#K12ArtChat hi everyone, I am a school leader from New Zealand I am an art grad turned programming and design teacher. I am also a failed English student but published author š
Trevor. Art educator and author. Dropping in to say hello to the best art educators chat in the world. Literally. Probably wonāt make the whole chat but looking forward to exploring and learning with you all. Happy Valentineās Day! #k12ArtChat
A1: It's such a challenge we grow but there is this push pull between art and design - art lives in fine arts and design lives in career tech ed and has more federal funding #K12ArtChat
A1 In some ways itās growing because arts education is being seen as a way to foster student voice, communication, creativity, & expanding possibility. But itās shrinking in some ways because itās seen as ONLY fine arts. Find arts are important but engage only a few #k12ArtChat
A1 cont- in general I feel like our admin and school board really understand that Ss need to embrace creativity to be career ready post high school which helps the program #K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat a1: I have just lead my school through the process of levelling the importance of all subject areas so that art and dance have equal status against English and maths. We are removing individual subject lessons in integrating all into projects
I love this!! Often times the arts are seen as extra or "not" academic which is so difficult for students and teachers that dedicate their lives to the arts #K12ArtChat
#k12artchat A1-It is growing by leaps and bounds with what Iām teaching, sharing, and learning at @CHADphila with partners like @structur3Dprint and @ecovative and others pushing the envelope.
A1 For arts ed. to flourish, has to be seen as s means to communicate/present ideas, share individual voice, expand possibility, a means to explore possibility. It needs to roam the edges of the unknown. Thatās creativity. Cannot be only seen as making pretty pictures #k12ArtChat
A2: we must teach our community - share the learning - when we display the art we also need to display the process, the standards - the learning #K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat A2 I promote and support Design Thinking. I want my students to create original ideas, push, grow, and persist. Thatās life skills. Ultimately we are developing people for success in life.
A2 we always have to self promote thru sharing with parents, admin, community and continuing to education on the importance of the create voice #K12ArtChat
A2 I promote the importance of arts education by showing that arts is academic and that it is essential in effectively sharing ideas as well as a means to help all learners find their academic voice. #k12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat a2: it is really good to get business people in like bank managers to discuss the importance they now place on creative thinking. Completely different perspectives to challenge the communities assumptions about art being disconnected from other fields
#K12ArtChat A3 we are all impacted by how of school defines it as STEM or STEAM. Itās a big difference and it needs to be STEAM but often it isnāt.
#k12artchat The issue of equal importance among subject areas was something I talked about in my field placement today. Who says disciplines can't interact with overlap? #relevant#integration
#K12ArtChat a1: I have just lead my school through the process of levelling the importance of all subject areas so that art and dance have equal status against English and maths. We are removing individual subject lessons in integrating all into projects
#k12ArtChat A3-Good and bad.....itās learning,but I would bet a 3D print my design class looks 100% from a non-art Ed person.Bad STEM/STEAM makes for bad teaching.Its both a detriment and a https://t.co/3RDloGk52t is a an example of good STEAM:
#K12artchat A2a The first school art project i remember had us go crazy with crayons on a sheet of construction paper. Later we covered the paper over with something like shoe shine polish. After it dried we used pennies (poor school) to scratch the polish & expose the art. +
This is such a positive to hear from a pre-service teacher!! #k12ArtChat thatās why weāve also started using #CreativelyConnectedEDU in conjunction with the podcast!
A3: Either name you give it we still have to prove that it connects. The Atheistic of it makes the biggest impact along with the purpose behind it. #K12ArtChat
A2: Advocacy is key! Share the learning, process, thinking, and connections that are involved in art making. We have to break it down for the viewer AKA everyone. #k12ArtChat
#k12artchat A2c So i guess iām saying.. wanna promote the importance of art & design education? put it out there as often as you can. encourage others to do so too.
A2: This is so important especially at the elementary level to help change the mindset of āthe decorationsā in the hallway vs. displaying Ss learning outcomes kinda like posting test scores. #K12ArtChat
A2: we must teach our community - share the learning - when we display the art we also need to display the process, the standards - the learning #K12ArtChat

Question 4:
World changes are increasing the value of Art & Design in business and in life, what could we do to make communities more aware of this?
Start your answer with A4
#K12ArtChatQuestions
A2 I promote the importance of arts education by showing that arts is academic and that it is essential in effectively sharing ideas as well as a means to help all learners find their academic voice. #k12ArtChat
#k12ArtChat A4- Social media,social interactions with K-12 communities,interconnectedness.....again with getting people like @cooperhewitt who I love.....
#K12ArtChat A4 creative content is taking over social media. People of all ages are consuming the content and also creating it. Now the aesthetics of it and the quality of it is taught in the studio.
#K12ArtChat a4: Automation is a friend of Art. It has shifted what we value from functional to the aesthetic. Think about how they used to sell cars to how they do now. Find two car adverts to compare with kids. š
A4 our building went from science fair to STE(A)M fair. Weve help a cardboars chalenege every April. Getting Ss to promblem solve, design and create across the curriculum #K12ArtChat
There were a lot of People that were fuming bc Art is jumping on the safety band wagon. (Not abt that it is abt, having enough of being passed over that we finally made some noise abt it!) #K12ArtChat
#k12artchat STEM and STEAM can be used for growth- powerful integration, making connections ACROSS curricula, celebration of the arts with sciences.. but both can present stumbling blocks for art teachers- we adjust to meet the standards of diff subjects
#K12ArtChat

How might we help build networks of student artists and designers to develop identity and speed-up the feedback loop?

#k12ArtChat A5-Real https://t.co/3n6JfR8Beu students meet people,go to places,do cutting edge projects.Having awesome jurists for our Winterfest from @DrexelUniv and others is important.

aQ2- it is a matter of letting students step into the shoes of experts in the field. Let us teach them to see the world through an artist's lens. If students can't see like an artist, how can they say art and design are important? #k12artchat#VisualThinking
A5: I build in time for Ss to give each other feedback during the process of creation. (Gallery Walks, Ask 2 then me, Self-Evaluation forms when done) #K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat A6 honestly- Iāve explored YpuTube for so many things to meet my students artist Proposals. Iām learning so much on YouTube. Favorite right now is animation with original music.
A2- How I promote Art & Design Education is by giving my Art Students Real World Projects that Engage & Challenge their intellectual thinking #K12ArtChat hopefully this type of Advocacy will be seen by enough people & The Right People to make our way towards STEAM!

Iām not going to drive yāall batty by trying tinokiw through all the questions but I can say that events like this bring the Arts into the forefront, demonstrating how it can naturally and seamlessly facilitate #GrowthMindset#InnovatorsMindset#GlobalCompetencies#k12artchat
A7: @MsDurall & I just started planning it today after school abt including Visual Journals to be used in both our classes. (Assesments for both) #K12ArtChat#GoingToBeReallyCool
#K12ArtChat A7 I feel itās a human necessity, why does it need to be justified. Being a creative is deeply rooted in our core. Whether weāre good at it isnāt as important as having time to explore, experience, experiment, and loose themselves in thought.
A3- Art often doesnāt get the same recognition as any other Fine Arts area & can easily be seen as bottom of the barrel #K12ArtChat but thereās hope for Art, if we push to have STEAM instead of STEM!! With STEAM, the other subject areas see Artās validity much easier
@trevorabryan ās new book the Art of comprehension @TechChef4u ās new book creatively productive @KatieWhite426 ās book on Unlocked - assessment & creativity @EdwardPClapp ās book on participatory creativity - Iām going to have to write a blog post on these #k12ArtChat

A4- To make communities more aware of the Changes of Art & Design is to get our students out Within our community #K12ArtChat and working with Real World Projects to engage both our students and community members
A7 Canāt wait! Kids in ELAR really struggle with being stuck on finding a āright answerā, theyāre scared to let their minds wander & consider. Especially in writing. My hope is for deep, deep thinking & discovery, finding themselves in lit & art #k12ArtChat
