A1 Some of the hardest data to collect. Relationships with students, families and co-workers. How flexible, adaptable and gritty they are. #PrinLeaderChat
A1: Most important data isn't a statistic. Can they effectively communicate with others and build relationships" Creating a positive culture is critical. Do they exhibit grit, determination and resilience? Are they adaptable, creative? #prinleaderchat
A1: Districts must create a principal profile & screen and assess against desired traits. Visioning, development of staff, use of data, & instructional leadership must be on the list.
Q1: What data is important for districts in determining potential principals?
#PrinLeaderChat
A1: How do you measure the “doers”? Those who go the extra mile, show up at student events, lead without a title? Those people are future principals. #PrinLeaderChat
A1: This is a hard one to answer...I would identify characteristics like building relationships, making connections, having a vision for 21st century learning, being student-centered, showing humanity, understanding the heart of the school's culture...#PrinLeaderChat
Agree. This is why it is important to keep a portfolio or examples of this type of work
Like parent letter and programs developed for families #prinleaderchat

Navigating difficult situations or conversations with colleagues. One doesn't have to excel to be a potentially great leader, but how one recovers and responds to difficult colleague situations is very telling. #PrinLeaderChat
A2 I think we need to be sure that experience also includes understanding and depth of knowledge. At times experience does not tell the story of potential. #PrinLeaderChat
I think they look for mostly passion, potential and drive. There has been an increased shortage of teachers and principals over the last two decades. #PrinLeaderChat
A2: Steady stream of research-based, relevant book studies & coaching, topped off w honest conversations about opps & challenges both to position generally & specific to school #prinleaderchat
Do you think this can at times lead to individuals who lack deeper understanding of instruction and learning? There is value in developing this as a classroom practitioner. #prinleaderchat
A2: Real experiences engaging with teachers, students, and parents. Involvement in research, development, implementation & monitoring initiatives. A meaningful internship experience. Short and long term planning. Dealing with day to day reality of the job. #PrinLeaderChat
Q3: As you reflect on your preparation to be an assistant principal or principal, what were the most important requirements of the program? #PrinLeaderChat
A3: The most valuable preparation I received were the two required principal internships for my master’s program, and the mentorship of my principal during my first year as an assistant principal. Coursework doesn’t prepare people for the work we do. #PrinLeaderChat
Q3: As you reflect on your preparation to be an assistant principal or principal, what were the most important requirements of the program? #PrinLeaderChat
A2: Opportunities to take on leadership roles and inclusion in those “in the moment” decision-making experiences that are impactful and offer opportunities to experience, participate, and reflect with a mentor. #PrinLeaderChat
A2: Greatest experience is "on the job training" followed by open conversations and feedback. Administrative book studies, mentoring programs and workshops would certainly be a benefit. #prinleaderchat
A3 the best experiences included the opportunities 2 work w/ an experienced mentor & willingly take on roles & responsibilities that welcomed me into the work in safe ways. When I talk w/ students about theses experiences I liken it 2 having training wheels. #Prinleaderchat
Q3: As you reflect on your preparation to be an assistant principal or principal, what were the most important requirements of the program? #PrinLeaderChat
A3: Of my prep program, the Educational Law course was most useful in practice. However, my work instructional coaching was instrumental to my growth into educational leadership. #prinleaderchat
Q4: What recommendations would you provide to university faculty in considering the value of a district-university partnership for principal preparation? #PrinLeaderChat
A3: I did an action research project on curriculum and instruction in the building. Helped me work closely with teachers, analyze data, formulate a vision and implement change. #prinleaderchat
A2: There should be opportunities to apply the knowledge gained in the program in areas of instruction, working with all stakeholders, coaching, etc. Applied knowledge is key. #PrinLeaderChat
A3: One of the elements of the PIL / NISL program that I use regularly was the piece about developing a mission and vision, and communicating that. Must begin with the vision in mind. #PrinLeaderChat
Q3: As you reflect on your preparation to be an assistant principal or principal, what were the most important requirements of the program? #PrinLeaderChat
Q3: As you reflect on your preparation to be an assistant principal or principal, what were the most important requirements of the program? #PrinLeaderChat
#PrinLeaderChat A2: Real-time experiences that challenge one's ability to think on his/her feet, delve deep into collaborative work and reflect on ways to add value.
A2: Among other things, principals must experince a quality (proven) mentors who is district-aligned in their own leadership, understands the many facets of the position, and has experience in the adaptive work to be an effective principal. @jowilson4139#Prinleaderchat
Do you think this can at times lead to individuals who lack deeper understanding of instruction and learning? There is value in developing this as a classroom practitioner. #prinleaderchat
A4: Keep it real. Focus on practical skills and experiences alongside the book work and theory. Leadership doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It happens minute to minute, day to day, weekly, monthly, yearly. Increase emphasis on how to lead. #PrinLeaderChat
Q4: What recommendations would you provide to university faculty in considering the value of a district-university partnership for principal preparation? #PrinLeaderChat
A4: School leaders need as much “on the job” experience as they can get. The more real, applicable, meaningful, and relevant the experience, the more valuable it is—same ideas we encourage for our students! #PrinLeaderChat
Q4: What recommendations would you provide to university faculty in considering the value of a district-university partnership for principal preparation? #PrinLeaderChat
School climate surveys, student feedback, EQ assessments. It is hard to collect and quantify. Sometimes is as simple as how they treat their pets. #PrinLeaderChat
A3: Principal success hinges on the following:
•Clear job definition
•High-quality training to meet expectations (reciprocal accountability)
•Proven quality screening & hiring preparation
•On-going performance assessment & support
#PrinLeaderChat@jowilson4139
Q3: As you reflect on your preparation to be an assistant principal or principal, what were the most important requirements of the program? #PrinLeaderChat
A4: Be selective in who is serving as a “mentor” principal. The internship is only as good as the mentor makes it. If they’re too busy or just don’t care, the intern won’t learn much. #PrinLeaderChat
Q4: What recommendations would you provide to university faculty in considering the value of a district-university partnership for principal preparation? #PrinLeaderChat
A3: I would say the internship experience and learning from current leaders. So many meaningful lessons learned that could not have come from just reading a text. I made so many mistakes however I grew through them! #PrinLeaderChat
#PrinLeaderChat A3: The hands-on internship was invaluable! The 3 mentors, courses led by experts action research projects and ongoing personal professional development made all the difference!
