#LearnLAP occurs on Mondays starting at 7pm Central Time. Guest moderators and participants discuss topics from author Paul Solarz's book Learn Like a PIRATE.
Welcome to #LearnLAP. The one and only @DynamicDuda338 and I will be moderating tonight. We will use the Q1/A1 format. Please introduce yourself, tell us what you do and tell us where you are from.
Hi #LearnLAP I'm Tiffany a K-5 special education teacher during the school year and currently a first grade summer school teacher. I'm from Michigan, but live in Virginia.
Q1: In Learn Like a Pirate @PaulSolarz talks about increasing opportunities for collaborative responsibility (We as teachers need to identify tasks and give students time to complete the tasks) How do you increase opportunities for student leadership in your classroom? #LearnLAP
A1 As a Principal I empower my teachers to do great things. I believe (till proven otherwise) they are all in it for the right reasons. In the same way I hope my teachers give their students opportunities to grow and become responsible citizens. #LearnLAP
#learnlap I give my Ss choices in as many things as are practical. Long term things like seating, and short term things like choices in lessons, groupings, and work product.
A1 #Learnlap Let students lead the discussion- remediation & enrichment circles. Allow students to help design lessons & create cool labs & toss put those cookie-cutter activities- let them be owners of their own learning
A1 I definitely love the opportunities he gives to his students. They do collaborative work and have roles that they are responsible, I also do class meetings that I let them handle and just go along for the ride. #LearnLAP
A1. I really try to be a "band coach". I give them what they need and then watch them work. This works well in small group activities. If you let them the kids will always surprise you. #LearnLAP
A1- Last year, I began to have students take active roles in keeping our classroom rolling! By year end, they could take over and let me sleep! This coming year, I hope to have students from diff GL help lead in EdTech! #learnlap
A1: I teach computer science. For projects, we have a help ticket system, and students are empowered to coach their peers to solve their help tickets. One rule: coaches can't touch the mouse. #LearnLAP
A1: it’s important to find ways to empower students from the beginning of the school year. Establish routines from day 1, offer choice from Day 1, take time to teach routines from day 1. #learnlap
I'm Paul Solarz, a 5th grade teacher (soon-to-be 4th grade teacher) from Arlington Heights, Illinois, and author of "Learn Like a PIRATE!" #LearnLAP
Thanks SO MUCH to @Principal_H & @DynamicDuda338 for moderating this evening!!!
A1 #Learnlap Self-advocacy and self-reliance comes from opportunities to chose their demonstration of knowledge- let them choose: podcasts, cartoons, skits - collaborative or independent options- let them lead by letting them have a voice & choice
A1. By allowing more voice and choice, we can work with Ss interests and bring them into the classroom into real life problem based situations for them to solve and utilize in learning. #learnlap
A1b. In my non-band classes I really try to let the kids pick the topic. By doing this they become the teacher and I become the student. When they lead they take ownership. #LearnLAP
A1 I often feel Ss know more than we do when it comes to certain things. I feel they are very intuitive and sent with one another so let them lead! Let them "show what they know!" They Excel when they explain when they repeat and tell it it's burned on their brain! #learnlap
A1 As a Principal I empower my teachers to do great things. I believe (till proven otherwise) they are all in it for the right reasons. In the same way I hope my teachers give their students opportunities to grow and become responsible citizens. #LearnLAP
A1: Provide Ss with opportunities to step up and take the lead in collaborative work, morning meetings, jigsaw presentations, etc. . . knowing your students and focusing on their “glows and grows” #LearnLAP
Q1: In Learn Like a Pirate @PaulSolarz talks about increasing opportunities for collaborative responsibility (We as teachers need to identify tasks and give students time to complete the tasks) How do you increase opportunities for student leadership in your classroom? #LearnLAP
A1. Student leadership in my classes looks different for each individual. Some students enjoy taking charge of a project, some students enjoy creating class mottos/norms, some students like to lead with helping others with tech. Find their strengths and let them fly! #LearnLAP
Q1: In Learn Like a Pirate @PaulSolarz talks about increasing opportunities for collaborative responsibility (We as teachers need to identify tasks and give students time to complete the tasks) How do you increase opportunities for student leadership in your classroom? #LearnLAP
A1: That's tough because ss are mostly in my room for testing. The biggest way I increased responsibility this year was having my 4th and 5th grade ss do ss led IEPs. It really helped them take ownership of their learning. #LearnLAP
Q1: In Learn Like a Pirate @PaulSolarz talks about increasing opportunities for collaborative responsibility (We as teachers need to identify tasks and give students time to complete the tasks) How do you increase opportunities for student leadership in your classroom? #LearnLAP

A2: For me, it is about being on fire for my subject matter and knowing that I will go NUTS unless I can tell people about it, especially young people...b/c that is when I fell in love with it! #learnlap
A2: At the end of the day I just want to help people. As a Principal I believe it's your job to give teachers (and staff) the tools to do their job. I believe you need to inspire and get out of their way. I trust my staff and support them in their mission. #LearnLAP
A2: My students will always be the driving force behind my career. Everything I do, I want it to benefit the kids.
My professional passion is helping students find their own passions. Although I teach math and science, I want my Ss to get life skills in my class also. #LearnLAP
Q2: @BurgessDave in Teach Like Pirate, talks about “Professional Passion” (the reasons you felt called to this profession). What is it about being a teacher that drives you ? What is your Professional Passion? #LearnLAP
A1 My students had choice in where they sat daily. They were also responsible for setting and taking down our flags. I would love to incorporate more! #LearnLAP
A1 I have my students who have are more advanced in learning English mentor the students who are recent arrivals. They know what it is like and are able to guide the new students in both the class activities as well as in the school environment. #learnlap
A1 Give all Ss a chance to show leadership, sometimes it might be in a small group where they are in charge to report back the answers or materials #learnlap
A2 I remember an absolutely horrible math teacher completely extinguishing my flame & desire to learn. I swore that would never happen to Ss under my guidance. I guess I set out to make all students feel welcome and to help all students learn no matter what the barrier #learnlap

A2 my personal passion is growth as an educator. My love of learning and desire to share what I have learned is something that drives me. I love to learn and teach. #Learnlap
A1:I don’t say no so they ask, they plan, they implement. 2 girls planned a Mentos and Coke reaction all by themselves. 4 girls literally took over my class one day, with a google slides, on a ss birthday. I let them feel comfortable making decisions so they do! #learnlap
A2: I get a kick out of helping students learn ideas that most people think are pretty tough and hopefully see that physics can be found everywhere in their lives #learnlap
A2: I am passionate about giving kids authentic learning experiences. I believe that giving students the opportunity to solve real problems helps them to grow AND achieve. #LearnLAP
A1 One of the ways I increase student leadership is encouraging kids to choose their learning coach. They will ask one of their peers to assist them using sentence stems during discussions. #LearnLAP

A3 I do a weekly newsletter for my Ts to cover info they need to know (and to preserve faculty meeting time for what matters!). I include a section is where I share cool things they've done in their classes. I also look for any opporrunity to praise them publicly. #LearnLAP
Q3: In Lead with Culture, Jay Billy @JayBilly2 writes about empowering greatness in your teachers and staff. Give some examples of how you empower staff you work with (teachers, teacher assistants etc.) How do you feel this has helped build a positive culture? #LearnLAP
A6 Cultivating relationships with students and staff. Having an open door policy worked great. My students and I loved having former students pop in. #Learnlap
Q7: In Learn LAP @PaulSolarz talks about 21st Cent Skills. Traditionally teachers have focused on teaching the “facts” but many now believe we should focus on “instilling the ability to transfer learning to new situations”. How have you made the shift to this mindset? #LearnLAP
A6 I try to get buy in from my students by including them in the rules, expectations, and routines from day 1. I do let them know the non-negotiables, but with respect. I try to hard to help them feel that our class is their safe zone. #LearnLAP
A1: Consistency is key! Also providing clear expectations in adult & student language. Accepting feedback and making adjustments as needed. Showing everyone that their opinion matters and that all TRULY means all! #LearnLAP

A7: It seems that more teachers are starting to realize that teaching students to think and question is what will make them better suited to survive in the world. I think employers are also looking for people who are capable of independent thought. #LearnLAP
Q7: In Learn LAP @PaulSolarz talks about 21st Cent Skills. Traditionally teachers have focused on teaching the “facts” but many now believe we should focus on “instilling the ability to transfer learning to new situations”. How have you made the shift to this mindset? #LearnLAP
A3 Attenind EdCamps has helped me learn new ways to enhance my teaching and I always share that knowledge with co-workers. Many of the websites are now use regularly in their teaching. Also, sometimes all it takes to empower others is a few kind words to build them up! #Learnlap
Q6: In The Innovator’s Mindset , George Couros @GCouros writes about creating a shared vision. He states the vision should be compelling to students, teachers, leaders and the greater community. How have you created “buy in” to the shared vision of your school? #LearnLAP
A6 #LearnLAP Buy In will be immediate if they feel a connection- when they have the opportunity to be hands on, active learners they will engage. When they own their learning, embrace risk taking, are challenged & supported unconditionally they will buy in wholeheartedly
A6: Last year our school became a #KidsDeserveIt school. Our staff read the book together and implemented many of the strategies from the book. It became the mantra behind decision making and really helped build a common vision. #LearnLAP
Q6: In The Innovator’s Mindset , George Couros @GCouros writes about creating a shared vision. He states the vision should be compelling to students, teachers, leaders and the greater community. How have you created “buy in” to the shared vision of your school? #LearnLAP
A6: Our district adopted the initiatives to become Trauma-Informed. When @SporLin came to speak last fall, he gave a name to everything I've always believed about teaching. "You can't do the Bloom's stuff, until you've got the Maslow's stuff." #LearnLAP
A6 Constantly reminding everyone that it is about the kids. Getting folks on the same page isn't always easy but for the most part teachers want to do the right thing. A common vision that is shared by the entire school community is worth the struggles. #learnlap
A7 we are addressing g this I. Our vision, mission and core values. We have had some seriously productive discussion using this question and it is a work in progress. We must teach problem solving schools and model a culture of growth, innovation and risk #Learnlap
A7 focus on doing or creating something #mindmapping exercises help draw connections to prior knowledge group work teamwork 20% and passion projects are good ways to make connections and to extend the learning process #studentchoice often leads to deeper exploration #learnlap
A7 The kids need to know how to learn, where to find good info, how to work as part of a team, be a good person. We are working on all of these skills #learnlap
A7: Ss should be problem solvers, creators, and communicators. Discussions about growth mindset should occur........I had a student recreate this poster for me this year. #learnlap
A7: This is a work in progress. We have implemented coding and are slowly focusing more on teaching ss how to find/adapt/apply information to their needs rather than just memorizing. #LearnLAP
Q7: In Learn LAP @PaulSolarz talks about 21st Cent Skills. Traditionally teachers have focused on teaching the “facts” but many now believe we should focus on “instilling the ability to transfer learning to new situations”. How have you made the shift to this mindset? #LearnLAP
#learnlap Building a growth mindset stems from a deconstruction of content, see how all the pieces fit together- building bridges-this happens by making sure Ss have time to investigate and assimilate new information but also the time to discuss & paint the mural of knowledge

A7: I am forever giving my Ss choices in how they can show what they're learning. If they can show me, and explain how they got there, then who am I to tell them it's the right way or the wrong way? Kids learn differently. We need to embrace that! #LearnLAP
A7 As a teacher of students with moderate intellectual disabilities, I have the unique freedom to really focus on the skills my students will need in the "real world." Things we take for granted, like understanding the value of money, are so important!#LearnLAP
A7: If Ss can’t apply learning to new situations then what was the point? We don’t want Ss who can just regurgitate information short term, we want life long learners. We need to incorporate more authentic tasks & help Ss see relevancy of the information being learned. #LearnLAP
Q8: @BurgessDave states that the cornerstones of Teach Like a Pirate are "passion and enthusiasm". How do you maintain high levels of enthusiasm in the classroom? How do you recharge your batteries to keep the energy flowing? #LearnLAP

A8: Much in the same way an enthusiastic Teacher will motivate their students, an enthusiastic Principal can motivate staff. Keep the energy level high in the building so others can feed off of it. Its your job to motivate- no one was ever inspired by a paper pusher. #LearnLAP
A7 This year, we started with @ArgumentDriven in science which pushed the students to question, plan and implement experiments, collect the data, then draw a conclusion using their evidence. Then they had to explain their findings. Wow did it push them! #LearnLAP

A7: It starts with the questions we ask. If you can answer a question with a yes, no, or even a definitive, then you haven't asked a great question for transfer. Hattie talks about transfer as the deepest level of learning #learnlap
A6 This year while using #tlap in our faculty meetings, I modeled what I hoped to see the Ts trying in their classrooms. My favorites were an Escape Room activity and a Chopped challenge. As I took risks/tried new things, I observed the Ts doing the same. #LearnLAP
