#ProsperISD chat open to all in and out of district teachers discussing best practices and working with students K-12. It will occur on the second Thursday of every month at 8:00pm CST.
A1Cross curricular connections are imt because it makes the learning relevant to Ss. One of the main questions I am asked is, “Where will I use this in real life?” By making connections to other disciplines and to their real lives, it makes the content relevant. #Prosper4ward
A1: Ss need to see that learning isn't an isolated event to 1 academic area. When it is understood that learning is fluid among all content areas, critical thinking & higher order skills are evoked. It promotes greater levels of questioning & greater understanding.
#Prosper4ward
A1: Ss are able to gain a much deeper understanding of concepts & tie together connections of their understanding when they are given opportunities to experience the same concept(s) through different purposes, forms, and content areas #Prosper4ward
A1: Cross curricular connections are KEY. Students have to be able to transfer their knowledge from subject to subject and situation to situation. Also when you combine subjects, you have more time to dig deeper! #Prosper4ward
A1: It will help students make real-world connections and it will help solidify the information better. They will see how this isn't just used in math or science class, but all classes and in life! #prosper4ward
A1 Because multiple brains are better than one. The best professional learning I've been a part of for a long time was this year, and it involved administrators, librarians, and ITSs working toward common goals. #Prosper4ward
A1: The WORLD is one big huge cross curricular connection! Everything we learn, everything we know, it’s all connected. Our brains were designed to love connections. This is a great article about brain research and connections: https://t.co/FKAilCQKlq#Prosper4ward
A1 I think that when we integrate curriculum students broaden their understanding of a concept which deepens learning, the learning is relevant and they make life long connections #Prosper4ward
A1: It is important for Ss to make cross curricular connections because it enables them to apply their knowledge and skills in one subject, ex: Language Arts and understand and perform tasks in another subject area such as Social Studies
#Prosper4ward#EmpoweringThirdGraders
A1: Ss are able to make stronger connections in content areas and see things from different perspectives. It gives them an opportunity to think about topics over an extended period of time and formulate their opinions. #Prosper4ward
A1: Cross curricular connections is crucial and a game changer in our classrooms. Kids' learning is accelerated and allows real life to enter into the classroom. #prosper4ward

A1 Students must see the value in how the content they are learning can be applied and used in other classes. Real world application such as video production is a bonus for cross curricular!🙌 #prosper4ward
A1 shows Ss how the world works as an interconnected system. As helps Ss see the bigger picture, make a better connection to the content, & deepen their understanding #prosper4ward
Great point Nathan! Learning is like anything else...it takes reps. The more our Ss are able to address a concept the greater their mastery and understanding. Cross curricular opps bring in something familiar and then help them to shift or expand their thinking #Prosper4ward
Yes! Kids make videos in other classes all the time! I make videos for my life all the time! It is important that students see that. This skill isn't just for this class. #prosper4ward
A1: Life doesn’t happen in a bubble and neither should learning. Helping students see the relevance of information to their life makes that knowledge important to them. #Prosper4ward
A1- Cross-curricular connections make the learning more meaningful and can give purpose and real-life application and transferability to concepts. #Prosper4ward
I was JUST thinking this too! Like, I'm never thinking "Oh, well I am now entering into my science portion of my brain"... haha... we just THINK about what we need to THINK about. It just... happens. It just... connects. #Prosper4ward

@MichelleAskew10 is showing us how easy it is to participate...even when you are on a bus on the way back from a school trip to Austin! #tweetdeck#prosper4ward
A2: A connection my Ss made this year was in ELAR studying Jan Brett during our author study. They used Google Tour Builder to apply their geography skills in Social Studies, to create a timeline of the countries that inspired her stories.
#Prosper4ward#EmpoweringThirdGraders
A2: It is super easy to incorporate reading, writing, and math into science. I LOVE using read alouds to help deepen understanding. We also always write in our science notebooks to take note, collect data, and record learning. #Prosper4ward
A2: When using Hyperdocs & Digital Breakouts it gives you the freedom to intertwine content easily. As a classroom T, instead of spending 90 min on Math & 45 min on Science, I created cooperative groups that worked on both content areas for the full 135 min.
#Prosper4ward
A2: During our #poetry unit we introduced sensory poems. Our science lesson from BOY was a great way to review and make that connection.
#5Senses#Prosper4ward
A2: This is something @MrsHutchHistory and I tried to do with "Hamilton" last year and it was a totally failure on my end. This is something I want to work on with her next year for sure - how we can mesh history and English. #prosper4ward
A2 In math, we incorporate writing into every unit. Ss are expected to be able to explain their thinking on how & why they solved the problem they way that they did. Ss will be using expository writing throughout life, so it is important that they practice now. #Prosper4ward
A2: As is typical in an English class, we have no trouble connecting our readings to history, but this year I was able to connect the book Frankenstein to science. My students were FASCINATED by this bioethics connection: https://t.co/xCLxmD3o9e#Prosper4ward
A1: Students who can relate to the content being presented in a multi curricular application are more likely to truly connect at an intentional level of learning that applies to their own lives. #Prosper4ward
A2 When introducing persuasive media, Ss made the connection of ethos, pathos, logos from their English class in creating Super Bowl Commercials. #prosper4ward
A2: Teaching social studies is teaching nonfiction text. We have taken our writing to a new level, we have enhanced our nonfiction reading skills as well. #Prosper4ward
A1: Ss need to see that learning isn't an isolated event to 1 academic area. When it is understood that learning is fluid among all content areas, critical thinking & higher order skills are evoked. It promotes greater levels of questioning & greater understanding.
#Prosper4ward
A2: Ss used persuasive techniques in ELAR and math during their data and statistics unit. They collaborated to create visual displays that would “mislead” their audience and connected it to how advertisers do that everyday. #Prosper4ward
A2: We use math all.the.time! Whether it's analyzing data, maps, graphs, charts, creating our own data, or simply calculating distance and expenses at various locations. #prosper4ward
A2: When we teach "Night", we dive deep into the Holocaust and WW2. I know it isn't what our US History Ts teach but we do a lot of history during this unit. Also, anytime anyone does Content Area WRITING you are incorporating ELAR and thinking! #Prosper4ward#ContentAreaWriting
A2 I just send 3rd grade Ts an activity today for the end of their SS unit that can incorporate math and even extend it by writing about their choices #budgetfun#prosper4ward
a2 Science rocks unit-physical properties, math -measurement o therocks and writing an imaginative story with the rock as the main character...we started today...stay tuned #Prosper4Ward
A2: @educatorcher and I planned a fun project for our kiddos! They'll be writing legends about their rocks. We measured the length, width, and weight of our rocks and they have to incorporate the properties into their writing. BOOM math, science, and ELAR. #Prosper4ward
Exactly. Not only should they be able to arrive at the right answer, they should be able to explain it in such a way that others who never heard the content before would understand it. #Prosper4ward
A2: Recently during PLC, our team decided to promote cross curricular writing opportunities in each content area using power writes! It was exciting for the Ss to see their math and science Ts applying a writing technique they'd learned from their ELAR teachers! #Prosper4ward
Q2: History and English go together really well! I love when I can incorporate reading strategies students learn in ELAR into my class. #Prosper4ward@PISDLiT
A2: Simply listening to teachers talk in between classes is a great opportunity to share ideas with each other. Hearing what @kmhenderson is doing in her classroom sparks ideas on how I can incorporate that into our social studies class. #Prosper4ward
A2 As an ITS I worked with my 6th gr Ss and 6 sci who were discussing energy resources. Both using the terms renewable and non renewable. Ss got to see how those resources affect countries and the environment #prosper4ward
A2- We integrate all the time- read alouds in any subject, writing across the curriculum, JUSTIFY your thinking/opinion on any topic/subject. #Prosper4ward
A2: I am curious about how to better connect with other teachers/subject areas at the high school level - I hardly even know people in other departments. It's hard to "talk shop" when you never see people from other disciplines. #Prosper4ward
A2: In the past week alone I've seen poetry and science, social studies and math collaborations in financial literacy, and more. Writing and think alouds are powerful ways to weave contents together. #Prosper4ward
Making connections across content happens a lot. I try to help them realize they need these skills in many aspects - infer about people based on actions, how much does my souvenir from spring break cost, can I read the map...all of these things happen to them #Prosper4ward
A2: We have analyzed poems in our social studies class. We have dissected each stanza, each line, and then talked about the history, the story behind it. #Prosper4ward
A2: Recently during PLC, our team decided to promote cross curricular writing opportunities in each content area using power writes! It was exciting for the Ss to see their math and science Ts applying a writing technique they'd learned from their ELAR teachers! #Prosper4ward
Plan a trip to sea world, cost of trip, read the map of the park, read and learn about the animals = all subjects in the same project + life lesson! Win all around! #Prosper4ward
A2: learning how to operate the camera in manually PhotoJ uses both math and science skills to understand shutter speed and light control. We talk time, aperture/lens structure and types of light to produce a great quality photo. #Prosper4ward
A2: we are creating fantasy ecosystems to show knowledge of adaptations and food webs. Student have to prove they have a balanced ecosystem mathematically and it ends with them writing a survival story of what inherited traits and learned behaviors they needed. #prosper4ward
A3 Technology can help Ts collaborate on topics across content areas. Projects can be developed in multiple classes easily when we use tech. You can also gain ideas from your PLN using technology. There is such a wealth of knowledge that can be gained for your PLN. #Prosper4ward
A3: Google Classroom made it easy to have S created poems. My Ss have written/published their own sensory and #Texas acrostic poems. Using @googleearth or @geoguessr is a great way to have Ss use for creative writing and/or as a prompt.
#WritingAcrosstheCurriculum#Prosper4ward
A3 Technology such as Google Suite allows Ss to become explorers. One HyperDoc activity I look forward to teaching is about the effects of pollution on the world, but the end product inspire a student produce PSA. #prosper4ward
A3: Tech makes it super easy to incorporate reading and writing at the click of a button into any subject. You can have students research on PebbleGo, create google slides to teach the class, and then use @Flipgrid to share across classrooms as well! #Prosper4ward
I would definitely say that a way to get Ts into this is to have them *pair up* in a flipgrid. Even though I am totally obsessed with myself, I get a little weirded out making a video of myself talking. It might help break down that barrier. :) #Prosper4ward
In reply to
@jetteachestech, @Flipgrid, @ProsperHS
A3: With technology, you have the world at your fingertips. Having Google Suite, you are able to take this project from one class and continue building it in another, add more throughout each class. #Prosper4ward
A3: When we read "Night" and "Much Ado About Nothing" we start w research proj. They have to discover, investigate, and present on a topic (Hitler, Shakespeare, etc.). We all learn about the topics together and Ss have a better background knowledge bc of it #Prosper4ward
A3: Technology allows us to plan and make changes on the fly. We can also share student work and allow them to collaborate with each other as well. Ss see it as an ongoing process with consistent feedback. #Prosper4ward
A2 My Ss used sketch up and 3S printed props, we designed online portfolios where they created and wrote about a madeup character and world, they wrote Greek chorus pieces, they researched the historical significance of our play about the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire #prosper4ward
A3: Ss are able to access the world in a click, and collaborate across their curriculum This year Ss used their science Performance Task to collect data. They took their data and used math skills to input data Google Sheets, to share, collaborate and analyze data.
#Prosper4ward
A3: Using Google Maps Tour Builder, Ss are able to create a tour of landforms created by W.E.D. and then identify elements of geometry along their tour on the map #Prosper4ward
A3- I LOVE that our district is 1:1 in second grade. We use technology daily to streamline. Hyperdocs, app smashing, @Flipgrid to explain our thinking, @Seesaw for both activities and to bridge the school/home connection. #Prosper4ward
A3: Technology allows us to plan and make changes on the fly. We can also share student work and allow them to collaborate with each other as well. Ss see it as an ongoing process with consistent feedback. #Prosper4ward
So true. Kids love it and Ts dread it. We need to step out of our comfort zones and interact with our Ss they way they engage in learning. #prosper4ward
In reply to
@JanuaryRowe, @jetteachestech, @Flipgrid, @ProsperHS
Technology gives Ts and the Ss the opportunity to explore and have more cross curricular connections because it can be used to redefine the boundaries of the classroom. We are not limited to one outcome with technology but open up new medium to express Ss knowledge .#prosper4ward
A3: I am a NUT for technology! ♥️ ANY opportunity to integrate IT builds a bridge from our classrooms into a vast and endless resource bank of knowledge! This opportunity opens the potential for cross curricular applications within our lesson planning. #Prosper4ward
It's a crazy article! I have found that the @nytimes has been AWESOME for cross curricular connections. Great lessons prepped for a lot of topics! #Prosper4ward
A3: Not afraid to say I (as a teacher) do not have all the answers. Technology helps Ss find the answers. I love that Google Sites now has the ability for Ss to collaborate from anywhere and build portfolios to enhance their learning. #Prosper4ward
Collaboration using simple, free apps like the Google Suite or Trello allows working with other classrooms without scheduling conflicts, let alone branching into other schools! #prosper4ward
Q4 Share your grade level and subject area along with a topic you will be teaching soon and would like to team up with someone else to add a cross curricular connection! #Prosper4ward
A4: In 12th Grade English IV, we are still reading 1984 by Orwell until the end of April and are about to get into the brainwashing and mind control portion - I think a Psychology connection would be awesome here! #Prosper4ward
