A1. differentiate your mindset and approach to instruction for certain Ss. Find what motivates them, wrap the curriculum around it
A1: In the past I've tried relating it to something that they are interested in
A1) Incorporate their interests & strengths into their learning - give them voice and choice
I love this! Start small and build. Support them to find their strengths. https://t.co/wzP4HUctXq

Agreed! This is key for a new teacher to know. :) https://t.co/MLUBn7UFkf
A:1 personalize the learning experience to meet the strengths of the students. Gotta know your students.

There you go...systems. We need to support new teachers to do this with their Ss! https://t.co/J0RRAO4J7I
A1: Help them identify their strengths first. Help them develop systems to get the work done.
Great start ever asked them, does this relate to anything you already know or have experienced
great point Jen! Also important to not overwhelm Ss with workload. Slowly build their stamina
Yes. This. The reward is student learning! Teachers and Students win . https://t.co/Q3Rq7KxQEH

Hi! A UWP student here! Studying elementary education & can't wait to learn from twitter tonight!

Great quote!! We want knowledge acquisition & deep learning to come from the engagement & participation. https://t.co/pfZaUp86ZQ
Prioritize engagement and participation over knowledge acquisition - Barab and Roth
Create a relationship with every student to learn their strengths and have lessons that let them use it
A1: make the assignments in such a way that each student can tailor an aspect of it to meet their interests.
Need to take the time to get to know your Ss & build a relationship with them- you do this & they will move mountains for you!
Brian from Indiana here. Administrator in two elementary schools. Glad to participate tonight!
So amazing to see such powerful responses that all our New Teachers can benefit from.

A1: Tailor your lessons to include some of their special talents. Get them interested in sharing them on their own.
A1 Form relationships with every student so you learn their strengths, then let them act on their strengths
=>>>Q2 In what ways does a student’s lack of motivation result from the way assignments are structured? Can we change this?
Apologies!! My Questions in the image are out of order! lol
A1: allow for choice. With choice comes ownership...works with adults and kids.
I've experienced this in the past with a student. He really liked the Titanic so relating to that helped him
Relevance - Ss need to connect the learning to life
A2 lessons must be engaging and driven by the students. Include real world connection and just provide direction.
A2: when Ss have a voice & choice in their learning they become engaged w/passion projects. They R given permission to use strengths
A2. We have to see that it is up to us to engage the S. We have to find ways for Ss to demonstrate proficiency.
A2: My oldest son had ADHD. Not motivated at all to do work. He needed to move! It was SO out of alignment with his learning style.
Relevancy is important, too. Ss need to see how what they're learning relates to their lives. https://t.co/j7cuxkceQp
A2 If there's no choice in the assignment, the only motivation is to get done. Provide choice and they will share t… https://t.co/Uxyh8r97kI
A2: The structure has a lot to do with engagement. The more authentic the better for the learner
A2 - If the Ss don't connect to the assignment- they won't care - just jumping through hoops - need to connect it to them
A2 Typically it is an I say, You do proposition, Does that work to motivate many? https://t.co/16Fb3doCHs
=>>>Q2 In what ways does a student’s lack of motivation result from the way assignments are structured? Can we change this?
exactly, Sarah ! Couldn't have said it better
Amen!! So important for all our kids but especially those who struggle! https://t.co/bD9U7wQli2
A2: when Ss have a voice & choice in their learning they become engaged w/passion projects. They R given permission to use strengths
A2: assignments must be meaningful and developmentally appropriate for each student. One assignment does not fit all learners
So honest and so true! Our new teachers need to be able to seek this with knowledge & support. https://t.co/OjB7tONby5
A2. We have to see that it is up to us to engage the S. We have to find ways for Ss to demonstrate proficiency.
I'm a little late but I'm here Tim Kidd-Glass student-athlete at NC-State
Current question to a T, if you want them to have experience with formal debate, do you have to choose their debate topic?
A2 Make assignments authentic and engaging..find a way for students to connect it with their interests
Oh yes! And this is hard to do, right? But so important! https://t.co/8DKMqjTwrf
A2: assignments must be meaningful and developmentally appropriate for each student. One assignment does not fit all learners
A2: so many great responses. They all basically say we need to move toward & The real challenge is to Ts
So thoughtful and important. Amen! https://t.co/XsBBnGUxcu
A2 Make assignments authentic and engaging..find a way for students to connect it with their interests
Get creative and cut down on worksheets. Incorporate oral langauage, movement, creativity, human interaction, music, and PLAY!
Variety is such an important design element!
A2: create assignments that are beyond WS. Get them up and active!
A2: Ts have to get comfortable giving up control & allowing Ss to take ownership over their own learning... https://t.co/Fa2655HABr
A1: allow for choice. With choice comes ownership...works with adults and kids.
We need Ts, especially new ones, to challenge the status quo & connect the content w/ Ss & engage Ss with authentic tasks
Awesome support you all. I am honored for all the goodness. Let's get ready for Q3 in 1 minute! https://t.co/RVonkPxOzJ
This includes HW! (I see Ts who work hard at differentiating a lesson, but HW assignments are all same)
A2: Stop the drill & kill. Get Ss creating instead of regurgitating.
https://t.co/eNnePkVkWP
This includes HW! (I see Ts who work hard at differentiating a lesson, but HW assignments are all same)
I luv U but some drill & kill is needed 😎 https://t.co/j1NEMCmVZx
A2: Stop the drill & kill. Get Ss creating instead of regurgitating.
A3) Grades can signal an end 2 that learning - If the skill isn't mastered, need to be able to go back & learn it & change the grade
A3: Letter grades R meaningless to many Ss & create extrinsic motivation. Use Standards Based Grading & Learning loaded w/ Feedback
A3: As a new Kinder T I was REALLY wrapped up in rewards. Over time I learned to balance this with other support but it wasn't easy.
A3 Rewards/grades might not be the extrinsic motivators to keep the kids hooked on learning. Foster the love of learning instead.
A3 rewards & competitions have a place at least until a culture of greatness & confidence is built. Greatness is a learned behavior.
A3. With our most challenging Ss. Grades take a punitive tone. This results in only pushing these Ss further away from engagement
There you go! This is a tough one, right? But needs to be discussed to give new teachers support! https://t.co/P5L69YWgyJ
A3 Rewards/grades might not be the extrinsic motivators to keep the kids hooked on learning. Foster the love of learning instead.
Zeros don't motivate anyone except those who are already self-motivated. https://t.co/oFwkaNbCOs
A3 Rewards/grades might not be the extrinsic motivators to keep the kids hooked on learning. Foster the love of learning instead.
I have to agree...so providing other supports is key. :)
A3: I can live with occasional awards, but rewards create negative environments. Ss competing & cheating for rewards
A3: Model the excitement & passion in learning something new, show the accomplishment, & celebrate even the smallest successes!
A3: Those don't apply to their intrinsic motivation. I think you need to find what motivates them intrinsically which can be tough
or treat grades as a true measurement of proficiency. Refusal shouldn't equate to failure. We have not engaged them
A1. Build relationships with Ss to understand Ss strengths. Once you know their strength you can design LPs to build Ss efficacy.
A3 Ss who lack intrinsic motivation have rarely felt the success of good grades. A cycle Ts can break by rewarding smaller goals.
Hello! I was not sure you were joining us but thanks so much for being here. :)
Ss driven by knowledge, not grades = recognized for persistence and engagement. Motivation = support the process, not only product
We don't give teachers grades. We give them feedback. The same should be true for our kids.
A3: not all Ss are motivated by good grades. We need to motivate by showing them the new skills they can apply to everday life!
. I couldn't agree more Jay, I never expected that answer from a kid, but glad we asked the question
A3: Ss can live with making mistakes when we provide the feedback & support to not make them again
Q4. When does a student’s behavior warrant more intervention than a teacher can give on his/her own? https://t.co/BWvS1Le88Y
A3: I think it is important to teach students that it is okay to make mistakes, but don't let a mistake get in the way of success.
A2 The questions I ponder are: what are we doing to engage and motivate students? Why is student disinterested?
Q4 is a good one for all the Admin that are here tonight!! Woot! Would love to see your responses!
A4 Whenever the behavior is taking away from the learning of their classmates.
Hello Friend! Hope you are well!!
A4. Our most challenging Ss require more than the effort of a teacher. It has to be the collective effort of stakeholders
We need to teach Ss that a mistake is a gateway to a learning & growing opportunity - take advantage of it
A4: always support the student but when it becomes harmful towards yourself or your classroom its okay to get help.
I'm great! Tom is a good friend! Glad you've connected.
A4: when a student's behavior creates a distraction to other students learning or when the behavior becomes dangerous or unsafe
Ok...love this honest answer. It reflects your philosophy...very supportive.
Awesome! This is such a great resource of ideas for new T's to see. https://t.co/d0szGST5pj
Yes! Behavior that disrupts the learning for others warrants intervention. Use peer mediators, counselors, etc to h… https://t.co/YpYyPit0Yn
A4: when the behavior leads to an unsafe learning environment or creates an environment that's impossible to learn in.
A4: We also have a social worker on staff. We are very lucky to have her!
A4: I don't always remove immediately, sometimes I just sit nearby, sometimes just tutor & help support the learning
A4 after reteacting, small group, whole group, peer assisting, & tutoring- then seek assistance from the team.
Once a Ss behavior begins to sacrifice the learning of other Ss.. outside intervention becomes necessary.
A4) When the T has built a relationship with the S AND P & has tried mult strats - then if class is disrupted or endangered it time
A4: When a T has nothing left in their toolbox, time to ask for support. Never give behavioral consequence for an academic concern.
A4: sometimes the student doesn't know how to handle struggle w/ learning. Their behavior is a cry for help.
Wow!! Now that's a dream come true that I never had in my career as an admin. :)
Yes! It's not a sign of weakness to ask for help. https://t.co/HlcS1tE5YY
A4: When a T has nothing left in their toolbox, time to ask for support. Never give behavioral consequence for an academic concern.
A4 if a student is NOT learning, it requires intervention by your support team, including RtI team, counselors. Address all needs
I would agree, but there are some Ts that give up way to quickly & make it more disruptive themselves
Hey, ! Join and I for on Tuesday, October 11th at 7CST. We'll be talking about working with support staff.
