Welcome to #ditchbook! SO excited to be here tonight to discuss making thinking visible! I love Hattie's work and co moderating with @zonie71 so this will be a fabulous evening chat!
Hey, everyone-thanks for being here! I'm Krista & 5th Gr T in SE MI, one of your guest moderators tonight with @rlfreedm! I make my own thinking visible when I make lists, draw arrows/bubbles for frames, all when I plan. #DitchBook#MakingThinkingVisible@DitchThatTxtbk@rlfreedm
Hi #DitchBook I’m urbie. I produce/manage broadcast video supporting clinician PD. Since #EdCampWestTexas in ’13 most of my #EdTech#knowhow has been learned alongside teachers. One way I make thinking visible is traveling to conferences & streaming to https://t.co/LOENoLvqha
Q1: There is so much to Visible Thinking… How do you think visible thinking helps learners understand the content and explore ideas better than just memorizing the information? #DitchBook#MakingThinkingVisible@DitchThatTxtbk@rlfreedm

Hello! I’m Dalton, a high school ELA teacher in Plato, Mo. And I am a major doodler! Visual learner all the way. I’m not always the best at it, but that’s why I don’t teach art 😏 #DitchBook
A1. Making thinking visible allows any learner to take a deeper dive into concepts and make connections between them. When making thinking visible we are trying to explain, synthesize, apply, create. Lots of higher level skills. #ditchbook
Hey, #ditchbook! Evan Mosier, Technology Integrationist Lead Teacher and Language Arts from Davenport, IA. I'm definitely a list, and neatly organized notes kind of person!
A1: It can make content more meaningful through real life depictions, i.e. a video clip of the storming of Omaha Beach goes a lot further than a paragraph describing the scene #ditchbook
Q1: There is so much to Visible Thinking… How do you think visible thinking helps learners understand the content and explore ideas better than just memorizing the information? #DitchBook#MakingThinkingVisible@DitchThatTxtbk@rlfreedm
A1: Memorizing information doesn't mean understanding. Using images, graphic organizers, or as @joboaler would say, drawing images of your thinking, helps deeper understanding. #DitchBook
In reply to
@zonie71, @DitchThatTxtbk, @rlfreedm, @joboaler
A1) Ss like many adults are visual or tangible so giving them images, diagrams or hands on examples makes learning that much more purposeful and makes a stronger connection for Ss #ditchbook
A1: It activates more cortex in your brain. It often leads to students creating. And it's better for engagement (why it's easier to get kids to watch a movie than read a book - they can *see* the story). #DitchBook
Q1: There is so much to Visible Thinking… How do you think visible thinking helps learners understand the content and explore ideas better than just memorizing the information? #DitchBook#MakingThinkingVisible@DitchThatTxtbk@rlfreedm
A1 Visible thinking allows students to make stronger connections between concepts. It provides opportunities for Ss to create and be creative, allowing a better springboard into discussion. #ditchbook
A1: I think making things visible helps for more understanding and creativity. The more Ss create on their own the more they’ll connect with the content #Ditchbook
#DitchBook A1a In part I think the mechanical process of taking an idea and adding a form to it, taking notes or #sketchnotes of it aids transfer. It’s a holistic thing involving more of a person than repetition of an idea to drive it deep w/o as many triggers to aid recall.
A1: Visible thinking builds greater context for learners to better sustain learning. Rote memorization leads to knowledge quickly forgotten after the assessment. #ditchbook
Q1: There is so much to Visible Thinking… How do you think visible thinking helps learners understand the content and explore ideas better than just memorizing the information? #DitchBook#MakingThinkingVisible@DitchThatTxtbk@rlfreedm
A2: Visible thinking takes abstract, nebulous or dense concepts, ideas and content and anchors them in a way that the brain can eliminate access and recall demands and focus more on thinking critically and creatively in a connected and deep way. #DitchBook
A1: An image, or picture, is worth a thousand words. There's a reason why it's a cliche. You can peer into an image and take your brain into a variety of thoughts, speculation and critical thinking. #ditchbook
Q1: There is so much to Visible Thinking… How do you think visible thinking helps learners understand the content and explore ideas better than just memorizing the information? #DitchBook#MakingThinkingVisible@DitchThatTxtbk@rlfreedm
#DitchBook A1b I think @quinnovator is on to something in a recent blogpost.. https://t.co/gzGeyG3hLi .. he writes about the role of experimentation is learning. Making it visible invites feedback & improvement, innovating on an idea to make it yours.
A2. There are so many ways Ss are making thinking visible from #sketchnoting with DQs as an audience member to using it as a note taking strategies to sharing on @flipgrid. It is part of our culture. #ditchbook
A2: Every interactive presentation includes images, graphics, videos, gifs (with a hard G, haha!), because nobody wants to or deserves to see just text #ditchbook
A1: In the future, I would like my students to use hands on experiences rather than memorization so they are able to retain the information. #DitchBook
A2: Honestly, this doesn't happen much in my building (except STEM). We need to teach our teachers and administrators to shift their thinking #ditchbook
A2: My whiteboard walls for 360 instruction makes thinking visual. Kids take the next step with sketchnotes. Speed sketchnoting is a great way to spiral review with whiteboards. #DitchBook
We learned how to do a lax face off, about circuits, and the meaning behind the Greatest Showman songs. We are also getting into recycling. Love how student driven they are #ditchbook
A2: My whiteboard walls for 360 instruction makes thinking visual. Kids take the next step with sketchnotes. Speed sketchnoting is a great way to spiral review with whiteboards. #DitchBook
A1 I had a teacher once tell me as a student that making it visible makes it Real!! I’ve always believed that to be true. We write it or produce something it sticks with us longer and increases those connective fibers #ditchbook
A1: as a student myself I’ve noticed I retain more information when I connect visual material (such as graphs, pictures, charts, etc) with lecture notes/discussion. It helps me remember certain details without reaching cognitive overload. #DitchBook
A2: my favorite way to get Ss to make thinking visible is with legos or Oreos - in these examples they are showing feudalism, Federalism, and popular sovereignty. #DitchBook
A2 Creating badges for main characters from lit books, lap white boards to sketch interconnectedness in science, 6 lego challenge, and one word goals with supporting image. When Ss take a photo using their iPad to add visual to their portfolio we hit the next level! #ditchbook
I learned about it in undergrad but it was very progressive program. I drew a lot in high school but it did not have a name back then. Class of 96! #ditchbook
A2: I like visual lessons. For me, character analyses are "character sketches", book reports are "book trailers"; for my journalism class, articles become "interactive stories." Right now, while reading "Night" my Ss are creating a map of Nazi-occupied Europe #ditchbook
A1: Visible Thinking really helps me to think about those things that work best and make the deepest impact to student learning and makes me a better educator. #ditchbook
This was a focus of a portion of our PD today. We were talking about writing proficiency and having the Ss always make their thinking vosiblenwould helpnlead to better writing. #DitchBook
A2 - interesting thought from the vrain waves podcast - should we display less final products in our schools and more of the process and thinking that for us there? #ditchbook
Q2: I get out of the way and let the visual thinking happen. It looks like whatever works for the student. For some it’s a self generated sketch or doodle with a pencil. For others it’s a combo of words and doodles. Others prefer Creative Commons to use images/pics.
#DitchBook
A2: I was working with a teacher today who said her students are struggling with fractions. A colleague of mine suggested allowing students to use Legos to visualize the concept. #ditchbook
Q3: Sometimes we all need a little help to get started or something new to keep us going. What do you do to capitalize on students’ visible thinking? What are some of your favorite tips and tools? #DitchBook#MakingThinkingVisible@DitchThatTxtbk@rlfreedm
A1.2 In addition, we really have moved beyond memorization of facts. We have to connect the content, the learning, the information in real and tangible ways for Ss to go further & deeper. #ditchbook
A3. I always offer it as a choice and often Ss choose to use it on their own. We worked hard as a community to trust visible thinking. Digital or paper and coloring tools are always available. I am trying @Procreate myself when I am at conferences to model for Ss. #ditchbook
The Ss really got into it. What badge would Jack Will earn at the end of Wonder? Ss discuss character, achievement, and represent thinking by creating a badge. #ditchbook
I agree. Some students find amazing pictures that I would never have thought of. It's perfect for students who don't feel comfortable with doodles.
#DitchBook
A2: I learn best through pictures. I also explain my thinking best through images. In my future classroom I hope to allow my students to do the same because it is hard to be out thoughts into words at times. #DitchBook
Just had a thought to start sketchnoting again after learning from @HeckAwesome at @iste except this time sketch note the podcasts I’m listening to! #goals#ditchbook
#DitchBook A2g I had a project a while back involving training for making appointments for hospital visits. Making the process visible via a simulation did at least two things. They practice how to use it and observed where fixes were needed. It got learners observing, tearing.
A3: I love to offer choice to students on how to show their thinking. Some like to draw, build, write....I try to incorporate those 3 options. #DitchBook
A3: Reminding students that being a good "doodler" doesn't make the learning better. Sometimes icons and stock images work just as well. It's about linking an image or experience with the learning. #ditchbook
Our first iteration was organic, coming out of a discussion of character traits. Ss were free to be creative. When we cycled back to the opportunity later in the year the stage was set by their own efforts. #ditchbook
A3 something I would do when I was in the classroom was for students to use movement and create all kinds of maps as well as draw pictures to represent vocabulary words #ditchbook
A3: Begin with Crazy 8s to brainstorm an abstract concept. It gets them in the ballpark with quick sketches before diving in. Take next step by having them find pop culture not personal examples in YouTube. This sets the table for the lesson. #eduprotocols#ditchbook
Q3: Sometimes we all need a little help to get started or something new to keep us going. What do you do to capitalize on students’ visible thinking? What are some of your favorite tips and tools? #DitchBook#MakingThinkingVisible@DitchThatTxtbk@rlfreedm
A3: In this example students were provided images on @GoogleForEdu Slides before sketching their own image on Keep. They then dragged their keep drawing to slides, their writing was more descriptive when the image they wrote about came from their imagination. #ditchbook
A2: There are for sure core things that are used across all curriculum. For EL: its almost anything we can use to help Ss connect with the vocabulary including us acting it out. #ditchbook
#EdTech You know what? This is a great idea. At @CoachellaCUE#TechFest last Saturday streaming/recording @Gameboydrew sessions I had to take it down. I’m in the process of making snippets of it; being much shorter they’re more likely to be watched later #DitchBook
A3: I have learned that Ss enjoy collaborative sketching as much as individual sketching. We have used streams of old computer paper to create “filmstrips” as a means of story boarding and doing the thinking behind oral narratives. #DitchBook
have you used the noun project? I created some planning boards on google slides after hearing about them on a @DitchThatTxtbk and @ShakeUpLearning podcast #ditchbook

I had Ss today using voice memos to hear how they would sound for their podcast. Loved that they were using metacognition about a written segment that started with a sketchnote #ditchbook
I’ve been listening during my weekend mornings and snow days and it would be awesome to keep notes and a tranquil way to start my day #ditchbook#teacherlife
A3b: My next pet project is a collaborative slides activity where kids add PNG of self from https://t.co/yYsUIQZ3CR and speech bubble to "say"" something to totalitarian dictators of 20th century. #ditchbook
We did comic strips to show the important ideas we were reading about in Restart this week. Was fascinating listening to the Ss make choices about what to include or not include in their visual #ditchbook
A2.2: In CS, we can easily get lost in the monotony that can be programming and coding. A lot of modeling happens but that also doesn't cut it. Ss go analog and draw their code out on the whiteboard. #ditchbook
A3: Google... Adobe Spark... New programs appear all the time and it's fun to let kids practice with them. This week, I found a new creative software. One of my students went home and learned it, knew more than me the next day, so he helped teach the class!! #ditchbook
Q3: Sometimes we all need a little help to get started or something new to keep us going. What do you do to capitalize on students’ visible thinking? What are some of your favorite tips and tools? #DitchBook#MakingThinkingVisible@DitchThatTxtbk@rlfreedm
an icon library. I'll pre-choose some icons for the planning spaces to help with some of my students who would spend most of their work time trying to find the "right" image. https://t.co/tYcDkCspn0#ditchbook

A3: I was recently introduced to Popplet. It is a great online graphic organizer to explore and map out ideas. Allows for color coding, adding drawings, and images. Awesome tool! #ditchbook
A4: Ss need to just try. When Ss SEE their thinking and the thinking of others, rich discussions occur & deeper understanding is a wonderful side-effect. All Ss like to talk about themselves - sharing becomes contagious! #MakingThinkingVisible#DitchBook@DitchThatTxtbk@rlfreedm
A4. I think modeling it and giving them opportunities to try it across the content area. I even saw it being used for Cornell notes! Teaching Ss about banners, arrows, and an icon library are also helpful! @sylviaduckworth skyped with Ss, making it seem so authentic! #ditchbook
A3: I love any tools that Ss can use where their creativity soars. I've gotten to like @canva quite a bit as of late for graphic creation esp for social media posts. #ditchbook
In reply to
@zonie71, @DitchThatTxtbk, @rlfreedm, @canva
A4: While programming #python Ss get the opportunity to connect to math on a daily basis. Programming helps them to see how math has an application outside of their math class. #ditchbook
A3: LATE but HERE! Love #Sketchnotes & #SketchnotesGO (graphic organizers) to help Ss think visibly. Also love using @PearDeck & @nearpod for watching responses in real time, discussing them. Love the drawing tools too that let them add visuals to their answers. #DitchBook
A4: This is the topic of next week's blog post, to be posted on https://t.co/Qgwahgwth4 Thursday morning. For now, check out several examples of interdisciplinary learning in the inaugural, newly adopted California Computer Science standards. https://t.co/pA71TkR9x9#ditchbook
A4: As a jumping off point for sketchnotes, my Hashtagged Learning protocol helps kids make content to real life connections. Their hashtags become fodder for them to develop sketchnotes. #ditchbook
A4: With math, students need to have visual representations of the problem. It helps them explain their thinking and work through unknowns. I love when a students say they know the answer isn't right because it doesn't "look" right based on the image.
#DitchBook
A2: I hope to have my students draw a preview of what our topic of the week would look like in their minds. I will then implement their images in my lesson plans throughout the week. #Ditchbook
Using student-generated concept maps can be a powerful way for students to show their thinking + their ability to make imaginative connections + disconnections among ideas, concepts + themes in class. They also get to curate based on what they found important. #DitchBook
#DitchBook A3a Okay, this isn’t as easy as it used to be when my daughters were little, but when I’m with my 2 yo granddaughter Lily getting down to her level (usually on the floor) or running around like crazy out back helps me see what she is watching/doing from her perspective
A3: I hope to have my students express what they perceive our topic of the week to be. I will then implement their images in my lesson plans throughout the week. #DitchBook
Thank you for joining us tonight! Don’t forget to continue building your PLN by following other ditchers! However, you may want to stick around for another half hour of BONUS Questions - we have 2 really good ones!! #DitchBook#MakingThinkingVisible@DitchThatTxtbk@rlfreedm
