A1: (Some of these are more YA than children's books) My youngest son liked Wonder, A Long Walk to Water, The Night Gardener, The Hill, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, and is currently reading Refugee. #bookcamppd

A1. I have been bookmarking these links just to share w/ all of you during this chat for months. :-) You may also want to bookmark? Young Author's Choice 2018 from @ILAhttps://t.co/M6wYiclC0r#BookCampPD
I loved getting to read his work aloud to my students in class when I taught elementary. When the BFG came out as a movie, I was shouting at the screen, "That's not how they talk!" #BookCampPD
Hi. He is now 12, in grade 7. Some were read to him, with him, or by him at his school. We all also have a few thousand books in our house, many of whom he has chosen, along with his big brother. #bookcamppd
#bookcampPD A1 Every summer I read all of the Rebecca Caudill nominees. It introduces new books and authors to me each year. It's always a good start and I enjoy sharing with kids in the fall.
A2: Dr. Seuss is a go-to book because of the rhyming, the nonsensical nature of the story and the pictures. The protagonist is often clear and there is often a crossing from the mundane world to a world where anything is possible. #bookcamppd
A1: I try bookmarking the "best of 2018" lists that I come across, but I know I miss a lot. Then I try to check out as many as possible! You might be able to see some of the lists here. https://t.co/I6NfJQHHRS#bookcamppd
A2: Coraline is a go-to because it has a great heroine, it is a darker take on Alice in Wonderland, it is a little scary, and it has a sense of humour. I also love his takes on various fairy tales such as The Sleeper and the Spindle. You never know what will happen. #bookcamppd
Each Kindness and Ordinary Mary's Extraordinary Deeds both revolve around the theme of kindness. They focus on the idea of how kindness create ripple effects. They help the reader to understand that your kind acts will eventually come back to you in some way. #BookcampPD
A2: I always liked Where the Wild Things Are (even the film and Dave Eggers’ book) because Max is not a perfect kid (is there such a thing?) and you don’t know what to expect from the monsters. #bookcamppd
One of my go to books is Out of My Mind by @sharonmdraper and Fish In a tree by @LynMullalyHunt I just love them both so much and are so good for kids to hear. #bookcamppd
#bookcampPD A2 Judy Blume. Hatchet series. My Side of the Mountain series. The characters and messages are timeless. Take me back to a simpler time. On Friday I read Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree in our schoolwide Morning Meeting. The kids were entranced!
A2. Barnes and Noble's list of 50 Classic Children's Books https://t.co/sWMrERdypg
Oh my ... I LOVED seeing so many of my favorites listed and those I read countless times to my children. #BookCampPD
My favorite in graphic below.
A2: An interesting narrator and/or main character is key. An unusual setting and a clear conflict also make stories appealing. I also like the element of fantasy in a children's story (or any work of fiction for that matter). #bookcamppd
A2: The classics evoke positive memories and remind us of our experiences in school. I recommend titles that I remember that were read to me as a student. Hearing stories were the highlight of my week. #BookCampPD
A2: #bookcampPD A few go to books for me are, Chrysanthemum by @KevinHenkes . A wonderful story about feeling proud of your name. A new book I just found this year is Alma and How She Got Her Name by @juanamartinez This is a sweet story about the family history of Alma's name.
A2 I found that the Littlest elf stole my heart last week when I read it to my students. Dr. Seuss and Bernstein bears are still really popular. The story lines are easy to follow. #bookcampPD
A3: I’ve been focused on middle school and high school books the last few years. There are many great choices offered by authors from a variety of cultures, which is ideal so that all our students can see themselves in the books being offered. #bookcamppd
A3: Crowdsourcing this to my kids now! The Other Side of the Island, Variant, Out of My Mind, Percy Jackson, Hunger Games, Maze Runner, The Shadow Children Series, The Selection Series, The Uglies Series, Starters, Enders. #BookCampPD
I wonder ... tomorrow, as you walk through the hallways, would you please count how many students have ..... oh dear, this won't work as they would probably be in their backpacks ... #BookCampPD
#bookcampPD A3 The characters have changed to reflect the kids that are now in my classroom- finally. So have the situations they are living through. My favorite of this quarter is The Benefit of Being an Octopus.
I think the book is actually key to this being successful. It would also be cool if students got to vote and choose the book after the teacher gave book talks on several options. My son loved A Long Walk to Water and The Night Gardener, but not Egghead. #bookcamppd
A3: There are a number of books where key characters have gender identities that are non-binary, gender fluid, etc. It is important that town/school libraries and classroom libraries represent all of our readers. #bookcamppd
I like how children’s books can transcend all age groups, cultures etc. They are also a nonthreatening vehicle for teaching complex concepts. #bookcamppd
A3: In general, I think books have become much more diverse. Also, many nonfiction picture books seem to have a lot of backmatter to make them informative as well as entertaining &he quality of illustrations has skyrocketed due to technology in creation printing. #BookCampPD
A3: Love in the Time of Global Warming, The Island of Excess Love, and They Both Die in the End have characters exploring their gender identities. These characters are also the protagonists in these tales. #bookcamppd
So many that it’s hard to narrow down, but I would say that all of @JasonReynolds83 books are a must have in your classroom. Also @JackieWoodson ‘s latest masterpieces. #bookcampPD
A3: #bookcampPD Oh my, so many new books. Ghost Boys, Ban This Book, Ghost, Amal Unbound, The Parker Inheritance,Invisible Emmie, Counting by 7's The Last Fifth Grade of Emerson Elementary, One Crazy Summer, A Boy Called BAT, Sunny Side Up, Wishtree, Harbor Me... #LoveLoveLove
A4. I wrote a blog post - "Reaching for a Gift Card This Holiday Season, Hold Your Horses" that you might want to read and get an idea. https://t.co/dDoNbbd25N#BookCampPD
We should try to give choice whenever possible. For too long I have worked in English departments where we did much/most/all of the choosing of books for kids. At the very least we need book clubs, but independent choices are better. Same applies for Xmas gifts. #bookcamppd
If you would like Santa to send you a sticker or magnet to, help promote #BookCampPD - please DM me and I will tweet one of the elves to mail it to you.
122 educators have voted for the professional learning books they would like to see as a focus during #BookCampPD Winter/Spring chats.
Have you voted yet? It takes about one minute and would be greatly appreciated. Your opinion/voice matters! https://t.co/XNJuz61UKJ
A4: I “heard” @CarolJago say on Twitter that the best book you can give is the book that that person wants to read. Start by asking the specific person what they like. #bookcamppd
A4: I attend as many book signings as I can. Especially #NerdcampMI and have authors autograph. That is the most special gift. My Ss also do it for me ❤️ #BookCampPD
A4: Give a mini-book talk (or 3 or 5) once you know the person’s interests and listen to which story the person gravitates to. Buy a gift card if you’re still unsure. #bookcamppd
So many return to chat after #BookCampPD chat & I am so thankful for your commitment to learning. I thought u might want to review the votes for our upcoming Winter/Spring focus bks. It changes quickly as one vote separates most of them on the list. Encourage others to also vote
Many thanks to all in the #BookCampPD#PLN for rockin' this evening's chat with your tremendous sharing! The @Wakelet of this chat will be one many educators will want to read. You will be tagged w/ link to the @Wakelet soon. Please know you're greatly appreciated!!
A4: Listen to the books the person has read and enjoyed in the past and see if you can find something similar. Ask who they have author allegiances to. #bookcamppd
Q1 Being an aussie here is a list of our top 50 children's authors - amazing array of modern Australian classics - just thought I broaden your horizons

#bookcampPD A4 When my nephew was born I bought Frog and Toad books and wrote to him about my love of those characters. Now that he is in his 20's it's special to look back and see. Hope someday he can share with his own niece/nephew/child.
