Welcome to #NVedchat! We will be discussing “Educating in the Digital Era” 💻
  • NevadaEdChat - Moderator Feb 4 @ 10:01 PM EST
For tonight’s chat, we will be using the Q1: A1: format for questions and responses. Please include #NVedchat at the end. Let's get started!
  • NevadaEdChat - Moderator Feb 4 @ 10:02 PM EST
Let’s start by telling everyone who you are, where you are from, and the first computer you used in school. #NVedchat
  • Snehalstocks - Moderator Feb 4 @ 10:04 PM EST
Snehal from NV and the first computer I used was a "beast" and looked something like this... #NVedchat
  • xAndyJorgensen Feb 4 @ 10:05 PM EST
Andy in Reno. When I was in 5th grade, I pulled my TI-994a to school in my little red wagon to show the class. I was already on the legendary Apple IIe at school tho #nvedchat
  • ColinESeale Feb 4 @ 10:05 PM EST
Hey #NVedchat! Colin, Founder of @thinkLawUS chiming in from Phoenix. Back in Brooklyn, NY, 1990, it was all about the Apple IIE! #LovedMyLogoTurtle #MissMyLargeFloppyDisks
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 4 @ 10:05 PM EST
Hi there. Kevin from Indianapolis. The first computer I used in school was a TRS-80. Gotta love the old Radio Shack Trash-80. #NVedchat
  • NevadaEdChat - Moderator Feb 4 @ 10:06 PM EST
It’s time to begin the Q & A live chat on #NVedchat! Let’s collaborate! Reminder: Don’t forget to include #NVedchat in your responses!
  • NevadaEdChat - Moderator Feb 4 @ 10:06 PM EST
Q1: How have you become a more effective, efficient, or engaging educator by using technology? 💻 #NVedchat
  • joellemassari Feb 4 @ 10:06 PM EST
    #NVedchat
    • joellemassari Feb 4 @ 10:06 PM EST
A1: I am Joelle from Las Vegas, although originally from New Jersey. This question made me laugh because it will show my age -- my first computer I used in school was an Apple IIe. Oregon Trail was the greatest part of my fourth grade year.
  • Snehalstocks - Moderator Feb 4 @ 10:08 PM EST
A1-Students live in a digital age so as an educator, if you make an attempt to use tech to connect with all students, then you are at least trying to be more effective. Love also giving them streaming control when they do presentations. #NVedchat
  • KierstenBasch Feb 4 @ 10:08 PM EST
A1: I think that my enthusiasm for sharing technology with others it shines through and makes my classes more engaging than before. #nvedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 4 @ 10:09 PM EST
R1: curating by creating a product that can be shared with stakeholders anywhere. Using @wevideo for PSAs, or sharing ideas with @flipgrid. Using online collaboration through @CanvasLMS or @GoogleForEdu. VR/AR with #GoogleExpeditions. Coding with @arduino. #NVedchat
  • Snehalstocks - Moderator Feb 4 @ 10:09 PM EST
Love it! Agreed! Energy is key to anything new...especially tech related. #NVedchat
    In reply to @KierstenBasch
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 4 @ 10:10 PM EST
R1: we should remember that using tech shouldn’t be about the tool, but the process. #NVedchat
  • joellemassari Feb 4 @ 10:10 PM EST
A1: I have become a more engaging educator by providing students opportunities to redefine their learning -- to participate in ways that would be previously inconceivable #NVEdchat
  • Snehalstocks - Moderator Feb 4 @ 10:11 PM EST
Very true. Even "old school" processes are good and throw in some tech to better reach and engage students. #NVedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio
  • davydgrey Feb 4 @ 10:11 PM EST
#nvedchat a1 I teach tech so I am always using new gizmos.
    In reply to @NevadaEdChat
  • NevadaEdChat - Moderator Feb 4 @ 10:12 PM EST
Q2 How have you used technology to address the variety of needs of diverse families & students? #NVedchat
  • joellemassari Feb 4 @ 10:12 PM EST
I love this. Remember teaching without @Flipgrid? It is such a staple now. #NVedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio, @NevadaEdChat, @WeVideo, @Flipgrid, @CanvasLMS, @GoogleForEdu, @arduino, @Flipgrid
  • ColinESeale Feb 4 @ 10:13 PM EST
A1: In 04-Can't teach the quadratic formula? I could turn to my textbook or ask a peer. I could now skip teaching it altogether because of @khanacademy and #FlippedClassrooms and ask millions for tips in my Twitter #pln #NVedchat
  • xAndyJorgensen Feb 4 @ 10:14 PM EST
A1: AP Computer Science is coding, which is inherently creative despite the best efforts of the textbook. The best part of the class is the final project designed by each student for themselves. #nvedchat
  • KierstenBasch Feb 4 @ 10:14 PM EST
A2: Technology has allowed me to be accessible during more than just the school day. I notice my students turning work in all the time because we use Google classroom. Even on the weekends. That always makes me smile. #nvedchat
  • Snehalstocks - Moderator Feb 4 @ 10:14 PM EST
A2-Allowed me to provide multiple ways to communicate with any student or family. Some via email, others, via @remind(text message), or even using the phone. Each student and family is different. We need to use all types of tech to better reach them. #NVedchat
  • ColinESeale Feb 4 @ 10:15 PM EST
Ha! Does the textbook stink? I'm a comp sci grad and I never knew comp sci textbooks were allowed to not stink! #nvedchat
    In reply to @xAndyJorgensen
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 4 @ 10:16 PM EST
I think we forget how rapidly technology is evolving. It hasn’t been that long ago that I was talking with my principal about creating a wireless school setting. It was very “futuristic”. With that said, I think this is where processes really are important. #NVedchat
    In reply to @ColinESeale, @khanacademy
  • Snehalstocks - Moderator Feb 4 @ 10:16 PM EST
So true. "tech" has given students the ability to access info faster than in my day and in some cases more efficiently... from the palm of their hand. #NVedchat
    In reply to @ColinESeale, @khanacademy
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 4 @ 10:17 PM EST
R2: tech allows for connection at any time, anywhere. My parents and students know I will pretty much respond to questions from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm. 7 days a week. It makes accessibility easy for them, difficult for me to disconnect from school. #NVedchat
  • xAndyJorgensen Feb 4 @ 10:17 PM EST
There must be a rule somewhere! Seriously tho, it’s the same problem most textbooks have. They lay out a path for the class to walk down at the same time. #nvedchat
    In reply to @ColinESeale
  • davydgrey Feb 4 @ 10:18 PM EST
#nvedchat a2 When it comes to education computers are a great equalizer.
    In reply to @NevadaEdChat
  • joellemassari Feb 4 @ 10:18 PM EST
A2: Tech can really level a playing ground & provide stus w/experiences they wouldn't have access to. Buckling our virtual seatbelts & taking off half way around the world to visit a museum or stand at base of Mayan ruins has given my stus the chance see the world. #NVEdchat
  • ColinESeale Feb 4 @ 10:18 PM EST
I had to work in high school and save up for weeks to get aTI-82 for calculus. @Desmos is really changing the game in making such powerful, visual teaching tools totally accessible! #NVedchat
  • NevadaEdChat - Moderator Feb 4 @ 10:18 PM EST
Q3: What are some of your favorite digital strategies, tech tools, or resources you use in education or the real world? 📱 #NVedchat
  • KierstenBasch Feb 4 @ 10:20 PM EST
A3: I love to @Smore and @Flipgrid with my students. It really helps me let them make their own choices on how to share their understanding of things with me. #nvedchat
  • xAndyJorgensen Feb 4 @ 10:20 PM EST
Absolutely. The question is, what are the learners doing? Creating, communicating, exploring, etc. #nvedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio
  • joellemassari Feb 4 @ 10:21 PM EST
A3: Digital strategies would be incorporating the M and R levels of #samr. My go to tools are @gsuite @AdobeSpark @Flipgrid @anchor. I also love @SmorePages and @canva for communicating with families. #NVedchat
  • Snehalstocks - Moderator Feb 4 @ 10:22 PM EST
A3-Personally, I love using the voice translation in Google for taking notes, etc...when you don't have pen and paper. Then, I send it over to a doc. Writing papers without even touching a keyboard. Where was this for my masters degree??? #NVedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 4 @ 10:23 PM EST
R3: 4Cs are skills that the digital world has allowed us to increase and diversity. We can collaborate with anyone, anywhere. We can be ultra creative in a multitude of ways. Communication can take place at school and outside. #NVedchat
  • Snehalstocks - Moderator Feb 4 @ 10:25 PM EST
Thankfully, my daughter has not used it yet in middle school. Though, she know that she can, but has chosen to go "old school" for now....she just loves writing! #NVedchat
    In reply to @joellemassari, @NevadaEdChat

Final Fun Bonus Question! BQ: What is the strangest 'tech' excuse you have gotten from a student, fellow educator, or anyone? #NVedchat
  • joellemassari Feb 4 @ 10:27 PM EST
I feel the same way. I start to give them a hard time as if, "Hey, you need to labor over this like the rest of us did for decades." Then I stop myself & realize, why not use the tools you have? Alice Keeler says teach knowing you can just Google it. Dive deeper #NVedchat
    In reply to @Snehalstocks, @NevadaEdChat
  • xAndyJorgensen Feb 4 @ 10:28 PM EST
A3: There are so many.. I love watching kids work together to produce a podcast or video on a subject they find interesting. Magic. #nvedchat
  • Snehalstocks - Moderator Feb 4 @ 10:29 PM EST
BQ - I had someone say that they couldn't access their email on their phone because Starbucks didn't have WiFi. What about your data plan? #NVedchat
  • KierstenBasch Feb 4 @ 10:29 PM EST
Bonus: not an excuse but a question. I was asked by a teacher why she couldn’t type on the keyboard and why it was making all the beeping noises. The person had a binder sitting on the spacebar . #nvedchat
  • OtusK12 Feb 4 @ 10:30 PM EST

  • LCHS_Bio Feb 4 @ 10:32 PM EST
BQ: Why doesn’t the computer turn on when I touch the screen? Our Ss have not used PCs much, if ever. #NVedchat
  • xAndyJorgensen Feb 4 @ 10:32 PM EST
BQ - I had a 6th grade parent blame our Exchange server for losing his daughter’s email message to her teacher. He demanded that it was broken. Sending the email was the whole assignment. #nvedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 4 @ 10:32 PM EST
Great questions tonight. Have a great week everyone! #NVedchat
  • LCHS_Bio Feb 4 @ 10:33 PM EST

  • xAndyJorgensen Feb 4 @ 10:35 PM EST
