is our moderator tonight and will be starting with Q1 at 8:07 PM. https://t.co/C7JySXkOus
lol she cracks me up. And then she be having me drive all the way to the mall when she want a cookie 😂
Howdy & Happy B-day Jason, Common Sense Edu Reg Mgr. for WV & geek
Too kind too kind! Thanks guys!
Brandi Wright, 5th teacher in Kanawha Co. Happy B-Day
A big kudos to for making sure I finished my Graphite 2015 cert and who has been bouncing ideas w/ me
Q1 coming up in 2 minutes!
Nicole Morris, special education teacher, Hampshire County
Q1: Define . What should it look like?
A1: should be a place to work to correct Ss behavior; !
A1: Correct the behavior and move on. Reteach, discuss, practice
A1 add-on: My middle school calls it ISA. forget what the A. Currently it's teachers rotate periods 2 watch kids do work
A1 Separate room for Ss serving out discipline referral, completing alternate activities for learning & reflecting on actions
Q2 is a poll (new feature on Twitter)! Coming up in 2 minutes.
Big component has to be behavior modification in future. https://t.co/btVu7OJHif
A1: Correct the behavior and move on. Reteach, discuss, practice
Forgot my https://t.co/G60ucwsusX
A1: If we are using just to keep Ss in school, we are missing the point! Must be structure to bring change.
A1: ISS is a disciplinary action administered as a tier 3 consequence to correcting inappropriate behaviors.
Agreed with others- teach/reteach behaviors, differentiate for different needs/levels of behaviors
Q2: Does your school or district currently offer an program?
If you are using TweetDeck, or something Similar, you will need to click on the Tweet, and then View Poll to vote.
I like the reflecting component you mention. This is missing in many ISS programs
A1: I'm mixed on this. I wish it was better tho. Not fan of whole day, no convos. Not sure it deters ones rlly need intervention.
Then all that is accomplished is Ss are not absent from school. needed https://t.co/TsEWXksUU6
That doesn't happen in ISA. Just a place for the students to go and do their work
The poll will remain active until this time tomorrow night, please share and ask others to vote!
I'm here! Getting caught up.
Deter only goes so far-how many end up there many times? https://t.co/gcEv0clFmq
A1: I'm mixed on this. I wish it was better tho. Not fan of whole day, no convos. Not sure it deters ones rlly need intervention.
Q3: What should the goal of be? Attendance? Behavior correction? Is it the first or last option?
We have some that are in there every so often. I can think of 3 off the top of my head... https://t.co/Ve2VERYI25
Deter only goes so far-how many end up there many times? https://t.co/gcEv0clFmq
A1: I'm mixed on this. I wish it was better tho. Not fan of whole day, no convos. Not sure it deters ones rlly need intervention.
Excluding cases code of conduct or schl safety, I wndr how many othr cases categrzd as non-compliant? Ss wldnt sit there& take it.
A3: I think should never be an option if we aren't doing it correctly!
A3: 2nd option. Should not only be just work work work in silence
A3: We are launching an at next week and it isn't on target with research on .
Right... Then it's not working. Behaviorist say everyone's behavior is for a reason. What reason 4 them?
A3 Goal is education! In this case, behaviors, academics, & likely emotional support. Chronic refers hve deep issues & need help
A3: Goal should be correction & punishment but not a 1st step in the discipline process unless a severe infraction.
The old adage of building a new prison for the larger population of criminals...
That is my experience too. How to we shift the focus to the why & help the kids? https://t.co/W7fqEju1Df
Our ISS students tend to be habitual offenders.
A3: Should be some suitable variation of reteach and practice like I used in elem with Ss to use with middle school. APL strategy
Are there Ts who never assign a D-hall? An ISS? R those rooms just chaos? Or is there something else going on? Hmm...
YES! The 1st stop is not https://t.co/cT4L8KIFbM
A3: Goal should be correction & punishment but not a 1st step in the discipline process unless a severe infraction.
I feel that those that are habitual have issues beyond the scope of what regular school can fix.
Understanding the function of the behavior can help eliminate it.
Not in every case, but in most
Q4: Who is responsible for monitoring the program at your schools or district?
Perhaps, but our job is to find them the appropriate help then.
This can be extremely difficult! https://t.co/rnzFXGlI8t
I feel that those that are habitual have issues beyond the scope of what regular school can fix.
ISA can only be assigned by admin @ our school. Ts can only assign lunch detention & are in charge of their Ss if so.
A4: Certain teachers are assigned to do it during one of their planning periods.
A4: Admin assigns; Classroom teachers supervise during time (Middle School)
Elementary level? I think that's common for admin to assign ISS.
A4: VP assigns ISS based on out discipline rubric. Tchrs volunteer to cover ISS during planning.
A4: & have a full-time aide who supervises
A4 Usually Ts in the school on a rotation during planning times. I heard of some paid positions in rare cases.
. We have a staff person for . Also used for academic intervention and a cool off room.
What if no one volunteers for a class period? Are they paid for giving up their planning?
Yes, of course. Sometimes that help means a different learning environment. 1/2
MS. Elem where I used to teach, the principal took the kid and watched. School of about 100 kids w/ split principal
A4: we don't have all day ISS, just recess, and it's one person's duty in place of having a lunch/recess duty- elementary
. Very little consistency with rotating staffing.
Maybe the inability to be successful in a traditional school setting is cause of the behaviors 2/2
A4: I'm not sure how to answer. Small schools are understaffed and depend on avail staff .
I didn't have time to make example, but I want to see discpln referral w/intervntion steps required to try B4 discipline assigned.
A4: Our principal will sometimes have kids in her office, but I'm not sure it is ever all day.
And I mean real intervention steps, not weak fake ones.
Care to elaborate on that “traditional” school setting? I can see non-engaging setting too! https://t.co/nlioSkPthL
Maybe the inability to be successful in a traditional school setting is cause of the behaviors 2/2
Q5 rounding third and heading for home...
Yes, they're paid. In previous years, ISS was worked into the master schedule.
Q5: How do we make time in meaningful while addressing behavior that resulted in the placement?
Why did a 12 step program enter my head just now birthday dude? https://t.co/WkiiuiMHFG
And I mean real intervention steps, not weak fake ones.
I've seen this b4 at previous schl, it happend for yrs! Punishment for too many D-halls? ISS! Sad. Ts hiding behind the pink slip.
A5: Self-reflection on why they are in . Focus on learning deficiencies to boost academics while there as well.
A5: There has to be some kind of behavior program that all teachers can easily use to work through with students to reflect
A5: needs to target negative behavior & help Ss dev a plan to eliminate neg behaviors. Ss need help processing & reflecting.
A5 needs to mirror learning settings of the reg. classroom. Collab, reflect, communication, etc. not a silent “cell”
A5: Step 1 is making sure Ts have PD and support in proactive behavior management strategies, then plans for reteach behaviors
Too many detentions=ISS. Too many days in ISS=OSS.
HAHA... 12 boxes. Ahh that may be too many. But quality attempts. Y is stdnt behave for 1 T but not another?
then a system of reflection and reteaching behaviors in that ISS setting, as needed
I agree & clear procedures for tier 2 interventions prior to
It's amazing how LITTLE is done, by many Ts, in 1st week or 2 to cultivate RELATIONSHIP w/tough students. https://t.co/pRmkUZwegS
A5: Step 1 is making sure Ts have PD and support in proactive behavior management strategies, then plans for reteach behaviors
Not that I agree with it, but I want to dig deeper into what you think.
it is an escalation by the admin, not necessarily the student behavior
Always wondered that when a Ss told me they had & I never had any probs w/ “that kid”
https://t.co/1fYBYdqa8U
HAHA... 12 boxes. Ahh that may be too many. But quality attempts. Y is stdnt behave for 1 T but not another?
Ss are complex & need support understanding their behaviors. Ss need to talk & be heard by a caring adult.
Yes! It’s not a switch that you flip. Multiple facets to examine… https://t.co/mg99WKZ1fz
Ss are complex & need support understanding their behaviors. Ss need to talk & be heard by a caring adult.
Q6: Can be a collaborative learning environment for students assigned there? If so, how?
A1 late joining tonight...at HHS we have ISS but also have Saturday School run by an administrator and 2 teachers.and NHS Ss
teacher collaboration and SAT process might help
A6: Not if we treat it like a prison! No Talking. Sit Quietly. Complete Work.
A6 Ts might rebel because collab might mean more work for them. Just a thought
We use Refocus sheets that Ss do in a buddy Ts room. Ss can refocus & rejoin class w/o interrupting instruction.
A6 Not can, it needs to be collab. Said many Xs, staff needs to be more than a guard, that supports changing Ss outlook
I've heard of that before, great idea! How do you think they are working?
thinking like a ms teacher when we all had teams of students. Seemed very effective
A1 The focus is retraining behaviors and reteaching skills. Natl. Honor Society Ss are a huge help in a volunteer role!
I seek those Ss out like a missile! Strt turning them day 1. I wrote 2 handwritten notes 1st day of schl. https://t.co/G5U3yScFXf
This is HUGE! I teach self-contained SE and building and sustaining positive relationships is vital.
. New idea, take time to figure out the problem and the problem might get better.
It’s not about the Ts. I think if support is there, they will be onboard. It’s a balancing act.
a6: Rarely@do we have students with the same grade level/subject matter. Collaboration not feasible.
Tutoring or assisting each other isn't feasible?
A6: We had clubs for pos behav Ss & refocus for Ss to reflect, create a plan to correct behav. Ss need collab to reflect & grow.
Better hurry! Q7 is coming now!
Q7: What happens if a student does not attend by skipping or being absent (excused or unexcused; suspended)?
Report back on the video!
I agree. Teach Ss & reteach expectations. Reward the good and refocus the neg behaviors.
I love this! Ss need a mentor. That one T that believes in them. This could make a huge difference.
A7: They are required to make it up on another day when ISA is being held. We don't do it every day
I thought of that, but not all lesson will be on content. Behaviors are nearly universal or peer tutoring
A7 Consequences set by school? More is not the answer-perhaps more engaging & relevant will be.
A7: It is never too late or too early to reflect & reteach appropriate behaviors. If they skip, there's always tomorrow.
Q8 is another poll, plus a response. Coming up shortly.
I thnk impct of ISS wld b clearer if schls cld eliminate those n ISS who dn't comply: late HW, didn't retrn paper signed, talking.
Q8: Has made changes to the climate of your school or district? (Poll) Does it work? (Response)
Love this! is not for late work or talking.
Our set up has stdnts completing work from regular classes. Behavior mod/discussion/tutoring done outside ISS
A8 I don't think so. Repeat offenders mixed in with the odd one here & there.
A8: If we have then are we having success with ?
Flip that & it might work better. to be
How so? Because they are present? Is this the only reason to have it?
A8. Sometimes the ISS teacher has a positive impact on the student.
Oh wow... Let me add: had their phone out in the hall, phone out n class, chewing gum.
Saturday school =support and opportunities to learn... What students need... Not everyone needs punitive! 😊
Part of me wonders if the repeats are only being used as ISA doesn't work for kid/proof is needed for a diff. envir.
Q9; last question for the night coming up next!
Not making that stuff up. But refreshing to know it doesn't happen everywhere.
My school needs to reexamine how ISS is used. It's been very ineffective this year.
A8: No bc does not lead to changed behaviors. Holding tanks do not equate reflection & behav action plans for classroom.
time out of stressful situation and quiet place to work
Q9: Any topic ideas for our next ? Let or know!
Yea when I was assigned an ISS stdnt, they'd prefer to do my Ss work than their own. https://t.co/1TD8ve21c9
A8. Sometimes the ISS teacher has a positive impact on the student.
Thanks for a great chat tonight on , ! Join us in two weeks on 1/26 for our next session. Topic TBD.
yes OSS is not always a good place for the student. Unsupervised. No one home. School giving up on student.
No, not if refocus groups continue to have same Ss in it. Something is missing if the same Ss keep missing the point.
what happens to Ss can not get a ride after school or on Sat. due to lack of parent transportation?
I feared I lrnd mor abt stdnt (by talkng to them), n ISS n my rm that day, than own T knew. https://t.co/1TD8ve21c9
A8. Sometimes the ISS teacher has a positive impact on the student.
That's been my experience. Unless trans provided, few attend. Tough.
we also have a lunch study with tutors and a mentor teacher.
A9 I'd suggest Minecraft or coding, but those would be unknown to many on here lol :)
When I did , they were suspended for a
hot topic no easy answers thanks for sharing!
Thx 4 the tonight! See you all in 2 weeks.
Great tonight. I'm honored each time I get to moderate! See you all again in two weeks!
