A1: as we strive to be life-long learners. I believe the role a makerspace in a classroom environment would create life-long learners through exciting, real-world projects. #FCSVanguard
A1: it allows students to think creatively on a task and allows students to think together to solve a task. I love putting them in centers sometimes and for brain breaks :) #fcsvanguard
A1: Makerspaces and the idea of a "maker" have a place in PBL- the focus on the learning and the process and the investigation. Makerspaces can provide that opportunity for PBL to go deeper and allow for more investigation and a greater choice in creating a product. #fcsvanguard
A2 our media center always has makerspace available for students. It allows them to be creative, problem solve, and take part in real world connections #fcsvanguard
A2: Collaboration, creativity, problem solving, voice and choice...I could keep going. And for the skeptics, it’s so simple to tie in standards! #FCSVanguard
#FCSVanguard
A6-I have been using.m standards based approach to all of my rubrics so that students have a good understanding of where they are and where they are going
A2: Why shouldn't they?! :) The ability to create outside the regular tools inside the classroom opens up a world of possibilities for students. New experiences, new tools, new perspectives- all of this is a win in my book. #fcsvanguard
#fcsvanguard A2: Maker spaces stimulate a heightened level creativity while building up a critical 21st century skill- Knowledge Construction. #MIEExpert
A2: Now that I know a little bit about what they are, I see a lot of STEAM, Claim, Evidence & Reasoning (New Scientific Method) and PBL which apparently has been the same for a while. They would be a necessity and would bridge gaps in learning. #fcsVanguard
A2 Makerspaces should be built in schools to spark creativity and to give students a chance show what they know outside of the regular classroom environment. #FCSVanguard
A3: S’s need time to explore. It’s not effective having a time clock like other areas of study. Just like T’s need planning time to create plans/activities, S’s need time to explore and freely learn. #fcsvanguard
A3. Teachers need to know and understand the way that their students learn. They should also be able to think creatively when planning for different learning styles #FCSVanguard
A1. Sorry, y’all! Atlanta traffic is a beast. Don’t really understand Makerspaces. Can someone direct me to a place to learn more and how I could use it in middle school social studies? Haven’t scrolled thru yet. #FCSVANGUARD
My first answer is nothing 🤷🏾♀️ I think as a facilitator, you may need to know how to draft/find tasks that will lend itself to students utilizing items in a makerspace. My 2nd answer, what items should/could be included in a makerspace #FCSVanguard
A3: Teachers definitely need simple ways to incorporate Makerspaces. If it is too difficult o start or too time consuming to finish, then most teachers will avoid it. A systematic approach to adding Makerspaces to learning would be helpful. #fcsvanguard
A1: For me, PBL is more of problem based learning rather than project based. akerspaces help students to utilize critical thinking and problem solving skills. #fcsvanguard
A3: teachers really need to have routines and procedures when using makerspace to avoid chaos. Also keeping the spaces stocked with supplies! #fcsvanguard
A1: as we strive to be life-long learners. I believe the role a makerspace in a classroom environment would create life-long learners through exciting, real-world projects. #FCSVanguard
A3 Teachers need to know to incorporate the use of Makerspaces in their instruction that it must be student focus and student led to be successful. #FCSVanguard
Students become learning sleuths, in my opinion, solving educational enigmas from what I have seen from the few examples I learned about so far this evening, #fcsvanguard
A4 they must work collaboratively with peers, there are multiple possibilities to solve the problem & it can fit into any content area. They learn from failure. #FCSVANGUARD
A4: students are able to express their understanding con content and demonstrate skills that are not always taught through other exercises #FCSVanguard
Students become learning sleuths, in my opinion, solving educational enigmas from what I have seen from the few examples I learned about so far this evening, #fcsvanguard
@kerjshor So true! I believe this alone "scares" teachers away from experimenting or trying something new. #fcsvanguard Always remember to reach out for help from colleagues.
A4: Anything new excites the brain and helps learning and engagement to take place- new places, new resources, new ideas- new tools and learning environments. Add the discovery, investigation and creation aspect and that is a recipe for brain based learning #fcsvanguard
A4 Trying to get over the gimmick hump can be done with some deeper look at the lessons available for the technolgy by the teacher. The kids can then gain learning that will help them meet the standards. #fcsvanguard
A2: Makerspaces should be utilized in schools to spark discovery and give students opportunities to have hands on experiences working with concepts they recently learned #fcsvanguard
A1: maker spaces could be closely tied to PBL if they are a space to utilize throughout the unit to explore standards based ideas, or to spark new creations #FCSVanguard
A4: students love it! I use many science based ones that allows the students to be hands on with the learning. If students can see, touch, and hear what they are learning in first person they retain the information a lot better. #FCSvanguard
A2: maker spaces belong because they serve as a space to break down barriers between groups of students and learning. Our #HBMSHawks space pulls in some kids you would never expect to do work you would never expect! #FCSVanguard@EllenReagin
A3: teachers need to know how to set up parameters for exploration. This is not just important in the maker space, but also in the classroom in teaching in a personalized environment. #FCSVanguard
A4: Students benefit in so many ways! I love that when they struggle with an activity, they do not give up, the keep trying, without frustration taking over. And once they have success they cannot hide their excitement! #FCSVANGUARD
A5: After our Creek/Cherokee unit we went to the Makerspace to create artifacts from that time period..have also had Ss explore origami and duct tape and write the how-to steps #FCSVanguard
Math & Science always make a great marriage. As do Social Studies & ELA. I see lessons on exponent investigation and decimal inquiry for Science & Math. I heard a great idea from a fellow science teacher about Myth Busters--very crosscurricular. #fcsVanguard
A3: just as when introducing any new concept to a class the teacher needs to provide clear expectations. Make sure students understand their creativity is important but be mindful of the supples.
A5 #FCSVanguard
Build something like a simple machine in science to solve a problem in social studies, explain about how you built it for ELA and record calculations for materials used for math?
A3: T’s should set clear expectations , encourage and support discovery, be well stocked , flexible , and allow the S’s plenty of choice and voice when implementing Makerspace. #fcsvanguard
Oh one more thing that teachers need to know: IT DOESNT NEED TO BE A SPACE! Makerspaces are way of thinking too! My classroom has had a couple of storms pass through as a result. But I’m okay with that! 🤣🤣#fcsvanguard
Q5: Math & Science always make a great marriage. As do Social Studies & ELA. I see lessons on exponent investigation and decimal inquiry for Science & Math. I heard a great idea from a fellow science teacher about Myth Busters--cross-curricular. #fcsVanguard
@Ms_Silverboard it's incorporating so many skills and showing purpose as to why you need to know how to explore, research, write, prioritize, etc. #FCSVanguard All skills everyone needs to be able to communicate in one way or another.
A5: After our Creek/Cherokee unit we went to the Makerspace to create artifacts from that time period..have also had Ss explore origami and duct tape and write the how-to steps #FCSVanguard
A6: I feel like a lot of people will list tech tools and gadgets (which are totally acceptable) however I think it’s also important to do basics too— scrap materials, tape, glue, pipe cleaners, etc #FCSVanguard
A5 a lego Wall, which my schoolmates media center has is such a great makerspace for the kids. You could also Create a maker space on a cart and have it be mobile if you don’t have the room in your classroom. #fcsvanguard
A5: Great blog with adorable ideas for creating cross-curricular connections and opportunities for collaboration between ...https://t.co/RJOEtUiQiB#FCSVanguard
A6: we bought laser mazes, cubelets, circuit boards and things like that...I think the most popular item has been the sewing machine! You never know what will hook a kid! #FCSVanguard@EllenReagin
A6: Just about everything - cardboard (flat, thick, this, tubes), pipecleaners, zipties. Ss will find uses for the weirdest things. Go clean out your storage rooms lol #FCSVANGUARD
A5: The key is collaborating with your peers to gain these new ideas- You could really do anything-Math/SS, ELA/Sci, Sci/SS- but some of the coolest ones I've seen are the seemingly "opposite" subjects like art/sci.- #fcsvanguardhttps://t.co/gWXeKwcQ2lhttps://t.co/M1mZ3RRjAp
A4: Incoporating Makerspace makes the students highly engaged and that sparks a deeper interest and appreciation for the skill/concept . Thus increasing their level of understanding. #fcsvanguard
A7: I have learned, the hard way, that coaching is mandatory. A teacher has so much on their plate that planning a quality PBL unit is low on their list. But, it encompasses all facets of great teaching and WILL impact learning! #FCSVanguard
Anything hands-on that kids would enjoy....depends on the grade level as well. There should be a lot of “non-traditional” real world items as well. Those are items students may see at home, but not usually at school. #FCSVANGUARD
A6 We have lots of fun items like boxels, mini robots, lego wall, and more, but it really takes time and dedication for a teacher to get the students past the 1st dimension and get to the collaborate learning level. #fcsvanguard
#fcsvanguard
A6- one time we participated in Destination Imagination club. It was more focused on particular projects but we did activities that involved any material like straw, paper clips, stirrer, rubberband,...it doesn't have to have technology all the time.
A5: Implementing math and social studies would allow students to explore various ideas cross-curricular. Reviewing main theory to support storytelling would be a way to implement literacy. #FCSVanguard
#fcsVanguard A7: Teachers need to be convinced that the idea is not something that is trendy and not long-lasting. It can be done with evidence that it is helping students achievement levels.
#FCSVanguard
A7- share ideas and things that work with our colleagues—provide time for teachers to collaborate and co teach, so that they will feel prepared to try new things.
A7: SHOW them! Teachers are encouraged and more inclined to do when they see it in action or finished products! SUPPORT them! Offer to help them think through, organize and if possible assist. #FCSVanguard
A5: I don't have any specific lessons in mind, but I would think that in makerspaces, like PBL, the cross between disciplines is often naturally occurring. #fcsvanguard
A7 Lead by example, but also don’t push too hard. Makerspaces and PBLs are so unique, as are their end results, so it’s a fine line. Giving a cookie cutter activity isn’t going to make an impact...baby steps! #FCSVanguard
#fcsVanguard A7: Teachers need to be convinced that the idea is not something that is trendy or not a flash in the pan idea that isn't long-lasting. It can be done with evidence that it is helping students achievement levels.
#fcsvanguard
A7: teachers definitely need training, demonstration, and time to learn how to incorporate. Once they feel like they got it...they will automatically integrate this concept into their lessons
A6: Have a large variety! We currently have workbenches, sewing machines, flexible seating, 3D printer, green screen, a closet of misc supply items (paper towel rolls, legos, paint, cardboard, jugs, etc.) goPro, a drone, a HTC vive headset... #fcsvanguard
A6 There is no limit to which items should be in a school makerspace...students need an abundance of items to let their creative juices flow. #FCSVanguard
A7: Allows for those teachers to see it in action- have them observe a teacher who is using it. This is key- it makes the abstract concrete and may help them visualize it's uses in their own class. Be open to questions and provide support and resources. #fcsvanguard
The city of Roswell is turning the old fire station on Holcomb Bridge into a Makerspace called Roswell Fire Lab. They are having a meeting this Saturday at 11 in the Centennial Learning Commons is any one would like to learn more. #FCSVanguard
A5: Cross curricular activities with Makerspace is unlimited . Collaborating with students and colleagues is a great way to maximum the learning experience . #fcsvanguard
A7: Teachers should attend Professional Developments focused on the benifits and the concept. If teachers have a clear understanding they will become more comfortable. #FCSVanguard
