#Edchat is a hashtag, a movement—it is a weekly organized Twitter discussion of educators and people interested in education that meet virtually from all over the world. #Edchat serves as a conversation thread on Twitter and is also used for organized weekly discussions.

No school tomorrow for @olatheschools enjoy your day off. I’m in DC where it’s snowing but not ridiculously cold like it is in Kansas. Stay safe and warm!!! #edchat#ksed
The one thing that is obvious is the advanced technology we have available. Technology allows fo the classroom to be larger than the 4 walls that make the room. People from all over the country and world can now connect and learn together. #Edchat#CI2300
Quote of the Day - "knowing the words is not the same as living the meaning"
May we who teach live the meaning rather than just pass along information.

A principal's morning with bad weather &dreams about how we are going to make it through June and then a phone call! A solution! Modern learning! Alternative days of learning on 1/30&1/31 @D53BrookForest Stay safe & warm everyone! #d53learns#edtech#edchat
There are also some social norms that are a bit different and our ways of reaching students seem to be more numerous. Not really a conformity system, but trying to reach all students where they are. #edchat
Yes, there was a lot of testing in HS. However, my ES kiddos test seemingly constantly. They have district tests 5x, state tests 3x and 4th grade has an extra 5 tests each year. #Edchat
@sgthomas1973 Yep, this is where 21st century teaching can end up as 1st century teaching. Tech can still be drill and kill if we don’t change How we teach. #edchat

Could anyone provide links to independent research about the effectiveness and efficacy of iReady reading program? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Happy to hear of your favorite pro-quality examples, but also would love to see examples from teachers and/or students at all levels of learning. #eci834#edchat#edtech
I think an important 21st century advantage is that we can curate among lots of curr. choices for content, and not just one textbook. Teachers—and students—can really tailor the curr. thru tech and the Internet. #edchat
The challenge is how we can prepare students to make sense of that information and determine what's true and what's not. Teaching #medialiteracy skills can help! #edchat

School culture is the environment in which the students are learning and interacting with other students, teachers, and lessons during any given day. So, how does your school’s culture make you feel? https://t.co/Jw3yLjDvI9#edchat#teachers#education
Our field trips have become too cost-prohibitive for us to have many. Also, few Ps send in the $$$ b/c they don't "have to" pay in order for S to go. #Edchat
We are also recognizing that students learn differently. Ideas flow a bit more easily and abstract thinking is improving, but still hard to master. #edchat
Interesting issue. Some promote the flipped classroom 4 all disciplines, others suggest Math and Science. Preference? There is also the issue of the digital divide. Do all students have the opportunity to flip at home, if that is the expectation? #edchat@LanaNorton18@blairteach
Certainly the Maker Movement can be enhanced thru tech and 21st century resources. But again, pedagogy must drive the decisions so the resources are used thoughtfully. #edchat
Technology has improved creating a reference. Now, I can show students the Great Pyramids instantly with Google Earth. They can see the geography around it and why the area was well-inhabited early due to certain natural resources. #edchat

Yes. @MaryAnnReilly If everything has to be codified, then we will only use quantitative answers/scores/results, which narrows possibilities. Example: how to we assess creativity? enthusiasm? collaboration? passion for a topic? #edchat
I agree that access to technology is always an issue. Also, a lot of districts are moving away from assigning any homework, so that could be an issue as well. #edchat
True, @3DChampion Would u say that Bloom’s Taxonomy is still relevant? Or does it need to be updated for the 21st century? What about differentiated teaching? #edchat
We are also recognizing that students learn differently. Ideas flow a bit more easily and abstract thinking is improving, but still hard to master. #edchat
I think we need to update our action verbs. Concepts such as critique, evaluate, analyze, create and several others are a bit more relevant for employers. #edchat

How do you codify the skills to build community? To learn how to get along with the others in your classroom space....do we, as teachers, ever fully master these skills? And they totally matter. #edchat
Many times, inspiration is the first spark for any great idea. Help to ignite our students’ most innovative thoughts and keep them motivated to learn new things with these @TEDTalks that are great for the classroom: https://t.co/bbSy6qJSKQ#edchat
Wonderful insight @3DChampion Also the updated language helps teachers specify their objectives and helps students too. Gets into synthesis, collaboration, “ahas” #edchat

New 2-yr study & analysis shows mixed (at best) restorative practice (RP) results in Pittsburgh schools. Yet some education publications spin the study to favor RP. Read this analysis of the limits & fit of RP in school discipline. #EdLeader#EdChat#K12https://t.co/dUpUUb5tcP
You are right, agency @MaryAnnReilly is also a 21st century objective. Empowering students about their learning, how they are graded, ownership of learning, what is learned, curr. choices…they are all risks, but important teaching strategies for the 21st century. #edchat

Our motivational strategies are a bit different as well. It is a lot about building relationships, but also helping students find their niche and helping them develop strengths they may not have known about. #edchat
What are your thoughts on “How to teach?” based on what we’ve learned about how the brain learns—neuroscience in the 21st century??? Cognitive Science? #edchat
Very true, I have been doing research on the topic as well and wondered how i could be implemented. I could see students watching the videos from their phones if it engaged them at home. We might be surprised with what our ss do. #edchat
Students should be allowed/encouraged to pursue passions. But it is not a pre-requisite to learning or engagement. A liberal education depends on this. And this is HS students we're talking about. Passions change. I had a passion in HS. I don't even remember her name. #edchat

So true. Although I have some amazing relationships with a few of my teachers from the 20th century, most of them just wanted us to sit and be quiet. #edchat

Student social-emotional learning can be the key to their academic success—and success throughout their lives. This article explains why: https://t.co/8DMcvPtUxA#SEL#edchat
The only Ts with whom I still have relationships/remember fondly were ones who seemed to take interest in me as a person. Black people are rarely "seen". These Ts SAW me. #Edchat
Technology can enable teachers to get immediate feedback from students with the appropriate devices. The tricky part is developing questions that are thoughtful so the feedback is meaningful. Again, avoiding drill and kill. #edchat
I think an interesting point emerging from tonight’s #edchat is how technology can (maybe…it’s possible!!) enhance student agency, empowerment. The challenge is: will we take advantage of this possibility by merging tech with effective teaching to enhance STUDENT VOICE? #edchat
‘If we really put the student under the spotlight ... in terms of improving their outcomes or their academic needs, or social needs, or emotional needs, we really have to understand learning a bit more from their perspective.’ #edchathttps://t.co/MetNFgn9R5
