Thanks for joining in with the chat
thanks for taking the time to join in with the chat tonight
just come out of class in September, however I 💗 & early
thanks for joining in with the chat this evening
A1 Hi, Joe from Kent, teach in a special school for ASD and communication. Rely on a number of research based approaches.
thanks Alice - great that you could join us. Welcome!
Thanks Joe and welcome - first bonus points go to you for using the A1 convention :)
Hi Clare - welcome. Don't forget to use the hashtag :)
Welcome Laura - hope you enjoy it!
oops - a little new to this. Thanks for reminder
Thanks, I was paying attention for a change.
love Project Based Learning and have been reading some interesting papers on Flipped Learning
A2 good article about DNA in last week's . Nice addition to debates about genetic/knowledge vs mindset/attitude.
can you tell us more Stuart?
Considering or scheme at your school?Get a free consultation on how we can implement your vision
Hi, new to this one but sounded interesting so... hope it's ok to 'eavesdrop'!
hellooooo Claire AHT English 😊
. been looking lots at , formative assessment & dispelling digital natives!
join in on the hashtag Dan
A2 Project based learning seems very suitable for some of our Ss. It's structuring this for students who need high support levels
that's the second tweet in the chat and we're only 10 minutes in. Are you joining us?
I am really liking Spaced Revision and developing flipped learning.
hi, I'm Gemma and I currently teach Art and Design in FE
A2 been looking into flipped learning and pre learning with my class. Think there is great scope for
Blended learning. Using things like video tutorials helps to facilitate learning not try and lead it.
A2: handing the curriculum over to students, moonshots in education, encouraging soft-skills.
I've also found spaced repetition & low stakes testing interesting because they could be easy tweaks to support progress
I hadn't come across pre-learning. Can you expand a little?
currently loving using Ict to enhance the learning in the classroom
can you tell us more Jen?
I'm looking forward to this. Too often it becomes 'just try your best&you can do anything'. Vpatronising https://t.co/1Nkm5yhss7
Special article from Dweck in tomorrow's on that very topic
Q3. What action research techniques have you used in your classroom and what were the results? https://t.co/kpzaVnICrH
hugely interested in immersive learning too- enjoying watching and learning it develop as a concept
. my students (SEN) love deciding the topic/direction of the lesson
I want to be an astronaut, therefore I can.....
I am trying to develop it in A Level sociology and Psychology
Really interested in the Flipped learning approach, where can I find out more?
thanks for taking the time to join us and tweet on - tonight we're looking at research
explains clearly how DNA affects learning but environment still essential factor. Clever kids should be all rounders
The two ideas together suggest that regular spaced testing of material increases retention. Great for linear exams.
Hello from across the pond. Gregg McGough, ELA teacher at the high school level. Deeply inspired by
what things are you trying?
thanks Claire - can you tell us more about this?
use of resource stations in classrooms to develop choice and independence. Integrated with flipped learning.
Learners who can manage their learning environment are most able learners.
maybe a tad vintage now but still love Wiliam's AFL stuff and the feedback cycle. Can be applied to so many areas
from me, or I can recommend actual good stuff?
A3: I have implement an Action Research project that allows my Ss 2 game their learning using Plague, Inc.
A3 Liaised with local university to use PECS (picture exchange communication) to reduce transition anxieties in new student
. narrative research led by children is *gold dust* they tell you how it is!
Considering or scheme at your school?Receive a free consultation on how we can implement your vision
love the concept of the kids being surrounded by real things to aid their learning-the engagement to learn is fab!
exactly. Or I want to be a singer... But I can't read music. Usually promoted under 'raising self esteem'
based around the forgetting curve?
have worked on improving more student friendly assessment criteria - fab outcomes & progress afterwards too
Yes. The most recent shareable thing I've seen on Twitter is a booklet by
Thanks, I have started doing this with both classes I teach, sometimes they ask to repeat one from previous lesson
so, essentially sharing images of new environment to facilitate familiarity?
A3 AR into using blogging to give class an audience for writing. Genuine purpose had big impact, blogging not necessary though
Using simple Positive Psychology Interventions as starters - like 3 Good Things
think we're on the same page Jen
Padlet for me so far but now about to use Doink 😊😋
does that requires pupils to have devices? ?
observation...semi structured interview results = deeper understanding of practice in ind classes
we do do that as well but this instance was encouraging requesting familiar object to reduce homesickness.
Reduction and removal of writing frames = best decision for promoting independent writing.
I saw Jo talking at 's school on Monday. Not seen the booklet though.
A3. Action research in ed tech tools: what works, what doesn't, and how they impact learning.
Looks like is tech based this evening?
now evaluating impact of parent marking via Google Docs. Anecdotal engagement increased. Testing with control soon
Hi, I teach pre-school/kindergarten and I tutor mainly English & reading skills.
It sounds it. You might be interested in Kathryn Ecclestone 'The Dangerous Rise of Therapeutic Education'
yes my kids have the use of iPads- digital working walls - loved them! as do the kids...
Really awesome to see you integrating spacing and testing !
I might have got the wrong person: let me check my Twitter favourites. It was great
Q4. What research tools have you used in the classroom that have enabled you to gather effective data? https://t.co/m3aLqpsV3l
I can't wait to have a go with it- the kids are so exited at the challenge
I love it. Key for core knowledge in English too. Reinforces that English is also about facts!
research is a culture at our school see last year's closing the gap findings https://t.co/E1YWzMuPgD this year attendance
with a dose of platitudes for pudding
What is "effective data" ?
https://t.co/0mP4lgITA3 give it a go- endless possibilities in learning given the engagement of the kids!
Love Padlet - not come across Doink...
Kahoot.it has been helpful for fun, quick assessments, but I'm still looking for personalized results and remedies.
ah will do thank you! It interests me how putting the pedagogy first has made a diff
Meet English teacher who loves to use spacing & frequent low-stakes testing - fantastic! https://t.co/2gvnrstGPd
I love it. Key for core knowledge in English too. Reinforces that English is also about facts!
feel action research most fruitful with sch-uni/practitioner-lecturer partnerships.Buddy/mentor system
that's not my experience - more and more so
how to use ict to get the max out of the learning time is key for me -
A4 Has anyone used videoing lessons to reflect on/improve teaching? Does it work?
don't forget the hashtag :)
have amazing examples of this! https://t.co/bm5SUIrEry
love the concept of the kids being surrounded by real things to aid their learning-the engagement to learn is fab!
Has anyone mentioned students as researchers yet?
Still think Socrative is great to collect data to show learning. Powerful AfL tool
Finding coach or mentor essential for deeper understanding.
As with anything, it's about purpose and impact. I like low stakes testing to consolidate knowledge https://t.co/fBAhVFQZlB
That's so great to hear. We were under the impression that teachers weren't inclined towards "more tests".
yep- love them! Simply brilliant to learn from
. we're doing bits of this but & are rock stars of reflective practice!
do you think its worthwhile?
Try "Mindful teaching" when it comes to assessing learner understanding. (Research = Ellen Langer) https://t.co/GJhqSOw3jM
absolutely-my own little research I guess this year as I'm lucky to have the tech!
Yes, very powerful but needs good levels of trust to get going
A4:Plickers and Kahoot tools are the most effective ones
studied Maria Montessori's ideas - idea of child-centred approach to learning.
Some in UK too. But we need to shift towards all schools using research driven pedagogy (in my opinion) https://t.co/OE3pu8KQaT
It may be different in UK vs US. Lots of anti-testing rhetoric in US. Great to see teachers embracing science
you might be interested in Joe
will check it out thanks.
I love this at possibilities galore!
Could not agree more - obviously, that's our mission! - and really excited to hear this opinion voiced by teachers
do you share or just for self reflection?
. consultation on proposal to 90% of students to take GCSES in subjects ends at 5pm tomorrow
I think we 'assume' everyone has kit & are doing what we do but they don't...😔
I would like to give this a go!
. Who shared a booklet earlier this week about spaced repetition? I can't remember and wanted to share it on
Q6. Do you have any research you’ve published that you'd like to share that others would find interesting? https://t.co/FI8mKJxRy0
Q5. What authors, books, speakers or others have influenced you in your classroom practice? https://t.co/7g1K3P6TZp
Used in previous school. Self reflection first, then with coach and only shared wider if happy to do so
yep. I never have before- hugely lucky! Opportunities everywhere to learn
. would be great to set up a small research group perhaps?
Apologies Q5 / Q6 came out at same time
Testing is bad if there's no point. And we have to be aware that teacher marking is not without bias 1/2
Do you have ? They've been my little project & are like gold dust!
would love to hear your thoughts on how to get teachers, parents, kids to buy in to freq quizzing
Does your school go get go-getters or tell go-getters to get going?
I know where mine stands.
What action research techniques have you used in your classroom and what were the results?
we used and its very good. Not isolated in support to 'measure' improvements though
A2. I'm huge fan of flipped/blended learning approach. Particularly useful when you only have 50min lesson per week
ditching positive praise completely. Never acknowledge effort in feedback is proving really effective
currently loving There is another way but also there's one I keep going back to..
2/2 So low stakes, closed question quizzes removes some of those issues. It's purposeful, helps recall & less biased.
I've gone more qualitative: reflective journals, mini focus groups with big mind maps etc. A lot more student voice
awesome! The power of strikes again!
think 's done something similar? I'd say yes tho not tried -seeing self enhances understanding
yes please, we'd love to see it!
..obviously triangulated with actual outcomes, grade and performance data
Don't forget to add A1, A5 etc next to your responses to link to questions
Prove it works. Low stakes terminology quizzes at A level contributed to 80% A/B in my area!
used the harnesses, was great fun/very useful
I have 23 now from years 2 - 6, they run clubs every lunch & are FAB! So many opportunities if you have that passion
New classes in January. Some students gone up 2-4 grades because their core knowledge is better.
perhaps could support it across your different schools?
Data to back up the causal link b/ween quizzes & final grades? (we believe you! this is for others)
I know that's anecdotal for a research chat but students (& parents) buy in once they see results.
would be amazing! 😊 another research project!
first and foremost and then his recommendation to read Ron
would be a great project with real impact.
It was the main change in teaching methods and results got better the more it was embedded.
I LOVE talking about them so please do! Working with 15 schools in our LEA shortly to set them up...
Very good point. Rigorous research and parent/student buy-in should not be equated. Food for though
. lots... but just *gets it* A5
well ive got some reading to do now! thanks
10mins at the start of every lesson at y12/13 we did recall quizzes with super-quizzes each half term
someone told me yesterday they'd avoided GAFE on the advice of their Y8 son as only good for collaboration
I agree. A great leveller, too. Quiet ones get a voice.
agreed!! great personal development with an impact on learning
agreed!! great personal development with an impact on learning
Distilled research shows teachers need to meet learners needs to promote engagement. Ideas from ace-d https://t.co/mooOiB7dv1
If parents & students see the link for themselves, they embrace the method. Also, quizzes are fun!
It's based in my action research so it's just very context specific.I wouldn'tlike to make big claims
This is interesting. I use it to help make posters, but students don't seem to get into it
But some people are. I've seen some papers out there looking at assessment and quantifying it.
that's because you're the real deal, John!
Also contextualises learning!
Whatever a teacher does they must promote teacher/learner relationship & discuss responsibilities. https://t.co/2YUo4Cb05e
A6 Not my research but reflected on how I use research in class - It was more often that I thought. https://t.co/kAHjeexllH
A6 Not my research but reflected on how I use research in class - It was more often that I thought. https://t.co/dZAMv1Lsvi
For most teachers, it's about having simple strategies informed by research - easily applicable
be delighted to! facilitates connections across teachers & schools
I hate listening to myself, hope the Ss don't! Im always filming Ss for evidence. should let them have a turn!
a7: setting up writing online moderation for schools-not sure if that counts as research but it'll go live shortly
A6: I took part in Harvard research into SMS messages and parental engagement and how impacts on results. Huge gains in learning
Def agree there! As anoter post said, let them be researchers trying apps etc...
Most important theories for me relate to reflective practice, and reflecting strategically. Always using range of models
A7 We use elements of the TEACCH structure throughout the school, all adapted to the individuals.
No time now, but looks like an invaluable this evening linked to research and education.
Q5. John Hattie, Guy Claxton, Shirley Clarke... oh and Mark Anderson - he writes some good stuff! 😬
Practice-based enquiry is research
. If you had to make a totally blind guess, what % of teachers currently buy in to freq quizzing?
Definitely . He doesn't know it but he opened the digital door to me!
I agree. I really love everything about reflecting and it's weird, but great.
Alan Turing, they love the lesson starter I do ;)
Well has spawned a new hashtag -
A7: tried and tested- get Ss to turn work to music. If it worked for Shakespeare to get actors to learn lines it'll work for them
and research in the classroom, have proven to be very popular amongst our community of teachers.
I think issue is conception and definition of research. I teach on Master's course for teachers and the benefits of research 1/2
2/2 within own classroom are tremendous. But often we have wrong ideas abt what makes research.
Smartphone app reveals secret life of WW2 spies.SOE is hidden part of history. Tech binging it to life https://t.co/IQhYKNjcOK
Depends on subject I'd say. I don't think it's used as much in English.
A5 seeing what and have done with blogs really inspired me.
A7. Using rewards eg badges & stickers with tools such as . Also some gamification with etc.
Q8. What barriers or problems have you encountered in embedding research informed practice? https://t.co/lVIux1BfQp
A7: actioning the outcomes form student voice via focus groups and targeted questioning on specific topics
I agree with your choice.
. A8 *new* can sometimes be frightening, even if the research says it works... more risks need to be taken!
Ours have one it has a feed on their blog too
There are so many in the UK that have the gang those through TMBETT
a5 For me it is about being eclectic and getting the best bits out of all of them
A8 When implementing researched informed practice need to understand how to apply properly. Lack of Training can be barrier
A8: time to devote to it is a barrier and time to reflect essential
Very important! Doing something with the results!
as with many things in education
I hate listening to myself too but watching yourself is real eye opener. I never realised how walking I do around room 😉
All the Carol Dweck stuff around growth mindset for me.
time and support from SMT. Too many stuck in their ways
I get inspired everyday on Twitter, this morning it was a display by
A8: time is biggest barrier. New ideas need time and that is scarce in schools
Not a barrier as such but I think all trainees should be equipped to make research-informed decisions https://t.co/J4XQyNhQik
Q8. What barriers or problems have you encountered in embedding research informed practice? https://t.co/lVIux1BfQp
A8 Lack of understanding of methodology is huge barrier. Misconceptions about research another one.
They love it! Every year group & SLT have a Twitter feed too If you're enthused so are children
Absolutely. Pupil voice is key.
A8 I think practice-based enquiry needs to be trained and taught and learnt to be most effective.
Yes, surprised & happy an English teacher brought up spacing/testing. Where did you learn about it?
oh is so agree with that! Just need to be sure about the work you do and how it benefits YOUR S's
did you know the pictures are linked to videos of kids explaining the terms using
very true Colin, try baby steps!!! ;)
Interesting. But doesn't have to be like that. Research can come out of what you do anyway...
Sometimes it's as simple as resources. If something breaks or isn't there, people give up quickly.
Interesting! I struggle because students don't have twitter accounts!
A8: Biggest issue is creating time to fully embed research and exploratory practice
I see this with technology lots
The playing of board games, card games & puzzles for an hour a week can have a huge impact.
https://t.co/h5F6aqBOHh
I'm a research student at Durham Uni and intervention leader. I like following research on assessment
It is a shared one across each year group. They tweet authors, app makers, schools etc
My way in originally was through reading some of 's work during my training year.
PREP! KS2 Maths Organiser Kids can choose topic, see questions+hit YouTube button if stuck for video https://t.co/7KcWYZss1C
I know this was half-joking, but it's true about discrediting, but that is lack of understanding
not been observed myself, but been involved in it and it had amazing results just with tiny tweaks!
One of the most frustrating parts of my role as Computing Lead. I enthuse staff then tech fails and it's all lost
is nearly over for another week - in these last 5 minutes is there anything else you'd like to add? https://t.co/5YkGFDmCkH
Yes, I agree. Time is always of a premium, especially with constant changes to the curriculum. https://t.co/zdkPuXBmiP
A8: time is biggest barrier. New ideas need time and that is scarce in schools
Barrier: If dominant/accepted whole school 'ways' are significantly behind research evidence
in regards to SLT accounts, in my experience the best CPD happens for me
Why do you think that? Practice-based enquiries come out of the things we do every day and reflection is part of that
Yes of course, even that takes time to embed whole school though. Sustainable change needs to be planned carefully
We did, was extremely useful! Embarassing at first! Have you used lesson study?
change management is a difficult thing to get right
I video myself and watch back.
agree in theory, but couple that with all the other elements that are thrust upon us and it becomes quite a challenge
I then use reflective models to gauge what happened.
loving the connections and opps that have come from the chat- we grow from research and sharing thank you 😊
Totally agree. I'd love to have research groups in each school as part of opt-in CPD https://t.co/8AJ76JOIYM
A8: Biggest issue is creating time to fully embed research and exploratory practice
Twitter CPD is far greater than that you would have on your stereotypical 'CPD Course'
Also forgot to mention which shaped my E + M teaching with carefully thought out resources https://t.co/71FijrsVdz
Q5. What authors, books, speakers or others have influenced you in your classroom practice? https://t.co/7g1K3P6TZp
I can see that. But often I get that ppl do too big things, changes n interventions can be small
I've said many times that Twitter offers the best free CPD, where you can sit in PJs with a 🍷
yes, curriculum changes often dictate pace of life in school. Means discussion is about content rather than pedagogy
Agree to extent. Trick is to keep the intervention and research manageable and look at small changes
completely agree. If it's worked in my classroom, who is some1 behind a computer screen to discredit it?
We're having an inset on it
