Hello #Ditchbook friends! I am SUPER excited to moderate tonight with the INCREDIBLE @mraspinall!
It's been an AMAZING #CSedWeek and #HourofCode. Can't wait to talk about computer science with all of you!
Hello, hello, #DitchBook friends!
Matt here, DTT author/blogger/speaker, 10+yr HS teacher.
Interested in coding and computer science? Want to know how it could fit in YOUR class? Tonight's the night!
@KarlyMoura and @mraspinall are our moderators. Enjoy!
Todd from Texas. 30 years in education, 20 teaching 6th grade Social Studies. Never have used the textbook.
Most years they were never even issued to Ss. #DitchBook
A1 💻 Computer science is MORE than just coding! It's the study of computers, how they work and how to use them to solve problems.
@LisaGuardino
and I created this #HyperDocs to help teach it.

A1: I say coding (which I don't do). What I do is a means to an end: increasing interest, making things work, develop critical thinking paths & problem solving. #ditchbook
A1: To me, someone who has limited experience with computer science, it is using algorithms and computers to create something amazing! Plus, there's a lot of cords, as evidenced by @mraspinall's Facebook posts! #ditchbook
A1: Computer science: all things related to how computers work, including but not exclusive to coding.
And it's something that can be used in just about ANY class (I'm learning)! #DitchBook
If you want AMAZING computer science genius then you MUST follow this lady right here ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
@VisionsByVicky is an incredible resource! #ditchbook
A1) The study of computers and the design that goes into creating and updating programs as well as theory and methods that will be used. When known a world opens up or a computer and a scientist can literally create anything. #DitchBook
A1: Computer science is hardware, software, networks & the internet. Too often it ends up just being coding but it's not. https://t.co/yYAjgtr7Ow#ditchbook
Definitely NOT just the coding! I think we get stuck on thinking that!! But on the flip.. some people think if you are good at coding you can fix hardware too! It's such a broad topic! #Ditchbook
A1: Algorithms and computational thinking used to solve problems. Using logical thinking to design solutions and input into devices. Computer science is also embracing all elements of design thinking including embracing failure. #DitchBook
A2: Trying some new things with my classes using technology over the past few weeks, refining it further this week, nothing #coding or #CSEdWeek official though #ditchbook
A1. Having an understanding about computers and how they work. Examples would include coding - making computers do tasks in code language, understanding binary, etc. #ditchbook
A2: Stu's are participating in coding activities on the web & coding w/robots.Stu's are using problem solving to write code in Blockly. In the past we have also created BreakOut boxes to repair code, decode messages & write code to unlock several locks. #Ditchbook
A1 it's more like the thought process of creating, designing, planning of computational systems. Ex: creating an app that will perform a task, or a certain way. You've gotta think if it to get it to work properly. #DitchBook
A2: @LeighKuhn2 and I host a code club. Our club is currently in the process of doing some #Maker challenges. Task: Your Sphero/Ollie is now a SLEIGH! Design a maze with Mega Blocks- must have 3 curves-Dash thru the maze w/code, knock over all cups and save Santa! #Ditchbook

A2- I'm celebrating it by facilitating involvement by teachers and students in my school board @CSViamonde. I promoted #HourOfCode via webinars so that teachers would feel comfortable doing #HOC in their classes. #DitchBook
A2:we are celebrating by having a month long celebration of learning about computational thinking. By building capacity&encouraging risk taking, we hope to have more Ts try the Hour of Code.& let’s not forget a pizza party for a random winner! #sgdsbcodes@mraspinall#DitchBook
A2: Missing the week... but hope to put some Makey Makey and Scratch coding together in the near future (now that our STEM room equipment is getting organized)... but have to admit I'm behind the curve on coding, etc. #DitchBook
A1: Computer science involves coding and programs and all that good stuff-but also how to utilize technology to solve problems, using technology creatively, and making innovations in the field of technology #ditchbook
A3: Brainpop has a creative coding program that we are using with students. Students are also using Scratch to retell stories and Osmos in the library makerspace. #Ditchbook
A2: The week always gravitates & inspires me. But, I typically don't go all in because it is always the week before our school wide holiday performance/party. We happened to be jumping into Copsaces/Merge Cube. #ditchbook
A3: My 7 year old daughter has a board game called Code: On The Brink that has cards with directions and a little cardboard robot to teach the idea of correctly inputting code, it's pretty fun! #ditchbook
A3: SO many resources! #Codebreaker , @GirlsWhoCode ,Google Applied Skills, @BlackGirlsCode , and more! But also the people within your community. Bring in parents, volunteers, local businesses, students from coding classes if your school has them! #ditchbook
A3-We have a 5th and 6th Grade Technology. In 5th Grade students are introduced to coding then in 6th grade they pick a pathway.

A3 - There are plenty of online resources but they don't seem to go deep enough to instill #confidence in most teachers. I'm trying to change that by going #BeyondTheBlinkingLights. I try to show how easy it is to adap to real world scenarios. #DitchBook
A3: Scratch is probably my go-to... but so many! Exploring Computer Science, PLTW, using Sphero Edu the last couple of weeks - has been great! #ditchbook

A3: If you have iPads, https://t.co/pKseyaLfwD has come good coding curriculum. Not really about all of computer science but good ways to do coding on iPads. #ditchbook
Q4) How can we integrate Computer Science into our own curriculum? Please share lessons or examples!
A copy of @codebreakeredu will be given to our favourite CS activity shared! #DitchBook
A4: As a social studies teacher by trade and now teaching special ed in social studies, I have always struggled making the connection. Anything to help me see would be delightful! #ditchbook

A2: I don’t have time to work it in this week but I’ll do it later on this year. I love pairing @scratch, @makeymakey boards and old board games. So many possibilities for interactive gameplay. #DitchBook#xplap
A4 b Writing ✏️ with robots 🤖
Have students sketch out a simple map and code their robot to visit to different places. Incorporate writing by having students write a story to retell their robots adventures. #ditchbook
I especially enjoy the video tutorials! They're easy to follow, clear and concise. Of course ourselves, I adapt them for use by my francophone colleagues. 👍 #DitchBook
A4: There are SOOO many ways! Math is ALWAYS closely integrated. Decoding is a great way to integrate w/functional text. Scratch can be used to share “moments” in SS & what we read. Ozobots in k-2 to work in the life cycle of animals. Tinkercad for art & sciences! #DitchBook
WOW ... Sooooo many resources and ideas for computer science tonight!
I am learning. A. LOT.
We'll curate LOTS of them in a #DitchBook post tomorrow. Keep an eye out! 👀👀 #DitchBook
A4) One of my favourite unplugged activities useful for supporting exponents and multiplication tables:
Math + CS: Cracking The Secret Code #DitchBookhttps://t.co/TRT4OTqVy0
A4: One thing I've always wanted to do with my oldest son (5, and in Kinder) is to get an Osmo and teach him to program it and I could learn a bit, too. That way, he had the knowledge when he participated in those activities at school. Plus, a cool bonding time! #Ditchbook
A4:I like showing Ss how to upload an image in @scratch,then have the sprite travel to various locations in the image to provide a recorded message/text message that demonstrates their deeper learning about that aspect of the pic.Easy to integrate across all subjects. #DitchBook

I forgot all about our Beebots! My stu's & teachers love them! We use them in math. Students flip a simple addition card like 2+2 and stu's move Beebot to the answer on teh mat. #Ditchbook
Social Studies is a great place to work with data, which is a part of CS. It's also good to create games or animations about historical figures or events in history. Some CA missions Scratch projects from my 4th graders here https://t.co/gU7sdJoQrZ#ditchbook
