A1 Know your students well enough to know their interests and passions and needs, then build lessons around those. #sstlap
  • CareyUSHistory Feb 8 @ 9:07 PM EST
A1: I think this is true in any subject area / grade, but you have to take the information off the page and make it come to life. Make it relevant to the students and help guide them toward a greater knowledge of self and content #sstlap
    In reply to @kiddielitprof
  • Ryan7Read Feb 8 @ 9:07 PM EST
A1: I've been moving towards Room transformation thanks to @hopekingteach & @WadeKing7 just changing things around that relate to what we are going to learn about. Starts the curiosity. #sstlap
  • MrRoughton Feb 8 @ 9:07 PM EST
A1) Consider it a blessing. Kids can't be burned out on it yet! Get them involved. DO history, don't just TEACH history. #sstlap
  • kiddielitprof Feb 8 @ 9:08 PM EST
A1: This was an interview question for me back in the day. โ€œHow do you get your students motivated?โ€ Answer...by being motivated yourself. #sstlap

A1: create activities and lessons that engage students fully aka simulations, collaboration, and make it memorable! #sstlap
  • MrKaplansKlass Feb 8 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1: By being excited about it yourself! Enthusiasm is contagious - if youโ€™re intrigued and engaged with your topic, hey will be too! Then, harness that intrigue into an assignment that makes the historical topic relavent and relatable to students! #sstlap

Hi Jared...Go Niners and love your pic! โ˜บ๏ธ #sstlap
  • SpeightEd Feb 8 @ 9:12 PM EST

    • kiddielitprof Feb 8 @ 9:06 PM EST
Q1: What are some of the best ways to get your students excited about social studies? Especially in elementary where the time is limited to 30 minutes 2 times a week? #sstlap
  • classroomtools Feb 8 @ 9:13 PM EST
A2 I've always sought to teach skills, not content, so the course topic is only relevant to the extent that its subject matter forms the material with which we practice skill development. #sstlap
  • MrRoughton Feb 8 @ 9:13 PM EST
A1) Crime scene investigations are also great. https://t.co/DmFmS9mpvN #sstlap
  • kiddielitprof Feb 8 @ 9:14 PM EST
A2: I love historical fiction childrenโ€™s literature so I choose history. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ˜Š Fave book is Snow Treasure by Marie McSwigan #sstlap
  • Ryan7Read Feb 8 @ 9:14 PM EST
A2: I'm a real believe in #ditchhw more time for students to learn and work. Not give them a ton of paper work they can google the answers for and then forget the next day. I teach real world application. #sstlap
  • MrRoughton Feb 8 @ 9:14 PM EST
I disagree completely. I don't learn much of anything from the Aztecs but they are still quite worth studying. #sstlap
    In reply to @SpeightEd
  • MrKaplansKlass Feb 8 @ 9:14 PM EST
A2: I could never choose; I love them all too much! So I would give my students the agency to make the choice. The best topic to students is one they care about and identify with. When students care, relate, and empathize with a topic social studies is at its prime! #sstlap
  • MrRoughton Feb 8 @ 9:15 PM EST

    • kiddielitprof Feb 8 @ 9:12 PM EST
Q2: If you could choose ONE social studies topic to teach, what would it be? #sstlap
  • classroomtools Feb 8 @ 9:19 PM EST
A3 Connect it in some way to popular culture. For example, https://t.co/6Z5UasHsD9 #sstlap
  • tsocko Feb 8 @ 9:19 PM EST
A3: Is it snarky to say that the answer is to never start with a lesson from a textbook? #sstlap
  • MrKaplansKlass Feb 8 @ 9:19 PM EST
A4: Make it into a jigsaw and provide a provocative, underlying question. Make them WANT to discover that information from the textbook so they can use it in the activities/discussion that follows! #sstlap
  • CHitch94 Feb 8 @ 9:19 PM EST
A3) Some of the questions in books can be good but definitely work them into activities, discussions, etc. rather than "book work." #sstlap
  • Meems852 Feb 8 @ 9:20 PM EST
A3 a quick and simple way to make a boring textbook lesson fun and engaging is to turn it into a game! I've taken basic question worksheets and cut them into strips and turned it into a relay race! Adding movement helps so much! #sstlap
  • kiddielitprof Feb 8 @ 9:20 PM EST
    Hi Raquel! Welcome! ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ #sstlap
  • book_techjunkie Feb 8 @ 9:20 PM EST
I was going to say the same. Get rid of the textbook and create an activity or full group discussion. #sstlap
    • tsocko Feb 8 @ 9:19 PM EST
A3: Is it snarky to say that the answer is to never start with a lesson from a textbook? #sstlap
  • LauraGarlow Feb 8 @ 9:20 PM EST
A3 my team likes to incorporate lots of Childrenโ€™s Lit & real world applications! Learning about the seasons weโ€™ve read books but then also go observe & experience them outside! #sstlap
  • MrRoughton Feb 8 @ 9:20 PM EST
A3) 1. Pick a better starting point. Barring that, 2. Make it an experience. #sstlap
  • Ryan7Read Feb 8 @ 9:21 PM EST
A3: I use questions or vocab terms into interaction lessons or into videos that engage my students more. Or expanding on images and terms with real experiences. #sstlap
  • MrRoughton Feb 8 @ 9:21 PM EST
Snarky can also be correct! #sstlap
    In reply to @tsocko
  • tsocko Feb 8 @ 9:21 PM EST
Exactly! Have students generate questions and then find resources to answer their own questions. #sstlap
    In reply to @book_techjunkie
  • SpeightEd Feb 8 @ 9:21 PM EST
A2: If I could only teach one topic, it would definitely be World War II. My great-Grandpa was a veteran in the 71st Infantry Division and the war lends itself to so many topics and themes when you zoom out from the battlefields themselves #sstlap
  • kiddielitprof Feb 8 @ 9:22 PM EST
Nope!! Not snarky at all. It is what they are finding they have to dindur JR field experience hours. #sstlap
    In reply to @tsocko
  • kiddielitprof Feb 8 @ 9:22 PM EST
    Hi Tracy!! โ˜บ๏ธ #sstlap
  • jmadlin001 Feb 8 @ 9:22 PM EST
A3 I'll be honest, I don't use the textbook lessons. I use the textbook to teach reading and annotating skills. #sstlap
  • LauraGarlow Feb 8 @ 9:22 PM EST
A3 connecting to other subjects also helps! During fall we collected & sorted leaves, counted them, & made leaf rubbings #sstlap
  • kiddielitprof Feb 8 @ 9:23 PM EST
Are you chomping at the bit for Q4 from the #smsu teacher candidates? :-D It's coming up in 1 minute. #sstlap
  • tsocko Feb 8 @ 9:23 PM EST
Hi! Glad to be able to join tonight. Olympics and #sstlap are a great combo.
    In reply to @kiddielitprof
  • MrRoughton Feb 8 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3) Anything you can make real, you should make real. My kids tried to stack rocks to make Inca style buildings this week. Took no time but they were way into it and totally got the learning. #sstlap
  • kiddielitprof Feb 8 @ 9:24 PM EST
Q4:How do you incorporate social studies lessons into lessons outside of your social studies time? How do you integrate social studies into all subjects? #sstlap
  • tsocko Feb 8 @ 9:25 PM EST
A4: If we teach themes rather than cram content, Ss will make connections constantly, especially in books they read and current news. #sstlap
  • kiddielitprof Feb 8 @ 9:25 PM EST
Oops...my teacher candidates are having to use a text in their field experiences. #sstlap
    In reply to @tsocko
  • MrRoughton Feb 8 @ 9:26 PM EST
A4) Sadly, we don't. It's the other way around. WE incorporate the other subjects. You know, the ones that count. ๐Ÿ˜  #sstlap
  • classroomtools Feb 8 @ 9:26 PM EST
A4 Everything has a history. In science, look at the history of whatever science topic you're studying. In English, read historical literature, and write about historical topics. In Music ed, look at the history of instruments, compositions, composers, etc. #sstlap
  • Ryan7Read Feb 8 @ 9:26 PM EST
A4: Oh I always do a little bit here and there. I talked about making pitches for marketing in my #3dprinting lesson. I took logos and moved them into a pixel art lesson in multimedia. I create story suit types using @Ozobot I like to mix. #sstlap
  • CHitch94 Feb 8 @ 9:27 PM EST
A4) I teach at high school level but definitely incorporated math and science. Reading & writing skills always worked on. #sstlap
  • tsocko Feb 8 @ 9:27 PM EST
I would love to see a teacher training program that shuns text books, especially in social studies. #sstlap

A3: Getting students active or bringing in some of their interests. Giving them voice and choice in projects and activities goes a long way as well. #sstlap
    • kiddielitprof Feb 8 @ 9:18 PM EST
Q3: How do you take a lesson from your teacher's manual/textbook and make it fun and engaging for students? #sstlap
  • LauraGarlow Feb 8 @ 9:27 PM EST
A4 one of my favorites was we practiced counting through a Build a City game, but of course, first we had to explore cities & skyscrapers on Google Maps. Social & Math and they loved it!!! #sstlap
  • Ryan7Read Feb 8 @ 9:28 PM EST
I think you would enjoy it, or be very very scared or both. #sstlap
    In reply to @kiddielitprof, @Ozobot
  • Meems852 Feb 8 @ 9:28 PM EST
A4 Our LA dept has to incorporate a lot of nonfiction but they don't integrate w/ us for some reason? They teach Ss Oh Captain My Captain at the beginning of the yr but we don't teach Civil War until the end. Could be so much more powerful if we did it at the same time! #sstlap
  • LauraGarlow Feb 8 @ 9:28 PM EST
Glad I found a team of teachers to work with who prefer to integrate social studies instead of following the textbook #sstlap
    In reply to @tsocko, @MrRoughton, @kiddielitprof

A4 If you need a real world topic to have students practice simple arithmetic and direction following skills, teach them to complete a 1040EZ (especially in March and early April). https://t.co/Z2Jm8DApnX #sstlap
  • book_techjunkie Feb 8 @ 9:29 PM EST
A4. My elementary teachers found that integrated units allows for S.S. to be brought in easier. It allowed them to focus on reading yet look at social issues. #sstlap
  • kiddielitprof Feb 8 @ 9:29 PM EST

I did my teacher training quite a while ago (graduated in '94) and don't remember there being much emphasis on textbooks, especially for SS education. That wasn't the case in the actual classrooms, though. #sstlap

Q4:How do you incorporate social studies lessons into lessons outside of your social studies time? How do you integrate social studies into all subjects? #sstlap
  • Ryan7Read Feb 8 @ 9:31 PM EST
A5: I do this during my resume unit. I have Ss write down short and long term goals. Then write down what others say about them and then create a manifesto that represents them. Then they use that going forward writing their resumes and dreams of careers. #sstlap
  • jmadlin001 Feb 8 @ 9:31 PM EST
A4 I team teach with an ELA teacher. Right now we're working on a unit we've called "Well behaved women rarely make history". She is reading Malala's book with them. We are also working with the math and science teacher. #sstlap

Make it real world applicable. Something they can see/do participate in. The "Big Picture" absrtract ideas are not easy for them so making it that they can see/touch/do #sstlap
  • tsocko Feb 8 @ 9:33 PM EST
A5: Teach them to connect to their community. Build sense of citizenship from early age. Also teach them how to search the internet responsibly! #sstlap

Q6: Similar to the last question, these teacher candidates need to know tools and strategies you use to include students who have special needs in social studies instruction. #sstlap
  • tsocko Feb 8 @ 9:36 PM EST
Exactly! In an effort to be "inclusive" we have excluded the needs of our learners. Frustrating. #sstlap

A5 donโ€™t keep social studies separate!!! Kinders (and all ECE) are immersed in Social studies all day! Use themes for the seasons & have it cross all subject areas. They also are learning about their community & being friends, so provide real life opportunities #sstlap
  • kiddielitprof Feb 8 @ 9:37 PM EST
    Hi Andrew!! ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ #sstlap
  • tsocko Feb 8 @ 9:38 PM EST
A6: SS has so many entry points. UDL is key to making SS inclusive for all. #sstlap
  • Meems852 Feb 8 @ 9:39 PM EST
A6 Allow SPED students to show their knowledge in alternative ways. I had some SPED Ss who built lego scenes and explained them instead of writing an essay. If you are just grading content knowledge this can be very useful for them! #sstlap
  • MrRoughton Feb 8 @ 9:39 PM EST
A6) Lots of reading support. Learning basic strategies like creating visuals as they read helps a ton. #sstlap
  • CHitch94 Feb 8 @ 9:39 PM EST
A6) Newsela is a great source for finding leveled readings for SS classes. Also try to use variety of presentation styles to let students explore content - video, audio, text, images. #sstlap
  • classroomtools Feb 8 @ 9:39 PM EST
But one of the things our learners need most is to learn the stories of those who've been marginalized and excluded. When that is allowed to continue, those groups will continue to be abused. #sstlap

A6 I've had SPED students mainstreamed into my classes for 25 yrs. I've learned that you need to differentiate and be flexible in how they show you what they've learned. Technology is great for differentiating. #sstlap

Bit by bit we are getting there. So many questions, so little time. Bridling Q7 now...be there in 1 minute. #sstlap

Completely agree, but there are many ways to do this. Content cram does not build empathy or critical thinking. #sstlap

  • MrKoz31 Feb 8 @ 9:49 PM EST
A7: The key to teaching ELLs is to build on their current schema (sometimes you have to build it into the lesson for new arrivals) so they can make neural connections between new and old information. #sstlap
  • MrRoughton Feb 8 @ 9:49 PM EST

  • MrKoz31 Feb 8 @ 9:52 PM EST
A8: IMHO its better to focus on skills over standards/content. The content is simply a way to apply the skills. Most people couldnโ€™t tell you what they learned in their history class but theyโ€™ll use those skills forever. #sstlap

We are almost ready to kick off our boots and relax (well I am maybe not the teacher candidates). :-) One last question in 1 minute...#sstlap
  • Meems852 Feb 8 @ 9:53 PM EST
A8 This is a tough q for me bc I've never taught elementary but I think it seems like it should at least be easy to incorporate into LA if there isn't enough class time devoted just to social studies #sstlap
  • jmadlin001 Feb 8 @ 9:53 PM EST
A8 I think it's easy (beause I love it). There are so many ways to teach it and current events keep what you're teaching fresh. I love it when students make a connection between history and what's happening today. #sstlap
  • kiddielitprof Feb 8 @ 9:54 PM EST
Pirate Prof Question...while visiting with a principal pal, she reminded me that the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics was today. What is your favorite event and how could you incorporate this into your #sstlap lessons?

PPQ I love figure skating and ice hockey the best! Could maybe do a hockey shot review game! #sstlap
  • jmadlin001 Feb 8 @ 9:57 PM EST
PPQ I am obsessed with the Olympics. I love it all, but especially the downhill skiing. I think I could use the games in teaching the growth mindset. #sstlap
  • LauraGarlow Feb 8 @ 9:57 PM EST
My favorite Winter Olympics event is curling. Not to brag, but I went to high school with the sister of one of the guys on Team USA ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ so Iโ€™d like to tie that into a lesson & tell them about my personal connection #sstlap
  • MrKoz31 Feb 8 @ 9:57 PM EST
Without a doubt, ๐ŸฅŒ. Maybe do a review game and give teams a knock hockey puck as a โ€œstoneโ€ for each correct answer??? #sstlap

  • kiddielitprof Feb 8 @ 9:58 PM EST
PPQ: Love ice skating. A @burgessdave idea was to have students bring socks to school and have โ€œice skating racesโ€ in the hallways. Then compare times. It becomes math. #sstlap ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ˜Š
