Happy Tuesday everyone! Looking forward to talking about how everyone is incorporating sports into their classes. Thank you to @FANgeopolitics of @playfanschool for leading tonight's chat #worldgeochat
I just want to know when pitchers and catchers report! Baseball has been gone for far too long. I can't wait to watch my White Sox again! #worldgeochat

A1: “Sports” are one of the most relatable activities as they include all forms of competitive games where participants aim to improve skills.
School could even be referred to as a sport!
“simply put, sport is an expression of people's culture” #worldgeochat
A1 I use sports to help shape differences in culture. Also, any oddly fun sport that you can expose students to the better. https://t.co/27BNELyLbP#worldgeochat

A1: I turn less fun activities into a competition for speed and accuracy (like map skills activities once I have taught it like Lat.& Long.). Winner gets a HW Pass! I also have done map relay races- best whole class time gets bonus points for a test! #worldgeochat
A1: We use @fanschool as a supplement to our US history curriculum for current events. Also used bracket system to rank the most important people in beginning US history. #samhouston#onlyintexas#worldgeochat
A1. Not as much as I've wanted to. When intro'ing human geo this year, students had the choice to research some obscure sports from around the world and share how they affect the communities from where they originate. I learned a ton from my Ss! #worldgeochat
A1
The last 2 World Cup Cycles I've spent a lot of time talking about the issues facing South Africa & Brazil. Ss are shocked that countries w/ so many infrastructure problems can host a World Cup! #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat A1 In our 1980s class, we always show the movie “Miracle.” Most of our Ss have never been exposed to hockey but leave understanding its importance to the nation in 1980.
Kristi -World Geo T from North Dakota. Fave sport to watch: any sport my kids are playing! Fave sport to play: does twittering count as a sport? 🤪 #WorldGeoChat
A1: Since kinders are just beginning to learn the basics of sports in PE, I have only used kickball as a way to teach basic team building skills. #worldgeochat
A1 we also create football franchises in a North American city of their choice making names/logos with cultural/geographic relevance, map out stadium location, invent original stadium food, work out transportation logistics, create divisions, etc (sharing later) #worldgeochat
A1: I (unfortunately) haven't used sports in the past. Last year, I used @FANgeopolitics (with drafting and trading elements) as a way to get students motivated to catch up on current events. This year, I'm looking into a "March Madness" bracket with the #SDGs#worldgeochat
A1: Friendly competition is always fun! We compete at different levels. I definitely use @playfanschool to keep up with current events. I would like to do more with sports though. #worldgeochat
A1
The last 2 World Cup Cycles I've spent a lot of time talking about the issues facing South Africa & Brazil. Ss are shocked that countries w/ so many infrastructure problems can host a World Cup! #worldgeochat
A1 (again)
There used to be a video (yes, video) about Ireland that I showed my Ss about hurling. They were enthralled by a sport they've never seen! #worldgeochat
A1 Review baseball game, stories featuring sports stars illustrating topics we are studying, have done march madness brackets for books in my LA classes, and of course Fantasy Geopolitics! #worldgeochat
A1: When I taught geography last year we used the March Madness tournament to see where all the teams were located and learn more about the colleges. #worldgeochat
A1 olympics and World Cup being hosted in Brazil was good opportunity to look at social class, favelas, government spending on stadiums, etc #worldgeochat
A1: I used to try to do a Berlin Conference 1881 fantasy draft of African countries until I realized how unbelievably imperialist/exclusionary/and a little racist the activity was (this was in my early years are a T...) #worldgeochat
A1 - sports are great to include in cultural discussions - origins of soccer, college football as a southern regional trait, how climate dictates sport choices are just the beginning #worldgeochat
A1 have use sports several times. Use the Masters tournament. Google maps for players. History of the course. Putting machine to play while the masters is on in my classroom #worldgeochat
A1 I told my Ss that before I decide to start or bench a player on my fantasy football team I always check at least 3 different sources--1 source doesn't give the whole picture. Then I related this to the research they should do when they do projects #WorldGeoChat
A2: Nike shoes, especially Air Jordans, are a great example of both https://t.co/PqWFfxUbSu
Search "The Promise and Perils of Globalization: The Case of Nike" for some great content there.
Also listen to Macklemore's "Wings" #worldgeochat
A1 Before Christmas, we studied holidays around the world. Research can be expanded on during the Olympics. Maybe we can incorporate some of that sport and competition into brain breaks and content areas. #worldgeochat
A2 One of our favorites: Introducing students to the sport of course Landaise—BULL LEAPING, people!—is a fun way to think about ethnoarchaeology and how knowledge is transmitted across space and time. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/kgBLMOuW1P
When I taught middle school I used the current year's bracket for Ss to research the schools and plot their actual journey to the games they played #worldgeochat
A1 Also used to create a geography olympics at the end of the school year for each section to compete against each other. Events included:
Geoguessr
GoogleEarthing
Hand drawn maps from memory
Cardinal directions
Orienteering
et al...
#worldgeochat
A2 we do comparative advantage lesson and watch parts of behind the swoosh, listen to wings by Macklemore, plot out where our shoes and clothes come from #worldgeochat
I used a bracket maker online and printed it using our poster maker. I can't take credit for the bracket itself. I honestly can't remember which site I used. I laminate and reuse every unit. Then do a big bracket at the end of the year. #worldgeochat
I've used the process of sneakers in class before. How many of my students are athletes, and the shoes they use are from all over the world #worldgeochat
A1: When I taught geography last year we used the March Madness tournament to see where all the teams were located and learn more about the colleges. #worldgeochat
A2: Nike shoes, especially Air Jordans, are a great example of both https://t.co/PqWFfxUbSu
Search "The Promise and Perils of Globalization: The Case of Nike" for some great content there.
Also listen to Macklemore's "Wings" #worldgeochat
A2: Sports are a big part of Globalization. Players for professional teams of any sport can come from anywhere. I remember when the Red Sox brought on Daisuke Matsuzaka from Japan. It was neat seeing American t-shirts printed in Japanese. #worldgeochat
A2: The most recent summer olympics put the global economy under a microscope and revealed how countries develop for the games and leave other infrastructure improvements behind #worldgeochat
A2 Soccer is an excellent example of local customs becoming globally popular as a result of relocation diffusion. Also, baseball and its introduction to East Asia as a result of WWII.
A2: My students are most interested in how North and South Korea are going to make a joint hockey team and get a long. They're thoroughly confused at how close to war they are, but join hands so to speak for the Olympics. #worldgeochat
A1 I told my Ss that before I decide to start or bench a player on my fantasy football team I always check at least 3 different sources--1 source doesn't give the whole picture. Then I related this to the research they should do when they do projects #WorldGeoChat
A2: Sports intersect culture by bridging a gap when there are barriers due to language, money, etc. A soccer ball in the US and in Kenya serve the same purpose. Connections can be made between children or adults based on the sport's common purpose. #worldgeochat
A2 I love the story of WW1 soldiers in 1914 Christmas Truce playing soccer together too, so that's a deep human need for peace or rest or whatever you want to call it #worldgeochat
I visited classrooms in Methuen, MA last week where Ss were having a similar conversation. It resulted in @newsela searching for more insight into the divide between the countries #worldgeochat
A2. This year, I'm hoping to touch on how the Olympics has brought together all these nations amicably. This year is going to be great opportunity to discuss the situation/needs in the Koreas. #worldgeochat
A2 There is a book called "How Soccer Explains the World" that is a bit dated but I enjoyed the premise of how soccer fans were also divided along other geopolitical boundaries. https://t.co/MfPUVxwuGH#worldgeochat
A3 Native Alabaman @HenryLouisAaron's ambivalence as @Braves moved to Atlanta: “Returning to the South took some of the boy from Mobile out of me & replaced it with a man who was weary of the way things were. I was tired of being invisible.” #worldgeochathttps://t.co/hNPFfSmyzq
A1: When I taught geography last year we used the March Madness tournament to see where all the teams were located and learn more about the colleges. #worldgeochat
When our students were volunteering in Ecuador, soccer was such a constant. They played with kids everywhere they went. It was an immediate bonding and social experience they could share, even when there was a language barrier #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat A3 Indiana and its basketball. Starting with high schools to the college level with Indiana, Purdue, Butler etc. I think the 1986 movie “Hoosiers “ summarizes it all! Fortunate to have Brad Long, Buddy from Hoosiers, share with our Ss.
A3 Ok I've geeked out about these since I was a kid myself... some of my favorites:
Wichita State Shockers, Lansing Lugnuts, Montreal Canadiens, Crystal Palace, @Bucks (obvi), some of the ones that only make sense due to a move: Dodgers, Lakers, Jazz, etc #worldgeochat
A3: Maybe I'm biased, but Boston sports, through their history, has shown resilience, with the Boston Marathon bombings, the "curse" of the Bambino, and other underdog stories. These stories get to the grittiness of Boston #worldgeochat
A2: The most recent summer olympics put the global economy under a microscope and revealed how countries develop for the games and leave other infrastructure improvements behind #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat the political affiliation that is associated with soccer teams all around the world is fascinating. "How Soccer Explains the World" is a phenomenal book that just scratches the surface. Ultras aka crazed fans have an agenda, some fueled by political parties!
A3: My Ss don't understand the global hype of soccer until we talk about it in context of poverty and the inexpensive nature of soccer. Then I ask why it's not more popular here...Really makes them think. Why is football (more violent sport) so popular? #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat I might be curling my toes, and doing a million other things, but I'm trying to make it to #worldgeochat tonight. I'm just late. Didn't hear the whistle. #WorldGeoSports
#worldgeochat the political affiliation that is associated with soccer teams all around the world is fascinating. "How Soccer Explains the World" is a phenomenal book that just scratches the surface. Ultras aka crazed fans have an agenda, some fueled by political parties!
A3. While I'm not a soccer fan, I love the worldwide engagement in the sport. It brings out tremendous passion! In the US, love the classiness of baseball. Would not say that reflects the country... lol #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat q3 sports best reflect culture of where they're played... Hockey is always good. For Canada, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia.... #nevermind#next
A2: I think it is interesting for Ss to see how people coming from different areas can still communicate and interact w/ each other w/o necessarily speaking the same language. It neat to see how sports can bond people & bring people together-just like the Olympics! #worldgeochat
Exactly! We just talked about that this week!! My Ss were so interested in that. I can't wait to see how this unfolds with the Olympics and talk with Ss about it. #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat q3 In Austin, we use to have the Ice Bats (hockey team). https://t.co/89JSSarQAi They were awesome! (And yes the link is French, b/c if you're using wiki, then you shouldn't do it in your native language and this one popped up first)
A3 I wrote my History thesis on the professionalism of soccer in Victorian England and the shift in mindset of the working class corresponding with changes in labor. Idea struck when prof mentioned Crystal Palace and I was like, "you mean the Premiere League team?" #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat a4 favorite lessons from sports. Owens is always a classic. So much about courage, historical perception, accuracy. I also like the 1968 Olympics.
Q4 - Well sometimes the sport is entirely geo-centric, but can reflect social change. I HIGHLY recommend this: https://t.co/XGb0ic1FYo#worldgeochat
DISCLAIMER - DO NOT USE IN CLASS.
A3: Maybe I'm biased, but Boston sports, through their history, has shown resilience, with the Boston Marathon bombings, the "curse" of the Bambino, and other underdog stories. These stories get to the grittiness of Boston #worldgeochat
A4 I love using the film Invictus when introducing centripetal forces and then continue them when talking about Apartheid and the rise of the multinational state of South Africa. #worldgeochat there's even a test question about it for tomorrow's class test (shhhh)
A3: My Ss don't understand the global hype of soccer until we talk about it in context of poverty and the inexpensive nature of soccer. Then I ask why it's not more popular here...Really makes them think. Why is football (more violent sport) so popular? #worldgeochat
A4 geography: @NYTSports has a truly spectacular graphic that forces students to think about space in a radically new way. We used it for our study guide here. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/4noK9ulB6R
A4: The integration of baseball provides great conversation. Jackie Robinson is not a familiar name to my Ss and they are mystified when they learn that he wasn't allowed to play. #worldgeochat
A4
I've never done it, but as I'm thinking about this chat, the actual geography of the field, pitch, court, etc. You could make a great connection about the physical locations in a game/match/etc to geography!
#worldgeochat
Great idea! I also use movies to to tie in sports as well, such as clips from Rocky, Miracle on Ice. Does anyone have any more that they use? #worldgeochat
A4 I love using the film Invictus when introducing centripetal forces and then continue them when talking about Apartheid and the rise of the multinational state of South Africa. #worldgeochat there's even a test question about it for tomorrow's class test (shhhh)
It also gives some insight into other things that are going on in the country and a great way to see any bias or propaganda. It is a great piece to study about the period it was produced in. #worldgeochat
Dear #worldgeochat,
Tonight's topic is awesome and I am so annoyed to miss it! I will read # tomorrow! Thanks for inspiring me as I teach Human Geo for the 1st time next semester!
(PS Eric from MN, 9-12 high school ALC Social Studies, and always #ALCproud!)
I used this mini doc about a local soccer team made up of refugees and new immigrants as part of our migration unit this week https://t.co/uYdHatN5jH#worldgeochat
#worldgeochat a3 Tonga Skiers!!! Seriously... Pita Taufatofua makes the grade. https://t.co/GgHbD6Vzu3 And check out his go-fund me. You really learn about how attitude projects a culture.
#worldgeochat a4 favorite lessons from sports. Owens is always a classic. So much about courage, historical perception, accuracy. I also like the 1968 Olympics.
A4: I don't have much I can connect in beginning US History but I relate sooooo much to football references bc my athletes "get it". American Revolution in football terminology. Offense and defense. Underdogs vs picked favorite. Strategy as football plays, etc. #worldgeochat
The divisions and conferences in sports are built in geography lessons. Grouping everything by region. Here in Big Ten country, they're like "Rutgers is in New Jersey? Why are they in our conference?" #worldgeochat
A4: I like to point out to S’s that “General Winter” can sometimes be an unofficial player in helping teams who are used playing in the cold, win. “General Winter” defeated Napoleon, the Nazis, and whoever it was the Patriots played when it snowed. #worldgeochat
So true! I never realized how much I use sports terms to describe things like that. It is a great way to connect with Ss. Happy to find someone who also does that! :) haha #worldgeochat
A4
I've never done it, but as I'm thinking about this chat, the actual geography of the field, pitch, court, etc. You could make a great connection about the physical locations in a game/match/etc to geography!
#worldgeochat
A5: I'm actually looking to have students be participants in a @PenpalSchools project about the Olympics, where they will receive pen pals from around the world. I'm also looking 2 do @FANgeopolitics's Olympic Challenge tomorrow, looking at trends and current events #worldgeochat
In reply to
@FANgeopolitics, @PenpalSchools, @FANgeopolitics
A5 - The North and South Korea geopolitical drama is very compelling. But you could also emphasize immigration, development, climate, elevation, economics, gender equality, etc. #worldgeochat
A5: I am looking forward to South Korea’s opening ceremony. I like for S’s to analyze how the host country represents itself- it a great showcase of national identity, and talent. I also like for S’s to see all the different nations participating, #worldgeochat
A5
The simple answer is to talk about North & South Korea. There was a great NYT Daily Podcast last week about the 88 Olympics and how NK used terror to threaten the games. Fascinating!
#worldgeochat
#worldgeochat A5. Obviously the two Koreas coming together is a big story. Follows the meaning of the Olympic spirit to compete on the field and put down the arms. Great chance to discuss with Ss.
A5 Turn it into a fantasy geo winter olympics game & have Ss draft countries & get points for medals (make it a sliding scale depending on country size) & points for geo facts about countries drafted #worldgeochat
I'm going to have students researching sports, tracking medals, the stories of athletes, etc. I also want them to calculate out the cost of being able to attend!
#worldgeochat
A5: My students told me that the Winter Olympics is for "white" people. It spurred a deep discussion and eye opening research into the history of the Winter Olympics. #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat a5 using upcoming games to learn about the world. #MAPS!!!! Have a map up in the room- shade in the countries participating. Don't worry about medal counts- it's all about participation... at least at the start.
A5: Learning about the geography of the countries - what makes Sweden different than say, Jamaica? How does their geography relate to where Ss live? #worldgeochat
That sounds awesome!! What a great experience! Can't wait to hear how it goes! We are also getting ready to start with @FANgeopolitics 's Olympic Challenge too. #worldgeochat
In reply to
@SamMandeville, @FANgeopolitics, @PenpalSchools, @FANgeopolitics
A5
Another thing to do is use Physical Geography with the Winter Olympics - plot where skiing champs come from? Downhill & crosscountry. Is there is a reason that bobsledding, luge, and skeleton might come from other countries? #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat a5 We're flipping the order of units and it turns out nicely that the next unit has the Koreas. Of course it also has all of East and SE Asia as well for the 15 day unit... but... timing.
A5: I am looking forward to South Korea’s opening ceremony. I like for S’s to analyze how the host country represents itself- it a great showcase of national identity, and talent. I also like for S’s to see all the different nations participating, #worldgeochat
A4. I love to get kids to map stuff - locations of teams within leagues - and then discuss the spatial patterns created and relationship to supporter bases etc.. #worldgeochat
A5 What do the designs of the team uniforms in Day 1 festivities reflect the cultures of their countries? How might they be controversial?#worldgeochat
A5 - N and S Korea have given us much to discuss during these Olympics. my Ss always want to discuss the distribution of sports among countries, etc. #worldgeochat
A5 Obviously the Olympics Challenge through @playfanschool , but it's an opportunity to look at long rivalries of neighbors, powers, etc. Korea is a huge thing to watch, but what about some Austria vs Germany, Czechs vs Slovaks, US vs Canada, Norway/Sweden/Finland #worldgeochat
A5: as someone who has travelled to SK twice, most recently this past June, I would say that most South Koreans would say that NK reaching out is really just a short term sham to take worlds attention off of real pressing issues. Look at Perception v reality #worldgeochat
Agreed. The opening ceremonies tell a lot about the country. I still use the one from London to show the shift to the Industrial Revolution: https://t.co/BKUq7X3QN9#worldgeochat
You could even make this into a themed day or a different event each day in your class. The chat definitely has my brain churning about ways to incorporate the Olympics! #worldgeochat
A5 play "one of these things is not like the other" when there's a team from Jamaica or somewhere random and tropical, see if they notice #worldgeochat
A5: Could our students assume the identities of perspective countries and put together pitches for hosting an Olympic Games for their peers? #WorldGeoChat
A5 We had just gone over Russia when its athletes were banned. Ss were excited to hear about this country that they knew so little about before but now knew a decent about! Just going over these countries will bring a little more meaning as they watch the Olympics #WorldGeoChat
#worldgeochat Anyone know where to go to buy a Finish, Norway Korean, Russian 2018 hockey jersey. I can find USA/Canada, but stumped on the ones I really want. Texas is not hockey country. Also need curling gear... but not figure skating.
Or Russia sitting out, which my kids have some kind of weird schadenfreude for anything negative with Russia, so maybe that adds some curiosity too #worldgeochat
A6 One of our faves: Only tangentially sports-related—it’s an ad for the @NHLBruins—this is a great way to integrate sports, poetry, and media literacy. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/KicHHUi9jH
And the costs of putting the games on. Losses undertaken by hosts, (Brazil) reuse or not of venues. All great to have students look at. Also, where would the best places to host an olympics that haven’t already. Student research opportunity. #worldgeochat
A6: In my Europe Unit we become barbarians, and we invade Europe to take land. We have a medieval tournaments and fight (a.k.a. Play rock, paper, scissors- single elimination procedure) until we have our winner. It's kinda sports but fun. #worldgeochat
A6: Specifically if you're playing #fantasygeopolitics through @playfanschool I cannot recommend a "golf league" enough where low score wins. 2 kids and another teacher are doing a side league with me and it's eye opening for the low scoring countries #worldgeochat
A6: Always love getting students to use Central Pmace Theory to figure out where new sports franchises should locate. Both major and minor league. #worldgeochat
A6 - It's not directly connected to the sporting events, but food consumed at ballparks around the country is very telling about a region!
#worldgeochat
A6 The @NCSSNetwork journal, Social Education, Sept. 2017 had a special issue on teaching social studies & sports. Some of these articles are free to non-members (I think) https://t.co/WnC4EV2OTq#worldgeochat
A6: Specifically if you're playing #fantasygeopolitics through @playfanschool I cannot recommend a "golf league" enough where low score wins. 2 kids and another teacher are doing a side league with me and it's eye opening for the low scoring countries #worldgeochat
A6 I can't share them right now because it doesn't go through a link, but I have basketball, Foootball and olympic themed templates for SMARTnotebook software I use for review sometimes #worldgeochat
A6: If you don't have a Nerf hoop and several small basketballs in your classroom, do yourself a favor and go get one NOW. Infinite game possibilities or just for fun #worldgeochat
Because sports were literally invented by people in power to us all from killing each other (and them). #worldgeochat
"People and Play: A History of Sport" is fascinating read.
NFL concussion issue probably closest relation to your comment though.
A6: Have you guys ever debated the ethics of the Olympics? Should countries want to host them? What should be done about cheating? Etc... #WorldGeoChat
A6 I don't have resources, but love the ideas! My 6th grade WH is finishing ancient Greece during the Olympics and I'd love to integrate some Olympic-themed assessment! #WorldGeoChat
The last time I did was when Chicago was in the mix for the 2016 Summer Games. So many Ss thought it would be great until they got to really thinking through what it would mean to the city for years to come! #worldgeochat
A6 Also set up a students vs staff basketball or volleyball game after your school's season. They are literally the days I look forward to more than anything else #worldgeochat
Certainly the concussion issue is related to ideas in Hunger Games, but also this week's powerful testimony by the 100+ women gymnasts abused by Larry Nassar, and the collusion of University and Olympic officials to protect him over the decades. #worldgeochat
That's fine. I just want you to know how much the rest of the world hate the Patriots. They are the Yankees of the NFL, just with less classy uniforms. #worldgeochat
Q7: Any other questions or needs related to sports or the upcoming Olympic Games that the @playfanschool team can help you out with? We hope you’re joining us to compete for global competence (and fantastic prizes) in https://t.co/SylnqTqygK! 🏅
#worldgeochat 🏅
A6: No resources to share, but I have loved learning how older grades integrate these topics into their teaching. It has given me some ideas that I could potentially "water down" to meet the needs of my young learners #worldgeochat

#worldgeochat 🏅
One of my students went to Beijing last Summer and said both the Bird Nest and the Ice Cube (I think that's what the pool was called) were in a terrible state! #worldgeochat
I can't thank @FANgeopolitics enough for hosting such a fast paced chat that will no doubt benefit my students in the near future! This was AWESOME! #worldgeochat
