#NVedchat is dedicated to increasing communication and collaboration of education related topics in the State of Nevada. Originally, created by Mr. Snehal Bhakta.
Andy in Reno. When I was in 5th grade, I pulled my TI-994a to school in my little red wagon to show the class. I was already on the legendary Apple IIe at school tho #nvedchat
A1: I am Joelle from Las Vegas, although originally from New Jersey. This question made me laugh because it will show my age -- my first computer I used in school was an Apple IIe. Oregon Trail was the greatest part of my fourth grade year.
A1-Students live in a digital age so as an educator, if you make an attempt to use tech to connect with all students, then you are at least trying to be more effective.
Love also giving them streaming control when they do presentations. #NVedchat
A1: I have become a more engaging educator by providing students opportunities to redefine their learning -- to participate in ways that would be previously inconceivable #NVEdchat
A1: In 04-Can't teach the quadratic formula? I could turn to my textbook or ask a peer. I could now skip teaching it altogether because of @khanacademy and #FlippedClassrooms and ask millions for tips in my Twitter #pln#NVedchat
A1: AP Computer Science is coding, which is inherently creative despite the best efforts of the textbook. The best part of the class is the final project designed by each student for themselves. #nvedchat
A2: Technology has allowed me to be accessible during more than just the school day. I notice my students turning work in all the time because we use Google classroom. Even on the weekends. That always makes me smile. #nvedchat
A2-Allowed me to provide multiple ways to communicate with any student or family. Some via email, others, via @remind(text message), or even using the phone.
Each student and family is different. We need to use all types of tech to better reach them. #NVedchat
I think we forget how rapidly technology is evolving. It hasn’t been that long ago that I was talking with my principal about creating a wireless school setting. It was very “futuristic”. With that said, I think this is where processes really are important. #NVedchat
So true. "tech" has given students the ability to access info faster than in my day and in some cases more efficiently... from the palm of their hand. #NVedchat
R2: tech allows for connection at any time, anywhere. My parents and students know I will pretty much respond to questions from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm. 7 days a week. It makes accessibility easy for them, difficult for me to disconnect from school. #NVedchat
There must be a rule somewhere! Seriously tho, it’s the same problem most textbooks have. They lay out a path for the class to walk down at the same time. #nvedchat
A2: Tech can really level a playing ground & provide stus w/experiences they wouldn't have access to. Buckling our virtual seatbelts & taking off half way around the world to visit a museum or stand at base of Mayan ruins has given my stus the chance see the world. #NVEdchat
I had to work in high school and save up for weeks to get aTI-82 for calculus. @Desmos is really changing the game in making such powerful, visual teaching tools totally accessible! #NVedchat
A3: I love to @Smore and @Flipgrid with my students. It really helps me let them make their own choices on how to share their understanding of things with me. #nvedchat
A3-Personally, I love using the voice translation in Google for taking notes, etc...when you don't have pen and paper. Then, I send it over to a doc. Writing papers without even touching a keyboard.
Where was this for my masters degree???
#NVedchat
R3: 4Cs are skills that the digital world has allowed us to increase and diversity. We can collaborate with anyone, anywhere. We can be ultra creative in a multitude of ways. Communication can take place at school and outside. #NVedchat
Thankfully, my daughter has not used it yet in middle school. Though, she know that she can, but has chosen to go "old school" for now....she just loves writing! #NVedchat
I feel the same way. I start to give them a hard time as if, "Hey, you need to labor over this like the rest of us did for decades." Then I stop myself & realize, why not use the tools you have? Alice Keeler says teach knowing you can just Google it. Dive deeper #NVedchat
Bonus: not an excuse but a question. I was asked by a teacher why she couldn’t type on the keyboard and why it was making all the beeping noises. The person had a binder sitting on the spacebar . #nvedchat
New! Access to an all-new Rubric Bank: Create rubric assessments faster than ever before! When building a rubric, you can now search for & add previously built rubric descriptors. https://t.co/9R3OvLCHW1#NVedchat#nced#oklaed
Thank you for joining tonight’s #NVedchat on Educating in the Digital Era!
Don’t forget to follow us and all the tweeters that joined #NVedchat tonight and feel free to continue the conversation all week long!
BQ - I had a 6th grade parent blame our Exchange server for losing his daughter’s email message to her teacher. He demanded that it was broken. Sending the email was the whole assignment. #nvedchat
oooooo.....this brings back memories.
My first computer was an Apple IIgs with 2 5 1/2" floppy drives.
and I used to it play "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" 🤣
