"Welcome to EdTechAfterDark! Our community was born out of discussions for a rich EdChat type gathering for those of us who are thinking about the digital edu-landscape long after the sun has gone down. For us night owls, when the clock strikes 10PM EST, you’ll find us on Twitter over at #edtechafterdark. All are welcome! Our discussions range from our philosophies about EdTech, digital best practices, and simply sharing our stories." --www.edtechafterdark.com
It takes a truly devoted person to maintain hope and perseverance. The school systems don't necessarily teach how to accomplish a goal you've set your mind to. Although good grades and strategic thinking are factors of success, they don't define a person. #edtechafterdark
Welcome to #edtechafterdark! I’ll be your host tonight alongside my bros @alexstubenbort & @MrLeonard8! Introduce yourself, location, role in edu, and favorite way to stay caffeinated!
Hi everyone! I'm Jen Haworth, from Tennessee. I'm a sophomore SPED major student at Austin Peay State University. I LOVE any sort of coffee, except for black! #edtechafterdark
Alex here from Cotrus County, FL where I serve @LecantoHigh as an AP and am 1/3 of the #edtechafterdark team... as far as favorite way to stay caffeinated? It doesn’t get much better than a black cup of joe made over a campfire in a camping percolator...

A1 Students! 💜🤩💫 tchrs do not need sts to cover curriculum, so to be successful my plans must focus on sts learning, plans with standards and formative assessments that help me focus on students #EdTechAfterDark
A1: A group of students. That’s it. At the risk of sounding pompous, teaching, at its core, requires little else than a passionate educator willing to go to great lengths to spark a love of learning and a group of students. #edtechafterdark

A1: In order to be successful in a classroom, you need a teaching strategy that allows students to express their creative ideas all the while teaching them important lessons that can be carried with them throughout their lives. #edtechafterdark
A1: I think a classroom needs open communication between the teacher and the students! Open communication lets students know we care which then motivates them. #edtechafterdark
A2 Discussion on failure shifts — sts (& tchrs) need to recognize that we can learn from our mistakes when we make them ... don’t have to fail always, but persevere when you do #EdTechAfterDark

A1. In the same way structure gives stability where leads to success into our society structure can also give teachers and students that stability and success. #edtechafterdark
A2: When I get to use Challenge Based Learning or certain projects, I do a pretty good job of using failure to learn, but day to day, not as well. Started letting students grade their own tests and not in grade book - just for learning. #edtechafterdark
#EdTechAfterDark A1. One needs to be engaged enough, child like enough, excited enough and willing enough to learn from every source that one can ...That will qualify for a successful classroom
A2:Celebrating failure leans on the archaic systems of “pass” & “fail”; attempting to turn them on their head & paint failure in a more positive light. I honestly think teacher ought to ditch the word “fail” all together & encourage kids to embrace the “process” #edtechafterdark
I think this is very true. I know reflection is completely necessary, in one of my classes today a professor covered how, as teachers, it is crucial to admit when a lesson doesn't go as planned to learn from it. #EdTechAfterDark

Hi! I make PuppetMaster - app that lets kids make animations from their arts & Crafts. am very into creativity, arts integration, #pbl, higher order thinking... hard to measure that stuff. https://t.co/0xhM2CmOXt#edtechafterdark
A2: I think failure does not need promoting but on its own can be an opportunity for teachers to make a teachable lesson. Turning negative outcomes into positive learning moments is a necessary shift. #EdTechAfterDark
A2: There is always more to be done! It's all about positive reinforcement. Teaching is giving children the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and try a new perspective.
#edtechafterdark
#EdTechAfterDark A2 . Very thought provoking question. resillience & accepting failure are things this generation does not adapt to very easily. The whole discourse is about winners, advance learners, achievers ..the narrative must shift to effort- success post reflective thought
A3: Why? I don’t know. But what I do know is that the teachers that are remembered for all the right reasons embed this type of skill in every piece of content learned by their students. Students learn because of not in spite of these “soft” skills. #edtechafterdark
A3 these skills are too challenging to measure (at least compared to MC questions of content) ... in ideal society all tchrs focus on teaching skills & content in tandem & all sts are willing to risk to learn #EdTechAfterDark
A3: There is an immense amount of pressure on students to be the best academically, and there is too much focus/weight on standardized testing. In my opinion, encouraging these skills are fundamental in SEL and growth for any student. #edtechafterdark
#EdTechAfterDark A3. That's why I like the Indian system where these are now called "lifeskills" and the IBMYP refers to them as #ATL approaches to learning: & that would lead to modify our teaching .it's time that this paradigm shift is made
A3: i think a lot of people find it really hard to measure and quantify “soft skills”. I don’t have the answers, because I do understand the need to objectively measure things but how can we measure creativity? Collaboration? Communication? #edtechafterdark
Okay, Aprajita... I’m intrigued. I actually have a trip to India planned in the summer of 2020 through @EFtours! I’m interested in seeing the education system up close. #EdTechAfterDark

Today An awesome T told ldrshp group that he was a HS drop out - T is a 2nd career (& he has a Master’s degree) ... totally makes me re-think failure! #EdTechAfterDark
I’m with you ... someone once said, we measure what we value ... you’re right? Collaboration could be through equal parts / roles ... communication through writing / discussion ... run into issues of subjectivity vs objectivity #EdTechAfterDark
A3: To gain mastery on a standard teachers look into many variables necessary for their understanding and most standards must reach a level 5 critical thinking stage. But do we need a level 5 to pass a test? #edtechafterdark
A4 AWESOME QUESTION ... some through content, yet most through modeling ... of the President walked into my space, regardless of political affiliation, I model respect for my leader so that my sts will respect my leadership #EdTechAfterDark
A4: Model compassion and acceptance towards all our students, and encourage positive teamwork. There are also free resources online that can be implemented, like the Choose Love Movement specifically for SEL. #edtechafterdark
#EdTechAfterDark A4. Tech tools and collaborative measures at various levels like @PenpalSchools@SkypeClassroom help develop an internal mind and an appropriate approach to many issues within school community. Historical topics like "segregation""colonists""slave trade" are good
Can you add a link? That movement sounds awesome ... at 9/11 Memorial they have a slogan “Love is stronger than hate” ... so meaningful! #EdTechAfterDark

A4: To heck with tolerance! Let’s teach embrace, acceptance, and reception! I “tolerate” the sound of people chewing loudly. I want more for my kids than to be tolerated; and it all starts with how I model their reception. #EdTechAfterDark

A4: I think a good way for students to learn these things is add in material over different cultures and backgrounds. Another way is being a good role model for the students and showing them how to live out these things. #edtechafterdark
A4: As teachers we see teachable opportunities but with so many other priorities in the way we lose track of these moments. We must set aside some time in the classroom to nurture those needs. #EdTechAfterDark

A5: to do so, we MUST teach from a position anchored in THEIR passions and not our own. Tap into their dreams. Teach as if your playing a supporting role in their life story and not starring in the story of your classroom lecture. #EdTechAfterDark
I think things that go unmeasured like problem solving skills and the ability to work well in teams are better predictors of future success than standardized tests.
#edtechafterdark
A5: Smart is an attribute of someone which is stagnant but to thrive is always an action to work students towards a goal. A never stop learning mentality. #EdTechAfterDark
A6 The Opportunity Myth supports this ... we address these concerns by taking risks and providing students with on-grade level tasks, high expectations, & opportunities to showcase learning in various modalities #EdTechAfterDark
#EdTechAfterDark A5. We are often told that we are preparing children for the jobs that don't exist....a world unseen and much more connected that before.the skill sets that they need are what we can impart unobtrusively to them ...they must develop those attributes
#EdTechAfterDark A6. Teach them young, start aligning teaching standards with the skill sets and develop a vertically aligned continuum which will as a system get reflected in the curriculum design, and transfer to the students by instructional planning and execution.
