Q1 coming up in 1 minute…
Hey Michael! Great to have you with us!
Pam from Summerville, SC. I'm an Instructional Technology Specialist
great to have you here Taylor
Dave, San Dimas High School 9-12 Math
Q1: What is your current device of choice in education? Why?
so glad to have you join us
Bourne what is up? We need to chat about edcampmaker
Thanks for joining us Bob!
Q1: What does your school/district typically do for in-service and start of year training
Dan, business teacher from St. Louis.
fear to have you with us!
A1. Two screens = increased accomplishments.
I love the use of Chromebooks. We use Google Apps for everything and everything saves automatically. Fifth grade must!
Our focus should be on showing students how to use any tech device properly and safely for educational purposes.
A1: We use Windows based laptops and I love it. You can do anything you want to with them.
A1: We mainly use iPads, but would love to explore Chromebooks!
A1: me=iPhone and laptop. As=chromebooks and desktops
love it! Why? (Assuming this is an answer to Q1?)
A1. Relationship building
go to Buena Vista for an Irish coffee for me
Welcome everyone and glad to have you with us
2 screens for all of your students???
...perhaps I've been away from too long...are there two Q1s circulating?
A1: Because my school district just became a Google School, so chromebooks.
Jenna, Ed Tech masters student at GWU and Coordinator of Community Ed, San Antonio TX
A1: iPads, cuz I use them everyday.
paper protoyping pushes performance and saves time. Widely available tech open to those with any skill level
A1: I just got a Lenovo yoga as a new teacher device to mobilize teaching.
A1 my surface RT is the device of choice
Other A1: My district does not do any tech training to begin the year.
Awesome Christopher! Many schools are going this route it seems. https://t.co/uDHMAcc7fR
A1: We use Windows based laptops and I love it. You can do anything you want to with them.
Sorry about the double Q1 - there was a data entry error in my file. Grabbed the wrong date! all fixed now!
A1: Chromebooks are my favorite because cost, better writing experience. Especially love & auto backup to cloud
A1 Any device that supports quality instruction, student learning, creativity and collaboration. We use ThinkPads
A1: Macbook Pro/Air. I want Ss to type which is why I prefer over tablet, and I prefer Mac OS, software, & storage (over c-book)
Chromebooks for gen in-class use due to ease with GDocs and classroom.
A1 Standard Mandated Training, then working in Classrooms.
A1) Chromebook... because I'm waiting on a new MacBookPro
A1: love the tablet form factor. iPad is go to device but have grown to love Nexus Android tablet now that have used it more
A1. Loved using https://t.co/za1oZBpbni to record PD sessions so those who miss it or PLC who wants to review it can do so
Agnostic in devices. Just recognize tech as not a tech issue but a literacy issue reshaping how we read, write, and participate
I like to use computers because they are versatile and accessible.
Different devices have different strengths and weaknesses...how they are used is what counts!
yes! Will you be at on Oct?
A1 Whatever the student has. The more natural the flow to content, and the fewer impediments the better.
A1: Whatever works best for what I'm doing in class that day.
A1: For me, my iPhone. Calendar, Drive, camera when I'm out in buildings and see great things, texting and email.
noooooo say it isn't so 🙃
Devices can mean anything .. doesn't have to be what type of computer we use.
A1: Currently limited in tech at my school. We have a SMART board, but student devices are limited
Though as someone who has done many 1:1 roll-outs I get giddy at GAFE and chromebook and grown at iCloud and iPads
. True but what are YOU using?
a lady who I can relate to!
A1) Whatever is appropriate for the school’s environment. Tablet/Laptop/Chromebook, etc. https://t.co/WwJydFUm8o
Q1: What is your current device of choice in education? Why?
A1: I still don't have a favorite. I use a Yoga, Note4, and chromebook every day. Might be OS related not HW :)
Laptops really are superior for secondary ed. All of our specialty classes can run their programs too.
Thanks, Alex. I'm from an all-girls high school just outside Philadelphia. haven't been on in a while
A1 Truthfully, whatever I can get my hands on! Chromebook, iPad, laptop.
you bet! I love the ability to sync my devices
groan not grown...but skills can still grow on an iPad, bc in the end the teacher is most important device.
- curious - For you, or for kids or for everyone?
A1 no matter. We have middle schools on iPads, 3 HS get to pick - PC, Mac or BYOD
actually it is the 50 dell laptops I have
I amd at an all girls HS. Glad you are here!
A1 I am a Chromebook fan. Inexpensive, versatile, and quite durable in my experience.
Have to say as much as I love they are lagging is doing better with dictation and the whole format
A1: Many schools/teachers I support have only SMART board, no student devices - ideas???
We have Windows machines and Chromebooks. For me the Chromebooks have been a lifesaver in getting digital devices in Math/Science
If I could have any device in class it would be the Pro, but they are pricey.
A1:As a new teacher I am thankful for any devices that I have available to help enhance my lessons and promote student learning.
as a joke to Susan. My go to decide is my surface pro and ipad. I go back & forth
I float between my Surface Book, Macbook Pro, and iPad.
A1: Reliable Wifi. We have Windows laptops & Chromebooks, but as long as you can access Chrome, user experience is the same
A1: falling in love with a specific device is dangerous and limiting. Make the activity what counts - then pick device
Swim lessons are over so I need to tend to wet kids. Please consider signing up for Global Class Connect https://t.co/sin6qz6t6r
haha whoops! I'm with you then, I love having 2 screens. Hard to get anything done without them...
A1 - I did break the mold and get for my three year old
we have to play nice...for now
Agree. I get angry when I'm trying to do work at home and only have my one laptop.
. does this mean the Teacher is always the one having the fun and doing the learning? that would be sad.
A1: In Community Ed, we have to incorporate whatever devices adult students bring so it could even be a flip phone
A1: Microsoft Surface Pro covers all the bases, , digital inking, wireless video, Cloud sharing https://t.co/I15tTl09UF
A1 iPads 3-8, Surface 9-12
Yes! Let the device be the tool. Personal prefs exist, but Ts can make lots of devices work w/ a bit of elbow grease
Q2 coming up in 1 minute…
I bought a pre-paid Moto G and took out sim for my 3-year old (50 dollars like Kindle Fire)
A1: I’m pretty device and OS agnostic. As I said, whatever is appropriate to the school. https://t.co/WwJydFUm8o
Q1: What is your current device of choice in education? Why?
I am an OS polygamist. I go with any device
us too but like what is doing in the backend, would love a device that harnesses both
Q2: In what direction do you see devices and/or operating systems moving?
- there are lots of great resources for iPad classrooms - would be a great place to start
how do you do this? I was wondering what to do with Ss without smart phones
do the kids have phones or no?
I love my Surface Pro, it's the best device I've ever purchased.
Love hearing all the versatile choices everyone is mentioning. It is important to prepare our Ss to work on all diff devices
YES! I was wondering the same thing!
We're making ipad minis available for those who don't have anything. Still in infancy though
A1: If no S devices, then start w/ collab groups and one laptop. Build from there. Use SB as leverage
A2. Going? I don't believe we have the ability to dream this big - we can try but most here weren't raised to "wonder"
A2: GAFE does it, but I expect more OS/apps to work at making collaboration easier, and live/in-real time (at least I hope)
A2: web based tools are where it's at and devices that can optimize that
Everything saved in the cloud.
A1: Anything that doesn't make my carpel tunnel feel worse! I enjoy the MacBook Pro.
A1, pt2 our device choice driven by fac & student needs; reassess every year to plan ahead
A2: I see devices becoming more mobile and easier for kids to pick up and move to collaborate, present, etc.
A2) All cloud all the time.
A2 Cloud based. If not OS of all devices, storage/apps is already moving that direction. Anything to make collaboration easier
Chrome@and the Google suite has helped level the device playing field - but wifi is key!
A2: touch screen key, along with accessibility options that at robust are key
Hello tweeps! Tina from TN late to the party!
A2: In a continuous direction away from what is to whatever will be simply because that's what keeps us buying more.
A2: I honestly see Microsoft stepping up their game. Would like to get more classroom friendly like google
A2: As technology get less expensive, more touch screen devices in our schools with cloud saving abilities.
Why didn't I think of that? I know what santa can bring this year! https://t.co/rUq29qydMI
I bought a pre-paid Moto G and took out sim for my 3-year old (50 dollars like Kindle Fire)
A2 More inviting of investigation and tinkering by students. Most now are polished and packaged for consumers not learners.
Whoot Whoot! Welcome Tina!
I've been so interested in getting this - do you think it's worth it ?
A2 Everything in the cloud and everything has the ability to collaborate.
A2: 1:1 with some sort of Chromebook and cloud-based programs for students to use.
Into the hands of rich and white and void among students of color and the underserved.
A2 convergence, with cloud integration
A2: Seems like every tech tool is making collaboration easier. I think you'll continue seeing more sharing abilities.
A2: I think chromebooks are going to climb bc we're doing more & more in the cloud & they're economical
A2: But, classroom furniture needs to progress as well. Have you seen kids try to fit a device and notebook on HS desks?
A2 has made huge strides...but what if they don't have connectivity at home? Or other limitations
A2: Is this the question where the answer is Skynet, or is that coming later?
TOTALLY agree! https://t.co/CegmCOVDt8
A2: I honestly see Microsoft stepping up their game. Would like to get more classroom friendly like google
Q2: In my experience more cloud based, mobile, and agnostic. The device will be easy enough for K-6 but powerful enough for 7-12
A2: mobile phones and wearable tech. I see personal device and user choice leading the way.
We are at a point where teachers must seize helm. Lets make commitment to open in both our pedagogy and resources
. insert meme here https://t.co/H6Wg5XTs6s
A2: Is this the question where the answer is Skynet, or is that coming later?
A2: In some ways, I feel that tech is widening our achievement gap as the rich can gather more and more resources
A2: direction of devices to me is already available - ANY DEVICE, from ANY WHERE. but some ppl still lock themselves in.
love that you are joining
A2 apple moving to a more sandbox environment. Microsoft having 1 OS for everything. Google android = everything
A2: Everything is moving toward Cloud & platforms like . Hopefully, device specs will become irrelevant.
hello friends!! Been to long!
Skynet=Pearson is the new glitter.
. We already deal with that in large part. Not everyone is always connected. Adapt your program to your Ss
that question written to troll me
A2. wearables, crossover between OS, increase in accessibility
thx! It's been a while since I've made it
need all cloud but ability to create off line that can upload when connectivity available
I hope so. I really want to jump on the Apple Watch train, but I can't see a reason for it yet.
Agree on the furniture. Our lifelong learning program is moving computer labs to pop up desks
They don't need to be on Wifi anymore. They can work offline :) https://t.co/KURglaXsfN
A2 has made huge strides...but what if they don't have connectivity at home? Or other limitations
A2-cont: Augmented and Virtual Reality! This is going to be easier and more accessible! https://t.co/Ar0NKBSeyM
Q2: In what direction do you see devices and/or operating systems moving?
At ISTE I asked a Microsoft rep how they saw their education cloud based platform preforming. He said Almost as good as Google
wearables also means trackable. Do we want to quantify everything?
I agree! so how do we fix that?
A2: one OS to rule them all and in the darkness bind them.
Device specific content is mostly a matter of marketing and control.
We must do something about this. It's a serious issue.
https://t.co/SNokk4dNTS
A2: In some ways, I feel that tech is widening our achievement gap as the rich can gather more and more resources
A2 lowcostcraze has stabilized- devices&tech matching needs of population= better long term investment; cloud &collab= good path
A2: Everything moving to the cloud in which collaboration is easily accessible
A2:cloud-based and more portable. There isn't much a S can't do on a smartphone these days and Ts are starting to take advantage
Yes, the Digital Divide is unfortunately all too real.
Yes, they can create offline now. It's great!
A2: would love to see everything be linux/unix based core - IOS already there, android/chrome sort of now microsofts turn
that may be more app based and not OS based
I don't think we should expect OS to be the same. Diff. features for diff. needs. I love iOS for phone, but Google for workflow
. Good luck with that. :)
could that be said for all edtech?
He must not use it that often then.
A2: similar to answers in q1, platform agnostic as long as can: save and share files, collaborate. For now, works best
we need all Ss to have their hands on which bodes for cost-effective and accessible devices
hello :0)
- This is a great Twitter chat the join on Monday evenings!
A2: we need the interoperability or linux type systems if we are going to really make cloud systems transparent
all I want to use forms offline
Q3 coming up in 1 minute…
Q3: To type or to not to type-is a keyboard mandatory in your mind? Other peripherals?
and this upsets parents. We have to recognize it. Also not true, we do not have to cede privacy.
Agreed! I’ve predicted that MS will eventually build windows on top of Linux.. leverage that developer work
What's the benefit to users of iOS being linux/unix based? I agree as an engineer, but why do teachers care?
I was just fixing to give you a howdy!
A2- We are seeing many schools moving in the direction of iPads- $300, reliable, students can use Google or Microsoft apps.
Android is definitely built on Linux, you can even get a term app and have a command line.
A3: Not if the creativity you can express is more descriptive than your words
This is why I wasn't an early adopter of Chromebooks.
A3: Yes, absolutely. For long-term typing or data entry, need a keyboard. On-screen for shorter work. Stylus always helpful.
A3 edtech supports visual learning, integral to today's learners
A3 Keyboards are needed, at this point. All the time, no, certainly not, but right now, it is a skill still needed.
my bias shows - but if apps become universal building blocks, customization becomes easier for teachers
okay I am loving the new Google forms for education!
A3: I believe keyboards will be obsolete one day but at this stage, it is mandatory in our school.
is really great, lots of ways to use, easy to set up
A3. Not mandatory. Also it's fun to see how bad your OS messes up your text-to-type. Also video.
A3: I worry about moving away from keyboards. Writing skills are bad enough already!
A2 follow up: Smartphone, PC, and MacOS are ALL how I do my job. Ss need to learn to use all tech interchangeably
A3: from a work perspective - keyboarding is still main input mechanism. helps to have keyboard skills
How do you prevent tracking?
I am glad someone else says fixin' to
I totally agree. If they could make the Surface Pro more reasonably priced for schools, they'd crush everyone.
A3 focus on keyboarding (as well as cursive) in lower school, MS and US more flexible w/ type/write/alt input
A3: absolutely, but it needs to be taught at a younger level and not wait until high school anymore.
A3: Feel like keyboarding programs should be used, but feel the best use is Ss typing w/in other programs Integration is key!
It is hard when a certain company makes the best collaborative software….
A3 - Depends on what you are doing ... tech should match what you are doing NOT the other way around. Tech shouldn't limit.
I agree that keyboarding needs to be taught at a young age.
A3: Depends what you're doing. I'm an Eng T so I really still see value in typing. Essay writing on an tablet is not great imo
A3: I agree that students need to know keyboarding, but for my math class it isn't essential
A3: until online testing isn't requiring them then they are mandatory. Printers are the bane of my existence.
A3) Keyboard for papers, thesis, dissertation, and fun things like that, but not needed for every day.
What do you think will replace keyboards? Voice still impractical in most settings - definitely great for some.
A3: for now, but as technology and more voice recognition software advances the need will decrease
A3: I think it's still mandatory, but the stylus has become a lot better lately.
A3: Keyboard shouldn't be mandatory - especially with speech to text. Helps on iPads because it saves screen space.
High school!!? omg that is way way late to learn keyboard skills....
A3: we need to teach keyboarding, dictation and handwriting (including cursive). All have a purpose and a place.
Screencasting apps can be great for Ss to explain their reasoning in math, but not always practical
but a point where we could track eye dilation and student motivation through facial recognition.
Agreed! Typing education needs to start in elementary school.
A3 Interesting question. Some studies show note taking on kbd is less effective.
What if keyboarding was tied to learning the alphabet?
A3:Dev apprt time is debatable. Use touch devices & voice typing to differentiate. Typing shouldn't prevent S from using
Is this where the private schools who don't have to give pointless standardized tests take time to gloat?
yes! Keyboarding should be an elementary based skill
Then we wouldn't have a qwerty keyboard.
I've read that too. Recall is way lower with notes taken on keyboard.
A3:yes,today's Ss need to be familiar w/keyboard bc colleges/busi are requiring skills for online LMS®istration to ordering
A3 can't currently multitask w/o one AND
I don’t know the answer besides voice but something is always invented.
I am teaching 2 sections this semester and 3 in the spring. I keep petitioning to have it go down to the elementary
I agree. You need keyboard to code which is the new driving force in ed
very true! you remember more taking notes by hand
With focus on importance of coding, keyboard is 'key' for now.
- we can't keep passing everything down
A3: Yes, keyboard is essential if you believe is critical skill. Also, camera is great. Make sure USB port
I come from the camp of never dictating what external storage device people prefer as they read.
A3: My question is actual keyboard or just on screen? Makes a difference to me, but not sure how it affects students
I taught it to 3rd graders when I was an e,even tart teacher for 2 years. That's when I learned it.
Why must we have a one size fits all type of mentality? If a kid wants a keyboard ... give them a keyboard.
A3 Instead of teaching keyboard, pose the q to students. Let them research & come up with an answer.
Agreed. If I type notes, I remember very little. All muscle memory for me. Sketchnoting's so powerful b/c it engages
Will voice activation quickly replace the need to do this? https://t.co/GIf4BBaub4
A3: Yes, keyboard is essential if you believe is critical skill. Also, camera is great. Make sure USB port
try markup a webpage without a keyboard or writing a 2,000 word essay.
A3 I learn more effectively when I type notes rather than write them by hand… then again, I can rarely read my handwriting.
Think about a crowded classroom full of dictating Ss. Might not be best thing.
not sure it's "passing it down" as reallocating or putting it where it has best impact.
I also remember the change from handwriting and typing school paper revisions to a computer text editor.
I taught myself to deal with onscreen keyboard but I think case by case basis important
Voice to text sounds trendy and cool, until you have 20 kids in your room talking into their devices.
Still necessary for correcting & people like Dr's who need to enter terms that speech to text can't handle (yet)
A3: As an English teacher, I like having the physical keyboard. For shorter assignments, typing on the screen is fine.
I understand, and I can't live without a physical one, but can the onscreen be a replacement?
agreed. My entire 1st quarter is centered around keyboarding.
I need the feel of the keys, but I also need to hold the book I'm reading. Maybe onscrn keys a genertional shift?
Q4: What do you like about the current devices your students use?
No but I soon see a future for the virtual keyboard that is an augmented projection in front of touchscreen
I feel I am more articulate when I write (type) than when I speak. Not sure how voice recognition wld affect that
The effect on the quality of my writing was dramatic. Revisions were no longer mind numbing repetition.
what will the keyboard look like as technology advances....kinda like a helmet hasn't advanced too much over the years
I think teaching keyboarding and teaching dictation are equally important
That's what these kids are growing up with. They're very skilled on it.
A3: Keyboarding skills are current reality. Hate seeing kids waste cognitive efforts manipulating devices. Teach keyboarding.
Kids came to my 6th Grade computer class typing 5-10 wpm. Not good. Has to start earlier.
but that is how we we taught? Could this generation now need the touch feedback?
A4: The thing is I don't like our current devices, we have netbooks from 2010
I agree that is the future, just hope I can get used to it when it comes!
. distinction...pondering bc we can use voice to text&split keyboarding for mobile, typing papers has me thinking
It's debatable. Writing involves story-board, outline, edit, insert. All better w/ keyboard than voice input.
Like having a technology class at this stage of the game. It's not a separate thing.
I'm with you Nate. Still need my traditional books and old school key board.
A4 I love that the Chromebooks log them into all their apps and everything saves automatically. No more losing their work.
teach them to talk to the microphone in a softer voice! They often think mic in wrong place
wonder if SBAC shed light on this We could compare, if controlling for other variables, Chromebook vs iOS
it's less about software and more about content :)
A4: With a laptop, you can do essentially everything you need to.
Can we teach emoji keyboarding
A4 This doesn't always happen, but I like that they research and choose them.
A4: Students use windows devices tied to both O365 and GAFE. Nothing stops them from getting work done!
A4 I like that lots of our Ss can use their phones to learn and consume & sometimes produce
Once we realize how much variance typing skills play in explaining SBAC/PARCC scores keyboarding become mandatory everywhere
A4: I like the versatility of iPads. Just started using a MDM in the last year. Makes life so much easier
A4: for iPads go to device for ease of use, the apps and most of all the built in accessibility options
Best of both worlds! Beautiful! https://t.co/3Dkihul0Bt
A4: Students use windows devices tied to both O365 and GAFE. Nothing stops them from getting work done!
A4: I'm liking our Chromebooks, and so are the kids. Faster, easy to adapt, great battery life.
A4: the fact that they are brand new and easy to use. Chromebooks are so simple and easy.
A4 - Flexibility ... I have MacBookAirs ... kids use iPads, PC, BYOD in other classes, but they always ask to use the Macs
A4 Julie from Chattanooga, TN jumping in. We are byot. Pros and cons to this but it makes Ss realize there are choices
There is a lot of ways to input data, how do we really measure which is best?
oooohhhhh wingdings...but I would like the class to be about Comic Sans to piss off the Internet
Maybe. I do find myself jabbing at my PC screen pointlessly. That could also be old age...
A4: I love iPads. So many apps for Ss to create and have truly amazing projects.
A4: I like that the Ss can look up anything whenever they need to. 1:1 embeds research into every lesson
I know some schools choose CB's b/c of keyboard - but much of that is old school thought, not innovative
How about asking the students which is best for them?
but I am afraid I will not be able to sketch everything that is relevant
how about those that need accessibility options?
. Chromebooks work great with sans the precise digital inking
A4 - love that Ss find/devise uses (HW & app combos) that Ts did not think of, to solve real problems / streamline workflow
Choose One:
Common Sense or Comic Sans
You can't have both :)
A4: access at their fingertips to connect, research, collaborate
Q4 coming up in 1 minute…
Content is at the top of the curriculum hierarchy. Software attempts to emulate real thought, but isn't
Joining late! A1: Chromebooks! Love the versatility
Agreed. Can't sketchnote MicroBiology terminology. I see it as amazing review tool Terms/Vocab are diff
we work with those students individually b/c of different accomodations
ummm ... I will go with the trifecta as my kids can do all that and Pages ... Keynote ... They know no Limits
Welcome! Q4 coming up soon!
I take all visual notes and capture more imo. Visuals are strong recall
Awesome to ask my their experiences & receive so many responses. Great to model the power of twitter w .
A4 Currently use iPads with Ss but are looking into Chromebooks. I see value in both for different reasons.
Right now for me no one device is it...it's what device is most it for my learners and their needs
true...differentiate instead of one size & ask Ss what they want to try
they don't always know in advance :)
software help provide access to content, act as analytical lens, make content remixable
they are nice until you hit their limits ... iMovie/Garageband are limited on iPad ... better on the Mac
try several tools & learn as they grow
also fact that the cost is 2 for 1, the device management volumes easier, and you get the real web
Any schools distributing mixes of iPad and Chromebook out there?
I agree on that...which holds the most benefit for our students right now? And what would you change in each!
A4:❤️ the simplicity of getting up and running on a CB. Not a lot to break and easy to operate!
Q4: We have Chromebooks! Prefer the workflow over iPad. Ability to practice typing. Ss more likely to use laptops in career
I am an advocate of getting as many different devices for the kids to use as possible ...they all have positives.
1 of the reasons phys books have better recall. Location of terms help. Need strategies
A4: Key is really sustained PD with follow-up. Assess. Use social media for convo, video demos, and real humans
OK there is a book out there about sketchnote taking. What is it? Maybe I will learn something new this year :)
OK there is a book out there about sketchnote taking. What is it? Maybe I will learn something new this year :)
We have both. We tend to lean more towards the Chromebooks and use iPads for math.
A4: We have Macs and iPads. Depending on the activity or goal, we switch. Ss prefer typing blogs on the laptops.
Yes! Just got one! I'll send on to you.
A2: Everything moving to your butt in which collaboration is easily accessible
If we're talking mult. literacies, it's important to teach Ss how to read both
no. NO!
At least it's not Jokerman...clearly I taught MS.
Being able to move between devices is an important skill for Ss.
off topic, but I respectfully disagree. Visual notetaking = pictures+words, not -words
we're piloting both at a high school
For LD learners right now iPads are the best for accessibility options with ease
A4: Love our iPads. Allows for so much creation from Ss & Ts. Not used to take notes - used to create to demo understanding.
A4 cont: Ts and Ss spend more time learning content vs device and with u can adapt to any device in the future.
I love iPads for documentation and showing thinking! Chromebooks have more versatility for most work in my room
Q5: What considerations need to be addressed in designing the ultimate student device?
RT Q5 https://t.co/ZZpSLeoT35
Q5: What considerations need to be addressed in designing the ultimate student device?
I couldn't agree more -- the internet has turned students into visual learners https://t.co/x3pkWGS2nL
off topic, but I respectfully disagree. Visual notetaking = pictures+words, not -words
A5: Durability and functionality for a price that schools will pay
What district do you work @? I would love to hear more about the backend of this and how it functions in school
A5: Is it going to be something that all Ss can use? How much training is nec.? Cost/Benefit analy.? Must elevate learning.
A5: Ability for all students to be engaged/participate
I would love to hear more about the deployment at your school
A5: The ultimate consideration needs to be DIVERSITY...would love to have the option for different devices in my bldg
A5: Battery life, weight, Battery life, durability, battery life, size, battery life, portability, battery life
A5 Durability Devices need to withstand the rigors of actually being used. Can’t leave them locked up for fear of breaking them.
See, I always felt like the iPad was limited in its creation. Unless you're using an app, you can't really produce
Well put. Mine have words b/c I can't draw. I thought 'artists' wouldn't include words
A5: Price, filter control, web/no apps.
Sounds awesome what options in HS are you considering? and do Ss self elect to the device?
A5 Durability, price, battery life, cloud based
A5 Student voice, research, and choice
Q5 coming up in 1 minute…
A5 Eventually, hardware will be diverse like phones -- variations on a theme that connect with one another
A5 - age of Ss, curriculum design, recognize that any optimal device= point in time/ moving target | good today not good next yr
When you app smash the possibilities become endless. Creating iBooks w/ videos, links, screencasts, etc..
I like iPads for that reason too. Seesaw is one of my favorite apps to share S work with Ps.
A5: Ss needs, accessibility, ability to enhance Ss experience as they learn&connect to achieve curri goals https://t.co/ZtvxlTTN8o
Q5: What considerations need to be addressed in designing the ultimate student device?
The very best review ever. Watch, then get your copy of "The Not Perfect Hat Club" today:\… https://t.co/DweUdAMAmb
A4: love that they can take their iPads home, have access to so many apps at the touch of their hands
A5 Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
I've sat by some amazing artists sketchnoting at conferences and I feel bad about myself
A5: It doesn't get in the way. Hand to kids and get started with small learning curve for Ss and Ts.
How easy is the feedback loop is important to me.
A5: It has to be durable and reliable. The ability to produce is key. Cost is always a factor too.
Totally didn't think of this & its important! https://t.co/JlBqvOqvYZ
A5: Battery life, weight, Battery life, durability, battery life, size, battery life, portability, battery life
whatever Katrina comes up with a dell
A5: portability, cost, can the Ss take it home? Constant wifi access for those without internet at home?
A5: I think humans have a tendency to reduce cognitive load when given choice. RTs & easy quotes can do that.
Ability to use more than just apps, current techonologies are moving to cloud based solutions but we are not there yet.
I get that, but our tech and engineering classes need more than just apps.
A5 - flexibility. I like my laptop for office work. I love my iPad for creativity
A5: cost (long and short term) 💰, durability 💪🏻, longevity 💀, and adaptability 🐙
I get too caught up in creating a code to quantify what is relevant :)
Glad to hear people disagree. Makes for a deeper conversation.
A5: battery life. External components/accessories. USB ports.
Both- iPads K-2 and Chromebooks 1-6. I have a cart with both in my 1-2 room and K borrows. 4-6 has own carts.
A5: Depends on the goal of having the device. Could be student engagement, support of content, building future ready students
A5: cost, connectivity, Accessibility, learning curve and cloud based
If everyone agreed it would be a pretty boring world. https://t.co/FqKFvZoM87
Glad to hear people disagree. Makes for a deeper conversation.
A5: Make PD interesting &engaging if you want greater particiation. Conduct interest survey first; determine needs
Also building 3d models, augmented reality, video game creation, etc.
Secaucus Public School District. Anytime!
A5 Ability to use more than just apps, current techonologies are moving to cloud based solutions but we are not there yet.
Every time I see kids with Chromebooks, including my own kids, they are always sitting at a desk or a table
Right tool for the right job. Our engineering classes use PC's too. I'm a Mac guy, but sometimes Ss need PC
investing in the teachers before the devices.
A5 a screen that doesn't break when you look at it
but it was such a good book!
you must live in house with no mirrors.
if it is with style then that is ok
We credit so much of the success of our 1:1 program to the amount of time we gave Ts to learn tech & skills
Q6 coming up in 1 minute…
Q6: What is on your wish list for the future of devices for education?
I'd love lots of offline capabilities for schools with limited access
Always be looking at the big picture, identify critical paths and address needs.
A6: More capabilities for schools where only the teacher has a device!
A6: A device in every students hands, available all day. School and home
Great point! Let's add to that: invest in Ts using quality pedagogy, teaching critical thinking, & engaging learners.
when you get a chance, watch Rachel Smith's Ted Talk on visual notes - illuminating
A6 anything that I can place a zillion stickers on the cover
A6 more devices, and more accessibility for students outside of school.
A6: A device that is durable and student friendly that can be easily updated.
True, so many people think 1:1 and connectivity. Technology doesn't always need a connection.
I would love my iPad and my nexus tablet to marry and create a united offspring with optional keyboard
A6: My wish list is 1:1 AND time to train Ts and Ss
please share a link if you can
my Ts that's piloting 1:1 w/CBs had Ss in scavenger hunt w/ QR codes carrying CBS thru school & using camera to record
A6 something price smart/ can annotate and has a keyboard/ durable/ not easily attacked by viruses https://t.co/cCxb5R3Z9K
Q6: What is on your wish list for the future of devices for education?
A6 Direct neural interfaces. Too far off? I'll settle for stereo graphics and more GPU capabilities.
Great point! Training is critical!
Portability, wifi, and multiple input means key
A6: Wish list isn't device-centered bc every device is a tool. My wish is for all Ts to learn the skills to leverage devices.
is that like cross breeding pokemon?
A6: First on my list: A manufacturer that will build it. We had a frat relationship with a computer company some years back.
I'm a huge fan of visual notes. Love to encourage Ss to use them in other classes
The camera is awkward, but it works. https://t.co/63mpkK6Trl
my Ts that's piloting 1:1 w/CBs had Ss in scavenger hunt w/ QR codes carrying CBS thru school & using camera to record
Terrific statement! https://t.co/oWpga8plEd
A6: Wish list isn't device-centered bc every device is a tool. My wish is for all Ts to learn the skills to leverage devices.
hahha maybe but it's then all powerful and can help you level up
A6 an easy button would be nice... but really just make software that is web based. Web 3.0 Here we come
A6: Offline capabilities, more support for teachers in implementation, teacher collaboration in unique ways to use devices
Maybe we should call it something else? Visually enhanced notes? Non-linear notetaking? https://t.co/WAGDlW6IjN
I'm a huge fan of visual notes. Love to encourage Ss to use them in other classes
Trying to remember the amount Districts should be placing into professional learning when spending HUGE $ on devices
for the win! https://t.co/pTNLld4hjV
Maybe we should call it something else? Visually enhanced notes? Non-linear notetaking? https://t.co/WAGDlW6IjN
I'm a huge fan of visual notes. Love to encourage Ss to use them in other classes
oh you want a surface book
I have a Linux screensaver that does that.
A6: available 4 all Ss...inc functioning in rural area w/limited access&provided for Ss/districts w/o funds to buy,equality
Yes - amazing what you can do with current web based (cross platform) content now.
I'd like the discussion to be less about device, more about connecting, creativity, collaborating and creating
Non-linear note taking is good. But then it sounds like too much nerd talk. Tough to sell that to HS Ss
but that is exactly what you described
A6: More cross-platform compatibility, and willingness of Ts to flow between devices. https://t.co/GljGa7tbDH
Q6: What is on your wish list for the future of devices for education?
Noted for future chat! https://t.co/5YYd9BjTox
I'd like the discussion to be less about device, more about connecting, creativity, collaborating and creating
But also, devices with built-in coffeemakers
I have seen it in action it is lacking
A6: Future device needs to level the playing field. Something that all Ss can access and collaborate on to accomplish learning
Need to do that through encouragement and showing Ts that it's a priority. Give them time no matter what
Surface Book is pretty awesome. Says the Mac/Linux/Win guy
Thanks all for the great discussion
. No, that would be like the TV/VCR combo. When the device breaks, gotta toss a good coffeemaker!
lets cross the surface pro with an ipad pro - I think that's what I want! :)
Thanks for joining this week’s ! Don’t forget to follow your new connections from tonight!
Ned great topic to come next! Want to lead it? Let us know!
I'm in favor of anything involving as a path to student creativity!
You're right. This was why my father would never buy that TV for us. Smart guy!
Glad I made it to ! Thx for the growth tweeps!
and many more for things that used to take decent computers to run now run on CB and iPad
add in a rsaberrypi so it is a PiFace Pro!
Thanks Everyone! Especially & for moderating!
a clear vision that explains how technology will support student learning & help teachers develop necessary instructional strat.
