A1: we run a middle screen. Receiver comes under all 5 linemen. Tackles pick up OLB, guards pick up next LB, Center is either on safety or middle LB (we play a lot of 3-3 stacks). Works like a charm. Block for 2, throw to the outside. #hogfbchat
A1. The most effective screen we ran this year was our CTR Screen. Backside guard pulls while the C to T front side release. C is force, G caps ILB, and T runs the alley looking for safety. #hogfbchat
A1 screen game as always been solid wherever Inhave been. Rocket and Bubble were our best, but had a lot of success with middle screen this year to. The boys did a great job with it this year. #Hogfbchat
A1: I’m a fan of all screens but the most effective and best one is the tunnel screen. Lock on tackles and release G/C/G to tunnel side. WR must come to the blockers as he gets the ball. Then get vertical. #HogFBChat
A1: the one I’ve seen the most consistent success with is just the old fashioned tunnel screen where C-PST all run their landmarks BSG runs flatter angle to pick up trash, BST sets hard inside and runs the DE upfield. You can do it a million ways though #hogfbchat
A1- our slow screen to RB imo. We got better at our tunnels etc as season went on. But consistently we produced more on the “traditional” RB screens. #Hogfbchat
A1: I think it was fast screen because we ran well. We had success with tunnel screen, but we didn’t always get a hat on a hat for some reason. #hogfbchat
A1) This past season we had some MASSIVE success with our middle RB screen we called “BAM”. All five linemen set, then release up to second level. RB slips underneath DL, OL has LB/S, and it’s off to the races against aggressive teams. #HogFBChat
A1: Depends on our personnel that year. We don’t ask our slower guys to screen, so we scheme around our more mobile linemen. Love to run a screen after defense makes a big play and starts getting cocky #hogfbchat
A1 in trips a screen in the middle to #2 (he just cuts straight down the los), not the easiest to get past the DE or olb but interior DL are not a threat so we get double on inside backers and makes it easy up to safety #hogfbchat
A1: This one (see reply). It's the only screen we ran this past season...baby steps. Got pretty good at it though. Two-way screen with slip on one side and tunnel on the other. #hogfbchat
A1: swing to RB single or 2 wr side. WR crack 1st LB inside of him. PST clubs DE then kicks CB. PSG leads to Safety. C and BSG kick and seal for WR tunnel on backside if DE peels with RB #Hogfbchat
A1: we put our tackles out on our “now” screens to our outside receivers. I love it because even if they dodge us the block is effective but every once in a while we wreck a DB and the OL coach (me) goes nuts on the sideline #HogFBChat
A1: don't run many screens mostly tunnel but also do a throwback screen off of our waggle that has been effective releasing our backside T, C, and roll side G. #hogfbchat
A1: RB middle, easiest concept for them to understand. Usually a numbers win as well.
Ball is snapped, we look like a closed fist, on release we look like a hand opening up with the fingers spread
#hogfbchat
Fast/now, get it out asap, for us we have the line just block it like toss, so no new blocking scheme. Sometimes we "boss" it with the tb, or fake across and get Emol away. Other times we can tag a te post if the safety is crashing hard.
A1. We suck at screen game. But don't work it much or use them much. Best we have we call ghetto screen, 1-2 by OL and let your guy go to block first bad guy you see wing fakes block and sets up behind C.
Usually lazy dl picks it off #Hogfbchat
A1- we slide protect so we have front side TGC release to LB’s and Safety. Backside slide protects. Lots of room to grow here but at times we were solid #HogFbChat
A1 fastscreen is the easiest and highest percentage. OLine blocking is more inexact but if you rep it and give landmarks they begin to get real comfortable with it. #Hogfbchat
A1: Did not run many traditonal screens but when we did they were effective! We send out tackle to the first counted defender, guard to 2 and center to 3. Try to get a kick and a wrap. I explain it as blocking counter out wide! #hogfbchat
A1: swing to RB single or 2 wr side. WR crack 1st LB inside of him. PST clubs DE then kicks CB. PSG leads to Safety. C and BSG kick and seal for WR tunnel on backside if DE peels with RB #Hogfbchat
A1: love the tunnel screen for OL. Pass set, punch, then attack 2nd level. Allows any blitz pressure thru, focuses blocking on coverage. Straightforward to install & rep. Consistent landmarks for OL #hogfbchat
A1: Delayed screen releasing Tackle and Guard. Saw a lot of soft man this year so to combat that we would play action the running back like counter trey and then slip him out. Helped getting him lost in the flow when he was getting man to man vs. a line backer!! #HogFbChat
Love slip screen to boundary, especially if playing off. know from a D perspective, if you have athletic linemen it creates major issues inside, as well as screen n go, corners eyes must be 💯#HogFbChat
A1) Jail break screen with T, G, C.
#1 WR 2 steps vert and 2 steps back.
OL vertical sets for 1-2 and gets flat down the line
Tackle has #1 threat, Guard has Alley defender, Center has first to show. #Hogfbchat
A1: ours was definitely the alley
PST: ride and flatten the DE
PSG: number 2
C: number 3
BSG: RAT KILL aka clean up
BST: Ride and flatten backside DE
#Hogfbchat
A1: we put our tackles out on our “now” screens to our outside receivers. I love it because even if they dodge us the block is effective but every once in a while we wreck a DB and the OL coach (me) goes nuts on the sideline #HogFBChat
now most effective overall would just be a bubble outside after running a bunch of option, SS cheats up and in vs Twins over to stop pitch and power, #hogfbchat
A1 cont: We weren’t much of a screen team before this year, but I think adding it was a big part of our success. It made us harder to defend, for sure. #hogfbchat
Our jail break screen has been good. All but BST set with high hat for 1 count, then out. PST kicks out, PSG and C wraps, BSG rat kills whoever is chasing. Key is getting out QUICKLY #Hogfbchat
A1: we had a tunnel screen we ran this year that we ran well in practice for some reason we couldn't get the blocking right in a game. Will work on it this year more to make it more successful. Lots of work in the summer on 2nd level blocking. #hogfbchat
Tunnel was our most successful screen play 2 years ago at 15 yards a pop. Hit it 4 times for 50 plus yard td's. Spent at least 10 minutes an offensive practice repping it in half line drills. #hogfbchat
A1: To Block - Slip Screen. Getting the PS T and G out in space with the WR working back to QB catching ball behind them. Need athletic T and G able to work in space though #hogfbchat
Q1: We had 2 bubbles that were moderately successful, the tag determined which WR got it. Had a jailbreak and tunnel, but rarely ran them in games. #HogFBChat
A1: also a big fan of sprint out protection for 3 steps and then running the WR tunnel backside with the PSG kicking Rover, C seal BSLB, and BSG parting the seas to the Safety #hogfbchat
A1: we ran a middle screen with our TE that worked real well... pass pro for a 2 count, then straight up field, TE 2 count block, reverse pivot into the middle and go #hogfbchat
A1: the tunnel/jailbreak screen, since the WR is moving towards the LOS it happens so quickly so it allows the OL to get upfield on PS pretty quick #Hogfbchat
@HogFbChat
Love this and got some dividends from it our empty diamond ✅
Where are teams setting weak side safety put into bdy read #'s & Leverage from safeties down....clean matchup vs solo wr if cov. Is kicked!
#Hogfbchat
We've had OL block stretch away from our "Nows" and Bubbles. However, we started blocking inside zone away and locking the T to occupy that DE to the screen side #Hogfbchat
A1: In reference to the screen question, How CRITICAL are angles for your OL? I personally think that is just as important as athletic ability if not more #HogFBChat
A1: secret to screen game is repetition. We had a 10 min screen session every day. Up tempo. Give them a clock between plays. Can even be on air. It’s all about timing #Hogfbchat
A2: they aren’t really decoys, but we will run rocket to one side (T picks up corner, G gets OLB, and C picks up MDM) and then a back side chop screen where the BST picks up OLB and G picks up ILB. #hogfbchat
A2: we did a boot throwback that was successful. The oline blocked boot right but it was a screen back to left. Im not sure if thats what you mean or not? #Hogfbchat
A2: We ran boundary Quick Screen to the X while the OL ran Buck Sweep to the field. Screen side OT released inside the DE then turned and ran outside for the CB. #hogfbchat
A1: In reference to the screen question, How CRITICAL are angles for your OL? I personally think that is just as important as athletic ability if not more #HogFBChat
Yes we started pretty much doing that this year after our WR got smashed by a CB triggering. IMO, the key is just to not get held up, don't really have to sell the pass all that well to be successful #Hogfbchat
A2: We didn’t, but I saw an OC this year have all his OL vertical set really hard, run 4 receivers out of 5 in an empty set on Verts, and have the 5th run a shallow across the LOS. Said he was “running a screen without the OL” interesting concept. He Carved people up #hogfbchat
A2 not quite a decoy but our best screen (not what was asked in q1) would just be a bubble outside after running a bunch of option, SS cheats up and in vs Twins over to stop pitch and power, oline ls driving through Playside shoulder like stretch #hogfbchat
A2: we slash a back or run jet motion away from most of our screens. so we have the at least center, guard and tackle away from the screen make it look like outside zone or jet to pull people away from the screen. #HogFbChat
A2: 3 years ago we did a TE screen. Rolled out one way with the playside guard leading up and threw back to the TE with the backside lineman leading for him #Hogfbchat
A2: It isn't that we are using our OL as decoys, but on our Jet Tunnel Screen, our OL of C, G, T block Jet. Other way is G and T blocking Tunnel Screen. QB reads secondary rotation or LB flow to give or throw screen. #hogfbchat
See much more false pulls in run game than screen game but I like the look off slip/swing look and come backside. Pnp Patience and protection always seems 🔑 in developing that play #HogFbChat
A2: we didn’t but I do like what Auburn did this year with their power screen. Power right screen left with three down blocks leading the way. #HogFbChat
A2: We do not unless you’re counting the RPO factor. We would motion the running back out of the backfield and throw screen away from the motion. But the line always punched and reached to playside. Not ideal to get flow going away from the play but it worked for us. #HogFbChat
A2: Not on purpose, could look like it on double reads but no decoys. We played around with a slip screen away from counter action with all the down blocks going out for screen but never ran it. #hogfbchat
#HogFbChat A2: we blocked fast screen this year where tackles always went flat on their side. Guards took their angle and center read the safeties and went to most dangerous. OL never knew which side screen was until it was thrown.
A1: We ran slip screens to our rb and our slot. 2 Mississippi count for release. Get down field and find opposite colors.
PST: Wash DE up field.
PSG: Flattest path.
C: Aiming for SAM to S.
BSG: Aiming for MIKE to FS.
BST: Wash DE up field. 1st defender #Hogfbchat
Oh no doubt, it was really good, when I go to calling plays one day I’ll use it, just tag the shallow and make sure they know out of that formation it’s very shallow, just gotta be able to block it up for long enough to clear and get backers bailing #HogFBChat
A3 full team screen drill best to get timing with everyone in order to master the skill. Can work the angles in Indy but makes it easier together. #hogfbchat
A3: 10 minutes a day in pre practice screen period. Made us SOOOOO much better. Reps on reps on reps. Also running them in the off-season with dummies or trash cans as landmarks #hogfbchat
Half way point. A good time to remind free agents and later comers that we have a PE/OL opening at Telfair County HS (GA) you'd be the 2nd person to get a job at TCHS via the chat but hey it's ok being #2 DM me or our HC @CoachMBurleson#hogfbchat
A3: Because we really only ran one screen last season, reps were key. We repped the same play over and over in small group indy, inside run, team, etc. Various looks, various skill (sometimes against our starting D). #hogfbchat
A3, would love to hear answers on this, unfortunately we missed blocks a bunch of times this past year. We work near foot shimmy, as if we were breaking down to tackle. Not sure that’s a drill but it’s the verbiage I use #Hogfbchat
A3: Use 4x4 cone boxes. Have players pull to box where there is a defender that they do a quick mirror drill with then drive out of box. Simulates breaking down and getting under control of defender. #hogfbchat
A3) From a skills stand point, I like to work throwing pads at my QBs mid body up (represent DL hands) so my QBs get on tippy toes to drop screen ball off. Getting on tippy toes helps see a lot better. From a QB stand point vision is very critical on screens #hogfbchat
A2: We haven’t. Would love to see film on teams doing it. Seems like a concept that would only be successfully you were a high % screen team. #Hogfbchat
A3: there is no drill that works screens like integrating them into your team time. Commit to throwing them and rep them often. They’re all timing. So OLine running to landmarks on air is best drill. In my opinion #hogfbchat
A3: Screen period!! Coaching skill guys to break to grass or follow the blocks, and teaching OL not to chase skinny boys... get on the tracks and create havoc. #HogFbChat
A3: No fancy drill. Just full 10 minute group sessions with OL and WR devoted to it. Insert in Team script often. Rep early in season then hit again as needed. If you're going to use it, better rep it. #hogfbchat
A3- depends on the screen being blocked. We focus on pass pro fundamentals initially, oversetting, releasing and having a defender in space trying to juke. Makes our guys break down in space. Certainly something we need to get better at. #HogFBChat
A3: we always teach it live and rep it live in a full team drill. Instruct the scout team that it is a Screen period and give them a specific job that they must do. Also work it in during Team period
#hogfbchat
Pre season - set up stand ups etc at land mark work half lines with set, club, release run thru stand up in season- rep assignment in group while rehashing fundy then pd 1 every wed is screen period. #HogFbChat
We got the most work, working plays only one side , and setting trash canes up for dline, and cones for their landmarks, also have used tires that have been cut in half instead of cans. Working just one side u can get more reps in faster
A3: to be honest we just ran it in team. Didnt have enough practice time for a screen blocking period. Have a few 2nd level blocking drills that im looking to use this year that should help with screen blocking #Hogfbchat
We run something we call screen drill where we set up half lines and a D across. We walk through the play and then run play to both sides. I have my OL change sides unless they are specifically playing one position. #hogfbchat
A3)we layed dummies on ground. Screen set and had them run and pick up dummies. Created fast reps and worked having head on a swivel making sure we had everyone blocked if there was a dummy left, we know who we missed. Also helps with angles. #HogFBChat
A3. We open up every Tuesday with team screen. Script the main screens for the week, and force OL to run their lanes. As for blocking--blocking in space progression, downfield cutting, and finish off with a cutting circuit with tackling rings and step overs. #HogFBChat
A3- We use barrels to stay in path and cut dummies. Then rep it with half-line with team. Lots of reps, move the attack team and leave no doubt on who is who on the perimeter. #hogfbchat
A3: we run screens on air, because scout players don't make smart choices when they know the play coming. Typically I will stand in as the defender and play it out how we think it will go. #Hogfbchat
A3: when our skill guys go to pass skelly, our OL spends that period doing pass pro, blitz pick up, and screen period. We let the OL who aren't in play the role of the receivers which they get a kick out of. Keeps it fresh and fun. #hogfbchat
A3: We set trashcans as landmarks during our screen period. They work their kicks then release to landmarks. IF I have extra guys, I'll set them out there instead...
#hogfbchat
A3) With anything it is prioritizing time for it. We will do a screen period on air to teach concepts, landmarks, and timing at 1st. Once we get better at that we add blockers with dummies and eventually a live defense. Teach it in progressions and make it a priority. #hogfbchat
A3: there is no drill that works screens like integrating them into your team time. Commit to throwing them and rep them often. They’re all timing. So OLine running to landmarks on air is best drill. In my opinion #hogfbchat
A3. Run it once vs scout team, watch lazy DL blow it up since they don't move, HC freaks out, I yell at scout to rush QB and run it again, then cheating scout LB blow it up, HC freaks again. Run it in game for 1st down. #HogFBChat
A3: Repetition against a scout D. Repetition Repetition Repetition. W/out going against a live D, VERY tough to get a feel for timing, execution (how it'll go down in a game) #hogfbchat
A3: We didn’t run drills for this purpose, I believe repetition gives us the most bang for our buck. However, if I found a drill I liked I wouldn’t be opposed to be incorporating it. #Hogfbchat
A3. Cont. Sorry teach elem. PE, need some humor this time of year so I don't lose my mind. we do this run screens often but trying to contribute... #HogFBChat
A3 honestly didn't drill it, we worked blocking in space in our reach and play action drill and our guys understood get a hand on those little guys and the back makes you right, and if he (lb/db) doesn't dodge out of his leverage you dont have to teach a hog to eat #hogfbchat
A3 cont: we also drill the hell out of movement and have the D react to what’s going on. We KIND OF teach landmarks, but landmarks change with movement. So we try and prep them to be able to adapt. #hogfbchat
#Hogfbchat A3 remind them that it's regular pass Pro for 2 seconds... I like them to sprint out the first three to five steps, get the eyes to the belt, chop and drop... at worst make contact, at best pancake. HC likes them to go for broke, little deceleration
A3 bonus:
Screen period rules
1. DL and blitzers must go full speed after the QB, push-ups if you don’t
2. LBs and DBs read and react. Drop and then respond to what happens in front of you
3. OL get your release and go to your area or assignment, then “look for work”
#hogfbchat
A3- one thing lost in this is that OL are rarely as athletic as OLB’s and S’s. We never drill blocking stationary objects except when teaching it first time because an OL will never screen block a stationary defender. #HogFBChat
Bodies or trash cans to establish land marks. reps on reps of punch throw and go. Usually start defenders shallow to emphasize taking a flatter angle because we all know the defender is usually more athletic than us lol #hogfbchat
A3: screen drill against air. Lots of reps. Makes screens second nature. No contact but as I stated before if we can just get in the way for most of our screens we win that play. Spot a ball every 5 yards and throw screens. #HogFbChat
A3: when we majored in screens I ran a lot of Cage drill in INDY. Now we work a 10 min screen period with the skills every Tuesday. Give rough landmarks/targets. My screen mantra is OUT-UP-IN. Out up in leads the eyes and feet in open field
#HogFbChat
A3: “Straight Down the line drill” for outside screens. OL runs straight down the LOS. this over coaches the point and let’s WRs block inside while you clean up the CB and clear the alley. #hogfbchat
Heard a great speaker say they use kicks and not seconds counting because:
A) Not everyone counts at the same speed
B) The kids count too fast when the bullets start flying. It was never as long as they wanted.
#hogfbchat
A4: I’ve always loved the RB swing screen to one side with a middle screen to wr backside... double screen... just never been able to make it click. Thing of beauty when it’s well run.
#HogFbChat
A4: have tried the jailbreak screen with minimal success. Would like to perfect that. Like the split screen with slow on one side and tunnel on other. #hogfbchat
A6: Timing was good - it both allowed me to do other things and it provided time to think.
I’m also fond of the time for the start of the event. It’s currently 3:48 AM here, so #hogfbchat, however great, normally starts a little too late for me to participate.
#dinosaurFBchat
A4: for years been wanting to link our slow screen with our 5 step game (4 verticals with slow screen as check down). Have seen some people running power read with c and bst releasing for backside rocket. #hogfbchat
A4) Our Oklahoma screen we need to run, read the DE with the swing from the RB, if he goes, throw tunnel backside, if he sits, throw swing to RB. Should have ran it with great RB but just didn't. Too many toys to play with I guess. #hogfbchat
A4: I want to see some film on the double screen and see how different people talk the various positions through them. Very interesting play in my opinion #hogfbchat
A4: I love the oz action boot throwback screen. We had a variation of it last year that never looked right in practice so we never ran it in a game. I’ve seen it a lot this year off jet or play action. #HogFBChat
A4: Honestly we run the gambit. Middle screen, slow/slip screen, bubble, jailbreak, rocket, etc. if I see a screen that I like I’ll try and draw it up to run it. #hogfbchat
A4: Not for me to decide. I guess whatever one works...I’m not into plays looking cool or being the smartest guy in the room. I just want to score and win. #hogfbchat
A4: we had a team that ran a play action TE screen away from the TB action that looked smooth and worked even better. We saw it on film while scouting for them, thankfully they never ran it against us. #Hogfbchat
A4: I’ve always loved the RB swing screen to one side with a middle screen to wr backside... double screen... just never been able to make it click. Thing of beauty when it’s well run.
#HogFbChat
A4. Not I have seen but want to try a TE throw back screen off our split side belly play. Would help get our HC on board if the TE wasnt basically our 3rd tackle. #HogFBChat
I've been seeing some double screens that I'm very intrigued by... releasing o line both directions... anybody run one? Is side pre determined or is there a read key for the QB? #HogFBChat
A4: Jailbreak screen... we're athletic enough to do it up front... we were just so good in our outside quick game that we lived off of it this season...
#hogfbchat
We ran this 5 years ago. Saw Urban Meyer run it when he was at Utah. They played Pitt in the Bowl Game and took it for a TD. Loved it ever since. Ours wasn't quite that effective. #hogfbchat
A4: Slot Receiver Screen. Have seen a couple of college teams using them and want to study them to have another way to get the ball in space to get a favorable matchup. #HogFBChat
I've been seeing some double screens that I'm very intrigued by... releasing o line both directions... anybody run one? Is side pre determined or is there a read key for the QB? #HogFBChat
A4) I really like the screens where the OL sells OZ one way for three steps and then the PST-C put on the brakes and go back the other way to block for the tunnel screen #hogfbchat
A4: This is a tough one. We don’t really run a true tunnel screen. We looked at putting it in late in the season but never ran it in a game. We run so many different screens well that we never really missed having a tunnel. #HogFbChat
I've been seeing some double screens that I'm very intrigued by... releasing o line both directions... anybody run one? Is side pre determined or is there a read key for the QB? #HogFBChat
A4: The Tunnel Screen to the #3 receiver in Trips. We run a ton of Bubble and by having him start on his bubble track then come back on a tunnel screen is great. Messed around with it in practice. Couldn't get the timing quite right. #hogfbchat
A4: I would like to run a tunnel screen / midline screen. Seen it work very well consistently. Maybe wherever i coach next will let us do that... #Hogfbchat
A4: did the Carolina panthers run a screen with jet motion and almost ran a middle screen to their trailing H back 2 weeks ago? I might be imagining this but it was pretty creative. Maybe a 2 point play? #HogFbChat
A4 it’s not really for linemen but the 3x1 wr drag with 3 wideouts blocking up for it is intriguing. Gotta be good at 4 verts to make this fit #HogFBChat
A4: I really liked the throwback screen off of speed sweep that auburn ran against uga this year I've been working on how we can adapt it to our system #hogfbchat
A4: it’s tough with screens because I feel like there are only so many options. But flow and a hand off one way with a backside qb delayed screen is tough. Especially in the goal line when you know you are getting man to man. #HogFBChat
We do this with our rocket. PST picks up number one, PSG number 2, and C MDM. WR gets inside our PSG. Back side is BST out to number one, BSG to number 2 and RB swings out. #hogfbchat
I've been seeing some double screens that I'm very intrigued by... releasing o line both directions... anybody run one? Is side pre determined or is there a read key for the QB? #HogFBChat
A4: More refined version of slipscreens, They're safe and I like a quick WR or Slot moving to QB when catching... couple a big guys in front of him and BOOM. #hogfbchat
A4 at past stops ran screens off jet action opposite of jet direction that was good and looking to incorporate more against the flow type stuff #hogfbchat
Would like y’all opinion on this: This TD was called back due to snapper interference in All Star game last week. Changed dynamic of game. Anyone see it or can interpret for me? Asking for a friend. #hogfbchat
We appreciate you all so much for joining us tonight and being a part of this great fraternity! Huge thanks also go to the best cohost @CoachDingus for everything he does week by week #HogFBChat
Love the empty slip screen especially against teams that blitz empty. We blitz empty and if you don’t drop ends vs empty slip your DC is 😱😱😱😱 #HogFbChat
If anybody has any questions or topics that you would like discussed please don’t hesitate to DM myself or @CoachDingus with the ideas and we will get to them on the chat #HogFBChat
Thank you guys for truly making each Monday night special for us all, whether you participate, lurk or just drop in occasionally. We appreciate and value you all! #HogFBChat
I’ve been your cohost Tony Shiffman and I’m looking forward to the next #Hogfbchat PROBABLY not until after the holidays but we will keep you all in the loop! Again thank you all and everybody have a Merry Christmas!
