My name is Jack Dingus, I am the Defensive Coordinator and former OL Coach at Crooked Oak High School in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. I am the Co-Founder and Co-Host of the Great Monday Night #hogfbchat
A1: give me an old fashioned ISO, Trap, or maybe a power, going to run dive just to see how bad they think they are. Then...maybe the IZ...maybe...#hogfbchat
a1 #hogfbchat would depend on the alignment. If they to give you the inside trap it's all on the table. Otherwise power, belly/dive (and follow off both), buck, and esp jet sweep
A1: I love counter plus jet motion. We run a counter read (backfield flow looks like power read) and I like a inside zone reading one of the 3 techs #hogfbchat
A1: almost never ever see the bear unless we’re in goal line, but iso/Lead. We haven’t been a counter team but I could see running counter. Interested to hear replies! #hogfbchat
A1: toughest front to run against. If you can utilize the qb in the run game. That’s the time to do it. Gain an extra blocker in 10/11/12 personnel #hogfbchat
A1: I'm gonna sound like one of those meathead wing T guys but yeah, power doesn't suck against bear. I also like throwing the ball when there's a bunch of dudes in our way. #hogfbchat
A1: we would only see bear on the goal line, so zone it out since it's basically man on man anyway. Or we could be like the NFL and just run it up the middle, hate that crap #hogfbchat
A1. Gotta agree that trap is always a nice option vs a bear front for us. Also split side belly is a nice option since it takes away some of the mess to the strength. #hogfbchat
A1: My favorite is outside zone. Bear front wants to jam up the middle... Stretch should get that interior sealed off... reach or Run the DE wide... RB take 5 steps and decide reading our EMLOS block... Seal = Sideline, See his butt, cut it up.#hogfbchat
A1: not just against bear, but any inside heavy front a) Counter (Down, down, down, kick out & lead) or b) Speed Option (Make DE wrong & slow) to get ball to edge quickly #hogfbchat
A1: Even in GL/SY we spread it out, so we seldom see it anymore. In years prior we’d mostly go Power or every hogs favorite play call...just Wedge it baby! #hogfbchat
A1: Jet sweep. Outside zone. Speed option. We can still run counter or inside zone against it but it usually results in throwing a screen out the back door. #hogfbchat
A1) If the BST can cut off the 3 tech then I like pin & pull or wide zone. You lose your day teams on gap schemes like power/counter but have angles for down blocks. #hogfbchat
A1: Can be tough to run inside against a bear front I like perimeter runs quick pitch and jet sweep to soften the edges then run inside. #mtzmade#hogfbchat
A1 part 2: We rule block. I like giving them rules so no matter what crazy defense lines up across from them they know who they should block based on the defensive alignment #hogfbchat
A1 part 2. We make sure we work on our calls that week for power/ctr to get everyone on the same page blocking wise up front. Of course rep it all week vs our base stuff as well. #hogfbchat
A1b: will practice against it a few plays during each week. Lots of teams we play have it as a change-up. Always have checks when it shows. Big Under calls, etc. #hogfbchat
A1) P2) I haven’t seen bear fronts often.. come from air raid so teams don’t usually get in bear... I show it to them if a team lines up on film. Plus using @echo360 shows everything we need Friday night. #hogfbchat
Tell them to understand what we are good at and what we aren’t and how we adjust from there. If we can’t run against it be prepared to cut for days on quick passes #hogfbchat
Bring at least one TE in , run QB Kick (power with a back leading ). Or just QB POWER with back running split zone into the vacated g who pulled #hogfbchat
Power Read. With our freshman team we had some success with very wide splits and running QB lead with RB leading onto Mike. BOB everybody else. #hogfbchat
A1.5: we practice against a bear front in our pass pro. Bonus that my DC loves to bring pressure out of his 30 front all the time. So we always see Bear plus 1 #hogfbchat
A2P2: We almost never see it exclusively, but it just makes our schemes easier to block. Guys get excited when they don’t have to think and just get to fire out and get after it. #hogfbchat
A1. Stress communication between the entire unit. Have different calls for different alignments. I played on a minor pro team that saw bear every practice and we got real good at talking to each other. #hogfbchat
If we follow our rules we’ll be fine. Only thing center has to remember is no doubles against a bear. We make a domino or eagle call = all down blocks. #hogfbchat
A1: Pt. 2: we really like to stress and over emphasize our handling of both 3’s and the 0 under the chute and effectively communicate our line calls and communication Monday-Wednesday.
#hogfbchat
A1 P2: We work it all week like prepping for anything else. Big keys: work pass pro ... we work BOB scheme and full slide vs bear. Important to work on C blocking back on gap schemes, cant just fixate on nose. I teach PSG to think Nose is HIS block on gap schemes #hogfbchat
A1:P2: biggest thing I think is knowing in pass pro 5 bigs, in run identifying who we don’t want to account for, technique for me doesn’t vary much, I used to like to cut down splits to 1 ft but I have gone away from that #hogfbchat
a2 #hogfbchat sight adjust to put a hat on them every play. Cut them early and often. If they want to take the A gaps fine...who's left to take on the belly? To clean up if the jet cuts back inside?
A2: stress communication with your guys so they can recognize when it’s coming and that they are all in the same page. Rep it a ton in practice, stress footwork, technique and angles on down blocks #hogfbchat
A1 P2) If we’re going to run a lot of gap schemes spend extra time repping down blocks and using playside hand to keep DL from fighting over top. If zone work reach and cutoff #hogfbchat
A2: We line our FB behind our guard make a "rock" call keeps BS guard home and trap with FB... puts line into max protect call avoiding leakage... center weak side A...PS guard strong A #hogfbchat
A2: will employ more Gap-style runs. Have the rule to clear your gap,so guys will come down to smash whatever shows. Will practice against during week more in drills if team shows lots on film #hogfbchat
I hate to say it but the FB trap. We would call it a wide at the line and the C with both frontside G and T crash down with the backside G pulling and kicking out. #hogfbchat
If they like to show it or like to run it in certain situations try and some variation of trap by either having your guard climb to him, trap him with a guard or trap him with an H back #hogfbchat
A2) have runs where there are down blocks in order to pin the frontside, cut the backside, LBers through the OLs angles. Or run something like split zone in order to wash one side & kick the other. #hogfbchat
A2: Depends on what system you run. When we ran double wing, we salivated when teams did that! Played right into our hands - ran G-O pull scheme. All. Day.
#hogfbchat
A2: if RPO is not an option, wide trap (5 Tech) is always good. Anything to keep those interior guys blocking down down and then we can trap with H’s and lead up with the backside Tackle as well (any way we can run counter we are taking it)
#hogfbchat
Center makes an “Express” call if blitz is noticed pre-snap. All combos are off and everyone is in their track on zone, which should pick up both blitzing backers. Try to get combos on the run. Carves up blitzes when executed properly #hogfbchat
A2- assuming they are a team that does this on film, we rep the heck out of their looks in practice. Guards on downs, turns it into man v man in odd. Even front we have slide call on pp/zone and that’s the guy we’re combo’n too so with eyes up line would slide/pass off #hogfbchat
A2: We have built in RPO’s with all of our runs. We trust our zone footwork, eyes up, stay on our track, be PHYSICAL at the LOS. We have been fortunate to have great backs with great vision that see their cutback lanes. #Hogfbchat
A-2: I like zone. We should have combos eye balling gaps. I like power. We should have combos and down blocks to cover the gaps. If block like we’re taught we should be fine. #hogfbchat
A2: Against teams that like to come down the barrell like that, we just stress the "train track" mentality (trains don't turn). IZ is fine against it, everyone on their tracks and roll. If we all stay on our tracks the back has a chance. #hogfbchat
A1 Part 2: Getting your players to understand rules rather than trying to memorize a play. Trust your rules! It helps when you’ve got smart dudes up front!
#hogfbchat
We run Power against almost anything. However, when blitzing double-A Gaps we looking to use motion to see if the OLB is now in Man against a number 2 and if so, we motioning away and running outside zone and running right off tackle or checking to quick game #hogfbchat
A2) I would think you would rep that in practice and put an emphasis on playing with eyes up and expecting contact in A gap from the LBs. If you keep your eyes on your target you shouldn’t ever get surprised #hogfbchat
Q2 Outside zone. Catch them with a pop pass. Back to outside zone until they fall back to their base and stop being aggressive in the double As #Hogfbchat
Biggest thing in the run game against the blitz for my guys was communication. Our snap count helps us out with that. Our center snaps it when they are ready. #hogfbchat
A2- We will wash them on our IZ and see the cut back for our back. Can throw bubble off of it or flash fake and throw the bend where the LBs just left. #hogfbchat
Chance Hester
Special Teams Coordinator
St. Michael Baton Rouge
Special Teams Guy looking to learn more about OL play. (I’m clueless on the position)
#hogfbchat
A2: Communication is key for the OL. Picking up blitzes starts with eyes. Hard counts, freezes and tendencies. Make the defense show their hand. #hogfbchat
A2: get outside! Reduce splits by WR crack the safety and force the corner to tackle. @CoachHand said something about corners tackling that I’ll never forget #hogfbchat
A2: as a nohuddle team, we like to use our freeze call & our equivalent of "on two" to slow down A gap pressure from coming unchecked. In same vein, used a formation shift to make D check themselves. Play-wise, we like a sprint out play, as well as IZ & Counter. #hogfbchat
A2) OZ make sure that the guards know to combo off immediately to pick up the backers. We usually have an H so he’ll pick up the 1st player outside the TE. Anyone coming from the inside 1st, no one coming, go get the safety. #hogfbchat
A2: We run a lot of jet motion with our power read. The double a gap blitzes get washed down and essentially take themselves out of the play. Depending on the defenses alignment we could have our guard on a safety. #hogfbchat
A2: We wash our backside gap and then kick playside DE with a FB whamor J-block depending on formation/playcall, also like to run veer dive with inside wedge scheme #hogfbchat
A1) rep it early & often especially during short yard/goal line.
More often than not, you will get this front in defensive must have situations. #hogfbchat
A1: Part 2. I like running OT vrs bear. 90% of these we're down blocking. I place more emphasis on footwork - based on scouting rpt. e.g. if we have gap-shooter DTd, that week we focus on reach-stepping to down blk, vrs a 'hard-45' - attack step #hogfbchat
A3) Really depends on the front. I like IZ and OZ based on our rules. And it allows us to pick it up. Also like going on 2 like @Coach_Timmerman#hogfbchat
A2: Wash them all down with Power. Or Run OZ, if you can just get in the way OZ has a chance to pop because they have NO 2nd level players with 2 LBs shooting A gaps. Jet/Rocket/Toss all great as well because even if they penetrate on those plays, it doesnt matter #hogfbchat
Q3 A3 we are a heavy 2 for 2 blocking system. Working in pairs to identify who my partner and I are matching up as our 2. Doesn’t matter if blitz or staying home. We should be pre identifying who our 2for2 is and use our rules and system account for the 2 #Hogfbchat
A3. We run a 3 on 3 junk drill where we throw every combination under the sun at the center and guards. Helps them to maintain gap integrity and let’s them see all possibilities. Most teams don’t blitz against us much. Flexbone just gets a bunch in the box. #hogfbchat
A3: For the most part we just run our stuff. If they blitz off the edge, we go with our wuick hitter north and south runs. If up the middle, buck and quick pitch. #hogfbchat
a3 #hogfbchat would depend on where the blitzes are coming from. Jet/Jet trap can be nasty against blitz teams if the timing is solid. If solid rules in place blitz pick up can be simple as long as they own their angles. Also the slam series if it's in the arsenal
A3: Been getting a little more heat from teams lately but have been able to manage it with the RPO game. Blitz creates windows for it. IZ, OZ, One Back Power, name it. It's all tagged with something we can use to answer the blitz with the QB slinging it. #hogfbchat
A3: Honestly, Bubble is an extension of our run game. We're getting the ball outside in our guy's hands as fast as possible. Good luck. When you cheat, we stalk and go and hit home runs. #HogFBChat
A3: snap count is huge for blitz heavy teams, don't give them any jump. We don't see much blitz per say since there's only 1-2 LBs in box now days, more so stunts and twists. Feet can't stop moving, eyes gotta be up #hogfbchat
A3: walk through blitzes we see in film on Monday. Then drill the hell out of them Tuesday and Wednesday. As far as runs, I like Zone, power, GT counter. We get angles and our combos and down blocks are solid. We face defenses with a “flex DT” off the ball a yard too. #hogfbchat
A3: depends on what blitzes they like, if they are more of an edge pressure team then you can slip traps and ISO past rushers getting up field, if they bring it in the middle, you get them where we just talked about. IZ is good against everything if you rep enough too #hogfbchat
A2: 1st, if they’re trying to time it up, Hard Count! Followed by Toss, SpeedO (Double Option). Wouldn’t be afraid to run Power (Long Trap) either - wash both backers down & prevent the BS DL from crossing face to PS. D is down their 2nd level scrapers. #hogfbchat
A3: Love pin-pull/buck sweep vs heavy edge pressure teams. We block all of our schemes vs the run blitzes we see each week. We will be prepared. #hogfbchat
A3: The usual stuff. I think it’s more of a mindset that we have to instill in the kids. “Weather the storm,” we always say. They might get us a couple of times, but we’re going to bust one. #hogfbchat
A3: in flexbone, I really liked toss and outside veer. Moving to a pistol zone option this year, I think Inverted veer is going to be great vs the blitz happy defenses #hogfbchat
A3-Against a blitz I like zone based on your linemen’s eyes looking to the next level. If they pick them up it’s off to the races. Also, it provides RB’s a chance to make a pre-snap reads and cut backs or pressing the ball becomes even easier!!! Rep, rep, pick up!! #hogfbchat
A3: Speeding up the tempo has helped us also. Teams will give us auto pressures based on a motion or formation, because they can’t get a call in quick enough. Once we’ve picked up their auto pressure we make our adjustment. #hogfbchat
A3: Definitely IZ or Power against blitz heavy teams. But we’ll live with IZ all day. Rules are super simple because we’ll call out whose got who and we’re ramming it down your throat. #hogfbchat
A3: Pretty much same as A2. Wash it all down with power/counter. Hit the edge with OZ/Jet/Rocket/Toss. Screens too if you count that as part of your run game #hogfbchat
A3: I think a blitz pick up period is pretty common practice. So we would obviously rep the charted blitzes during that period. I feel like sprint draw can be one of the best runs to counter and over aggressive defense. Have to get those rushers in their pass lanes.
#hogfbchat
I like the Inside Zone and Fly Zone game against a blitz happy defense. You can get some big plays out of it. As long as everyone upfront keeps their eyes up and works to get distortion. #hogfbchat
A3: It would all depend where it's coming from. I love power, counter, jet sweep & inside/outside zone. So I would make those work by dressing them to get the looks I want. #hogfbchat
A3: As long as your guys know their schemes, you can run almost anything. Turns into Big on Big blocking. You’re telling me we don’t have to go chasing after LBs all night, AND they’ll come to us?! Yes please! #DownDownKick#hogfbchat
A3 if you have an IZ run scheme be sure to have a front side IZ that reads PSLB and a backside IZ that reads BSLB. Both plays look the same up front, RB reads different LB and hits based on LB plug or pursuit. #hogfbchat
A3) Zone because it just puts OL on their path and they take whatever comes and then power/counter because if the LBs blitz the gap we should pick them up with our combo blocks #hogfbchat
A3- because our base play is IZ and power.... we’d run IZ and... power vs a heavy blitz team! If it’s what we hang our hat on we’ll prepare for anything they will do! #hogfbchat
A3: (continued) We slow it down and do a lot of show and go with our team period. Kids need to be as prepared as possible with blitz teams, but don’t paralyze them by over analyzing the defense. Prepared Simplicity #hogfbchat
A3: inside blitzing team I like jet. Outside blitzing team if you can get a kick out power is awfully hard. Gap blocking is good against blitzing I've found. #hogfbchat
Really go over our rules that week and walk through their blitzes or at least their favorite ones. Make sure the kids understand who needs to be blocked and who doesn’t especially with our zone stuff. Practice hard counts every chance in practice #hogfbchat
A3: Find tendency. If not, sometimes it's best to stick with bread/butter. Do what you do. Blitz pick-up should be repped well throughout the week, then put the ball in your play makers hands. Sorry, never answered with specific plays as question asks. #hogfbchat
A3- love Buck to the edge pressure, will stay consistent with our IZ and tags off of it to get the ball behind the blitz, will also wash and hit GY CTR. Work staying on our "tracks" in practice and we will be fine. Also Screen game/ Hard Counts duh? #Hogfbchat
We saw two blitz’s heavy defenses this year one was 3-3 stack. The other was a 3-4. We ran a lot of power against the 3-3 stack and counter at the 3-4. So it depends on what we are going to see that week. Best way to prepare for the blitz is to rep it in hull everyday. #hogfbchat
A3: NO PLAY CHECK! Lol. Got the team we played in the state championship to jump 4 or 5 times on it. Most were lineman but the LB slowed their tails down. Personally like the Zone play here. Can hit a few big ones and they normally adjust. If not... #hogfbchat
A3: any down scheme where we can pick guys up in our tracks. I’ve been looking at just picking up playside backers with our down schemes and picking up backside backers with pullers. Takes care of fast fillers and blitzers. Ran it GT like that one game and worked well #hogfbchat
A3: We like power, especially when we have the guys that can wash down and take blitzers out with them; we also like quick hitting traps against blitzes. We will rep it heavy in our inside game time. #hogfbchat
A2-A3: same-same. If a D is bltz-heavy (taking away scrapers), Power blocked correctly building a wall of wash, is the blitz killer. Play action quicks up middle (TE Pop) another favorite. #hogfbchat
A3: NO PLAY CHECK! Lol. Got the team we played in the state championship to jump 4 or 5 times on it. Most were lineman but the LB slowed their tails down. Personally like the Zone play here. Can hit a few big ones and they normally adjust. If not...
#hogfbchat
A3 base run game that gets reps vs the blitz! Any scenario I think we are going to need to account for we work at - we walkthrough a lot of blitzes in down time- special teams work, prepractice, postpractice. Get a hat on a hat #hogfbchat
A3: as a mostly spread-gun team (split backs & trips), we utilized an UC tight bunch formation w/ a toss our counter from it. B/c we could get in & out if it as part of our overall no-huddle scheme, it slowed down the blitz calls (too many gaps). #hogfbchat
A3: Power, Counter, buck. I love the angles. One of the biggest runs I’ve ever called was power against a double A gap blitz. We washed them down and there was noting but grass for 89 yards. #hogfbchat
A3: we have 4 run schemes like them all againstblitzers 1)IZ, 2)OZ, 3, ISO, 4) power/counter all have ability to be rpo’s and a lot of window dressing, practice communication and eye discipline #hogfbchat
A3: vs teams that blitz, I would try to have a 5 min “Junk Period” each day in team, inside or both. Tell the defense coach to have fun, and run our base plays against it. Want them to be prepared for anything.
#hogfbchat
A3: Depends on the type of blitzing we're facing but usually power/counter is helpful, If you have the ability to stretch to the edge a nice jet sweep action can really cause teams to go back to base when mixed with an ability to run inside off of it and vice versa #hogfbchat
A3: The usual stuff. I think it’s more of a mindset that we have to instill in the kids. “Weather the storm,” we always say. They might get us a couple of times, but we’re going to bust one. #hogfbchat
We run lots of Bear Defensively, but with a hybrid type nickel so we can play more zobe coverage and have force players for out run as change up from playing so man. Outside zone has hurt us in man DBs late coming up with 2TE .#hogfbchat
A3: freeze em to slow them down, that way you still have a a good amount of your playbook. We've never ran it but the idea of a Q Iso jump pass would suuuuuck #hogfbchat
A3: film study will show where they are blitzing and what they want to accomplish and that will clear up whether we like zone or gap that week. #hogfbchat
A3(1): Best OL Coaches I’ve worked with will teach blitz pickup as a part of their progression with each concept. We always do a Blitz pickup period on Wednesdays. #hogfbchat
A3(2): Define what type of blitz patterns they’re going to bring. What is the defense trying to protect by blitzing a certain way? Zone Blitz - stop the run &/or protect weak spots in the backend. Single dogs - fit the run quicker or get added pressure on the QB. #hogfbchat
a4 #hogfbchat We spend a good period or 2 each Wednesday working on GL plays. No drills, just line up and run the plays, correcting and/or running them again as needed. At that point it's a mindset
Short yardage? Board drill. Goal line? Board drill. Haha we devote a session a week to goal line. I guess our inside run session can be considered goal line, too. #hogfbchat
A4: have to have a period every day...you play like you practice.... rep it hard...inside drill, team D, have to have looks that mirror what you may see Friday night #hogfbchat
Have absolutely done this. It was great work. They had to trust the coaching cues & track. Couldn’t “rely” on memory + made practice harder than the game. #hogfbchat
A4: Every run game drill can be used for short yardage in my opinion. All else fails work the sled over and over, working on get off and push. #hogfbchat
A3) You can blitz all you want, but we focus on blocking half the field at a time and that's only where the ball is going. The scheme will account for the guys in the area, the other blitzes don't matter
#hogfbchat
2 Back = Power. Gap double the TE and PST to BSLB. Kick out edge with FB or Sniffer Back and back block PSG & C. Pull BSG for PSLB. Hinge GET. #hogfbchat
A4: We practice it everyday. We have an Offensive period on Tuesday and a Defensive period on Wednesday. It's a competition period for running. #hogfbchat
One 10-15 minute period per week #1 O vs. #1 D. We call it Tug-O-War. Start at the 3. Score...move it back to the 5. Score...move it back to the 10, 15, 20. If the defense gets 3 consecutive stops at the 3, then they win. If the O scores from the 20, then they win. #HogFBChat
A4: we have short yardage team drill first thing on Tuesday!!! And then a short yardage inside period on Wednesday! #hogfbchat we run base offense no matter the field position
A3: Nothing takes the teeth out of an over aggressive Defense like changing the count. Cadence or Clap... Especially High school kids can't play fast when it's mixed up. #hogfbchat
In reply to
@SenorBlazer, @Coach_Ram8, @CoachDingus
A4: Wednesday is Situations. We start practice with a GL drill. 4-5 plays each hash. Later do red zone 5-6 each hash. Also work each 3rd down situation. 3rd and short, medium, long. 3 plays each hash in each scenario. #hogfbchat
A4: We didn’t spend enough time on any short yardage situations. We don’t have a specific short yardage formation, so we just stuck to what we ran. #hogfbchat
A4: We work it at least twice to three times a week. A couple periods each time. With individual drills, we work a lot of 1v1 drills with low man wins and rooting guys out who try to dive at our ankles. Combo drills rooting guys out too with a backer inserting. #hogfbchat
Usually have a 5 min goal line/short yardage period per week. Feel need more time especially since teams change up what they do down there. Always some confusion. We will work on “scoring with your man” type of drills #hogfbchat
A4) It hasn't been enough time. We are a spread team that has the common problem of GL offense. My next role, it will be a bigger point of emphasis for sure. We had great plays for down there, but we didn't have the great GL attitude we needed. #hogfbchat
A4) This is something I could probably get better at. I don't really know the best technique to combat the DL submarining us at the LOS on the GL #hogfbchat
A3: OZ, we get to watch a lot of film as a unit to see def. favorite blitzes and stunts. We work those into team/inside run. Stress “trust track” and hit aiming points. #hogfbchat
A4: We do a situational team session on Wednesdays inside the redzone starting at the 20 and moving the ball closer. Do not have any specific drills for short yardage but after some short yardage conversion issues last season we have to fix that. #mtzmade#hogfbchat
A4. End every offensive practice with it. Finish defensive practice, and again on pregame day! So important to finish the drive. Sleds and shoot work keep us low and aggressive for this situation #Hogfbchat
A4. We don't change up a whole lot on the gl, gonna run our stuff that's been working that game. Will work our qb sneak several times through out any normal game week. #hogfbchat
Not enough time! It’s good for both sides of the ball. On offense you get to run in your heavy packages that you don’t use much. Defensively you get to work on your goal one front and work on things like submarine blocks. #hogfbchat
A4- I love to start practice with a live goal line drill. Put the ball on the 7. Best on best. 1st and goal. Kids love it and it’s a pertinent situation for both sides. Like to repeat that during goal line periods and see how often we punch it in #hogfbchat
A4: During the season we'll do our goal line packages for a good ten minute period on Wednesday then brush up on it again during Thursday practice. Usually it's full team but sometimes we'll incorporate it into inside run. #hogfbchat
A4: We did devote time to 2 point conversions. We had one specific 2pt play we devoted a ton of time to. Got in a game where we scored in the fourth..called the play and won 8-7. Kids didn’t flinch, they knew they could do it! #hogfbchat
A4 cont: have a drill called 10 yard fight. Have 4 downs to drive man past goal line. One on one. Loser has pushups. Will stop it when there are stalemates for next play. #hogfbchat
A4: GL period couple times a week. Put the ball at the 10, get the Best of the Rest on D, have 4 downs to score. When possible, put something on the line: pushups, sprints, or losers carry winner pads to the locker room. #competition#hogfbchat
A4: The whole practice.
Wing-T, remember?!
But seriously...we are big on shoots and sleds. We even get our RB/WR on the sled. It helped us a lot this year. It’s all a mentality. Hard nosed bring your lunch to work. #hogfbchat
The Single Wing is a built-in goal line offense, so we don’t change a lot on the goal line. We’re going to run Power, counter, and sweep. Shocking.... I know! #hogfbchat
A4: When given the opportunity again, GL & RZ periods will be key portions of the weekly practice plan. It’s the most important field Zone, why not practice it like it is? End each possession with a kick! #hogfbchat
A4: We have a goal line period on Tues, Wed,and Thurs. We spend about 20 mins a week. As a spread team we have an under center goal line package. It’s an unbalanced power “l” set. I want to spend more time with our pass game in the red zone. Tighter windows. #hogfbchat
A4 Work 3rd Down (15 min) Goal Line on Wednesdays (15min). Low man wins, also tell my guys the goal line is a matter of will power, if you want it bad enough you will get it. #hogfbchat
A4: We have a Goal Line period on Tues & Wed after Team O about 6-7 plays. Depending on that team’s goal line D or lack thereof we will go 23 personnel or regular O. Can run almost anything. Fav play for me is Blast, send both fullbacks to open gap. #hogfbchat
If we got stopped in a goal line situation most of the time we were running 99. I always told my guys to have a 4th and 1 mindset. #PunchItIn#hogfbchat
A4: assuming that everyone does Oklahoma, we do a goal line period weekly for “Terrific Tuesday.” Great way to compete. 4 attempts to score, Loser has 20 up downs. Word to the wise, use a quick whistle. Losing your best offensive player on Tue of a game week is tough
#HogFBChat
A4- We try to hit at least 7 min a practice. Sometimes over/under depending on how the day is going. Our “Bengal” drill is best. Starting one on one lineman with LB and RB. Then adding more guys as the drill progresses, always having the whole program hyping it up!! #hogfbchat
A4: We practice Goaline period with a as needed time limit on Wednesdays. Go over about 4-6, rep, rep, rep. And usually have a 4 to score period built in practice if possible. #hogfbchat
A4) 10 min. Intro on Monday & 10 minute team period on Tuesday. Situational on Wednesday (how ever many times O gets there).
Lay the heaviest bags flat on the ground & have linemen get low enough to drive (using all 4s) the bags for 10yds. + normal #SKAQ#hogfbchat
A4: built in team for at least 6 plays a week, going to have a pass under pressure period, gotta have answers, try to put emphasis on putting defenders in the end zone so they have to tackle in the end zone, goal is for kids to have been in situation before game, #hogfbchat
A4) We focus more on getting the first down in short yardage situations by playing the chains. If you can get a first down on 3 and short, you should be able to get a touchdown on 3rd and short in the red zone. Develop go to plays for anywhere on the field #hogfbchat
A4: Goalline situations as competitions can be fun/energetic. O has to be successful certain number per attempt. Practice OT sessions. QB calls it. #hogfbchat
A4: Daily, built in to script. Once a week (Tuesdays-Full pads) we do a competition against the starting defense. The energy really gets cranked up for those sessions! #hogfbchat
A1 - 2 Back = Power. Gap double the TE and PST to BSLB. Kick out edge with FB or Sniffer Back and back block PSG & C. Pull BSG for PSLB. Hinge GET. #hogfbchat
A4: I like some of the ideas you guys are sharing on goal line situations, we could definitely be better. We hit it once on offensive period per practice. We will go with some 3 on 3 drills to work pad level and finishing runs. #hogfbchat
Short yardage and goal line periods are competition periods. 4 tries to get a first down or touchdown for the offense. 4 tries to force a turnover or stop for the defense. Losers have sprints, push ups, or up downs #hogfbchat
A4: might go to a heavier personnel package, but the concepts stay the same. Have to get reps against the funky stuff D Coordinators like to bring out.#hogfbchat
And just like that, the faster hour on @Twitter is over! Thank you all for participating tonight. Mondays aren't the same without you! #hogfbchat#AllGasNoBrakes#GoGo
We run G and Counter and my center makes a Dallas call. Everyone blocks down individually, like you would with a bear front. BS tackle cuts off the next DL passed the A gap blitzer. Most of the time with a cut block. #hogfbchat
Anybody got a great book they are fired up to read this offseason? I’ve read quite a few over the last few years but I’m always looking for great Leadership and Coaching books.
#hogfbchat
If anybody has any topics or questions that they would like discussed or covered in the #hogfbchat please do not hesitate to contact myself or @CoachDingus through Twitter or email. coachshiffman@gmail.com
A4: We do a fair amount of both 'Red Zone Rumble' and 3rd and short. (HC is also OC 😎😎 - which makes good for OL coach!) In this situation I like to let the big guys get some. i.e. BoB - run right at em. If not successful it sets up play action nicely. #hogfbchat
And do NOT forget about the second annual #Hogfbchat coaches clinic being held at @RhodesFootball on March 10th! You do not want to miss out on this lineup! Registration opens this week! Stay tuned!
Hope to see some of you guys this weekend in Dry Ridge, Kentucky for the first Southeast Football Coaches Clinic. Contact @JustinYClark or @slade248 to register, got over 60 booked guests last I checked. Gonna be a great time, myself and @CoachRmcD60 talking OL #hogfbchat
A4 - Goal line cuts. Saw some video on Mike Bloomgren and been doing it ever since. 4 pt stance and put ear hole on their facemask and roll through. #hogfbchat
Again, thank you all for participating tonight! I've been your co-host Tony Shiffman, signing off until next Monday at 8pm CST for your latest installment of the #hogfbchat
A3: give QB the option to throw an quick route to a slot receiver how replaced the blitzer. Simple no call RPO that can deter the defense from blitzing. 5 yd catch is not a bad 1st or 2nd down play #hogfbchat
We devote Wednesday to working 3rd downs and red zone/goalline prep. Biggest difference is that you might get submariners- have to have an answer. We will drill roothoging the submariner - digging out a defender with your shoulder and driving the defender backwards. #hogfbchat
A4 (PS): For DL, we work a GL Double Team split drill. Using 2 pop-ups pressed together, the DL must fire off low, flatback, eyes up, and crab through the two dummies, keeping their feet running the entire time. #hogfbchat
I have nightmares of that exact scenario having been gashed by it a couple time...I am not a fan of blitzing double A gaps vs any gap schemes,
Like BSOG and OT, you lose a scrap player and a lot of times the down blocking OL can get two for one. #HOGFBCHAT#DefensiveCoachCameo
A3 - Duo play. Gap doubles to the LBs basically power without a puller. TB reads the PSLB. If he fits inside bounce. Otherwise read it like power can cut out the back door as well. #hogfbchat
A3: We’re a heavy run team so we expect teams to blitz out of frustration, by nature we have blitz beaters built into our base runs. I’m still gonna Run my stuff and we work it every day from day 1. Power, Trey, Buck, Zone ✌️ #Hogfbchat
I'm still waffling b/t I don't really have the money nor time to fly out from west coast, and damn, it's the #hogfbchat conference. Really want to find a way.
A2) I’ve been in two different systems... 1st one made a base call which made the call man on man all pulls off
System I am in now is all about rules so nothing changes, but a smart strong center makes life much easier
Play call wise give me power all day!
#hogfbchat
A1) Gotta have answers and prepare for Bear in practice. Be able to make calls to change pullers, and have certain Bear killers you can lean on. Like 46 easy!! Right @da_alex72#hogfbchat
A3) Power and counter. A lot of zone guys say it’s easier to block zone to slants and blitz, but in my experience much easier to run gap scheme and you get bigger chunk plays from it! #hogfbchat
A4) We were a 10 personnel team, but every time we worked inside drill vs our defense, they would end up having 4 DL, 3 LB’s, and 2 Safeties 😳. So we got by with only 5-10 minutes of goal line drill in most cases. #hogfbchat#winthedrilldefense
A1) Interesting everybody going Power, but can't get dbl teams and have to block back with center against good 3 tech. I'm going speed option, midline, or throw the ball #hogfbchat
