#aussieED Archive
#aussieED was founded on the belief that all teachers, and students, should have unlimited access to Professional Development, on their own terms, to improve their teaching, their schools and change the lives of the students they encounter. Since then, we have embarked on a mission to reach educators, not only in Australia but, all around the globe. We want to smash the barriers that prevent teachers from easily connecting and learning with each other. To that end, we have developed a regular Ed-chat each Sunday on twitter at #aussieED. The chat allows all teachers, leaders, administrators and all those connected with education to meet on an unbiased platform and discuss the real issues that effect what happens in classrooms everywhere. Our chats are authentic because we are real teachers walking the same walk that so many do everyday.

- what creativity looks like isn't important to children ... Feels like ...eats it for breakfast - genuine agency. (Dewy, 1946)
Exactly. Key is to create the environment to allow this to occur
A1 we have a Self Organised Learning Environment in 3ZB with blended learning and mixed instruction
Me too... Great topic and I'm super glad to have the wonderful steering the the chat tonight https://t.co/aVRylAcmko
Hi, Lux from Sydney. Looking forward to tonight's chat
A1. Creativity is looking at things & learning w/ new eyes, seeing the beauty & wonder not yet known. When Ss see it its a wow mmt
A1: Creativity is when the teacher lets go of being in charge and learns with the students. When Ss have a part in creating.
A1 Finding a solution to a real problem, making or producing a product/idea, sharing & collaborating. Too many to fit in a tweet
A1. I do feel a responsibility as a educator to drive empathy in my students creativity.
A1. Stuts playing 2 their strengths through having high levels of stu. voice evident. Meaning, more choices/chances 2 be creative.
Hey I can't make it tonight. Will defs read through the archive once it's up. Have a good one.
A1 - It's visible. There is something different about the 'vibe' of the room. Engagement is key
A1 creativity extends beyond the classroom as well, students use awareness of community to identify problems to solve in their way
A1: Getting it wrong to know what getting it right looks like. And tastes like. You never know til you taste…
A1 Looks like many different paths sounds like a buzz
where they feel confident to fail
Creativity is not failing in learning and trying again. That irks me. It’s so much more.
If only I were a coffee drinker:)
A1. Creativity looks like all four walls of whiteboard in my "frontless" classroom covered in scrawl. https://t.co/YJNurYZFJv
I'm a student teacher at the moment, but that is what I hope to achieve with future students. How do you go about it?
A1. There is no 1 way to do something
A1: Ss being free to think outside the square and share those ideas. I teach online - creative ideas are shared & valued
We're taking love of science and maths back
I believe Imagination is a key elements to help Ss develop creativity
Hej hej followers Hallo from Sweden. Look forward to follow, it's lunch time here 😎
Hosting dinner tonight, looking fwd to catching up on later on!!
A1. Passion, choice, collaboration, risk taking for teachers and students.
the culture of the room is so important
A1 When students are creating something meaningful not just regurgitating something because I told them to.
Creativity in the classroom means its ok to F.A.I.L First Attempt In Learning.
Have you tried My students are loving this atm
Our 3-6s are loving Carmen San Diego as part of our geography based project based learning Can we see?
Hi Michelle. Welcome to Oz. International perspectives are so valuable
Hey joining from Akl NZ A1 challenging the status quo, following passions and having choices
A1 not being afraid to make a mistake but learning from it
I envy you and your cooking classes.
I also think its finding the problem in the first place, then having those skills to solve it
A1. Risk taking - no wrong way as long as you can teach it or explain it!
A1 Students using only visual images in a PowerPoint presentation and talking class through them
A1 when Ss are fully engaged, having fun and enjoying creating their own artefacts!
A1: teachers taking a step back and allowing the students to guide the discovery
A1) Creativity in my classroom is constantly evolving. Legos and recycled cardboard are two big parts of it:)
Although I don't have a class, when I did it was lots of buzz: words like how? why? and oh yeah! https://t.co/XVRU0Iaind
Question 2
Why is it important for our learners to be creators rather than consumers of their learning?
https://t.co/46ekTqBeBu
A1:open ended problems, students owning their progress and knowing what is expected of them and not afraid of failing
Just watching SBS.
Chef is most important person in Antartica
I'm looking at learning how to use this in the next few weeks
New world responsibility/global thinkers/ Change is a must/ Global warming/ human destruction of____
I love this answer! That is exactly the type of environment that I want to create for my future students
love this! Creativity does come with responsibility
It should always be evolving
Carmen San Diego.. boy does that take me back!!
Totally agree. A culture can feed creativity or starve it.
A1: student voice and choice around creating messy solutions to identified problems
A2 creators have a real purpose for their learning, a real audience, their accountability is higher
Yes! And that’s where we go with any inquiry based learning. Not what I care about, what my Ss care about! https://t.co/lCJK9kd38M
A1 Creativity to us is being able to have the same task but come up with x amount of different outcomes. Critical thinking too!
Creativity breeds ownership. Ownership breeds choices. Choices breed responsibility. https://t.co/3D9nDZfsFN
Question 2
Why is it important for our learners to be creators rather than consumers of their learning?
https://t.co/46ekTqBeBu
I'll definitely be posting all students games next week. I've told them my twitter buddies will be judging for me.
Let me know how you go :)
You can't learn without checking out the false paths https://t.co/FOR7hA3neZ
A1: lots of failures I mean experiments
Michelle, principal from Saskatchewan, Canada jumping in late to the chat and very early in the morning.
It comes back to motivation. If you are creative then you connect to the task and are intrinsically motivated
A1 room and time for flow
Always great to have you on board Carl
Hear hear Anna https://t.co/JGqVf0bYbi
A1: Creativity looks like organised chaos, own choice, noise, ideas, collaboration, own world, mix of materials.
A2. Society won't move forward unless change occurs. If Ss are only consumers & not creators, then no change occurs
A2:students need opportunities to fail and learn from their failure, resilience is so important in this day and age
I see passion as a big part of it. Helping my Ss to find their talents. Using all their intelligences.
A2- so the learning path can be individual to each ss, it can any which way it needs to
A1: brand new sunrise each day....& a big .....YET
Michelle, principal from Saskatchewan, Canada jumping in late to the chat and very early in the morning.
A1 creativity looks like student ownership, choice - in task, presentation, working area.
Very addictive and time consuming, but a great learning tool. Write your own questions guys
A2 We need to teach our Ss how to learn, not what to learn. I love work around non-googleable questions
A2 Creativity allows for ownership over learning = meaningful and authentic learning experiences
Thanks for reminding me. I have some ice tea in the fridge:)
A2. Through creating do they develop new knowledge & understanding. Curiosity & creation is the root of innovation
A2. Ownership of own learning which leads to motivation @ creation / invention!
A2. We must encourage & support Ss in creating in many contexts if they are to lead the future
A2. Because we want learners to be motivated and see their learning journey as a part of something big. https://t.co/O1jPBFqMFt
Question 2
Why is it important for our learners to be creators rather than consumers of their learning?
https://t.co/46ekTqBeBu
A2 creativity more likely to engage and empower the students - SO important!
Thanks Brett. Feel like rubbish so this is nice and relaxing.
A1 group thinking and lots of discussions Exploring, trying and failing
A2. Critical and creative thinking means they'll see through the crap that mobs like Pearson serve up
2 Allows for exploration, realisation of skills, leads to authentic learning that actually sticks
Thanks Hannah, best way to do that is to do as they do. Your lead is the barometer for a risk taking culture
A1 creativity to me: collaborative, engaging, interactive, imaginative and being flexible in the classroom
A1 looks exactly like the imagination of a kid who's been told to once again to "log on" - instant log off.
What is this? It's a rocket (told by the kid). She sees it, she imagines how it works. That's creativity. https://t.co/FE8CwdMBuO
A2 when our learners are the creators we have classrooms/education without boundaries. Walls & ceilings no limit!
A1: Wall filled with student learning journeys that are purposeful, relevant and encourages reflection.
A2 - Encouragement to want to learn and a passion to try new things
If students are just learners they are listeners, they are not doers. Let them go, let them explore.
A2 so students ultimately control their own destiny
Can you please ping me? Would love to show our Ss and be your test drivers
always s goodie and apparently if you add alligator clips and batteries you have makey makey 😀
A2 Tech allows us to be producers, not just consumers. We can do so much! We are all producers and thus included: inclusive!.
A2 Ss should be able to show their learning & understanding of information, not memorise text from worksheets or google
A2 By creating students demonstrate their understanding & knowledge of topics, rather than spitting out memorised facts
Failure is key, We all learn form our mistakes
A2: students need to be invested in their learning to see the purpose and take the learning to a place of their choosing
Great to be formally linking with the peeps... Love that we share the love!! https://t.co/G9GZHL5qdJ
Hey Corey here from Melbourne. Look forward to seeing our creative ideas
some ethical considerations come into play with creativity too
A1 - Creativity in the classroom is collaborative & engaging. Using trial & error to work out how to support students learning.
A2 Ss need to feel ownership of their own learning. Pride comes from creating not consuming. https://t.co/rOdT9fOUgU
Question 2
Why is it important for our learners to be creators rather than consumers of their learning?
https://t.co/46ekTqBeBu
A2: Firstly, ownership and buy in of their own learning journey, but also, the best ideas come from those who tinker, play, make.
A2. They were born that way
A2. Because if students don't create, they are learning to just passively accept the world the way it is. https://t.co/yRE1nTTsZ5
A2: when they own it =engagement and memories for life - relevant
A2 Creation leads to much deeper learning than consuming.
So many ways you can use it!
A2: we want Ss to do not just learn.
sometimes not having the answers works too. Great discussion starter :)
Great visual describes the problem and solution beautifully
We gave our Ss a blank A4 and asked them to be creative. Everything from scrunched ball to paper doll
If students are creating, they are engaged. Engagement = improvement = learning
+ A2: Creativity allows mistakes to be celebrated, learned from and used to grow.
A2. Because the chn become the drivers of their learning and the expert when sharing their solutions / ideas
a great collab between and
MANY!! Wish this had always been a consideration! Cars would run on hydrogen!
I think it's a cycle: creators of learning consume learning from everywhere and turn it into action https://t.co/RBd7YPQJ87
Question 2
Why is it important for our learners to be creators rather than consumers of their learning?
https://t.co/46ekTqBeBu
A2 responsibility, experiencing success and failure, knowing their voice matters
A2: Ss are more likely to learn if they are doing something rather than trying to "sit and get".
A2 the ability to solve problems, the ability to apply rather than just absorb the knowledge, critical thinking
A1 Four Dimensional Education throw away the textbook and syllabus, just learn for the sake of it! https://t.co/xrIk5Ua49L
A2. Actually some teachers need to be more creators, and less consumers, too
Learning to learn from failure is SO important. We don't all know how to do it innately though
some great approaches, thanks. I love the idea of creating a safe/ trusting environment where students can share
A2) Content is easily accessed
Process and creativity have to be allowed to flourish
A2. Engagement and students feeling in charge of their own leaning! So important
A2 because teacher drip-consumption is the cancer of creativity and agency.
Two awesome PLN's working together. Thanks for all the advice
but getting it wrong might be part of the journey to getting it right? Failing to learn is the failure!
OMG I can't keep up! This is one of the most active chats I've been involved in. More active than
Creativity consumes learning
No, happened to find a dos version which we use on our Airs with Boxer app. Can share with you later?
totally agree, can be hard to change that mindset, we have always done it this way...
+ A2: Creativity cultivates an attitude of ‘smart risk-taking’ and ownership of learning.
A2: Students have the capabilities to learn for themselves, to build new pathways, to answer their questions of interest.
A2. Because involving students in a genuine creation process leads to deeper & more lasting learning. https://t.co/AWXUpYiBAD
A2: We want Ss to explore, learn, create and share to have authentic experiences, not passive https://t.co/cyw5d7rSzk
Question 2
Why is it important for our learners to be creators rather than consumers of their learning?
https://t.co/46ekTqBeBu
A2 Because the world is moving ..... FAST
A2: because anyone can consume knowledge. Being able to create not only takes knowledge and understanding, but also passion.
A2 creativity and developing own know lie more powerful and purposeful then passively consuming
A2 Because it's more meaningful and authentic. (try again this time with the tag) https://t.co/ShFAP5HOb5
Question 2
Why is it important for our learners to be creators rather than consumers of their learning?
https://t.co/46ekTqBeBu
I have 30 laptop boxes in my room that Ss build amazing things with. So much creativity in play!
A2. Creating = Active & Consuming = Passive. Learning theories (whatever your flavour) all agree on ACTIVE
Sure, but is it always considered to be failure…or simply an alternative method…
A2 to provide voice and choice over their learning
A2- Ss more likely to consume what they create themselves!
Neuroscience of learning - creating knowledge builds new neural pathways
I love that I always have a bag by my door to take to school. It's making me more environmentally conscious, too:)
A2: Because creativity is no longer a want - its a need!
A2: Creating involves greater higher order thinking than consuming. Get those brains working
A2 creativity is what leads to innovation(creation in action)
great point- and it needs to start in pre teacher training
A2 We need to consume & create. Consumption leads to understandings we need in order to create meaningfully.
A2. Same reason we need to give the software for creation rather than consuming! Designing a object to print rather than download!
Also fosters a growth mindset
A2 more fun and learning in creating than just consuming!
creating a culture- great advice!
A2 We need creators to build the future
A2 because the world they live in needs people who can solve problems not remember them
anyone played Ana in Overwatch yet, the updates so slow.
A2 creators aspire, inspire, problem solve & show resilience - a fundamental skill set for tomorrow's jobs!
A2: the ability to apply and demonstrate learning is a lot more powerful then reciting lines from a textbook
absolutely! We have to model to our students
A2 because no one keeps a job for what they already know, rather what they can continue to contribute and learn
A2. Creative skills are needed for jobs of the future. Info is readily available Ss need to manipulate, create, solve problems
A2 same principle as eating takeaway vs cooking your own food - you r learning to feed a hungry mind with satisfaction 🍔
A2 because it helps us solve our own problems and not necessarily wait for others to find the solutions on our behalf
To summarise; be people who aren't just able to regurgitate information for an end of school exam? Interesting...
A2 - the student's creativity outshines the content being delivered. It's all about giving them the tools of how to learn
Yes! Every one learns differently
+ A2: A creative classroom culture is supportive of intrinsic motivation and flexible thinking.
So true! https://t.co/YTGuP6PEW7
A2 because the world they live in needs people who can solve problems not remember them
A2-creating allows you to look at various solutions to various problems,& allows Ss to solve problems in real life situations.
A2:s outcomes improve when they have to think too often T give the answer or s use Google where no thinking is required
ARE WE CONSUMING NOW OR CREATING?
interesting take. What comes first?
WIsh that was true for all educators :( https://t.co/Hb0UPD9B9R
A2 because no one keeps a job for what they already know, rather what they can continue to contribute and learn
Love it. Will def try it this week 😄
Deciding to go this direction 2 years ago first thing every day has made my Ss more invested in their whole day.
It is what we should be encouraging our Ss to do
I feel that being a consumer is passive, where as being the creator involves being actively involved their own learning
A2 creativity harnesses being, doing and knowing
A2: Creativity involves the highest of thinking skills. To create you need to deconstruct your knowledge & produce s'thing new
A2: We see a deeper level of learning when Ss teach someone else. It's interesting to watch their methods https://t.co/NLIdSQNhGG
A1Creativity in maths: How many different strategies/ methods can u use to find the solution?
a2: creating is translating an idea into a product. It's a way of demonstrating an understanding at a deeper level.
A2 students taking ownership of their own learning, inspires and encourages others around them
It's not always about the jobs of the future I believe it should b more abt useful skills to have in life https://t.co/NdMzEiA3MW
A2. Creative skills are needed for jobs of the future. Info is readily available Ss need to manipulate, create, solve problems
We should create our content to suit our context not consume and reteach others ideas, share and adapt https://t.co/JFY4rgAxR2
A2. Actually some teachers need to be more creators, and less consumers, too
yes all evidence points to the need for creative thinking in STEAM roles
A2: If Ss are creators, then they have buy in, passion & relevancy. They know their voice is valued & trust and community follows.
Ha ha, which came first? The creativity or the critical thinking?
or what new way can you create to solve the problem?
I think it's organic, but where is the meaning in creation in a vacuum?
A2 Stampede to rubbish consuming knowledge. Impossible to be creative without it. Very sad
A3 being comfortable with not having the right answer to a problem straight away.
A3 Risk taking, learning from mistakes, collaborating, communicating, questioning oh and Life long learning
e.g. I blog & write to develop my understanding of the world & my own thinking, in response to what I've consumed.
A3. Passion for research learning!
+ A3: A creativity-friendly classroom entails creating a classroom atmosphere in which seeking and solving problems is welcomed.
A2: Creating content allows our students to learn life lessons. Creating for others makes students look outwards. That’s healthy!
A3. Creativity is so hard to 'teach'... we can foster creative ideas and skills but I don't think we should 'teach it!
Part of creativity is prototyping and iteration. We need to analyse what worked and what needs improvement
a3 resilience, not everything works the first time. fail forward, first attempt in learning
A3 collaboration, self regulation, resilience, persistence...
Yes! And access quality commercial support/programs to do the best creativity work that has the most impact
A3. Team work, collaboration, persistence, trial & error, questioning, risk taking & explorers?
A3. Giving children choice and room to give and share their ideas and work in a way that is best for them
This is what our students do in the 3rd stage of our process after concept attainment https://t.co/xcWdvS1whJ
A2: the ability to apply and demonstrate learning is a lot more powerful then reciting lines from a textbook
A3 Resilience, research - finding, connection, collaboration
A3 Also being fine with sharing failures and partial ideas so others can help improve them
A3 facilitators, moderators and activators of student learning, knowing what they need to move forward
A3 an inquiring mind...a love of making stuff
A3 We need to teach students to think divergently and ask meaningful questions
A3 The ability to collaborate, question the norm, find & solve problems, and tools to share their learning
A2)My first thought is because they see so many more perspectives instead of just one.
A3. A great question - transdisciplinary skills
Creativity also starts with the teacher. If the teacher fosters and embraces it, then it will filter to the Ss.
A2 create learning equation=gather info,leads to enhanced knowledge,creating better understandings,allowing empathy&hypothesising
A3 That FAIL mean First Attempt In Learning.
A3. Oft-forgotten: persistence. Like success, creativity is sometimes 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration https://t.co/4e930vjf9n
A3)
Risk taking
Resilience
Belief in oneself
Need to be encouraged not taught
A3. Creativity requires deep learning, students need to think, question, pursue, & create—taking agency & ownership.
+ A3: A creativity-friendly classroom provides experiences with choice, provides informational feedback in assessment.
A3. We need to celebrate failure as a learning opportunity, rather than as something bad. We need 2 enc risk taking
Can you find it somewhere other than just asking me? How long is a piece of string?
Glad to see you have joined in the fun tonight
true, also about passions
A3- Resiliency! ss need to be able to accept and learn from mistakes to have authentic creativity https://t.co/PwUDLVc4FN
where does commodification sit? Consumptive or creative?
So proud of the team all aboard tonight
A3 - passion and an engaging classroom that encourages Ss to want to try new ideas without fear of failure
A3 THis whole Robinson kick is illusory. If you don't know what it is you can't teach it... https://t.co/5SoMpbx9Cp
Love that idea! I look forward to sharing pictures when I'm back at this in a few weeks.
A3 Not only the skill to solve problems, but the skill to find the problem in the first place.
A3 We need to develop confidence in our students to take risks, fail, and iterate so they continue to improve
A3 Being able to collaborate with others. Taking feedback without losing vision and just generally taking risks without fear
A3: trust, confidence, lateral thinking, connecting new ideas with existing knowledge ...
A3: Game-Based Learning: structure, rules, expectation of failure (that's how we learn!), and just enough difficulty/challenge
+ A3: It encourages self-assessment, teaches both cooperation and independence, and encourages questioning and experimentation.
A3 questioning skills - students asking questions. Reasoning - students explain their thinking.
A3 To foster creativity we need to allow our students to play, explore, make mistakes and ask lots of questions
Agreed Kelly. So many outside factors. Our role is to encourage and foster
A3: we need to foster risk taking for true creativity to occur
We need patience, the ability to step back and allow students to follow the necessary path. Guide when required
Yes. I've been trying maker/genius time for the last two years. Excited to tweak it some more this year.
first and foremost u need to be aware of your own imaginative & creative behaviours
I ask my Ss everyday what did you fail at today... Shows them they have continued to learn
A3 to be critical, reflective, to collaborate with others, to persevere when met with challenges and be open to new ideas!
A3 A willingness to take a risk and to try again. Problem solving skills and an open mind
A3 sense of wonder, ability to question, resilience, lateral thinking, being able to challenge status quo all necessary
A3. Treating every single step as a part of a journey and ways to work through failures and roadblocks. https://t.co/jTdA8OSmId
A3 Students need confidence to solve problems, come up with solutions and think outside the box.
A3 openness to failure and experimentation, curiosity, collaboration, plus everything everyone has said
I'm on the fence; see the benefits but fear that extrinsic motivation. What are your thoughts?
Loving how we can all come together and share our knowledge with respect and a hint of fun https://t.co/n8hgM7hNYA
So proud of the team all aboard tonight
A3 resilience, collaboration and the ability to think of a new solution to solve the question
A3. To promote creativity we must cultivate courage. If we only do what's "right" we'll never take a risk. https://t.co/Xw0cWzsG5M
A3: Resilience and iteration. When creating, people will knock your ideas. Keep challenging yourself to get better. To get up. Go!
A3 the ability to catch their ideas when they fly past
A2: really import to think of our staff professional learning as this too often we get in a meeting spew out info
so many buzz words and jargons
A3 - Imagination and innovation. Passion and persistence
Good luck it is moving so fast,... I am finding it hard to keep up
A3 Celebrate differences, teach to question & look 4 possibilities, question status quo, ask why not?
Encouraging students and showing them they can make mistakes is a big one! https://t.co/RlNSUPkTav
A3 To foster creativity we need to allow our students to play, explore, make mistakes and ask lots of questions
A3 Creating space for Ss to play, explore, investigate with variety of tools & equipment! Ss are naturally curious & inquisitive
A3: skills to recognise creativity in all its forms; skills to cultivate and not kill it; skills to advocate and encourage it
A3: we need to develop S who are not afraid to fail and hence are resilience is key
A3. Observation, active listening, the ability to see patterns, to see the freedom with constraints and reflection
Exactly https://t.co/AWh39XrVW0
A2 students taking ownership of their own learning, inspires and encourages others around them
A3 Courage Resilience Critical Thinking because "life is lived forwards but understood backwards"!
I agree. We can meld science & playfulness. Systematisation & creativity. Function & aesthetics.
Or knowing that there is more than one answer, be that right, wrong or otherwise! https://t.co/lddWmK3tGK
A3 being comfortable with not having the right answer to a problem straight away.
or if given a problem, how to pull it apart and try to solve it.
Ohhh, using this in tomorrow. They have great ideas to fix the world, but can't articulate WHY 👍🏼
is 'critical' thinking a buzz word?
A3. Wrangling Edu-unicorns
problem solving requires creative thinking.
A3: A thirst for knowledge, critical thinking, questioning, research, community, multiple perspectives, & how to try again
A3 - a sense of humour, resilience, aspiration and motivation, critical thought, collaboration. https://t.co/aBOc8LUHz4
A3 collaboration, exploration, experimental attitudes, systematic approaches to problem solving, confidence, self esteem, ❤️learning
A3 You can't just redefine creativity by using other similarly vague and abstract nouns?
Yep, I personally take issue with the idea that because something doesn’t work the intended way, it is failure. :)
It's a virtue! Otherwise how will we leverage the opportunities for 21C creative learning mindset and resilienceness?
We always need a bit of fun! Great to have so many first timer chat participants :)
Active listening is key, so many of my Ss lack that ability sometimes
absolutely! And a hard one to foster if Ss parents only promote A's or high scores as the only way to success
A3: need 2 foster critical thinking & flexibility, & provide time & opportunity for Ss to develop trust in their own abilities
A3 - to think beyond the box... There is no box, mistakes are valuable, and everything is worth a shot
I agree! They need to be comfortable making mistakes and not being afraid to try again. https://t.co/Beo2zav0XW
A3: we need to foster risk taking for true creativity to occur
I agree, creating is investing a part of you and when you are invested, you are engaged.
A2: persistence, patience, optimism, collaboration, multiple solutions, listening to their passion, resilience.
Totally agree. Love the design thinking process to unpack problems and find solutions
All these things https://t.co/w2wVcU82Io
A3 Risk taking, learning from mistakes, collaborating, communicating, questioning oh and Life long learning
Feels like it sometimes, but only if you don't live it!!
I too was afraid of extrinsic motivation. But there is nothing wrong with it...
You can't really 'teach' creativity. You can enable, encourage & not stifle it though.
Thanks for the shout out mate
A3: risk takers we need students to be confident when they fail
A3- We are all born with the skills to be creative (asking questions, making bold choices) but as we get older sometimes we forget
A3: A love of learning and discovery without expectation of achievement. Critical and creative thinking skills and ownership.
A3 Entirely context driven. The more you know about a problem, unsurprisingly, the more creative you might be.
often more than one appropriate answer to a problem for sure, I don't know about "otherwise" :P
Sorry all got to go to my other passion playing 🏀🏀 enjoy!
A3 - showing an array of examples of people doing amazing creative things and highlighting the process involved mindset
which is how some of our best inventions have occurred! I didn’t intend for this to happen, but…..
Because of my desire to get good grades in school (extrinsic), I am now a PhD candidate and spec. ed teacher
A2 - Involving students in an engaging creation process leads to lasting learning & skills for the future.
in schools we need to nurture that natural creativity that students come to school with
I hear you. I would add some staff to that list as well
A3- we need to be teaching the teachers too!!
so throw out some alternatives! Jump in and get involved.
+ A3: Many skills of a creative-friendly classroom centre around Design Thinking processes. https://t.co/to7jemOSgY
so very true! I have students who have such high expectations of themselves that don't like making mistakes
Text from Aussie Curric: Apply critical and creative thinking processes in order to generate and assess solutions
Love this idea! Great for math spatial skills too!
Absolutely. Some teach the same way they've been teaching for 20 years with no innovation or creativity. https://t.co/wKcMwH5N0F
true the tch needs to be creative in their work too
A3: persistence, patience, optimism, collaboration, multiple solutions, listening to their passion, resilience.
Must be some sort of amazing leader? 🤔
Science has shown us that unless mistakes were made we could never progress
That's how post-it notes were invented. They incorporated a glue that "didn't work properly"!
I say this to my kids! Creativity is the application of the ridiculous!
Failure is so important. Ss need to see it as a natural part of learning
A3 support students strengths and encourage students to use it around the classroom
That's why more teachers have 2 teach that is more than ok, so it can be the way of working norm
hahaha I imagine otherwise to be the 'I don't know if that's right or wrong but let's investigate further!' 🙂
A3 ppl saying okay to fail but in testing culture is this true?
But yet it wasn’t a ‘failure’, it was turned into an alternative.
A3: Teach Ss to synthesise ideas in a variety of ways, encourage student questions, mind mapping, innovative planning
A4: Let them ask the questions, and see where they take it.
A4 The question should rather be "how do you get students to ask the questions"...
My five year old floors me with questions all the time. Our job is make sure Ss come out of school that way
Hopefully one day one of my 'failures' will make me a fortune 😄
Extrinsic motivation actually drives a lot of what we as humans do. It gets a bad rap. Pleasing others is human.
A3 - Encourage discussion. It challenges them to listen to other students’ opinions and think critically about their ideas.
can sometimes take ourselves and projects too seriously. Need a laugh every now and then.
me too.. We just have to keep encouraging the risk taking!
There have been studies to suggest that too much extrinsic motivation can actually impair creativity
Yes true, also about passions
looks like a pretty amazing speech and looking forward to reading about the co-learn meet up events also
A4.
What if?
What about?
What next?
Someone had the insight to think & embrace rather than instantly reject.
Strengths is also a big one! Use their strengths in a positive way https://t.co/mQzGA53J3B
A3 support students strengths and encourage students to use it around the classroom
A4: What do you think? What if? Where else could you use this? Why? Think like a four year old and the thousands of ?s they ask!
do we need to tch parents this too
agree. Everything's a response to something.
Very true but some Ts find this difficult to let the reins loose. Any advice for them?
A4 it's not our questions that count- student inquiry is the top priority- promote their questions!
A3 hey Ss, what would you like to do?
A4 what makes you think that?
or do we comply with society?
A4: how? why? Can you explain it to me? Are my faves
A4. Why, why, why, why, why? I don't know, what do you think? How does that work?
A3: don't they say school beats the creativity of kids!? Celebrate risk takers. Celebrate process https://t.co/jsymrgvyLx
"Develop, modify and communicate design ideas by applying design thinking, creativity, innovation" Text from Curriculum
Only because you can't MAKE someone be creative.. but haven't you ever written a creative love letter? ;)
Here's my kids growth mindset activity last week - learning lyrics while they teach themselves to knit https://t.co/qvyQvuWnEL
A4. Any question that creates a drive to deepen focus on any part of their thoughts!
need to get away from the assessment is at teh end. That stifles evaluation
A4 - How can we? What is next? What if?
Critical thinking is vital! So is being able to accept critical comments from peers and teachers
A4: I think a lot of the Visible thinking techniques help creativity. Why do you think that?
how, indeed? So commodification is about creative leveraging.
A4 How can we...? What if...? Even better if...? What else? Why? How can you show this?
A4. "Yes, but why?" "What if it wasn't like that?" "How come it does that?" "Why not?"
A3) I feel like I'm still learning the skills they need. Cooperation-My 1st gr are beg to learn how to be in group.
A4. Questions that have multiple ways of answering. Too often we structure the inquiry, where Ss need to have time in free inquiry
A4 Why? How might we...? What do you think about...? yes, and...? what next?
a4 does it need an overt question?
A4. Why not? What if? Display it? Feel it? How else? Take another perspective? Whose perspective?
A4: Imagine if we? Could you do it this way? Have you thought about? What if we put this with that!
Great Q Parents are not great at accepting failure
A4: just simply.. Why? Get them to question the world instead off us posing all the questions for them
A4 What do you think? How could you do that differently? What do you wonder? Questions that empower student autonomy
A4- Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?
A4 how, what if, I wonder, how could, what might
A4 - What about... What if... How might we... If that was not there what would be there instead... https://t.co/CAh9Vqvzqd
too often S are too scared of the failure to even try a test question trying is better then not attempting
A4 what should you do? What do you think you could do? How could you help?
A4: is there another way?
To have the students push the teacher to newer heights - that would increase engagement and the questions.
I agree! After we F.A.I.L. we can S.A.I.L. Second Attempt in Learning
WHY is the key.... But also the How
a situation without a question could be what inspires a creative solution from a student
A4 how/why/ what if/ what makes you so sure/ what about...
Oz Curric links in Spanish syllabus: Express creative ideas and imagined experiences that relate to Spanish communities
They have to see it modelled, because you can trust the students. And teachers need to explore WITH them.
A4. Questions that provide students with a chance to delve deeper beyond the surface. Simply 'How' https://t.co/LcTDETJYlu
In an ideal world, evaluate a prototype to create next product…if only we had the time!
A4. There are many different questions we can ask in different ways depending on the student and situation
I find visible thinking routines a great way to explore creativity and critical analysis
& are same but different! Precision in vocab is also creative 😉
A4: I don’t reckon you can do that...
It's amazing the power of WHY https://t.co/4eeHlbeLIv
A4: just simply.. Why? Get them to question the world instead off us posing all the questions for them
A3 my favourite one to say is: what am I a teacher? Haven't I taught you to teach yourself yet?
A4 - Are you ready for a challenge? Are you willing to come on a journey? Are you ready for possible failure along the way?
Great response. Modeling and supporting needs to occur. Ts need to also accept failure too
absolutely! One of the reasons why I want to become a teacher is because we can inspire stud to never stop asking q
I especially like how could you help? Teaching empathy and thinking beyond yourself! https://t.co/QJG3gKoz8K
A4 what should you do? What do you think you could do? How could you help?
Same. We often lock ourselves into a set of conclusions because we aren't able to imagine differently.
A4 When Ss has problem... ask Ss how they can solve it? Encourage creativity in their response and provide opportunity to solve it
it sounds also like these could be questions coming from the tech. questions and opportunities should come from students
A4 Anything to get students to start thinking about how to improve somthing. Students often need guidance to start
Open-ended Qs that leave room 4 ingenuity & individual ideas t2B shared, that lead to exploration and ah-ha moments.
Definitely! I am a fan of harassment by questioning : )
Allow them to come up with their own questions and give them time to think. Guide rather than give them answers.
A4. How about encouraging them to ask more questions. I want less questions from me and more from them!
A4 Whose voice is heard? Whose is not? How can you communicate what is not heard?
This week's blog post was about comparing 2 disparate things to explore meaning: baking & writing https://t.co/VvN8MpWGMh
Love this, too! I'm seeing a baseball pitcher in my head.
rather than limited choice open it up. Are tch able to in schools?
Oh yes!! Will use that one now!! https://t.co/sei2Dczpgf
I agree! After we F.A.I.L. we can S.A.I.L. Second Attempt in Learning
Teachers can model learning and exploring through this - it's how I teach. Knowledge construction is great fun.
from what they see, experiences, hear, feel etc. their questions outside of what is presented to them as the task / unit
70% of jobs will go; 50% will have 2b entrepreneurs/freelancers is current ed. giving Ss these skills
https://t.co/MaFSSxNEBZ
A4: How and why and explain…
A3 we are born creative our brains are continuously creating - as trs need to provide learning environment 2 nourish thinking
ever wondered why Ss need innovation and creativity embedded in their education exp? watch
Driving questions that get to the point, but not too quickly, like a little friend or a warm fire on a bleak day
A5 + Modelling creativity can inspire creativity in students
+ A4: I avoid questions that have only one acceptable answer.
A4 what would you do differently next time?
Questions framed around visible thinking 'what makes you say that?' 'Step inside' 'tug of war'
A4: That’s a great question…when you find out, let me know too!
I think we are told somewhere along the line that asking questions is wrong, so we comply
We need to keep it simple for our students the who?what? when? where? why? and how? will spark the creativity
A4- model metacognition by asking our own questions aloud eg "I was wondering what would happen if... so I..."
so true! Some kids would love to speak, others prefer to present it in a vid! Think of ALL learners
always my pleasure. I get a lot out of blogging & am always thrilled if others take something away, too.
Yeah…what about the 2nd and 3rd and… Sorry, it’s one of my bug bears (personal opinion).
Noooo!! Don't take away my Google!!
The way you describe this reminds me of Thomas Edison and the Wright Brothers.
Question 5
What strategies / tools might you provide for students to explore their creativity?
https://t.co/ako4jgDfVz
Allowing students to wonder can be such a powerful learning tool https://t.co/cixlu0AkY2
A4 What do you think? How could you do that differently? What do you wonder? Questions that empower student autonomy
A4 what if..? Could we...? How can we improve...?
why not a deep question that doesn’t need an immediate answer?
A4 Any open end questions - no wrong answers
+ A4: Open and relevant questions stretch and add flexibility to the mind.
A4. What if? Are you sure? How can you be sure? I wonder if there's a different way?
A4 - I avoid Q's that have only one acceptable answer. Using open-ended questions spark imagination & encourages problem solving.
A4: going to put it out there... I'm not sold on 'why' as a good enough question.
A4- How? Why? What if? Having students question themselves and each other is incredibly powerful too.
Have you tried Maths Curse? Heaps of different topics in that one!
Anno's Mysterious Multiplying Jar works well too
+ A4: My teaching disposition has to be ready and able to affirm and recognize original and innovative responses.
Q4. Use 'what if' questions
What about the ability to navigate? Is this a or or an important one?
That is true! But the students have to get to be confident with that. That means tchrs need to be as well. https://t.co/1SF9GGjRXi
I agree. I have no idea why though, amazing growth happens through asking questions!
ha ha! I say that to my class & get the funniest looks! 1/2 though yr & I'm not sure they all get my humour yet.
A5: Anything from tinker tubs, to random materials, to learning areas, to personal interests, to expert chats, to playing…
I have not. I will check it out! Thanks
A4 Reflective questions, important to spark creativity we need to teach them to be reflective and to constantly be wondering
A5. What ever the situation or student feels they need at the time!
Creativity has renewed my love for learning. I've never loved teaching more since making this priority.
A5. As a maths teacher, my fave strategy is simply to remind them that creativity & imagination are vital! https://t.co/t9835dHpcI
A4: I don’t reckon you could cook that better than me…gets me lunch pretty much every day!
A5: time to wonder, research their own questions from class, talk with others with similar interests, genius hour.
I tend to agree With you on this
but when we have content we also need consumers
A5 genius hour is perfect for this-let students ask the question and create to answer it
A5. Problem solving, links with the wider world and opportunities to learn and grow from their mistakes. https://t.co/4a2uX7uPv7
Question 5
What strategies / tools might you provide for students to explore their creativity?
https://t.co/ako4jgDfVz
is it failure that is moving learning forward or at a stand-still? Teach accordingly!
I hope you have some photos you can share
You may have a deep question but it needs invest... The surface is a good place to start helps look deeper
A5 reflective skills followed by effective communication skills
A5 Love students exploring their passion through which brings out their creative thinking
Good point because it looks different for each student. It's more of a classroom culture.
A5 - time to explore, an encouraging environment, positive reinforcement, opportunity to ask q's
It is as a sentence starter & as toolset to determine the root cause of problems
A5. Show them how to take it further
A5: Student choice in content, product and/or process!
I love seeing creativity come through in Math. It is fascinating seeing the way that they come up with solutions.
maybe the question could be, "and?"
Just make sure the framework isn't limiting!
A4: if you did this again what would you do differently and come back to me in a week once you have thought about it
A5: freedom to explore with some guidance as a facilitator not a teacherr
I would love for you to share your Ss projects in
A5. Time, immediate & relevant feedback, real life application & humour!!
perhaps why not is better?
A5 - a reminder that you don't have to be in an Art class to be creative. Lots of reminders. https://t.co/WEQMk2I7OX
Question 5
What strategies / tools might you provide for students to explore their creativity?
https://t.co/ako4jgDfVz
Q4: Use graphic organisers to encourage Ss to answer questions creatively.
A5b. People mistakenly believe that there's no creativity in maths. But pure maths is ALL about invention https://t.co/10BN8Yub6w
A5. As a maths teacher, my fave strategy is simply to remind them that creativity & imagination are vital! https://t.co/t9835dHpcI
A5 maker space should be built in to our curriculums-encourage creative thinkers for the future
Great chat tonight ! Gotta fly - getting 3 X cherubs into bed on a school night ... Ciao friends!
A5: We use the MYP design cycle. I give them a start and Ss use the cycle to develop their own inquiry. Go where they need to go.
A5 Ss need support, support and more support just like we do whenever we try something new
ha ha ha! Such a great idea!!!
A5. Freedom on how to represent/present ideas & findings. Provide choice in both resources & development of outcomes
I bet your Ss will not forget it either
I LOVE that they're learning to knit! How wonderful! Super-good 4their coordination &motor skills too :-) !
I had 5/6s write their own Maths Curse book. Some brilliant ideas
A5 Teach them how to ask PHAT (Pretty Hard and Tough) questions. These types can't be googled.
Like I said, personal opinion. It’s not the failure that is the issue, but the term.
A4. How do we escape this nightmare?
A5: students need a scaffold for their thinking a rubric of questions or a design thinking flow chart
are you asking the wrong question or getting them started on the path to deeper thinking
A5 - I find it's not so much about the tools you use but the learning environment you create that fosters creativity
😂 You just got me out of cooking dinner until he figures out what I've done to him. Bravo Matt!
A5 - Since coming to Aus I find the use of the SRP in science a great way to allow students show creativity in science
A5- an inquiry framework and lots of time!
I really need to look at this Maths Curse... Is there a website or something that tells me more?
A5 My Ss love doing the time which lets them have choice in their learning and bring out their creativity.
A5) Really creative students use what's at hand...
but paper, blocks, shapes, computers, scissors, glue etc help
A5 know your learners and what they like doing use provocations/immersive activities to explore this then build from there
A5 everything & anything when imagination is limitless.
A5 engineering design cycle, maker tools, media production cycle, time, guiding questions
a5 experiences. knowledge of the world beyond their bubble. without any awareness they don’t have empathy for others situations
Time to wonder would be wonderful, not a second for that in the secondary I am afraid :
A5: students need to create their own problems
A5: Also service learning gives Ss the ability to be creative, help others & have empathy!
A5: Real life problems. Authentic audiences. Motivates creativity
project. Learn something new in 10 mins per day for 8 wks. They LOVE to knit!
A5 Have Ss turn to their shoulder partner and their own opinion
Just got finished reading Fermat's Last Theorem. Fascinating book about the creativity involved in "real" maths.
Critical & creative thinking in the curriculum - Ss need to be exposed to wondrous stimuli, my passion https://t.co/wfDBOBT6MY
Critical & creative thinking in the curriculum - Ss need to be exposed to wondrous stimuli, my passion https://t.co/8H9eHKMpdT
Being the judge of said food helps me though. Takes some of them a while to catch on!
That would have been fun! It's great for their writing and thinking to innovate on books like that!
When is that Eleni? Might have some by the end of term 3
A5 Learning how to and taking time to reflect on learning is important.
Not failure...
just not the solution to this problem
That's when I say " Tell me more" or " I cant wait to see what other ideas/Q's you come up with"
But not too much - be less helpful to allow students to create!
Press here and the other tulet books are amazing! My favourite artist
+ A5: Encourage students to use divergent thinking to generate ideas, to analyze and evaluate.
A5 - The most important tool for me is to create a space where questioning and visible thinking is nurtured and encouraged.
Yip. if you don't know what 'creativity' is, how can it be assessed?
Ha ha, my kids create plenty of problems
A5 Time and opportunities
A5: Inquiry Cycle is a wonderful way to teach/show/demonstrate/learn through creativity.
Definitely! It should be completely the opposite approach- ask questions, make mistakes, share!
Cant wait to see your Ss projects
Q5 Give them the msg that mistakes are what learners make, not a result of failure
A3 I found this design thinking tool kit had some great activities for developing skills in ideation https://t.co/s7LEQBIWIQ
students love to sketch their designs with a simple pen and paper
ABSOLUTELY!! Nothing useful to long-term thinking development to be gained by asking the question!
A5 Choice and flexibility
A5) We start every day with making/genius time. Older Ss come in to encourage.
why not? We need to ask ourselves what do we get from this.. Thinking about wording of our questioning
I let my students to take control of their own learning They prepare, present, peer assess their own class - they are creative
is now trending in Australia, ranking 43
See, that’s awesome. That’s creativity!
Yes, people think I will be offended when my Ss call me crazy!! Best compliment ever!!
A5. Work Alone Together from . Requires Ss 2 individually brainstorm. Reduces groupthink & judgement of initial idea
A range of presentation choices, creative prompts, discussing what creativity looks like in our classroom. https://t.co/lpLXjq6Pzv
A5. Freedom on how to represent/present ideas & findings. Provide choice in both resources & development of outcomes
A4 but is this any different to finding out the answer from a book?
A5 Look and learn global resources and collaboration greatest classroom tool for creativity https://t.co/BQ093P8PJi
A5 Look and learn global resources and collaboration greatest classroom tool for creativity https://t.co/p8wOgavoyK
+ A5: Creative thinking lessons should build on critical thinking and go beyond simple recall.
"This is how all young people should feel about life. Idealism, high hopes, enthusiasm & a sense of awe & wonder." William Damon
fantastic! lucky students to have that environment every day
A5 Replace exemplars with guidelines and say yes to ideas that you know are likely to fail
A6. The ones where the teachers and the students step out of their comfort zone! That's where new learning is best!
+ A5: They encourage student to consider "what if" possibilities and incorporate real-life problem solving.
A4.What are you learning how are you doing how do you know how can you improve where can you get help. Ss questions for our region.
A range of presentation choices, creative prompts, discussing what creativity looks like in our classroom. https://t.co/D039oPpfNk
Question 5
What strategies / tools might you provide for students to explore their creativity?
https://t.co/ako4jgDfVz
A6: I am constantly changing up ideas based on student need and fun ways to have them learn concepts. Hard to describe one.
A6: Find a human right being violated in the world. Research it and create a PSA or documentary to show how it can be solved. Go!
Some of the best lessons have involved book innovations
A6 Investing angles & shapes using
Ss able to see if they are right/wrong & make adjustments
https://t.co/RALB9tCMsc
Hello lovely lady! Hope you are well. Thank you for the support!
A5 - Ss used a multiple intelligence rubric where they had the opportunity to complete tasks in a variety of ways they learn best!
We get them to do the wondering on their time outside the lesson. That is like the PERFECT homework!
A6. Really I like any lesson that starts with a problem and provides the freedom for students to explore answers
A5 give open ended real problems within safe learning environment try tr as coach 2 keep pressing on new learning to solve
A6: not sure if it's terribly creative-I taught world history...in medieval times/Middle Ages.
Once I learned to let go, they showed me how much more fun we could have learning together:)
A5: 1) remove concerns about offering 'wrong' answers 2) ask open-ended Qs 3) incorporate problem-solving thinking
A6 Ss sourced texts and wrote comprehension worksheets and the swapped such great questions
A5 team building activities
No problem....I love the concept and the responses Ss get.
A6- English breakfast chemistry lesson - method of teaching physical and chemical changes, they then do a kitchen chem video
Better than a book!! Never ending rabbit hole waiting to be fallen down -if it has a purpose!!
Where to begin. My favourite at the moment would be describe 140 characters in 140 words
i agree - we want students to step outside their comfort zone - so we as teachers need to too!
A6 Just beginning Rube Goldberg machine unit. Amazing how engaged students are to design, create, test, fail, iterate
A6: How can you help next year's freshmen feel more comfortable in high school? Be Solutionaries...
... like exploration, alternative ways of thinking/making, communication.
A6. In a pinch, my favourite go-to is reflectional symmetry. Easy for kids to generate infinite designs. https://t.co/9Zwpw1Js2Y
big step for some, but that is exactly when the magic happens
A6. I'm a sucker for the 3Ps - Paper, pens & post-it notes
+ A5: Design activities that directly address critical content and that allow students to show what they know.
Write a word on the board - give students one hour to research and present findings- my word this wk - Fibonacci
so important- nothing can happen without solid relationship
