Let’s get started. Tonight’s topic is Self Care for Educators.
Q1 Parker Palmer says,”Self-care is never a selfish act;it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have.” What do you think?
Thanks Kathy! Just dipping in to in the background. Timetable looks like I'll be able to join you more this term :)
2-4 lit coach in Iowa. First time I've made it here in weeks. : hosted a family lit night last night!
Perfect! And I need to get back to . :) Hope that is going well!
A1 If you don't take care of yourself, who will? It's not selfish, it's necessary. https://t.co/uQ1bQAvFWU
Q1 Parker Palmer says,”Self-care is never a selfish act;it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have.” What do you think?
We are just starting systemically-we have to encourage revisiting and deeper analyses. https://t.co/naZDgo3qxz
data walls provide such a powerful visual!
a1 so true! You must take care of yourself in order to be healthy and help others
recorded, watched separately, then came back together to discuss and set goal. I also recorded our convo for my growth
A1: I love Parker Palmer's work. I believe he is absolutely right. We must be in a good frame of mind to offer anything to others.
A1 We need to take care of ourselves first so we can help others. :)
A1 I think I need to make time to do it more It's important to clear the mind and rejuvinate
A1 This is true, but hard to do when you are a true servant...learning it's best to refuel and give BEST me to others
You need to put your oxygen mask on in a plance before you can help others. Same is true in our schools.
There's a reason the airline tells you to gain oxygen first before helping others https://t.co/XhRpP1Zl3D
Q1 Parker Palmer says,”Self-care is never a selfish act;it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have.” What do you think?
A1: Palmer Connecting self-care to stewardship is a powerful notion for me;raises it to a core value; not merely necessary; sacred
A1: so true and good reminder that everything is a balance. It's ok to rest in order to refocus/recharge. Will make us stronger
A1: Taking time for personal growth, reflection, and well-being is a must. First self, then able to do more for others.
A1 - Reminds me of "sharpen the ax" or "put on your oxygen mask first." Can't help others if not sharp or can't breathe!
A1: you have to take care of yourself. The Ss will thank you for it if you take care of yourself. It's necessary, not selfish.
Q2: What does self-care mean to you?
Hello leaders! Greg- 2nd grade, MD. Checking out for first time! Pursuing becoming literacy coach in future. Ready to grow!
Briana Reading Coach from SC checking in late
I pray 4 humility, effectiveness, patience. Ss 2 B receptive, calm, behaved. <3 Psalm 23 <3 gospels
Welcome Greg! So glad you could join
So glad you could join us. We chat each Wed. at 9pm CST. You'll gain a great PLN here!
A2: Self-care is multi-faceted: physical, emotional, spiritual
A1: Yes. If I am not in the right frame of mind I am of no use to anyone
A2 unplugging to refuel & recharge...connecting with things that make me happy & allow for self reflection & rejuvenation
a2 self care means focuses on me
A1- When you are willing and able to take care of yourself, then you are more willing and able to support others!
A2 Finding time for yourself mentally, physically, and emotionally. https://t.co/WRtgsr9g0g
Q2: What does self-care mean to you?
A2: self care= mental, physical and emotional stability are prioritized over job duties
A2: Of late, it's meant exercise/yoga. Talking to colleagues/students who energize me during day. Mindfulness practice.
A2 - Emotional Well-being, Spiritual Well-being, and Relationship growth
Glad to be here! Thanks for the welcome!
A2: Self-care (IMO) means being well balanced and finding time to take care of that balance.
Truth. We can only give as good as we feel. We can do more when well-rested, fed, slept, and exercised. https://t.co/QtZeD6o9p2
Q1 Parker Palmer says,”Self-care is never a selfish act;it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have.” What do you think?
Glad to be here! Thanks for the welcome. Looking forward to collaborating!
A2: Time for me to do the things that make me feel like me: reading, exercise, sitting down....real life
A2 time...time 2 stop & listen, time with family, time 2 read, time 2 sit & be still, time 2 reflect, time away
Lurking in late. Tyler, educoach from KC metro.
A1 Self-care is a focus on becoming the best person I can be - mentally, emotionally, spiritually, physically.
I agree that balance is a key word when thinking of self-care.
A2: to me it means staying healthy, active, and stress free. Means I take care of my needs above all.
A2: making sure to take time for reflection/refocus; even as a passionate leaner, it's saying sometimes you have to step away
A2: prayer, meditation, nutrition, exercise time w/family&friends&my dogs, time alone, walking, reading, writing, water&red wine
A2: Chipotle and ESPN. Does that count?
A2- Self-care is making time to support yourself, from finding "me time" to getting rest, exercise, having fun.
No wonder we are a great pair! https://t.co/DEQfRgiYEC
A2: prayer, meditation, nutrition, exercise time w/family&friends&my dogs, time alone, walking, reading, writing, water&red wine
A2: self care to me is making time to reflect-I rest easy if I make time to process interactions & create from events of the day
A2: Doing whatever it is that gives you the energy to do things well. Eat healthy, sleep, exercise, laugh. https://t.co/VAkgOzyqeT
Q2: What does self-care mean to you?
Of course. - especially if my Iowa State Cyclones are on ESPN! https://t.co/TAKDNQOH0O
A2: Chipotle and ESPN. Does that count?
A2: exercise, pleasure reading, time with family and friends. Sunday afternoon naps!
Prayer & red wine make most things better for me:)
A2: This is difficult for me to do, but, sometimes, self-care is saying, "I can't do that right now, but I will get back to you."
Q3: What can make self-care challenging?
A2: Also it means self-reflection, quiet time, and thankfulness
All great ways to care for self. That prayer time really focuses us on the call and away from the busy-ness.
A3: Fear of disappointing and being seen as incapable, genuinely wanting to help everyone, inability to prioritize
A3: TIME is my biggest barrier in self-care personally and professionally. Wish there were a few more of me sometimes.
A2 "If knowledge is power, self knowledge is a game changer..."
a3 The needs of others and not being able to say no because want them to be successful
A3 our favorite 4 letter word... T-I-M-E.
A3: the guilt of putting yourself first over those you serve
Thankfulness is very important! Great mindset to have. Allows to focus on life's positives, and less on negatives.
A3: Our desire to care for others; putting others before ourselves and feeling good about that
A3 Time. Time. Time is not always on my side. Everyone needs something now, and I don't want to let anyone down.
but sometimes you will earn more respect by not being afraid to say not right now...prioritize your "yes" :)
A3-2: and for me personally I want to be the best at everything I do and sometimes that makes me have to give 110%
A3b: wanting to put the needs of others first, like any good teacher would.
A3 being wrapped up in daily demands, time, winter, shorter days
A3- Getting stuck in the schedule rut. Constantly being on-the-go with tons to do all the time. Being "too busy".
A3: Self-imposed pressure. Guilt for not returning that email quickly, stretching yourself too thin, never saying "no".
Q3 Time, never enough and always goes so fast - those who give the most have the least to give
Gratitude definitely important part of self-care for me
A3: Pride can be a major roadblock. Fear of disappointing others. Time. Being pulled in so many directions.
A3: As just said, busy-ness distracts from self-care. Also not realizing its importance.
A3-3: But after facing a major illness with my child, that has been a reality check. I've learned not to take it personally
A3: external noise or distractions, self care can end up secondary rather than a priority
What a smart insight; paradoxically, we need to be humble to really embrace self-care
A3 Heroism, perfectionism & not listening to your own little coach on your shoulder all impact self-care.
A3: over committing yourself; not saying no enough to ensure you have time for self-care; not valuing your own needs as priority
A3 Time is a challenge factor. When I start saying that to myself I remind myself everyone has the same 24 hrs in a day.
A3: Often a pressure on teacher-leaders to "have it all together." So, saying, "I'm not ready to do that" seems like failure.
A3: My sense of work urgency overwhelms any self-care needs sometimes. Must. Do. All. Things. https://t.co/HIvLx38e1b
Q3: What can make self-care challenging?
Yes easy to do. That's why I limit how many teachers I take on to coach in cycles so can give my full attention to Ts
The power of punctuation drives home your point so well! So easy to get caught up in the "stuff" that needs done.
A3 When self-care seems like an impossible task (ie losing weight) I work to break it in smaller chunks.
However, many people have very different challenges within that same 24 hours.
A3: Sometimes systems make it hard for self-care. We're not always in charge of time. The teams, demands, and tasks are factors.
that's great to recognize your own threshold so you don't feel overbooked.
Q4: How can we make self-care a priority?
Saturating your soul with God's love births a special compassion for the toughest S. https://t.co/M5njhAoYuY inspires me.
Valid point. Sometimes you have to make time. For me, sometimes a moment of fresh air outside can be refreshing.
ugh, agreed-guilt is the exact word, but we shouldn't feel guilty...but we do ;)
A4: scheduling YOU time daily. Being up front with this strategy and having others hold you accountable for you time
A3 Self-care has to be a priority, if not spiral affect "If something is important, we find a way-if not we make excuses"
A4: Recognizing limits and making yourself step away. It's ok to say "I'll get back to you."
A4 Put it in my calendar! It is pops up as a notification I have to do it!
Q4 Schedule it into your day, just like you would an important mtg or evaluation
A4: Ironically (perhaps) I "schedule" it. So, my calendar might say "Sit down and read" from 1:00-1:30. Something like that.
Great point! Sometimes, we have to learn to say "no" to some things. "No" isn't a bad word. :-)
A4: understanding what your limits are. Don't stretch yourself too thin. Find what works but still make time for disconnect.
A4 Self-care needs to go in our planner just like any of our other tasks.
A4: I've been practicing mindfulness; noticing emotions; figuring out what care I need
And "no" doesn't have to be final. It can be later if it is truly a need
A4 found I had 2 schedule time on my cal 2 get caught up on office stuff, probably should schedule personal time.
A4:I have no clue! It's definitely on my list but I've so many things I do first. I'm aware tho. Some days I do others not so much
A4 Also, cut off the phone when I get home
I set daily alarms on phone to remind me to breathe & pray. Others are just inspiring words. https://t.co/cnSlPhzfS2
Q4: How can we make self-care a priority?
I find keeping my Saturday free of any schedule is so rewarding. It's one day where I have no commitments. Sweet!
A4 Also, cut off the phone when I get home
A4 Also, cut off the phone when I get home
A4: In your schedule; make it a habit. Double benefit-reflection during walk or run at least 2 miles a day https://t.co/47BZb2qnAP
Q4: How can we make self-care a priority?
A4: blocking it out in your calendar/day and valuing it as high as a standing appt/commitment to those we serve.
A free day? What is that?
That professional guilt is a real issue - especially when we set unrealistic expectations for our [human] selves
A4 Schedule & prioritize your day before heading to bed...separate personal time from work time...must have time for both
I don't have kids of my own, so I understand that allows for more flexibility. :-)
Q5: What are ways of helping those we coach to embrace self-care?
Scheduling me time works great at work. But once I get home, no chance. Kids are demanding.
A4!: schedule appears to be the solution to ensure self care
Great idea! I am going to try this. Seems simple.
A5: holding them accountable for putting it down and stepping away. Sometimes relieving some of the load
This is so important. Make the distinction between work and home, and give valuable time for both. . Balance!
I schedule as online PD (in free period or lunchtime) whenever I can - it's some "me" time + PD
I agree! Ts/Ss/Ps need us...but so do those at home.
A5 We need to make sure we honor teacher's time, too, so they have time for self-care!
A5: I have asked the new teachers I work with what they have done for themselves lately. Talk about the importance.
A5 Encourage time for self-reflection/meditation... be a lead learner/example...
ha, agreed-I have four kiddos myself, so admittedly I need to work on self-care more at home ;)easier said than done
A5: model it yourself. Teach practical tips for implementation. Self care may seem easy and obvious but it isn't
A5: Making it a normal part of conversation. Colleague coach does this well, learning from her. https://t.co/UsjQCqPsNa
Q5: What are ways of helping those we coach to embrace self-care?
A5: May be as simple as giving them "permission" to care for themselves. Raising awareness is also key.
I agree; it's been harder for me than scheduling; have had to figure out what self-care I actually need
Have 2 cut out to get my full 8! Rest well colleagues!
Q5 recognize the need for occasional flexibility - leaving a few min early for appoint., child has a temp. Life happens
I suppose it is but the "system" can generate a sense of prof guilt.
I like that you mentioned raising awareness. Great Point.
Late but A1 I fuel myself when surrounded by like-minded Ts like
Good self-care:) Glad you could make it for awhile
Yes and when you recognize that it strengthens the relationship and trust
So critical! When you can find that balance, it makes the work easier. Not less work by any means, but easier.
A5: I'd love to hear ideas about this one. I wonder if modeling "self care" might be useful.
YES, New teachers burn out so quickly because they don't take time for them. I think we all do.
That's inspiring professional self-care
A5: awareness is first step; supporting efficiency as well as effectiveness will help coachees remove barriers to self care
A5: helping them see the attention to self-care= more productive output. Not being afraid to show you are human just like them.
Daily?!?!?! I need to do this.
Flexibility is vital! Curveballs happen, & we have to be willing to adjust. Take things one step at a time w/ a smile.
A5: Model balance, share strategies that have worked for you. I'm a fan of timers esp with new Ts. Breaks things down: (1/2)
Essential practices for me, too!
A5 Perhaps helping to organize some self-care activities. After-school exercise groups, energizing learning, FUN, etc...
Yes! And can build a community of support as well.
A1 fuel = surrounded by like-minded Ts
folks, it occurs to me that I've been at my computer a lot today, so I'm going to go read a novel. Peace. Good night.
A5: I'm going to email for 20 min, then "organize" for 15 min, get prepped for tmrow for 30 min, leave by 6PM at latest, etc (2/2)
Q6: What are ways of helping our students to embrace self-care?
My best friend is a doctor; struggles w/ time for "me time" & doesn't want to "burn out". Definitely a process.
life happens is such a good reminder for both ourselves and the Ts we work with. Sometimes it's out of our control
Oooh, love it! Excellent Enjoy!
A6: recognizing and naming emotions and then talking about how to deal with it for those that struggle
Going to get self time!! You learned something tonight. Lol!
I ask my Ts all the time is this in your bubble or outside your bubble?
Good night! Way to take care of yourself 1st! https://t.co/qe1u64Ktx5
folks, it occurs to me that I've been at my computer a lot today, so I'm going to go read a novel. Peace. Good night.
A6: awareness- knowing stressor triggers + self advocacy
A5 Modeling time management and self care for them. https://t.co/txapnpoIoR
Q5: What are ways of helping those we coach to embrace self-care?
A5 When coaches ask "is that realistic?" & help coachee to plan manageable next steps we can be protecting them from themselves!
A6: Show Ss they are worthy of self-care. Respect them & teach to respect themselves. They need to know they are worthy of care
Coping mechanisms- important learning for Ss, and Ts as well. All a part of growing process.
I'm working on recognizing & naming emotions, beyond happiness, embracing the range of emotions
Q5 encourage movement! We have Workout Wednesday! Staff & students wear comfy clothes and we encourage brain breaks & recess time
Circle of Concern and I often quote the serenity prayer. What can you change?
A6 Providing time for Ss to take care of their needs during the day....helping them with time management.
going to bed! Enjoyed my first chat. Thanks!! Will shoot for next week too!
going to bed! Enjoyed my first chat. Thanks!! Will shoot for next week too!
When you figure it out let me know!! :)
A6: THIS! https://t.co/zMxkKNQAMZ
A6: Show Ss they are worthy of self-care. Respect them & teach to respect themselves. They need to know they are worthy of care
A6: capitalize on their "geniuses" outside of the classroom and valuing importance. Making time for some down time during day too
A6 I've heard of more and more teachers helping students with mindfulness!
A6 Sounds cliche, but must be modeled/develop strong relationships... if it is important to us, it will show
Thoroughly enjoying this engaging conversation on self-care this evening! Keep it going! Important dialogue.
A5: remind them why they need to take care of themselves. Be supportive and encouraging as to why they need it.
A5: Saying no to people when I must and explaining why before helping them determine if they have capacity for something.
I think we have to model/talk some through that process because it is not natural to them
great way of looking at it! Even like a must-do and may-do
A5: Get the sugary snacks, leftover cafeteria food and other junk food out of the teachers' lounge!
I am collaborating w/ guidance counselor at school on teacher PD on mindset. Seeing success w/ my Ss in this area.
I've used coaching forms to keep me focused! If not, it's a hot mess.
I've begun with noticing physical sensations of emotion;results - sadness/anxiety less unnerving than they had been
A6: Also model self care. Sometimes see Ts using negative self-talk. Makes me cringe. Fake confidence for them if you have to!
Speaking of self-care! https://t.co/ssAm4o8Nlm
A5: Get the sugary snacks, leftover cafeteria food and other junk food out of the teachers' lounge!
A6: remind them to get a good nights sleep and eat breakfast. Encourage them to disconnect and focus on themselves
A6: Examining the ways we respond as adults to intense student emotions and making changes when necessary.
Growth Mindsets in the Classroom has been a huge help!
trying to focus on self-care for myself since daughter is off treatment. Not easy and some emotions are stronger
A6: Be open with students about when we didn't respond in the best way to a student or peer.
Wish I could stay but it is late on the East Coast. Gotta take care of me and get some sleep. See ya next time TY
So important to be encouraging! The journey isn't always easy, but it's so worth it! Tough moment, but gets better.
Great point! https://t.co/5aWNOwz6ux
A6: Examining the ways we respond as adults to intense student emotions and making changes when necessary.
So important; how often have we told kids not to cry; or similar statements
A6: Let students know when we're displaying unhealthy habits that sometimes it's ok to show faults.
Disconnect is key. They live in a constant state of having to be entertained.
I used to ask my students about breakfast almost daily. And they'd try to predict what I'd eat on a given day lol.
A6: I should ask our health Ts, school nurse, and local doctors to present to Ss at library lunch sessions about healthy choices
Also, TONS of apologizing! Being honest, but positive can replace guilt over imperfection.
Q7: What commitments to self-care have you or would you like to make to yourself?
Don't we all? Especially at that age. https://t.co/HBRBko2XUz
Disconnect is key. They live in a constant state of having to be entertained.
Yes as I sit here with my 3 devices. :)
Thanks! I will definitely have to check this out!
A6: Have open conversations about how cultural differences may factor into different forms of self care.
Has anyone tried the Adult Coloring books? I'm finding coloring relaxing!
Another resource to check out! Thanks!
A5: What if we encouraged each other to drink water, walk/ run, eat right... support goes a long way in helping make a difference
. lol I'm tempted to pull my phone from my pocket when I feel it buzzing even though I know it's probably twitter
Mindsets in the Classroom: Building a Culture of Success and Student Achievement in Schools https://t.co/0M4pGA3Phy
It's not for me. Being a perfectionist adds more stress. lol.
A7: make a list of my top self care needs and then put them in my calendar
A7: I need to be more mindful of self-care at home even with a busy family life. Currently training to run 1/2 marathon in spring
A7 Daily exercise... currently hit and a LOT of misses :(
But it might not be... :) I go into panic if my phone goes missing.
I bought the rap coloring book. So much fun! https://t.co/kE8NgALqNT
Has anyone tried the Adult Coloring books? I'm finding coloring relaxing!
I have one sitting on my desk at school as we speak! I make copies for Ts who seem like they could use some calming.
A7 Daily exercise is one area I'm focusing on. Joined a gym and also have enough things at home for busy days, like today!
fortunately I don't actually like typing on my phone so I can resist. I mainyly answer texts via computer
A7: I want to disconnect more from work. I want to eat healthy and exercise more! I've been thinking about a fitness blog for Ts.
Seeking and offering forgiveness. When you forgive, you are freeing yourself as much as other person.
A7 I was doing a better job of giving myself an extra hour for spiritual growth each morning before work...prayer...journaling
A7: I reflect at least 30 minutes every day while walking or running-fitness for mind and body; a habit of self care
A7: I've started running again and allow myself a cup of tea and netflix before bed each night
A7 + 1 Going to get my hour back for my own spiritual and physical health ASAP....so needed
Yes! I meant, Ts often over-apologize for things that are imperfect.
This chat is just what I needed. Perfrect timing!
A7: I need to set time limits on school work, focus on myself. Make sure I stay healthy, workout, and be active.
Cool idea! I recently joined a gym, but I have to make time daily to be present and active there.
I need to do this too. Thank you for sharing this!
Beautiful! Journaling has made a big difference in my life; love starting the day w/
prayer,meditative walk&journaling
A7 Know my limits, be willing to say "I can't do that today," and leave room for the people I manage to do the same.
Good point! Do the best you can, and move forward. The classroom is always "under construction".
so hard to find that balance sometimes, especially when we love what we do so much! Have to instill it within ourselves.
A7: I record goals in my and check off accomplishments. It's the BEST! 📖🖊
This chat is just what I needed. Perfect timing!
Check out the healthy life-style blog a friend and I started. Need to blog more! https://t.co/fwKCwflFVV https://t.co/XMYaBpf3VO
A7: I want to disconnect more from work. I want to eat healthy and exercise more! I've been thinking about a fitness blog for Ts.
I've found blogging helps me share best practices- it might also help me stay on track for fitness!
Q8: How has self-care helped you to grow?
A7: I'm trying to blog more regularly in an attempt to be more mindful.
All this self-care talk reminds me that I need to get ready for bed. Good night, folks. Dream big and take care.
The later is so very important...really working to do that more this year. Great point! See them as humans too.
Checking out, . Thanks, as always, for an informed chat. Be sure to follow a new friend and grow that PLN. Night, y'all!
Thank you! I will look at this, Kathy! Awesome!
A8: I feel more in control of myself and the things I have taken on.
I need to order one!!! The free online printable is AWESOMEsauce!
That's great! Sharing your story, and holding yourself accountable.
Have a great night! So gland you could join us.
A8: by setting limits I am able to time manage, and have a healthy, balanced life. I am not stressed and love life.
A8: Maslow's hierarchy suggests physical needs met before we can grow in mental, emotional ways.
A8: self care has helped me grow by being my best for others more often
A8: I'm able to better prioritize; I've grown in self-awareness of being cognizant of my needs in order to best move forward
A8 Gives me quiet time to reflect & refocus in all areas of my life.
Do you know how a Passion Planner differs from a Bullet Journal?
A8: Self-care grounds me; helps me be more thoughtful, understand myself & act in ways truer to myself
Hey everyone, I've thoroughly enjoyed the conversation tonight! Time well spent. Got to run. Have a great week on purpose!
Q9: What take-aways do you bring with you from tonight’s chat?
A8: self care allows me to stay positive in the face of adversity and meet complex challenges with a fresh mind &spring in my step
It just provides a place to reflect each month and includes quotes, lists, questions, etc.
A7 Unless there is an emergency, let quitting time be quitting time for your team. Extra hours/extra work is not sustainable.
A8 When I do exercise on a consistent basis/my perspective is improved/better attitude, etc.
A8 Allows me time to reevaluate my goals and analyze where I am in the process to attaining them.
I'll have to check it out. Have been designing my own Enjoying it!
I'll have to check it out. Have been designing my own Enjoying it!
I have a separate book that I use as a bullet journal.
A9 Self-care is a must in order for me to do my best and truly make the impact on others that I desire/Thanks for the inspiration!
A9: Wondering about ways to get to know each other beyond our perspectives on coaching; build relationships more personally
A9: Self care takes time and attention-we must be determined to make it happen!
Q10: What future topics would you like to discuss here at ?
Sounds like something I may have to try!
A9 There are many elements to consider for self care. If we don't care for ourselves, who will? Start now! Be mindful!
