Thank you for visiting #ksedchat. We welcome all educators to our chat that runs Mondays at 8 p.m. Central. Though many of our educators have their homes in Kansas, all teachers are welcome to pop in and join in on the learning.

No gif. Have to share a video of a former student winning the Crawford County Spelling Bee today! She has been competing in this for 6 years and today was the day she won!!

A1 we talked about this at PD today - for being a small community we help a lot with winter/back to school needs but don't really connect on the needs locally of our graduates #ksedchat
A1: Frontenac is an amazing community! We are blessed to have tremendous support for the school. If it is for the kids, everyone is on board. #ksedchat
The communities in which I work have many strengths, but the best is that they want schools to succeed. Having their support is monumental. When we win, they win. When they win, we win. #ksedchat
A1: From what I've noticed the community is very supportive of all the schools in the district. I have not noticed many weaknesses within the community which is nice to see! #ksedchat
A1: We have a strong connection to the kids in our community, but I think we could do a better job connecting with the families in our community. #ksedchat
Christ the King is located in Wichita, but being in the @WichitaDiocese gives us great support from our parish! The parishioners are a great support to the students and all we do at the school. #ksedchat
A1: Our community is very helpful and eager to be a part of getting supplies and things teachers need. They are supportive to show student work and provide field trip opportunities. #ksedchat
A1: Strong identify in the school our students attend with a community that wants to support students and educators
We struggle with how to communicate and engage the community. #ksedchat

A1-We’rer really working on engaging the community in showcasing careers. The kids really like it and our counselor has found a lot of cool careers. #ksedchat
A1: Salina community has always supported our boys and the job they do for the community. It's too bad we won't get a chance to do that after this year. In respect to our own campus community, we struggle with communication at times #ksedchat
A1b: I would like to see my class and other classes find ways to use the many experts in our communities more for PBL and to think of even more ways to help the community. #ksedchat
A2: By having the support of the parish our kiddos get to go to school and learn what they do (we are a stewardship based diocese; so funding from the parishioners allows for students to go to school for the price they do). #ksedchat
A2: Community relationships means more people advocating for kids! The support and advocacy for the students is the most important piece of communal involvement IMO! #ksedchat
A2: Interested to see what others think. I don't want to add more to educators plate.
Perhaps we take time during the first of the year to go say hi to our students at their place with a buddy? Elementary schools have done this and wonder how much it helps #ksedchat
We are working on a list that the school community and parents can share showing what they are an expert in. We hope to have more opportunities from this. #ksedchat
A2: Being a transient population we need to share w/ Ss & families what community resources are available. We did this at our elem. school by hosting a community fair for families to attend which also brought our school community together #ksedchat
A1) Our community loves its history, and pride is often a wonderful thing. Sometimes, I worry it can stifle change, and some change is needed growth. #ksedchat
A2 the mission of @circleusd375 starts with “in partnership with our communities...” I know that I could do more outreach to businesses but right now our relationship building is involving parents as much as possible as guest speakers and involving them in SITE council #ksedchat
A2: Our entire board of directors is made up of community volunteers. We've had other members partner with the school to provide opportunities the boys wouldn't have otherwise. And if we're talking in the class w/SS, it's EVERYTHING #ksedchat
A2) A lot of our kids will stay in the community. Good for them to know what’s out there for them if they stay, and good for community to tell the kids what the norms are for adult members of the local (to either adopt or challenge by the student, as appropriate). #ksedchat
A2: The community connection is vital!! That is the community that will support and make connections with our kids. We should be partners!! They are the stake holders!! What happens with education will depend on this relationship. Students need to be connected. #ksedchat
A2 We are actually having a career day in our elementary coming up and ended up with too many volunteers to talk to kids. It was a great problem to have!!! #ksedchat
Q3: building relationships start small. I partner with a high school class rondo biology projects. How do you ornxoils you partner with other grades/schools? #ksedchat
A1. Our community is pretty amazing. However, I see a disconnect with the community in regard to the movement toward trauma-sensitive schools. There seems to be a lot of "we did it this way and I turned out fine..." #ksedchat
A3 Its hard to do. We are just so spread out. Several teachers have used Flipgrid and Skype for pen pal projects so tech has really helped there. #ksedchat
A3: I just moved to the middle level at semester so I don't know how I would or if they do in other areas of my building. However, we did combine the PD day with both middle schools today #ksedchat
A3: Being a diocesan school we build relationships with other Catholic Schools in the diocese and we feed into Bishop Carroll Catholic High School. We have Ss from Carroll, that want to be teachers, come in and help in the classrooms; through a class they are taking. #ksedchat
A3: We partnered with Geometry students from AHS when we were building our Gingerbread Community structures. It was a great collaboration! The Spanish classes from AHS also shared their books they wrote and translated them for us. Connections!! So worth it! #ksedchat
A3 A future project I’d like to do is for seventh graders to publish a science novel for elementary schools so when they get to me they have a better understanding and knowing that science is more than dissections, labs, and explosions #scitlap#NGSSchat#ksedchat
A3b: some word of caution on relationships. Remember we are professionals with requirements from the State of Kansas.
We have to build relationships with a clear boundary for students. #ksedchat.
Q3: building relationships start small. I partner with a high school class rondo biology projects. How do you ornxoils you partner with other grades/schools? #ksedchat
A3: We partnered with Salina VoTech and KSU of Salina to give students dual-credit opportunities and gain training/certification for future jobs. Awesome to see them succeed #ksedchat
A3: Our entire district, Pre-K through 12, is in one building. We do lots of activities together. Checkout out high school band getting our house rally fired up! #ksedchat
A3b: I know that middle school math students are helping with some of our 5th grade students that are ready for more math challenge. Great way to partner and personalize learning. #ksedchat
A3a: I worked with my seniors to show their data to the community during a community forum to help educate the community on the elections importance .
The data was on issues that students saw as important topics in the election.
A4: Look for authentic ways for the conversations to happen.
-County Clerk for seniors to register to vote.
-Vist to the Kansas State House to meet with elected officials. Can arrange for those elected officials to visit.
#ksedchat
A4-Community on a larger scale where we’ve connected with @Sharks4Kids through live Google Hangouts. Bringing in community readers for #ReadAcrossAmerica week. #ksedchat
A4: We had the mayor of Andover come and share before we built our gingerbread community. So much great history! We Skype with scientists, authors, zoos, experts, and we do global collaboration projects. Even our @go2Science program takes us places. #ksedchat
A4 For my first unit on safety an officer, construction worker, the head of transportation and head custodian were invited to speak about safety in the work force #ksedchat
A4: I admit, I wanted to, but I failed in my planning, especially in my Consumer Math class. I had connections to tax ppl, car sales ppl, and others. Just didn't happen, but I will readjust and prep for things in the future #ksedchat
A4 We are really lucky to have a junior firefighter program and DARE at our school as well. We have done the Starbase program and McConnell in the past and hope to attend again soon! #ksedchat
A3: Right now I have a student from the high school who is teaching a coding club after school on Tuesdays. I can't take credit for it though. He asked if he could do it, and I just said yes. #ksedchat
A2. Building those bridges and relationships is vital to our students' future, to the community, and to teachers. We need each other. Students also need to learn those nuances of respect in relation to the community. #ksedchat
A4: We do exploration days once or twice a quarter and many of those involve guests coming in and sharing new experiences with students. We've had the Army run a two hour bootcamp, kids from the high school run a science lab, and professional athletes share. #ksedchat
A4b: We connect with @EmpaticoOrg and we do lots of #mysterskype. We have 29 more states until we reach all 50! Yes! @LitProfSuz We love connecting with your students!! #ksedchat
A5 Not my classroom but our school does a food drive and 12 Days of Christmas type donations. All of the food and donations stay in our community. #ksedchat
A5 Honestly have not started one...yet, but I’d love for Ss to seek out a problem or issue that affects the communities we are in and develop an investigation on how to try and resolve it or make a system more efficient #ksedchat
A5-Our counselor organizes a Starside Cares Day each year. We’ve planted flowers, pulled weeds at a park, washed fire trucks, and every Christmas send cards to the troops. #ksedchat
A3. I have not connected yet with other schools, but I have a connection with a teacher at the high school and I would love to see what it would look like to make some connections with my firsties and her Ss. #ksedchat
A5: We did special cards for a local nursing home and walked the halls sharing our cards and costumes at Halloween. Our third grade teachers have done kindness rocks and care packages for our police. We collected things for the children's home and food bank. #ksedchat
A5: Our kids always used to volunteer to read to the preschool kids across the street, and that disappeared this year. If we were around again next year, I'd look for other opportunities to start that again #ksedchat
A6: At one middle school I taught at our Key Club sponsored a highway for clean up. Another school, our NHS organized a health fair and invited local organizations and health related groups to have a booth. #ksedchat
A4: Our kindergarten teacher @Woods1stgrade had her students draw creative monsters and the AMS students sewed monsters based on their design!! Adorable!! #ksedchat
A4. In my classroom, community members come in to read with students, I had a veteran come in to talk about their service, and parents are invited in for special presentations (like Kansas Day). #ksedchat
A6: so the quick and easy answer here is the typical. Newsletters, websites, emails, social media.
All passive forms of communication. The more lasting is face to face communication.
Community is a huge part of communication.
#ksedchat
A7 I will work on my local community goal, start with a school challenge or issue to resolve or make more efficient and use that as scaffolding for an end of year science project for the overall community #KSedchat
