A2 So, the challenge is trying to make it more engaging without diluting the academic rigour of it!

I think it's true for all HaSS subjects. Supported by colleagues yes, but we had 2/9 HSIE staff geo trained

#HASSchat
MrMCimino

Apr 27 @ 5:33 AM EDT
A4 Geography prepares Ss for the future in a number of ways: climate change, demographics, natural disasters, food security

A4. Geography roots all other knowledge to the earth and ethical human conduct. A vital discipline in the current epoch

Q5 How do you integrate literacy and numeracy in Geography?
#HASSchat
MrMCimino

Apr 27 @ 5:42 AM EDT
A5 The numeracy aspect comes from the geo skills: weather, scale, etc
#HASSchat
MrMCimino

Apr 27 @ 5:43 AM EDT
A5 With literacy, I try and integrate narrative/texts. Depends on the unit as well. Some are more conducive than others

A5 I do an empathy task to teach the refugee experience: Ss write a life story in their shoes.
#HASSchat
DrNomyn
Apr 27 @ 5:45 AM EDT
I talk to my primary psts about numeracy being more than numbers. Shapes, the trajectory of the sun etc, geo is full of numeracy
#HASSchat
DrNomyn
Apr 27 @ 5:46 AM EDT
A5. Numeracy is spatial awareness too. A key skill that geography specialises in
#HASSchat
DrNomyn
Apr 27 @ 5:47 AM EDT
Picture books are great for empathy and a great literacy activity too

Geo is great for the multiliteracies we need to interpret our world. Digital geographies require more decoding than just words
