Welcome to ! Please introduce yourself and tell us, did you ever have a PenPal? Where was he/she from?
Help me welcome our guest moderators for tonight: and staff: ; ;
Third grade teacher from North Dakota. Does your Grandma count as a PenPal?
Hey all, Jillian from Athens, GA here. I did have a PenPal, but they were just from a nearby elementary. Nothing too exotic :)
Glad to participate in this chat on such an important topic!
Mark here from in Austin, TX! Thx for having us as co-hosts tonigh !
I’m Heather Singmaster your organizer and host. I had penpals in France, Ghana, Spain, and Japan when I was growing up!
Yes! My son's pen pal right now is his cousin.
Brian--Social Studies Teacher from SW Mo. No real pen-pal--Maybe some people from summer camp.
Thanks for joining us Larisa!
Connie from NY - I had pen pals across U.S. in elementary school.
That's ok, a pen pal anywhere is better than no pen pal at all!
Hi everyone here from the Outer Banks here in NC. My classes have been using Pen Pal schools and we love it!
Hi! Kim from NC third grade! Happy to be here!!

Hi from Ottawa Ontario. Longtime childhood PP from Netherlands. We met in lerson at age 16!!
But would you believe I never had a PenPal growing up?? Luckily I have a few now...
My first PenPal was in 3rd grade...she was from Ireland and I still remember every photo she sent!
Hola Stella! Bienvenidos a !
Hi ! We are a tech startup in New Zealand with a passion for education! Sorry we are a bit late! https://t.co/iPH8VI23dd
A1: mine has students from farms and Ss who want to learn; most days!
A1: We had an awesome space theme that went with the "Our Goals Are Out of This World" learning goals tracker!
A1 They are characterized by freedom and self-guided innovation supported by Ss’ choice & voice & inspired by Global CP.
Are your students involved in deciding how you setup your learning space?
I was just visiting my mom and she pulled out all of my old pen pal letters! So fun!
A1 Collaborative spaces set up through out the room, seats I have made, high tables, low tables, cushions, variety of seats 😊
A1: We also had a classroom library that was organized alphabetically, by genre, and by language (Spanish/English).
A1: We are a regional school with students from several surrounding counties.
Moving away from rows of desks. More collaborative learning spaces for students.
A1 lots of white board space for the Ss to work in collaborative groups. A kidney table with white board paint!
A1: my learning spaces include the classroom, a greenhouse, and a garden space on an average day.
Wow! I really love this idea! We all need somewhere like this https://t.co/UkgNMags5W
I always set up "an island" which is quiet space with a lovely island photo for times when kids need to take a mome… https://t.co/3SMdNXXFf7
Q1: Learning spaces around the world are often similar but sometimes very different! What makes your learning space… https://t.co/mxD8Bfr89j
A1: My son's 1st grade classroom is all collaborative space - they sit in groups which they switch throughout the day.
Question 2 coming up in just about one minute!
it's certainly good for adults too!
Q2: How has your learning space changed since you began teaching? What catalyzed this change? https://t.co/kX9rlblZUg
Ken from Western Oregon Univ. just arriving
Hi' I'm Meredith! Sorry I am late to the . No pen pals but I feel like Twitter makes up for that!
A1: I love learning spaces that facilitate movement. Ss learn best when they can walk around and ask each other questions!
A2: When I started teaching in 2009 the "U" shaped formation was standard. We then moved to groups/centers and added .
For sure! I try to allow s's out of seats once a day--even if it's small.
A2 Always had the traditional rows, maybe two Ss next to each other now nothing but groups! With flex seating!
A2 I now use tables because I needed more space.
Hey Ken! Did you ever have any pen pals?
A2: A shift towards , more access to , and more confidence managing a class led to the changes.
Loved the U shape set up! Agree with you nothing but groups now!
A2: When I started 10 yrs ago, it was so 1900's... Really made drastic changes 2 years ago as I moved toward PBL classroom.
A1 Mine's mobile. Consists of university classrooms, my house den, Oregon schools,& social media - allowing it to be worldwide
A2 working in groups more around the room as well, not just the traditional sit in your seats and work quietly!
I did as an elem student with a student in England
my learning space is my Zoom room! Great connections and friends are there most everyday.
A2 They've evolved into S-centered 21st Cent. scenarios scaffolded by global CP with ICT mediation & soft skills in action.
A2: Ss are more in charge of their learning and I'm much more the guide on the side.
What are some of your favorite options?
Do your students have a voice in how your classroom is arranged?
A2: flexible seating to allow collaboration. Optional standing desks. 1:1 technology
GREAT QUESTION we often forget to ask! Ask Ss what they need in learning spaces.
We use standing desk ! I can't imagine working without one! https://t.co/6wt52Zlx2F
A2: flexible seating to allow collaboration. Optional standing desks. 1:1 technology
I allow s's to move chairs or sit wherever they want--makes collaboration most possible.
Yes, I'm lucky. All our furniture is moveable w/ wheels. So looks different based on activity.
A2 Collaboration b/w STEM professionals & K-12 educators plus innovative technologies + leadership in education driving change
A2 When 1st taught confined to 4 walls w/exception of Ss having vol penpal. Internet/Social Media changed my space
A2: Crazy how fast things have changed in <10 years, the most innovative my school got was short-loan laptop and desk circles!
The kids like the autonomy to take the time and are great at managing themselves
A3: One way is by including artifacts such as art & books from different countries. Kids will ask about them!
A3: Allowing/providing opps for s's to connect to "real world" by sharing/connecting online, blogging, etc. offers real exp.
A3: Or what about including photos from international locates as backdrops on computers and the devices your Ss use!
A3: "Real work" is all collaborative teams & projects. Collaborative learning space helps students navigate these situations.
A3 Actual participation in global events ,learning while doing thru reflection and shared interests put into practice.
A3 if collaborate w/ "other" thru social media can challenge thinking. Leads to critical analysis, empathy, humanizing "other"
Sorry to be missing this tonight. Can't wait to read up later.
A3: Still working on this one. When Ss meet on GHO it can be noisy and they like a quiet place. https://t.co/hDfYs3DQOi
A3 allows Ss to work collaboratively in groups, learning how to effectively communicate and be problem solvers
I've had a few teachers complain about noise levels in a Mystery Skype
I agree. When I survey my Ss, they want to learn more with others.
So true! Communication possibly #1 most important workplace skill https://t.co/YYdfJG0Umv
A3: "Real work" is all collaborative teams & projects. Collaborative learning space helps students navigate these situations.
For sure--Necessary to create flexible spaces and use all space in the classroom!
The motto is "Learning is Better Together!"
Forgot the hashtag, lets try this again! Mark has two awesome ideas for A3, check out both! https://t.co/tBp0f1You7
A3: One way is by including artifacts such as art & books from different countries. Kids will ask about them!
Hi Everyone! Joining late! Great topic!
A3 I do a lot of what said https://t.co/73xfGpMd82
A3 allows Ss to work collaboratively in groups, learning how to effectively communicate and be problem solvers
greetings from South America....
A3: I also think maps & globes still have a place in classrooms. Ss love playing with the globes bf, during, and after class.
ha! His name's Colin. If you can find him based on that little info I remember tell him I send my regards!
Hi! Where are you joining us from? Thanks for stopping by!
yes! Great for authentic learning opportunities, too.
I have been using technology with ss for a year or so... I hope to learn more about these e-tools
Q3 Our programs provide internatnl collaboration
And you can refer to them in almost every subject you teach! https://t.co/SSdqaSxDTL
A3: I also think maps & globes still have a place in classrooms. Ss love playing with the globes bf, during, and after class.
Hi there.... I am from Ecuador, South America...
Yes, connections can be difficult because of sound but always a buzz on Mystery Skype days. Ss love it.
A3: learning spaces can encourage Ss to be flexible by offering spaces for collaboration
Sorry I'm being sporadic in participation, y'all! I'm doing this from the sidelines of my son's football game :)
Noise doesn't bother me. :)
A4: Teaching in had so many opportunities to talk outside of school! Such an international community!
I put a map outside my rm which is next to cafeteria and Ss are always around it. Lunch monitors love it there.
Q4: Field experiences, service learning in context, conversations with stakeholders and those impacted by global issues!
A4: having parents communicate with their Ss about the world around them combines school and home
A4: Opps both literally outside (take samples/do science comparisons w/other countries) or use community space - museums, etc.
A3: You can have a "collaboration station" with tech that provides international connections + research
Maybe we should petition to make an official subject area!
it would be amazing to see the tech companies in Austin with students
Outdoor learning areas offer great opportunities to talk about our planet and common global issues https://t.co/78QDfw5gbZ
A4 Learners in community come from after-school programs, youth groups, refugee camps, and many learning spaces
also awesome to see city services (EMS, Fire, PD) use to discuss topics with the public
A4: How about going to international restaurants. Fills the belly and the mind with !
so far I have use emails to send homework to my ss, I have also mused moodle, socrative, edmodo, padlet, and nearpod.
A4 connect Ss to global cultural orgs in real time w great sound $ interaction via !!!
A4: spaces can be virtual & lead to easier collaboration w global participants
For our $100K grant we are proposing local beach/waterway cleanup on ITNL beach cleanup day then global virtual connection
A4 comm forums looking at global-local impact, social media, when in entire space, for me & community was about
the big issue I have faced is when the WIFI fails in my job and my tech class is ruined, so I prefer 2 use Tech-tools as planB
Great point. I'm sure it's fascinating for Ss to compare how cities around the world manage EMS, fire and police.
A4: After school service learning can give kids the chance to explore their global concerns authentically
Hi Seth! Good to see you - good internet connection this week? ;)
A4 After school Global STEM programs are great in wish we could have more resources to serve more students!
A4 Education goes beyond school walls thru social media ,PBL, events & global digizens grouped by common goals
A5: pln, twitter chats, Instagram teachers
A5 PD communities such as here, , through travel, colleagues, the list could go on & on...
I also have my blog where I post tasks and my ss have to write comments or answer questions and then I give them feedback.
Can also be 21st Ed Tech snake oil too.
A5 I curate & review resources , interact with global communities of practice , listen to students and reflect on my praxis.
A5 As professional engineer who works in education I rely on my STEM professional network + honored to work w/great educators
my ss' parents don't get involved that much, they get in touch with me via email or talk to me when their kids get low grades.
Engineers always have to keep learning.
I used to change the map in my room every few months and not mention it. Funny and interesting reactions from Ss!
A5: Edutopia and twitter are my favorite sources. So many amazing T on twitter sharing what works/doesn't for them!
Great. How do the kids come to love maps if they never get to browse them as many of us did in the car on long trips?
A5: Don't forget to follow our fellow participants! I'm sure they share great advice and inspiration!
A5: it seems to me that the task and approach drives the learning space; consider objective then look for space ideas!
We've got a few more questions to go...thanks to everyone for the awesome contributions!
Great point. Ts should always backwards plan from the targeted student learning outcomes! https://t.co/FvlZJ0X1Md
A5: it seems to me that the task and approach drives the learning space; consider objective then look for space ideas!
A6: educate themselves on offer support for "thinking outside the desk" teachers
Q6: I loved bringing in professionals who travel regularly to come in and talk about their experience.
A6: I loved bringing in professionals who travel regularly to come in and talk about their experience.
A6 allow Ts more flexibility & choices for PD. Also, trust Ts professional choices on social media projects encouraging
A6: have more Ss get global penpals and have Skype meetings with other schools

I like to browse activities and tools on the net that might help my ss produce more and be motivated
A6 By encouragement, involvement and real inclusion in their policies.
Yes! Yes! Yes! So many great ideas can come from this & provides a sense of professionalism often missing.

Our last question is coming up in just a few minutes...
collaborative learning is the first step to agile development
A3 = Learning Stations! Celebrate what elementary teachers know works
Sorry had to take a break to read bed time stories! Catching up now!
A6: Mashup (or Matchup) two teachers, two disciplines, two topics, two classes in one space!
