  • BrentWolf Feb 18 @ 9:10 PM EST
The communities in which I work have many strengths, but the best is that they want schools to succeed. Having their support is monumental. When we win, they win. When they win, we win. #ksedchat

A1: From what I've noticed the community is very supportive of all the schools in the district. I have not noticed many weaknesses within the community which is nice to see! #ksedchat
  • teachlikeaninja Feb 18 @ 9:12 PM EST
A1: We have a strong connection to the kids in our community, but I think we could do a better job connecting with the families in our community. #ksedchat
  • KatherineTernes Feb 18 @ 9:12 PM EST
Christ the King is located in Wichita, but being in the @WichitaDiocese gives us great support from our parish! The parishioners are a great support to the students and all we do at the school. #ksedchat
  • Hachen2nd Feb 18 @ 9:13 PM EST

A1 Weakness is how split we are. Kids come from 4+ towns even in district over 30 miles apart. Most don't meet until middle school. #ksedchat
  • jcoswald Feb 18 @ 9:14 PM EST
A1 @circleusd375 strength is the backing of our patrons in education! An area of improvement would be a change of the status quo and embrace of change #masterychat #studentchoice #ksedchat
  • mrsdebmartin Feb 18 @ 9:14 PM EST

Q2: What does it mean to have civic engagement or develop relationships with your classroom/community #ksedchat
  • rjg_1978 Feb 18 @ 9:15 PM EST
A1: Salina community has always supported our boys and the job they do for the community. It's too bad we won't get a chance to do that after this year. In respect to our own campus community, we struggle with communication at times #ksedchat
    In reply to @JenniferMFarr
  • Hachen2nd Feb 18 @ 9:16 PM EST
A1b: I would like to see my class and other classes find ways to use the many experts in our communities more for PBL and to think of even more ways to help the community. #ksedchat
  • teachlikeaninja Feb 18 @ 9:17 PM EST
I think communication is a struggle everywhere. #ksedchat
    In reply to @rjg_1978, @JenniferMFarr
  • KatherineTernes Feb 18 @ 9:18 PM EST
A2: By having the support of the parish our kiddos get to go to school and learn what they do (we are a stewardship based diocese; so funding from the parishioners allows for students to go to school for the price they do). #ksedchat
  • MissSimpson21 Feb 18 @ 9:18 PM EST
A2: Community relationships means more people advocating for kids! The support and advocacy for the students is the most important piece of communal involvement IMO! #ksedchat
  • KSTeacherMrE Feb 18 @ 9:19 PM EST
A2: Interested to see what others think. I don't want to add more to educators plate. Perhaps we take time during the first of the year to go say hi to our students at their place with a buddy? Elementary schools have done this and wonder how much it helps #ksedchat
    • JenniferMFarr Feb 18 @ 9:15 PM EST
Q2: What does it mean to have civic engagement or develop relationships with your classroom/community #ksedchat

    In reply to @mrsdebmartin
  • manda_leigh78 Feb 18 @ 9:19 PM EST
A2: Being a transient population we need to share w/ Ss & families what community resources are available. We did this at our elem. school by hosting a community fair for families to attend which also brought our school community together #ksedchat

A1) Our community loves its history, and pride is often a wonderful thing. Sometimes, I worry it can stifle change, and some change is needed growth. #ksedchat
  • jcoswald Feb 18 @ 9:21 PM EST
A2 the mission of @circleusd375 starts with “in partnership with our communities...” I know that I could do more outreach to businesses but right now our relationship building is involving parents as much as possible as guest speakers and involving them in SITE council #ksedchat
  • rjg_1978 Feb 18 @ 9:21 PM EST
A2: Our entire board of directors is made up of community volunteers. We've had other members partner with the school to provide opportunities the boys wouldn't have otherwise. And if we're talking in the class w/SS, it's EVERYTHING #ksedchat
    In reply to @JenniferMFarr
  • mrvesco - Moderator Feb 18 @ 9:22 PM EST

A2 Strong community support is huge. Whether we like it or not, as teachers, we have a VERY public job. #ksedchat
  • Willmdunn Feb 18 @ 9:23 PM EST
A2) A lot of our kids will stay in the community. Good for them to know what’s out there for them if they stay, and good for community to tell the kids what the norms are for adult members of the local (to either adopt or challenge by the student, as appropriate). #ksedchat
  • Hachen2nd Feb 18 @ 9:23 PM EST
A2: The community connection is vital!! That is the community that will support and make connections with our kids. We should be partners!! They are the stake holders!! What happens with education will depend on this relationship. Students need to be connected. #ksedchat
  • teachlikeaninja Feb 18 @ 9:24 PM EST
A2: I would love for the school to become the hub of the community. The place where families can come to find resources they need. #ksedchat
  • nkrahn Feb 18 @ 9:24 PM EST
A2 We are actually having a career day in our elementary coming up and ended up with too many volunteers to talk to kids. It was a great problem to have!!! #ksedchat

Q3: building relationships start small. I partner with a high school class rondo biology projects. How do you ornxoils you partner with other grades/schools? #ksedchat
  • chorn68 Feb 18 @ 9:26 PM EST
A1. Our community is pretty amazing. However, I see a disconnect with the community in regard to the movement toward trauma-sensitive schools. There seems to be a lot of "we did it this way and I turned out fine..." #ksedchat
  • mrsdebmartin Feb 18 @ 9:26 PM EST
A3-We’ve connected with our HS for coding, future teacher shadowing, and HS Ss teaching chemistry lessons. #ksedchat
  • teachlikeaninja Feb 18 @ 9:26 PM EST
A3: I don't do this nearly enough. We have so much diversity across the district I think we could all learn from the experiences of others. #ksedchat
  • nkrahn Feb 18 @ 9:27 PM EST
A3 Its hard to do. We are just so spread out. Several teachers have used Flipgrid and Skype for pen pal projects so tech has really helped there. #ksedchat
  • manda_leigh78 Feb 18 @ 9:27 PM EST
A3: I just moved to the middle level at semester so I don't know how I would or if they do in other areas of my building. However, we did combine the PD day with both middle schools today #ksedchat
  • KatherineTernes Feb 18 @ 9:27 PM EST
A3: Being a diocesan school we build relationships with other Catholic Schools in the diocese and we feed into Bishop Carroll Catholic High School. We have Ss from Carroll, that want to be teachers, come in and help in the classrooms; through a class they are taking. #ksedchat
  • MissSimpson21 Feb 18 @ 9:27 PM EST

  • Hachen2nd Feb 18 @ 9:28 PM EST

  • jcoswald Feb 18 @ 9:29 PM EST
A3 A future project I’d like to do is for seventh graders to publish a science novel for elementary schools so when they get to me they have a better understanding and knowing that science is more than dissections, labs, and explosions #scitlap #NGSSchat #ksedchat
  • KSTeacherMrE Feb 18 @ 9:30 PM EST
A3b: some word of caution on relationships. Remember we are professionals with requirements from the State of Kansas. We have to build relationships with a clear boundary for students. #ksedchat.

A3a: I worked with my seniors to show their data to the community during a community forum to help educate the community on the elections importance . The data was on issues that students saw as important topics in the election.
  • JenniferMFarr Feb 18 @ 9:33 PM EST
Q4: sometimes an easy way to build relationships with the community is to@have guests come in. How does this look in your classroom? #ksedchat
  • KSTeacherMrE Feb 18 @ 9:35 PM EST
A4: Look for authentic ways for the conversations to happen. -County Clerk for seniors to register to vote. -Vist to the Kansas State House to meet with elected officials. Can arrange for those elected officials to visit. #ksedchat
