Greetings everyone...thanks for being here. This is our first time at this gig...wahoo. :-) Please introduce yourself by telling us who you are, what you teach, and then give a shout out to your alma mater!!! I'm Wendy...pirate prof of ED majors at #smsu! Go Stangs!! #sstlap
A1: Hi all! Iโm Dan, High School history teacher from NJ. I wouldnโt be the passionate teacher that I am without @TCNJSchoolofEd and I am forever grateful for the quality education they provided! #sstlap
Hi #sstlap, this is Bill Chapman, a retired secondary social studies teacher, checking in from Berkeley, CA. My Alma Mater is the University of California, Santa Barbara.
#sstlap questions brought to you tonight by #SMSU Mustangs School of Education ELED teacher candidates about ready to student teach. Q1 trotting in shortly... :-)
Q1: What are some of the best ways to get your students excited about social studies? Especially in elementary where the time is limited to 30 minutes 2 times a week? #sstlap
A1: I think this is true in any subject area / grade, but you have to take the information off the page and make it come to life. Make it relevant to the students and help guide them toward a greater knowledge of self and content #sstlap
A1: I've been moving towards Room transformation thanks to @hopekingteach & @WadeKing7 just changing things around that relate to what we are going to learn about. Starts the curiosity. #sstlap
A1 real life application!!! Weโve been looking at maps using Google Maps when doing a Build a City math game, learning about where characters live, & connecting to things outside #sstlap
A1: By being excited about it yourself! Enthusiasm is contagious - if youโre intrigued and engaged with your topic, hey will be too! Then, harness that intrigue into an assignment that makes the historical topic relavent and relatable to students! #sstlap
A1 I like to use current events to hook students. CNN 10 is great for grades 7-12. I also like Junior Scholastic magazine and Newsela for high interest topics. #sstlap
Q1: What are some of the best ways to get your students excited about social studies? Especially in elementary where the time is limited to 30 minutes 2 times a week? #sstlap
A2 I've always sought to teach skills, not content, so the course topic is only relevant to the extent that its subject matter forms the material with which we practice skill development. #sstlap
A2: I'm a real believe in #ditchhw more time for students to learn and work. Not give them a ton of paper work they can google the answers for and then forget the next day. I teach real world application. #sstlap
A2: I could never choose; I love them all too much! So I would give my students the agency to make the choice. The best topic to students is one they care about and identify with. When students care, relate, and empathize with a topic social studies is at its prime! #sstlap
Chris from Bloomington, IN. Teach world history for private online HS affiliated w/ Indiana Univ. Sorry to be late - was getting my kids to bed. :) #sstlap
Raquel-Tech integrator Green Bay inner history/S.S. nerd
A2 Aztec/Mayan civilizations. Always fascinated me and now with new info even more amazing what they did.
#sstlap
A2: Definitely World War II. My great-Grandpa was a very and it covers so many topics and themes when you zoom out from the battlefields themselves #sstlap
A4: Make it into a jigsaw and provide a provocative, underlying question. Make them WANT to discover that information from the textbook so they can use it in the activities/discussion that follows! #sstlap
A3 a quick and simple way to make a boring textbook lesson fun and engaging is to turn it into a game! I've taken basic question worksheets and cut them into strips and turned it into a relay race! Adding movement helps so much! #sstlap
A3 my team likes to incorporate lots of Childrenโs Lit & real world applications! Learning about the seasons weโve read books but then also go observe & experience them outside! #sstlap
A3: I use questions or vocab terms into interaction lessons or into videos that engage my students more. Or expanding on images and terms with real experiences. #sstlap
A2: If I could only teach one topic, it would definitely be World War II. My great-Grandpa was a veteran in the 71st Infantry Division and the war lends itself to so many topics and themes when you zoom out from the battlefields themselves #sstlap
A3) Anything you can make real, you should make real. My kids tried to stack rocks to make Inca style buildings this week. Took no time but they were way into it and totally got the learning. #sstlap
Q4:How do you incorporate social studies lessons into lessons outside of your social studies time? How do you integrate social studies into all subjects? #sstlap
A4 Everything has a history. In science, look at the history of whatever science topic you're studying. In English, read historical literature, and write about historical topics. In Music ed, look at the history of instruments, compositions, composers, etc. #sstlap
A4: Oh I always do a little bit here and there. I talked about making pitches for marketing in my #3dprinting lesson. I took logos and moved them into a pixel art lesson in multimedia. I create story suit types using @Ozobot I like to mix. #sstlap
A3: Getting students active or bringing in some of their interests. Giving them voice and choice in projects and activities goes a long way as well. #sstlap
A4 one of my favorites was we practiced counting through a Build a City game, but of course, first we had to explore cities & skyscrapers on Google Maps. Social & Math and they loved it!!! #sstlap
A4 Our LA dept has to incorporate a lot of nonfiction but they don't integrate w/ us for some reason? They teach Ss Oh Captain My Captain at the beginning of the yr but we don't teach Civil War until the end. Could be so much more powerful if we did it at the same time! #sstlap
A4 If you need a real world topic to have students practice simple arithmetic and direction following skills, teach them to complete a 1040EZ (especially in March and early April). https://t.co/Z2Jm8DApnX#sstlap
A4. My elementary teachers found that integrated units allows for S.S. to be brought in easier. It allowed them to focus on reading yet look at social issues.
#sstlap
In my course we use Teach Like a Pirate #tlap by @burgessdave. BUT...when the teacher candidates get out to student teach, they are given the manual. :-/ #sstlap
I did my teacher training quite a while ago (graduated in '94) and don't remember there being much emphasis on textbooks, especially for SS education. That wasn't the case in the actual classrooms, though. #sstlap
A4: I think the easy connection is with Language Arts/English. So many great books require historical knowledge for context (Scarlet Letter, Animal Farm, The Crucible, Night, etc) #sstlap
Q4:How do you incorporate social studies lessons into lessons outside of your social studies time? How do you integrate social studies into all subjects? #sstlap
A5: I do this during my resume unit. I have Ss write down short and long term goals. Then write down what others say about them and then create a manifesto that represents them. Then they use that going forward writing their resumes and dreams of careers. #sstlap
A4 I team teach with an ELA teacher. Right now we're working on a unit we've called "Well behaved women rarely make history". She is reading Malala's book with them. We are also working with the math and science teacher. #sstlap
Being K, I feel itโs easier to integrate it too. My team & I feel that our kids get social studies all day & shouldnโt just call 20 mins that subject #sstlap
Make it real world applicable. Something they can see/do participate in. The "Big Picture" absrtract ideas are not easy for them so making it that they can see/touch/do
#sstlap
A5: Teach them to connect to their community. Build sense of citizenship from early age. Also teach them how to search the internet responsibly!
#sstlap
A5: I teach high school, but I'm finishing up the book Learn Like a Pirate by @PaulSolarz. It has some things I can incorporate into my classroom, but if I were teaching elementary grades it would be my go-to book for everything #sstlap#LearnLAP
California did the same. Politics. Every culture group wants their piece protected so we have the same mess we had with our last framework. Too much content. #sstlap
Progressive Era speed dating. Students assigned a progressive reformer and upload their dating profiles to P-Date (Google Slide) and choose 8 dates. At the end, they choose their perfect progressive mate. #sstlap
Q6: Similar to the last question, these teacher candidates need to know tools and strategies you use to include students who have special needs in social studies instruction. #sstlap
A5 donโt keep social studies separate!!! Kinders (and all ECE) are immersed in Social studies all day! Use themes for the seasons & have it cross all subject areas. They also are learning about their community & being friends, so provide real life opportunities #sstlap
A6 Allow SPED students to show their knowledge in alternative ways. I had some SPED Ss who built lego scenes and explained them instead of writing an essay. If you are just grading content knowledge this can be very useful for them! #sstlap
A6) Newsela is a great source for finding leveled readings for SS classes. Also try to use variety of presentation styles to let students explore content - video, audio, text, images. #sstlap
But one of the things our learners need most is to learn the stories of those who've been marginalized and excluded. When that is allowed to continue, those groups will continue to be abused. #sstlap

A6 I've had SPED students mainstreamed into my classes for 25 yrs. I've learned that you need to differentiate and be flexible in how they show you what they've learned. Technology is great for differentiating. #sstlap
Universal Design for Learning is a great framework for inclusive education. Make sure youโre giving Ss multiple ways to access content, process information, and show mastery. #sstlap
Q6: Similar to the last question, these teacher candidates need to know tools and strategies you use to include students who have special needs in social studies instruction. #sstlap
Again, this simply isn't true. I have 2 Asian kids in my classes this year. I guarantee you the other 140 will still love learning about Japan. #sstlap

I find them interesting (what's not interesting about a culture that figured out floating gardens but still ripped people's hearts out for sacrifice?). But my students, as a whole, do better when they can see relevance of content #sstlap
A7: The key to teaching ELLs is to build on their current schema (sometimes you have to build it into the lesson for new arrivals) so they can make neural connections between new and old information. #sstlap
A8: Passionate educators will never be satisfied with time. SS Ts need to focus on the skills that will enable Ss to continue to learn SS outside of the classroom. #sstlap
A8: My teacher candidates (ELED) have found that time on social studies is very limited. However, they were able to complete their field hours by getting creative and using the NCSS Thematic strands. ๐๐ผ๐ #sstlap
A8: IMHO its better to focus on skills over standards/content. The content is simply a way to apply the skills. Most people couldnโt tell you what they learned in their history class but theyโll use those skills forever. #sstlap
A8 This is a tough q for me bc I've never taught elementary but I think it seems like it should at least be easy to incorporate into LA if there isn't enough class time devoted just to social studies #sstlap
A8 I think it's easy (beause I love it). There are so many ways to teach it and current events keep what you're teaching fresh. I love it when students make a connection between history and what's happening today. #sstlap
Pirate Prof Question...while visiting with a principal pal, she reminded me that the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics was today. What is your favorite event and how could you incorporate this into your #sstlap lessons?
PPQ I am obsessed with the Olympics. I love it all, but especially the downhill skiing. I think I could use the games in teaching the growth mindset. #sstlap
My favorite Winter Olympics event is curling. Not to brag, but I went to high school with the sister of one of the guys on Team USA ๐บ๐ธ so Iโd like to tie that into a lesson & tell them about my personal connection #sstlap
Pirate Prof Question...while visiting with a principal pal, she reminded me that the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics was today. What is your favorite event and how could you incorporate this into your #sstlap lessons?
PPQ: Love ice skating. A @burgessdave idea was to have students bring socks to school and have โice skating racesโ in the hallways. Then compare times. It becomes math. #sstlap ๐๐ผ๐
I get what you're saying, but I think we're being negligent if any of our students can't find at least one historical figure they can relate to throughout our class. #sstlap
