Hi, I'm Cameron! and I am studying elementary education at the University of Montana Western in Dillon Montana. I'm excited to join in tonight! #MTEdchat
Kari Wardle. Teacher Ambassador for Idaho Oublic Television. Been wanting to join @NVradenburg in a chat for a while. I’ll pop in between bed time prep #MTEdchat
A1 I've been doing a lot of Iron Chef protocol from @jcorippo with my students lately and having them create the content that we teach. We've done it with vocab and students also created posters for commonly confused words. #mtedchat
Using @JonGordon11 ONE WORD challenge to have our 5th grade Ss think about area of leadership or growth to focus on. Then @Lifetouch photos and creates magic for our leaders. #mtedchat
A1: For me, working with teachers… I revamped how I utilize the EPAS Eval/Observation Protocol developed by @montanaopi I had structured their tools into a Google Docs system to provide feedback... Transitioned to Google Form offering more reflective structure. #mtedchat

A1: We designed and began building a 50 gallon fish tank. I wanted a way to study water cycles and plants. I wanted an epic museum quality piece (not there yet). Hands on. Cross both my 5th and 6th grade classes. #mtedchat

A1 When I was in the classroom my K-1 Ss worked through a self paced unit about pollinators that concluded with the class designing and building a pollinator garden #mtedchat
A1- I’m no longer in the classroom. Ts are my Ss. But I recently had a group of teachers design lesson plans centered around s local production with IdahoPTV. Doesn’t sound all the exciting but it’s innovative in my line of work. :) #MTEdchat

That's awesome! I made something similar with my students last year in photoshop, but instead they picked a character trait to describe themselves. I should get around to doing this again. #mtedchat

A2- I think one of the hardest challenges for innovation is the different learning styles of students. Innovation is great, but finding a way to innovate for each students learning preference can be difficult #MTedchat
A2 Time and resources are my biggest two. Honestly I need time to sit down and plan how to innovate and make it fit with curriculum. I feel like I could be more innovative if I had more time to plan. #mtedchat
A2: One huge barrier is that there are too many pockets of 'but this is how we do it.' that slow down and even stop progress. It is important to find ways to show the 'why'. #mtedchat
A2) Time can interfer with innovation as Ts and As sometimes push to cover rather than UNcover content with the focus there instead of focusing on the learning and the time required to deepen understanding and application. #mtedchat
A2- I think that learning to use new resources is a huge innovation. They're so many ways teachers can connect with others in order to better their own classroom #mtedchat
A2: Innovation can be challenging within the classroom because we are often so focused on delivering the content that we forget to challenge our learners on a deeper level. We can overcome this by returning to our reason for teaching: the students. #MTedchat

A2) Innovation challenges can be the differentiation between students and trying to accommodate to each students and their individual needs. To overcome some of these challenges you have to know your students cognitive styles and learning styles. #MTedchat
A2: I think that comfortability is a huge impact on innovation. Often times sticking to what we know and what works is more preferred. When we need to step out of the box. #mtedchat
A2) Overcome innovation barriers by understanding the significant impact deeper learning has on student trajectory, feelings toward school and learning...game changer! #mtedchat
#mtedchat Darren from Virginia, Instructional Coach, Podcaster/Blogger. A2: I hear you @cristama change is hard, like trying to turn a tanker on a dime. It's slow unwieldy, but it has to be if it's authentic. https://t.co/WGTSg8Hq6x
A3 I think we can help each other more. I worry when I see innovation happening in isolation. Open the door. Share your stories! Invite people to see what you are doing! #mtedchat
A3) We have to engage the students and the teacher! Once you have them engages and excited about it they will be more willing to give it a try!
#MTedchat
A3: Encouragement and support are key. We have to support our fellow teachers and students and be there when things do not turn out as planned. #MTedchat
A3: By making things visible to them, showing them what it looks like. A good book is Switch https://t.co/GrRidTYJxG my coaching PLC is using it right now. #MTedchat
A2) Use the tools necessary to enhance the learning. May take research and teaching out. @E_Sheninger just did a live broadcast tonight in which he stated, ❤️ this, something like: tech for tech sake only increases speed in which Ss fail. #mtedchat
A3- I believe that students are only going to as innovated as their teacher is. If we want students to show their innovated sides we must create an environment that supports innovation. #mtedchat
A3: We have to let the students express themselves and have them carve their own paths of education while guiding them. Giving them control would help them have innovative and creative spirits.
#MTEdchat
A3: I appreciate a system-wide approach. Innovation should be a part of the schools/systems broader vision. Leadership needs to weave it through curriculum development, prof dev, local initiatives, etc. Model and support at all levels. #mtedchat
A3: Encourage teachers and students to chase after their ideas no matter how crazy they seem. Provide opportunity for pushing ourselves outside the box. Model failure and facing challenges head on. We can't be scared to innovate. #mtedchat

A3 Teach them that it's okay to fail (both Ss and Ts). We talk about this constantly in my class. It's pretty crazy how so many of my Ss are coming into 4th grade expecting themselves to be perfect. #mtedchat

I completely agree. All stakeholders should have some active role in the process of change. It is MOST challenging if change is happening TO you, instead of with you. Develop strategies to truly show the reasons for shifts. #mtedchat

A3: I think the disconnect is when we try to be something we're not 'first'. I think, connect your passion to some learning strands. Get creative. Then tackle the innovations we're not inclined towards. You need license to do so though (or not) #mtedchat
Q4: There are innovative things happening in schools all over Montana every day! How can we share the innovative things already happening in our schools with one another as well as the larger community? #MTedchat
I agree! Just one person who stands next to you and cheers you on makes a huge difference. I have so many "partners in crime" in our #mtedchat community
Yep. If change is being done to you, it's hard to feel agency. The trick is to flip the narrative, so that you can take the reins as much as possible. #mtedchat
I think the use of social media like Twitter and Instagram can be very useful in sharing ideas with people not only in Montana, but all over the country #MTedchat
Agreed. For me, I found my network here first...becoming connected. As a new teacher, it was difficult to share out some of the things I was trying. We need a comfortable community to discuss ideas, challenges, and experiences. #mtedchat Once more confident, became easier locally
That’s a hard one. As a T I never wanted the spotlight on me. So maybe us sharing what other Ts are doing. Like point it out when our colleagues do seomthing innovative. Idk. #mtedchat
Great idea! We can do #shoutouts for one another like at #ecet2! We can tell the stories for one another if we need to. Find a friend and take turns sharing! #mtedchat

A4: Social media and blogs are great for sharing with others, but sometimes I think we forget to call the local newspapers and TV stations to share our story. I think some of our community members miss out on what's going on right down the street in their own town. #mtedchat
A3) Provide the expectation, scaffold and build creativity and innovation into the culture to make innovation and failing forward to learn the norm. #MTedchat

A4: Share your ideas to Twitter using the #mtedchat hashtag ;) Include images, videos, links and resources. The focused chat is one hour weekly, but the conversation is on-going. (Selfish plug...)

A4 Shameless plug warning: We at @MontanaPBS would love to share your photos and videos about the innovative things happening in the classroom. Share them with us and we will help you tell your story! #mtedchat
One of the things I do regularly is to "cite" my colleagues, and mention the good work they do and how it's inspired me to do my work. It's basically name dropping, but authentic and in context of something I'm working on with others. #mtedchat
One of the schools where I work has a shout out board in their staff room. I’m going to start putting shout outs to Ts doing innovative stuff on their. Thanks for the idea. #MTedchat
BTW, I think it's probably obvious, but innovation can be something in miniature. sometimes it's even more innovative to work on the small scale. #mtedchat

A4 I definitely feel most comfortable sharing on Twitter. I would love to do a pineapple chart at my school at some point, but I'm not sure how well it would be received. #mtedchat

This is such a powerful strategy. Loved being able to share great work of colleagues and support collaboration as a regional instructional coach. Many educators are doing similar things, it's fun to foster networking. Find opportunities to do that when presenting too. #mtedchat
A4) Social media is awesome for sharing and telling our story. I've found most of our parents to be on FB. Sharing with professionals through Twitter and Instagram is my preferred platform for idea heists (and shares). #mtedchat
A5: That's a fork in the road for me: Build out my room like a museum/workshop/living room, OR hire programmers and build an AR creation tool for Ss. So, I guess both... #mtedchat
A5: Would love to open up budget for edus to truly create their perfect learning environ...The classroom, the hallways, the common areas. I know this isn't a new idea in any way..but with a building that is 100 yrs, and limited funding, we do what we can...want more ;) #mtedchat
A5) Honestly, I'd want better security systems in the schools. A lot of dangerous stuff have been happening way to often, especially a lot in the pass few years. Want to keep teachers and students safe! #MTedchat
A4 Right now, I want every classroom in Montana to have a class set of either iPads or Laptops and super fast internet because I know innovation is much easier with ACCESS! #mtedchat

Speaking of Pie in the Sky, we should crowd source all the free stuff out there. I thing I might be able to run my room for free (assuming chrombooks and interent). And scissors, masking tape, cardboard, wire and batteries, and... I love free stuff, #mtedchat
A4: This might not be as much of an issue in MT, but I'd love to see some outdoor classroom development, and integration of more traditional career education (think vo-tech stuff) in with entrepreneurial education #mtedchat
A5: I would create a hybrid space that resembled a coffee shop/ workshop/science lab! Fully stocked with tools to books! ahhhh a girl can dream! #mtedchat
A5) Paint murals in every room, have age appropriate themed bathrooms centered around storybook characters, create collaborative spaces with seating and writing options, and PD from gurus in the field w/required supports and follow up. #mtedchat
A5.) I think that there are so many possibilities for students after k-12 education that are left unexplored that we as teachers should include these into our innovative examples within the classroom. I think programs like agricultural studies should be stressed. #mtedchat
