-
Linna Hunt just started the admin program for my credential, teach 5th grade
-
Q1. Do u see possibilities for teacher leadership in your district? If so, what venues are provided for teachers to contribute?
-
A1 Looking for ways to empower teachers to use inquiry and Instructional Rounds to identify and own their learning.
-
We know who you are, Judy!
-
Does that mean you can still compete in the author olympics?
-
Marlena, tech coach from Central CA. Looking forward to our chat tonite!!
-
Glad to have you aboard, Darren!
-
HI It's Ari from the Inland Empire. I'll be jumping in and out of the chat tonight.
-
A1: As a small, indp. charter, we all need to pitch in extra. We all take the lead in some way on something.
-
Still so jelly about your day...but amazingness attracts amazingness, (: glad to see you
-
A1:Yes! PLC lead teams, district committees, leading PD for school/district & attending conferences! https://t.co/L9SqFBnSJE
-
A1 need both formal and informal options for teacher leadership. Both in and out of the classroom
-
-
-
Q1. Do u see possibilities for TL in ur district? If so, what venues r provided for Ts 2 contribute? https://t.co/kC53YQp9zG
-
A1: Teachers have opportunities to serve on committees that help move our district forward.
-
A1: we have TOSAs, site tech people, lots of under the radar leadership opportunities
-
A1: GUSD has a stipend for PLC Leadership Team members at each school. Also Ts deliver PD to Ts in their area of expertise.
-
That is exactly my reaction when I met , poor guy didn't stand a chance
-
What kind of committees?!
-
We’ll let the static pic slide this time, Aron. ;)
-
How do you envision these Instructional Rounds looking like?
-
A1 Wonder what teachers consider authentic leadership...
-
-
-
Couldn’t agree more. Voice and choice are critical.
-
Yes & more are on the way. Each site empowers Ts in dif ways based on content and context expertise. https://t.co/PyEBhxMJ9b
-
-
Q1. Do u see possibilities for teacher leadership in your district? If so, what venues are provided for teachers to contribute?
-
-
-
-
We currently have ELA Adoption committee, math commitees, gradebook task force, etc.
-
TomCovigton we have TOSAs, a of committee and teacher leaders for trainings
-
Thoughts so far? Would love to pick your brain as you tread further down that path.
-
I feel like those are traditional ways to give a voice and we need to do more...
-
-
A1: I think my district is heading in right direction in allowing t's to have input, and hope to see it continue.
-
-
A1 our district has different committees for teachers to be a part of,such as curriculum and technology.
-
A1: We began the year with , a half-day P.D. led by Ts, called "Tech Guides."
Those Ts are leaders at sites.
-
-
-
Also, HS Social studies teacher from SW Mo. here.
-
A1Teachers have an equal seat at the table in developing school and disrtrict strategic plans https://t.co/QvrxO88p0K
-
-
We currently have ELA Adoption committee, math commitees, gradebook task force, etc.
-
We have opportunities to present in areas we've been recognized to excel in https://t.co/MSijX0lR3f
-
-
Q1. Do u see possibilities for teacher leadership in your district? If so, what venues are provided for teachers to contribute?
-
-
That would have been epic. So glad for the selfie, that's awesome. And same goes for you
-
Thanks for the awesome gif. Did he seriously dance like that on the course?
-
Aron's on fire tonight (:
-
A2 PD and learning time out of classrooms has overwhelmed teachers who aren’t used to “learning is the new norm”.
-
GIFs don’t lie, Ari. GIFs don’t lie.
-
A2: Biggest barrier for TL's is providing ways for sharing w/ peers. Also, allowing time to get out is struggle for me.
-
-
-
A2: Biggest constraint is time. We also have changes, learning, new Ts, many other hurdles
-
I’ve seen committees be effective and not. How are yours?
-
-
Yes -- Does everyone struggle with subs? Need to embed learning time weekly in the job.
-
I am not seeing my tweets so maybe I am doing this wrong?
-
Roland, I didn't know you played golf and had such sweet moves
-
A2: Strong Instructional Leaders at all sites are key to breaking down the barriers that may exist at school and districts.
-
Are you following on Twitter or Tweetdeck?
-
-
There’s a lot you don’t know about me, Jeremiah. I’m like an onion, a surprise with each layer.
-
-
A2: Again, as a small charter, not a whole lot of room for growth or movement into leadership roles.
-
A2 teachers having the opportunity to view learning process in other classrooms and learning from each other in "real time"
-
The perception of time There are a lot of demands but imagine what we could do if we shifted priorities https://t.co/CNfx7skT13
-
Here's to hoping each one makes me cry from all the awesomeness
-
-
For sure. I hate being out of my class and don't want admins to think I'd rather not be there either.
-
Subs are a problem. But that is the only contracted time we have right now. Looking to enfold PD into contract. Any ideas?
-
I think its often hard for Ts to get used to the fact that they need to be life long learners
-
-
-
A2: Trust & credibility can be a barrier between Ts if the school/district culture does not support Ts as leaders!
-
A2: voices aren't heard or acknowledged, so makes it hard to want to keep trying
-
Q2 need to give themseleves permission to be learners and for admin to free themselves to learn alongside teachers
-
-
A2 Teachers still feel they have really no power or say in the decisions made.
-
TOSAs aren’t a new concept, but the role is making a HUGE comeback!
-
, so true: need to adopt as a https://t.co/v1QoK23MzD
-
-
A2 PD and learning time out of classrooms has overwhelmed teachers who aren’t used to “learning is the new norm”.
-
-
A2 Not using/understanding formative assessment process or access to real time student progress data can limit innovation.
-
I've toyed w/the idea of a day but teachers only PL for 1/2. The other 1/2 the sub for the other Ts.
-
Great participation in elementary. Many of our teachers are ready to find resources that make their jobs easier.
-
If time is a huge constraint... What things are less impactful that we can eliminate? Not an easy question!
-
A2: Barriers=misunderstanding of roles, wondering of purpose, and lack of vision… Yes, and… what can we do about that?!?!
-
-
-
I want to be able to get out more and be a leader regionally. That's a struggle for me.
-
-
A2: Build the capacity of your teachers and then they can be developed as leaders.
-
-
A2 District offices need to reogainize and retool to support learning and leadership at schools
-
Growth mind set for adults -- overlays the shift in priorities!!
-
This is so real it hurts. https://t.co/R64NwoTwG5
-
-
A2: Barriers=misunderstanding of roles, wondering of purpose, and lack of vision… Yes, and… what can we do about that?!?!
-
Sorry Judy, I may have been prompted, I'll stop the disruptions (:
-
We see you, Linna! Keep ‘em coming. Just be sure to include with each tweet.
-
Let them throw hardballs and miss the plate, but still have a backstop - YOU as TL. https://t.co/EKH9BqltSX
-
-
A2: Build the capacity of your teachers and then they can be developed as leaders.
-
Mark!!! Always great to hear your great thoughts. That is the Q we've been asking all year. No answer yet
-
Some more effective than others. Trying to find blend of PD and voice. T's are eager to see their voice heard.
-
So what should we shift from and shift to?
-
-
-
. love the but had to razz you just the same https://t.co/8AaLG5zvPs
-
-
Sorry Judy, I may have been prompted, I'll stop the disruptions (:
-
-
Was this the result of your name being announced as next speaker
-
Got it! I think my tweets were to long also.
-
-
Your razzing is always welcome
-
For sure... As one who thinks I have valuable experience to share, this is an issue. https://t.co/qRtR09WOQF
-
-
Some more effective than others. Trying to find blend of PD and voice. T's are eager to see their voice heard.
-
A3 Rocklin sites were given strategic planning time and money to identify how they attain District goals.
-
So crucial to have non-evaluative staff to help others.
-
This would counter your amateur status (:
-
-
-
Non-evaluative staff has a much easier time helping Ts with craft.
-
A3 dedicated PLC time weekly, committees, strategic planning, LCAP, TOSAS, teachers leading adult learning informal and formal
-
Oh what! So you're literally tonight (: Now I'm more jelly
-
If we can't find anything...
Maybe the conversation needs to shift to the connections that can be made!
-
Love that you’re persevering!!!!
-
Besides rep on LCAP, we have a few committees that connect, refocus and fine-tune district goals twice yearly
-
I’ve seen this, too. Need to break the idea that Ts are masters of all knowledge.
-
A3) I'm excited to be part of our district tech team which is being re-purposed to be more about site PD
-
While I completely agree, I first read this minus the "f" in shift...completely different context
-
. going 2 depend on content & context, I think. Math needs r diff then ELA. Admin needs to empower voice & choice
-
True. But what about elem age Ts, where they are both ELA and Math?
-
A3: We have the TTLs, TOSAs, and site specific leadership teams, need to connect and empower all
-
A3: Strong Systems Leadership must exist for teachers to be included in data analysis and the attainment of District goals.
-
A3: Site leadership team is a conduit sharing ideas between grade level Ts & P. Committee chairs also provide voice to admin/DO
-
A3 I am part of our PBIS team and Tech team and curriculum committee, these are few that we have
-
A3: Teacher input via curriculum committees & opportunities to lead mini PD sessions provide teachers w/leadership experience.
-
That being said, t's are the one's in classroom w/ exp. Allow us to share methods.
-
-
. Ya know, I'm not sure. I've never taught ELEM. That might b when site or grade level priorities take precedent
-
-
-
A3: a lot relies on dept head to guide dept in attaining goals, unfortunately dept heads don't get much guidance from above
-
Data analysis… District goals… tell me more!!!
-
I can tell you that as soon as I hear somebody hasn't been in classroom, I shut off...
-
Provide methods instead of theory, please.
-
-
Or It’s like we say, don’t teach tech for tech sake, so arm Ts with general skills that can be applied in many ways?
-
Wow… yes! it’s humbling to be a learner. We need to make sure we are empathizing too
-
give Ts room2 experiment, support if they fail, encourage when succeed, yes &, share knoweldge ask ?s
-
That’s reasonable. I do the same.
-
-
And how powerful is it to model that humbleness to Ss?!
-
OH man… sorry for any interruptions, . We love you!!!
-
OH man… sorry for any interruptions, . We love you!!!
-
How powerful for LEADERS to model humbleness to STAFF?!
-
might be 1 way it could work has a great story about this, part of it includes trusting Ts instinct
-
Are the mini PD sessions at the site or district level? https://t.co/oXS3nPfdfV
-
-
A3: Teacher input via curriculum committees & opportunities to lead mini PD sessions provide teachers w/leadership experience.
-
So true we our way to excellence
-
-
-
We’re good… keeping it together. and TY for offering, my guardian angel!!
-
A4 do not crown teacher leaders as "experts" it makes them unapproacable as an adult learner. Theyare facilitaors of learning
-
-
Block your calendar off for targeted classroom time You can't build capacity if you're not connected!
-
Research shows that Ts collaborating with the principal is the best path to improving teaching practices and student learning!
-
-
-
A4 - RUSD has site leadership teams that allow them to have a voice and each site honors teachers at staff meetings.
-
Yes, but teacher leaders must also be proven effective or they will not be respected.
-
A4: We have Ts present, we have several style events where many Ts are starting to be presenters, many opps
-
Providing Ts with a safe environment to take risks is needed!
-
-
This is where I have a hard time. Hard to be ed. leader and stay in classroom...
-
How can one know my struggle if they haven’t filled my shoes?
-
strong coaching model for is key for supporting teachers. Admin as coach not "consultant"
-
-
As a T, how might your "street cred" be more valuable?
-
How does environment look. Even with the best of leaders, scary to take risks.
-
Webuse data at admin meetings, leadership meetings & PLCS
-
In what ways might these two roles look different for you?
-
A4- shout outs!, kudos in newsletter, mentions in district Twitter feed. Good Ts get oppor. 2 train other Ts
-
A4: The PLC framework encourages ALL teachers to be engaged as active leaders in fueling student learning.
-
Want to build a way to support learning and leadership for teachers - not just prospective admin... https://t.co/rOt1vZHJUV
-
-
strong coaching model for is key for supporting teachers. Admin as coach not "consultant"
-
A4 we only invest in admin for leadership coaching need for teachers
-
I want to be able to get out more to share exp's, but hard to balance. Million $ question for me.
-
I gave lesson in 5th grade using a few weeks ago, we learned and grew together
-
-
A4: Honoring T ldrsp by bringing attention 2 their good wk via blogs, tweets,& badges=way worth it. Help them tell their story!
-
I'm looking for advice on this, I guess.
-
you all should come GIF up - Sunday @ 7PST I may or may not be leading (I may)
-
Given constraints of system, how might you find more of that balance?
-
That's very cool. How might that benefit your Ts?
-
Again, that's what I'm asking... Travel/scheduling contraints are tough to manage.
-
Brian, are you wondering how to help Ts and still focus on you Ss, too?
-
Are there ways w.r.t. support or inviting audience into room?
-
Absolutely! Highlight are teacher leaders! https://t.co/wlfgB30qhg
-
-
A4- shout outs!, kudos in newsletter, mentions in district Twitter feed. Good Ts get oppor. 2 train other Ts
-
A4: GUSD developed 4 Ed Tech presenters at our Black Label. 2 are now faculty . Woot!
-
-
-
YES! I want to be able to do both! I love teaching but love leading.
-
PLCs are a great start but how to ensure teachers use this for work that furthers their learning? https://t.co/7SqkGDHZy5
-
-
A4: The PLC framework encourages ALL teachers to be engaged as active leaders in fueling student learning.
-
Start with asking to lead some PD in staff meetings?
-
I believe that, I wonder if Ts hear and see from Ts in trenches if carries more weight than like me blabbing
-
Invite others into your room to demo?
-
How's your admin supporting this desire for you?
-
-
Team up with other Ts to lead 2 classes and 2 Ts at the same time?
-
-
GREAT question, Jeremiah.
-
So what level might make you feel like you're leading barometer is content?
-
Admin are in PLC teams as well, visiting each others' sites, collaborating...modeling from the top.
-
And then give them a badge!!
-
I like that. Have them (maybe in groups) lead small PD at their site.
-
So true! Time to model that admin are learning, too!
-
-
Nice full circle move Cate
-
-
-
-
A5: Give them time, support their needs, give permission/model failing forward, establish growth mindset culture, and trust
-
A5 Empower them to own their learning and build in time each week to do that.
-
A5: Promote and encourage personalized PD! Let Ts follow their passion and be great at what they love.
-
-
A5 place it in the hands of the Ts. Ps and Admin come and go. Ts, and more imps TL stay
-
Started the A network...for Awesomeness
-
A5 give multiple paths in and out of leadership for teachers. Needs to be fluid not fixed paths. Champion and honor their work
-
Growth mindset for adults has to be the new norm.
https://t.co/xyr3pdbHRt
-
-
A5: Give them time, support their needs, give permission/model failing forward, establish growth mindset culture, and trust
-
Teachers seem to respond well to having admin in PD where they see admin as learners too.
-
That's what this group has taught me, credit should go to them, we're
-
My struggle... I love my community/school/peers/classroom... Big decisions to make.
-
Killing it, Jeremiah. Killing it.
-
Interesting, speak more to this point please
-
A5: Schools/districts/Ps need to celebrate & encourage Ts as they take on leadership roles & continue to give Ts time to shine!
-
So how might admin knowing this be able to provide stages to bring this to light for Ts?
-
A5:
Implement: Keep combing the ranks for new lead-seeds.
Sustain: Constantly set big, audacious goals.
-
And you can love them also by coaching/leading them. :)
-
Really think we need to all agree non of us has arrived and learning is the goal, not status quo.
-
-
That's an ObiWon moment there Roland, well done sir
-
What I found is that my community has grown. Helping Ts affects more than my 30 Ss.
-
A5: recognition of what Ts are doing, opportunities for continued or greater leadership
-
-
I know a district that has supported action research as an alternative eval system for teachers. https://t.co/jWMcnpt40e
-
-
So how might admin knowing this be able to provide stages to bring this to light for Ts?
-
Yes! Stay connected! I love to bounce ideas off others & collaborate! It's important!
-
Wave a wand, it's your perfect setup, what's that look like for you?
-
A5 Supers need to ensure Board of Education understand and support teacher leadership. teacher share their work with Board
-
I couldn't agree more! https://t.co/3oE7IdHwko
-
-
Teachers seem to respond well to having admin in PD where they see admin as learners too.
-
*Sounds* like you’re ready for the next level.
-
Even the roughest cactus needs water, light, and a nurturing enviro
-
A5: Relentless pursuit of continuous improvement will cause teacher leaders to rise to the challenge, maintain forward motion.
-
Glad you enjoy my humor, Tracey.
-
So true, you now impact an entire pop of Ss
-
A5 -admin need to get out and recognize the quality work and share out with others! Prin can tweet pics of the great work
-
Yes! Give them opportunities to explore leadership roles!
-
INCLUDING the TLs… someone needs to care for us too!
-
Absolutely! Let Ts follow their passion! https://t.co/YS0lZ73UZG
-
-
A5: Promote and encourage personalized PD! Let Ts follow their passion and be great at what they love.
-
Interesting and in what ways might this translate to supporting and empowering Ts as leaders?
-
Ha, 25 hours a week in classroom, 25 being able to share exp's.
-
Only way I know to get better is together (:
-
-
I agree! When teachers see that their colleague is doing something awesome, they will see each other as leaders.
-
Will highlighting the good Ts improve the "not there yet" Ts?
-
-
And I use the same techniques to teach Ts as Ss (mostly).
-
I think so as well, but so hard to take the risk and balance.
-
-
Same way I run my workshops/presentations.
-
It was an outcome I didn’t see coming as I reluctantly stepped out of classroom.
-
-
-
I couldn't agree more! Ps must be visible! Walk classes daily, provide feedback, highlight awesomeTs! https://t.co/BcVTbe3ItS
-
-
A5 -admin need to get out and recognize the quality work and share out with others! Prin can tweet pics of the great work
-
Like connected your Ed seems to be TL
-
-
A6: ME! I’m on staff for support and training. Also, conferences and certs are paid for if possible. https://t.co/JlBGKTSusq
-
That’s a tough juggle, though.
-
Is the risk worth finding a new balance?
-
Q6. What out-of-the-box opps does ur district provide for teachers 2build their capacity as leaders? https://t.co/C6idCbjHjX
-
And to make tough decisions and sacrifices.
-
-
Literally laughed out loud. Wife just looked at me like…???
-
That's true inside/outside of classroom Ed is a take take take place
-
That's true inside/outside of classroom Ed is a take take take place
-
-
I want to give them all of this! But what will they do in return? What do we do for students in the end?
-
A6: Many, many conference opportunities and starting to host events like edtech123.
-
A6 Need to ask teachers to help us solve this to push beyond the traditional fixed roles of teacher leadership
-
A6: Summer style institute is a big one. PD led by Ts on site and in district
-
Do you need a “this for that?” Just providing the opportunity to grow helps Ss.
-
-
-
We have innovators, that sign up with TOSAs to get added plnng, training and help. Or innovator program has 25% T part/yr.
-
-
A7: What might it look like if we simplified/harmonized our goals to do a few things well? How might this work be supported?
-
https://t.co/yMiGNGKwHK
-
-
A7: What might it look like if we simplified/harmonized our goals to do a few things well? How might this work be supported?
-
Yes!! That was the game changer for me!
-
I'd ask ts who wanted to do some work to give me an inquiry question and a Theory of action and I'd support it
-
Speak more to this, what lead you there? How might it change for you?
-
Me too! It wasn't in my plan, but I loved being a coach & currently love being an Admin!
-
very powerful and empowering PD for Ts training their own colleagues. Builds capacity real fast!
