motivation.
A3 In HS I find st enter w/ fixed mindsets, especially in .
And, unfortunately, we can't control what goes on at home.
A3 Some Ss are bored, maybe fear of failure, too grade focused, relevance to their life isn't clear
A3 we pull from ideas from 10 years ago when we should look at tools today
A3: pure boredom. Some Ss are used to getting what they want when they want it in a society of instant gratification
For Ss that have a homelife that doesn't support edu, I go above and beyond to show interest in everything Ss do. That helps Ss.
As a former HS teacher (18 yrs), I do agree that it's harder to motivate. Many yrs of them doubting themselves.
Yes! Do you think that the issue is entitlement?
Skeptical that this is a new phenomenon. Plenty o’bored Ss back in the 80s :)
Hi everyone Stuart from Auckland, NZ joining late.
Agreed! voices & choices go a long way towards building safe learning space.
Its tough, but this time of yr I do see a lot of growth. Change in their perspective of themselves +
Great point and struggle to the opposite in the classroom. A3
Q4. What resources (books, sites etc) do you utilize for student motivation?
A3 They don't feel valued as individuals.
A3 They don't feel valued as individuals.
I think entitlement is a big issue. Sometimes it is not the teachers' or the parents' doing or lack thereof.
A3: If a student can teach herself your subject by watching YouTube videos and ace the exam, why are you here?
A4 Padlet is great as all students to be involved and have their opinions valued.
Great q and one many schools and Ts are struggling to answer! #
I notice that my Ss that have jobs don't fall into the entitlement category.
A4. I mostly utilize ideas I've generated from these discussions. Other sites=padlet, google apps, etc..
A4: I like the work of , & for Ss motivation, as well as my own motivation.
Great point Carlo, these ones also tend to valued their edu a lot more IMO. #
A2 designing experiences to support autonomy, connectedness and feedback to build a sense of competence https://t.co/GZAVWzJlp3
Q2. What role do teachers play in motivating students? Parents?
A4 wevideo is also great in that it allows student choice and agency.
A4: toontastic, an app for creating animated cartoons. Student voice with the characters say and can even import photos
Agree as well. The whole “skin in the game” phenomenon is real.
A4 isn't that answer "Students"
A4 is a great in motivating students - multiple learning platforms plus room for each students' opinions & answers
A3 Students feel they're answering questions that don't matter to them. Esp in MS/HS. Let students ask their own quesitons
A4 "Why we do what we do" by Deci and Ryan https://t.co/1QcliBRML4
Q4. What resources (books, sites etc) do you utilize for student motivation?
A4 My belief in my st is the biggest resource. I won't allow st to quit or give-up. It goes a long way in motivating ss.
A4 doesn't that depend on the students in your class?
A4: polls. Added advantage of being instantly accessible to their peers.
A4. Two books: Motivating Unmotivated Students from Doug Reeves. The Motivated Brain by Gregory & Kaufeldt
A4 Lots of variety Ss enjoy choices
Less clear is their community?
Yes but I have some go to's to help me
A4: Stickers help, even for HS students. motivate my Ss to participate.
A4 part of what motivates is you the teacher being excited about what you are doing
I understand your point, but I find it difficult to get students to ask questions they truly need the answers to
A4: No books or programs, just some healthy competition - against themself.
I have multiple ways to do an activity and pull out the one that fits the class
I think all good Trs have this trait. Kids respond to it and reciprocate it.
Absolutely. Ss laugh at me when I say things like "I LOVE factoring!" or "Logs are the BEST!" High energy.
Gamification. Using the same concepts that make video games addicting & applying it to education Still trying to make it work...
Was exploring that with my remediation course, but the course has been cancelled. Bummed!
A4 pt 2 Having Ss create with also motivates them, enjoy creating
Want to inspire open revolt - don't post in as long as possible. Shift talk to why you're learning.
wouldn't that be what not to do?
A4: Discussions about Ss interests need to be made in order to make a connection. They need to envision THEIR goal!
Did you say that? Works for me.
So true. I had a Ss that most everyone else felt he would never pass state test, but I didn't. He passed!
I agree 100%. This needs to be done on an individual basis!
wish I could! Kids in our district want quick qualitative and quantitative feedback
My students also love creating through technology and then sharing with their peers! https://t.co/t9WeCDAAIO
A4 pt 2 Having Ss create with also motivates them, enjoy creating
Q5. What is a take-away that you had from tonight’s ?
Bingo! Safe environ for Teachers too. Tough to innovate w/o failing.
Arguably, a T who gets an answer like that HAS motivated their Ss. There’s your “student voice” right there
Ss enjoy using this and so do I for my own grad coursework & other projects
A5 that we need to let students be the drive of hip what they use to learn and I miss
A5 It may be the last week of school but it's not time to stop motivating Ss I'm excited to keep learning throughout this week!
A4 good honest formative feedback works wonders for motivation
Teach them to FINISH STRONG!!
Nathan's question Q6 Do you give students the opportunity to talk about they could improve your class?
A5: So many great ideas from so many passionate teachers. PLNs on Twitter help make up for institutional blindness.
TA: Provide Ss with positive safe environment, offer choice, have relevance &never stop believing in them helps Ss be motivated.
A5: Can't give up on Ss. We need to have more parent support to drive the motivation of the Ss after they walk out at 3.
A5 while we can't force students to learn, we can provide them with the best possible learning environment and support.
If we're not adding value, we might as well put them in front of a monitor and hire someone cheaper
Learned helplessness from multiple sources w/n school & outside of it.
As the school year comes to a close. You have the summer to think of some new approaches!
I give them the opportunity to create their own learning benchmarks above my own. Amazing how hard they work.
As long as we remember Ss and Ts are more than data points.
we take a class period and discuss how we can make the class better and explain why we did something this way
To create opportunities to use that knowledge ... not all about acing that exam ...
Meaning it goes far beyond college and career ready, right?
A5 Lots of great ideas, keep working on our CR, our own PD, new ideas, don't be afraid to try new things
There is no next week due to the holiday weekend. Be safe and enjoy some time off. and I will be back June 5th.
A5: As teachers, we must cultivate an environment where students feel encouraged to strive for their personal best.
is off next week for Memorial Day. The topic for June 5 is The year in review & summer learning. Join & 1 then
Exactly. Something to the presence of someone who can truly educate (“bring out”) something new/unrealized.
I am hearing hackchat whispers
yes! Because computers can disseminate info explains the shift in how I teach language
A6: Yes, I have done it individually, instead of a group discussion. It makes them feel that their opinion is valued!

Are you an edu outside of that wants to learn more about ? Sign up for PL Academy pl/cmslearns.org/pla
Absolutely. Let computers handle the rote so we can do what we do best.
